im on the subreddit almost everyday and it is a very common thing for people to be elitist in the comment sections. it is like no matter how much the moderators tell people to not be like this, there are ALWAYS people who still do it. this will give wizard101 a bad face for people who are just enjoying the game and might deter some who don't want to deal with such behavior within the community. i wish people could just take a moment to think that it is not all that serious before they comment.

As an old player from 2010, I’ve seen the culture shift DRASTICALLY. I can 100% say that elitists do exist and I used to be one. I was obsessed with the grind and used to laugh at crap stats while secretly hoping and praying I’d be able to get the next stats that were equal to or better than the next guy. As I grew up, so did my mentality. People back then were a lot kinder than people are now. Do I want the best gear, hell yea but I also understand that most people like me are all grown up now. We don’t have time time and probably don’t want to spend the money to get all that stuff since life is a thing. I think people just have to have a wake up call for them to realize that being mean on a game isn’t worth it. I find myself enjoying when someone asks for help, or had a question. That brings me more joy now than having the best gear to show off. I feel bad for the OP, and I agree that I am impressed that he beat the game with low stats. That’s WAY more impressive because I feel like I was getting my ass kicked with 63% at the time and 180 dmg. So if he got through it, i’m confident he’s a better player than most of us

@keplerbeer The whole point of a game is to have fun tho? Not everyone has the time to max out characters, if someone has crap stats, that doesn’t really give us reason to dump on someone. I think providing constructive criticism is the only way about it, Half the max gear are released are thru packs and require combinations from multiple end world dungeons/arcs/raids that aren’t really in databases unless you specifically google them. I didn’t know at ALL that the best decks in the game were from a pack until a small CZcamsr pointed them out.

My first wizard was a balance. I soloed the vast majority of the game with that wizard but let me tell you, it was a struggle. First of all, it was the wizard I learned the game on, so I started with a skewed idea of how spells worked because balance from the start is LEAGUES different from every other school in the game. To add to that, balance is one of the 3 hardest schools to solo, only really better than storm and fire because of their squishy nature. I remember I was stuck in Celestia for years because I had never properly learned how to put together a deck and really didn't know what gear I needed for what, so I was having problems just fighting regular mon fights in stormriven. I found another (originally nice wizard) who had a decent grasp on what they were doing, but the moment I expressed that I needed help, he called me a loser and, not just unfriendly me, but put me on his ignored list. That was my first real interaction with an "elitist" in the game, and it severely scared my concept of how teams worked in the game, so I spent about a year force training myself to the concept on how to lit together a deck, what spells are good for what, which stats you need for what roles, or what you should focus as a solo, and how to actually be good at the game. Since then I have had MANY people call me one of the best players they have seen, and some people have even told me I could easily speed run the game. I don't agree with that; that is to say, I believe that there are many people who are better than me and I probably couldn't speed run anything but wizard city, but I have found my interactions once I became a "top player" were suddenly on a surprise note that I wasn't toxic, as though everyone expected me to be akin to what I experienced before.
This is all to say, I know what a toxic player can be like from mild to major, and when someone sees you as good at the game, they come to expect you will fall on that spectrum somewhere, enough so that many don't want to ask for help anymore, but being in that "top group", anyone who could claim themselves at elitist are usually the first to offer help, and actually respect others, while those who actually claim themselves as the elites, seem to fall apart quickly when left on their own. The game is toxic, yes, but that was created because a small number was insecure that someone was better then them, so they started projecting themselves above everyone they felt was worse than them rather than being welcoming to their fellow players, and that select few influence many to despise anyone who cares in any way about their playstyle, creating the illusion that everyone at the top is part of some "elite group" that is just better than everyone else, but that just isn't true.
I know this was a long comment, but it felt necessary, because as was said in the video, people don't speak out enough to those who put "weak player" down, but those weakling players might eventually be your best players, so how can you claim to be better than them when they haven't even gotten a chance to try? That is how the game gained the "elitist" tag, and as long as the toxicity marinates, it will become more and more true. I honestly care about this game, but I keep seeing its community get ripped apart because "you are too weak," and "you can't put together a deck," all for what? What is achieved by it? It doesn't make you any better to put someone down, it just destroys the game. If someone doesn't know what they are doing and you do, teach them, or give then an opportunity to learn, don't leave them in the dark to fail and leave.

Elitism def exists however at least in my case when I give someone advice it’s not because I’m trying to be arrogant but instead I just hate teammates who make a run or fight longer simply because they didn’t bother to at least get decent bazaar gear or look up a major boss’s cheats. It’s gotten to the point that from now on when I quest I make 2 accounts at the same time and boost them together because I’m sick of getting bad teammates. Also I’ve given up on giving people advice in this game as lately they all just take it the wrong way and call me “toxic” even when I say something as simple as “lmk if you ever want to hatch w me” or “there’s better gear in the bazaar”, the toxicity honestly goes both ways.

