  • You've heard me talk about in the Cue It Up Podcast, and now here it is!
    !!! The Masse Shot !!!
    There are 3 components that make up a masse shot:
    1. Cue Elevation
    2. Side Spin Amount
    3. Power
    These three components all have individual effects on a masse shot. In this video, I break down those effects. Then I show you how to combine those components with an aiming system that dates back to the 1800s known as the Coriolis Effect, named after the French mathematician, mechanical engineer and scientist Gaspard-Gustave de Coriolis. When you combine the Coriolis Effect and the three components successfully, you'll have a pretty good idea of how the cue ball will curve around interfering balls.

    Chris, that was awesome. Pool isn't as much feel as so many think. You science it up, then break it down!
    And you always empathize the most important component IMO. Practice, practice, practice.
    Ive dabbled with the masse applying what i learned in the jump shot video. I jump/masse intentionally. It's getting me legal hits. And im tuning in to making the shots more and more.
    It's is much harder to defense me and my TAP Crew as we are all practicing what I've learned from your lessons!👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

    Well Chris I thoroughly enjoyed watching this video, I don't often attempt masse shots at all even in practice. Though after watching this video I find that the way you broke down the masse shot is a little of an easier concept for me to grasp and it will definitely appear in my practice sessions. Thank you again for producing such an amazing video.

    I think I watched this one time before but I do not remember so I will say you did a great job !
    There is one additional thing I do anytime I’m going to elevate my cue.
    I start with my tip on the tablecloth and adjust my grip to the follow-through position.
    This ensures two things.
    One is that I have enough room to follow through.
    And two I have a less chance of damaging the cloth.

    Great video Chris! I would also like to add to your tutorial... When visualizing the contact point on the table out from the center of the cueball contact point parallel to the intended path line of the shot, because of the fact that the masse will wear off just* before completing the turn, you should tilt your contact point on the table through the cue ball slightly inward from the initial assessment to compensate for this. This should improve the accuracy of the shot.

    There are 2 shots I really don't do unless absolutely necessary. Masse shots and jump shots. The reason is simple. I'm afraid of ripping up my felt so I don't practice them. I have no place other than my home where I can practice and the fear of putting a rip in my felt keeps me and everyone else from trying them on my table. Love hearing and watching how to do them, but the actual practice of them is nullified by fear. Maybe when my table needs new cloth, I may try some to get the feel for it, but until then, my game will have a large hole in it unless someone wants to let me possibly junk up their table. I have no faith that I can learn to do them proficiently without messing up some felt on someone's table. My cross to bear.

    • @danespen5772
      @danespen5772 Před 4 lety +2

      You can use a coaster like Chris showed. A piece of table cloth would work too.

    • @LilChrisPoolPlayer
      @LilChrisPoolPlayer  Před 4 lety +3

      If you were to try to practice jumps or masse, start at a pace where you're in complete control. You know you won't hit the felt. The cue ball probably won't jump or masse, but you'll be familiar with the movement.
      Even starting this slow, you can use a small cloth or like the table saver/break bad I used in this video (A link is in the description). It also provides a little protection to the felt.
      After you get familiar with the movement, hit a little hard and get comfortable with that. The cue ball will probably skip for a jump, and you'll see a small curve for the masse. Then just keep gradually building from there.
      Hope that helps!

      @@LilChrisPoolPlayer Thanks a lot Chris. I need all the help and advice I can get and you provide a ton of that which is greatly appreciated. I like the way you simplify and explain everything. It always brings it down to a level I can relate to. I'm going to throw my fears out the door and give it a try. If I end up needing new felt, I'll blame it on you...... Hope you know I'm just kidding. Whatever I do, I do and it's nobodys fault but my own.

    Another excellent video Chris. Haven't used the masse shot because like Efren i find my height (under 5'5") makes it very uncomfortable. However, I really appreciate the lesson and better understanding on how to apply. I'm a firm believer in the diamond system. Staying well. QA

    • @LilChrisPoolPlayer
      @LilChrisPoolPlayer  Před 4 lety +1

      I'm 5'5" and mainly perform curve shots (with an overhand grip), when needed. I think I've only done tight masse shots less than 5 times these past 4 years of playing.
      When I was younger I tried them all the time, just to look cool if I was successful. Now, it's very rare that I'll do a tight masse.

  • @russB0B
    @russB0B Před rokem +1

    So while curving, amount of side, dont think much about it, as a standard just set it about 1 and a half tip, but for elevation and power, elevation is either 45 or about 90, more elevation, lesser distance, bigger curve. And power, more power means itll take longer to come back or go farther into the curve and vice versa, so usually medium power is fine.

  • @rodrigodelgado9127
    @rodrigodelgado9127 Před 4 lety +2

    I also feel the size of your tip can affect the masse shot. I Can masses with both regular size tips and super skinny snooker type tips. But i prefer the smaller tip.

    I hope this isn't a stupid question, but wouldn't masse be easier with a non low deflection shaft?

    • @LilChrisPoolPlayer
      @LilChrisPoolPlayer  Před 4 lety

      A question is not stupid if your question is answered and you learn from it.
      If you look at a massé cue, generally massé cues are different than a standard playing cue in several ways…a massé cue is heavier, shorter, STIFFER and has a larger tip. Using a massé cue makes it easier to direct enough force to slide the ball and it allows enough spin on the ball for it to curve.
      Directing force into the cue ball is primary for a massé, so I would think yes a low deflection shaft would be better to perform a massé.

      @LilChrisPoolPlayer  Před 4 lety

      That's mentioned at the end of the video. According to research that I've done:
      Soft Tip:
      Pros - Grips the cue ball the best
      Cons - Easily mushrooms
      Hard Tip:
      Pro - Solid hit
      Cons - Requires tip to be "well chalked"
      Medium Tip:
      Best compromise between soft and hard pros/cons

  • @gunmenow
    @gunmenow Před 4 lety

    So when do you choose masse over jump shot? It seems masse is more compatible than jump shot, i.e. masse covers the use of jump not the other way around.

    • @LilChrisPoolPlayer
      @LilChrisPoolPlayer  Před 4 lety

      In some instances, the interfering ball could be to close for some players to jump over and there is also no path to kick the cue ball to the object ball. This would be when a masse is a viable option. A masse does not cover the use of a jump, because there's no way to draw the cue ball from a masse, whereas you can with a jump shot.
      Every technique has a purpose for which they serve best.

    • @gunmenow
      @gunmenow Před 4 lety

      Lil' Chris thanks for your reply. Can you please elaborate on the cases where masse cannot be used and only jump shot allowed?

    • @LilChrisPoolPlayer
      @LilChrisPoolPlayer  Před 4 lety

      I'm not understanding the dilemma of your question.
      If the path to the object is blocked and you're confident you can jump over the interfering ball(s), then jump over them. If not, and you're confident you can kick at the object ball, then kick at the object ball. If not, and you're confident you can masse over to the object ball, then masse to it.
      It all depends on what you're capable of doing.