Sadly, this is a thing that exists in any game, even single player games. Gamers are naturally competitive, and "big number good". Just look at games like WoW for an example. I don't think that behavior is inherently bad, but there's no reason anyone needs to bully over fictional numbers. I always love seeing new players achieving things and I like to encourage them to keep going and celebrate with them. I think the people who are toxic about it simply lack confidence anywhere else in their life. Perhaps that post got more attention than they believe it deserved, and so they took it into their own hands to try and take that away from them. That's just speculation of course, but people really need to relax a bit more.

All for different reasons some community driven some not but Im happy with that choice. To speak to the elitism its sad because to say there hasn't been a dramatic cultural shift towards elitism would be dishonest. Its truly sad because of how little I feel the casual community as a whole truly care about your wiz accomplishments knowing that time investment not skill is all that it takes to get them. Also to the point of there being guilt in both sides. The fact that the casual community points out time investment and lack of skill is a rebuttal to elitism. If elitism didn't exist there would be no reason to argue that point.

As a pve player I will say that elitism is seen a lot with the team ups and trying to find help for difficult things to solo or duo. If you do not have the best gear for that level and definitely if there is not a max wizard when you team up, it is a 50% chance maybe even higher that people will leave immediately. Not only this there has been a rise in players teaming up to just mess around with players so you'll be either one man short or even at that point going in 3 v 5. Hardcore grinders with new wizards do not want to do anything without a max wizard and now we have max/high level wizards joining in to just mess with people and I really feel that the report system is useless in wiz when it comes to team up. At the end of the day the person just wanting to mess around does not care and will afk in the boss and dungeon so when you leave you will have the penalty and not them and finding players of similar level think its a waste of time to play the game with wizards of their level. I am not sure what the right answer would be to help with this because at some point are the hardcore grinders wrong for wanting to speed quest no and there are still people who genuinely help but I personally have just seen a rise of more elitist people in team up to just mess with people and just basically degrade lower level wizards. Just wanted to bring this to light that pve also may need a look at when it comes to team up.

I'll probably type more than I need to but I have some opinions on this. Obviously elitism is a thing in any game, especially one designed like Wiz. I've been back for just over a month now and I actually have encountered someone, just one person, flame me for not having the best min/max gear. His argument, childish as it was, was that he had multiple maxes and I couldn't know how to play since my IGN wasn't consistent with my school (I have Ice in my name as a Storm because I made the account as an 11 year old and haven't forked over the crowns yet for a name change). So while elitism is obviously present in PvE (I personally can't weigh in on PvP), I'd say it's very rare and a small portion of the community. As you said, and I've experienced, most of the player-base has a large amount of patience, and are willing to help someone through giving advice or being the hitter in a boss fight for example.
At face value, the guy's happy post about hitting max was fine, but it's obvious that players that take the time to browse the Wiz subreddit probably play the game more than casuals, and in every batch, you're going to have a few bad apples (especially with the anonymity Reddit also provides). Constructive criticism is fine, especially first seeing his stats, it's human nature to want to help someone, but being condescending is where you split the helpers from the assholes. Where my issue with the poster was is that someone simply recommended buying Cabalist gear from the Bazaar, and the only thing he said is that he would consider it. This makes me question what his idea of fun gameplay in Wiz is. He has the gold, and unlike the elitists that use time and money, all he has to do is fork out that bit of gold to get incredibly better stats. Most people in Wiz that play PvE play to have the best stats. I'm not even saying min/max best stats like Raid robes, but most Prime wizard's want to get the endgame gear, it's practical. So him not wanting to increase his stats and getting upset at basically the entire subreddit for this advice seems weird, and I don't think it's wrong to point him out for that. Also, that screenshot you showed of him making fun of people for playing Wiz 24/7 (on a Wiz subreddit no less??😂) shows his nature and demeanor. At the end of the day the best way to get through the story as a solo wizard is through Team-Up. And reasonably, I think most Level 160 players, casual or not, would be a bit annoyed to keep getting someone with lazily poor stats so deep in the game. That's just my take though.

Wizard101 always has an elitism problem, no one is allowed to duel school at low level until max level, You are forced to farm Mount Olympus and Waterworks on all characters cause it's the meta and you don't get them, you get made fun of, people will bug you into stop leveling and farm those dungeons, or you get bullied off from grouping in dungeons cause you are not using meta deck and gear to be pro efficient to speed run the old content, it is stupid as freak, mate!

Genuinely cannot stand Wiz elitists. No, I don't care that if I hatched one more time I would get 2 more damage. No, I don't care that if I went through some of the most silly and long arsed battles in the game just to get MAYBE 3 extra damage. No, I don't care that YOU think I need to get this gear in this order especially when YOU are a minority and most people actually do not give a rass what gear they have on at any given moment.

    • @jayfeather464

Elitism is just a thing in gaming in general, but In mmorpgs it's a lot worse than in other types of games.
A lot of people play mmorppgs to show off and they spend way too much time playing this one game, and so thats where the elitism comes from. It's weird, it's annoying, but I've seen it in wizard101, and in other mmos too. World of warcraft is even worse when it comes to this.
Games like guild wars2 have less elitism because of the structure of their mmorpg, where they have horizontal progression, instead of the usual mmorpg gear treadmill, that wizard101 also has.

didn't you spend a TON of real life money for your gear? not starting anything but doesn't PVP people gamble on a LOT of gear for godly stats? i am no pvp but would you get those types of stats if you don't spend a ton of money on gear?
also i give props to this dude going through the entire game with those stats and brave enough to post it online. buuut considering his reaction, i think it was just someone that has the better gear and did random gear on him. i don't judge on people having low end gear on a high level wizard since i don't grind as much as a Ice wizard. if people don't like the grind, that is fine.

Lvl 30: Sky Iron Hasta at the very least.
    Lvl 60: WW/Zigzag/Winterusk crafted.
Lvl 90: Alpha Omega Ring and blade of the felled titan.
Lvl 100: some manner of Darkmoor/Exalted gear. Athames, rings, and amulet are optional.
Lvl 160: Well you either have Aeon or you're currently farming it.
The point is no one wants to see a max storm with 50% damage on a team.

Much worse are sexism and ageism. How often do I see disparaging remarks about "just a kid' or 'wiz mom' (never wiz dad though) or 'wiz babe'. So, the elitism is really just an extension of the overall toxicity. There's a reason, people are not in guilds, because raids are the epitome of elite culture. I do not want to deal with that.

Yeah, Sad that there are players like that. I was playing a couple nights ago and went to the team up kiosk on my max lvl Death character and teamed up with a low lvl Death player to do Nastrond. They hadn't yet learned Scarecrow but did have Scarecrow TCs. I could have just put on a blade or two and enchant Deer Knight or Ship of Fools with an Epic and one shot all the enemies leading up to the final two fights but instead I put on one blade, enchanted Wraith with Epic, and used my remaining blades to buff the person I was helping. I would use Wraith to defeat the boss and regain all my health and the person I was helping would use Scarecrow to defeat the minions and regain their health. After we got to the final battle the main boss is a Death schooled boss and has a -90% shield that keeps coming back every time he is hit until his other three brothers are defeated. I used Scarecrow or Lulu, don't remember which, to defeat the three brothers and my next turn I put a death prism on the Death boss and the person I was helping hit with a death wand hit. Now 9 times out of 10 another wizard would raise immortal Hell about that. He immediately replied "Oops. Sorry about that" and I replied "Don't worry about it. I have good pierce". During that battle I asked him if he needed the Trogg. He asked " What's that?" I told him it was one of Zeke's critters that you have to find to get training points and he understood. He asked me where it was at and I told him I would show it to him after the battle and after the battle I showed it to him and he said that he couldn't pick it up so I told him he had to talk to Zeke first to get the quest to be able to collect them. I sent him a friend request and he accepted. After the battle I went to Zeke and had him port to me. He got the quest to find the Troggs and I helped him redo the dungeon again just to get the Trogg. I also gave him advice suggesting that he use a wand from a different school other than death so that he could use it to hit enemies with shields on or if he had any weakness on him to get rid of them without using his blades, death traps, or prisms. He was very grateful for the help and the advice and I felt good about myself for helping this young wizard and even helped him out for about another hour or so on his main quest line.

  • @FrostDzNz
    @FrostDzNz Před 10 měsíci +1

Yes, there is elitism in this game, but there is also the opposite problem. If you have hours to waste grinding out the same repeated storyline world after world then you have time to farm gear, craft gear, or farm gold to buy bazaar gear. You're telling me someone will grind out AZTECA and KHRYSALIS but WON'T grind gear? Even worse, these people will join teamups and expect to be carried. So its fine for them not to want to waste their own time, but they can waste 3 other people's time for dungeon after dungeon, forcing others to carry an anchor or be punished for rightfully leaving someone who is practically throwing. Its not elitism to give entitled players a dose of reality.

Having good gear imo just makes the game faster and you feel like you're not wasting as much time. It's so easy to just not die with or without good gear stats as long as you play your cards right if that is your thing. However not knowing cheats is annoying, use your phone if you have one, it takes like 2 seconds to google, and you don't have to alt-tab. As long as you're having fun everything is alright.
