- Wizard101 is a magic based MMORPG Game with deck building turn based combat where you can customize your character, your spell deck and even your own house to play the game however you want. It released in 2008 so it's been out for a few years now and a question frequently asked about starting old online games like Wizard101 is: Is it too late to start Wizard101 in 2023?

its incredible how 15 years later this game has managed to keep a solid dedicated community. wiz is quite possible the biggest part of my childhood and its heartwarming to see it still going strong
It’s cool how some people have so many memories and others are discovering it for the first time
Best game ever made
the devs have also managed to keep the game paywalled and wallet draining the nostalgic players 👍
Remember the Selena Gomez event? That’s right around when I started playing.
@universal_wisdom3416 dang I was playing a little before that. Swear it takes me back. Lol thats funny as a kid i didn't realize the reference they were doing adding her and making her an event in the game
So I have been on and off of Wiz since my childhood but only recently decided to play due to the free first arc for a month. Absolutely worth checking out!
I played for an entire weekend and ended up getting halfway through crocktopia. I met 2 people while questing after booting up the game and we all ended up partying together and progressing throughout those few days. I 100% believe if Kings Isle made the first arc free permanently, the community would see an increase in player activity and it would overall benefit the game.
everyone would agree with you on that. also been playing on and off since i was like 5 years old, and the membership barrier has stopped me from playing so many times. it's just placed way too early in the game, no one gets an actual grasp of what the game is like without membership. i am glad they've been making the first arc free recently though. that has definitely shown a rise in player activity, and they've realized it.
crocktopia
Just to let you know, pets are quite possibly (outside of your standard gear ie. hats, boots, and robes) the most important aspect of a wizard’s load out in the game! If you train the pet and get the desired traits, your pet can give you crazy stat boosts and new spells which it can cast for you, for example some pets can give you new blade spells which will stack with your normal blade spells!
Training your pet is also the most aggravating, RNG, and soulless part of the game
@@zhroom8623 Yeah, but if you farm couch potatoes its not too bad
@@zhroom8623 start gardening
@@yerkocetz Even with hundreds of mega snacks from my 69-plot couch potato farm, it doesn't remedy all its problems. It isn't fun
@@zhroom8623 that Is true, for sure very time consuming and not enjoyable
honestly, even discarding the childhood nostalgia, it's just nice to play as a more casual gamer. and the story can go so hard in late game plot, i love it.
I'm pretty much the definition of a veteran Wizard101 player. I've played since 2009. Definitely grew up with the game. These days it's kind of lost on me, but then somehow every few months I always find my way back into it. It's just that charming of a game.
Same with me and RuneScape lol
Yeah, i love the crap out of this game. Minus a couple of edgy oddballs here and there, it has some of the sweetest, kindest people I've ever seen in a videogame. Love it so much.
Hey there, my name is Kyle! I'm the Community Manager for Wizard101!
Loved every second of this video! Thank you so much for covering it. I hope you enjoy and continue to enjoy the game! :D
Much appreciated Kyle :) Thank you
Are they ever considering making the first arc even just a few beginning worlds free permanently or is that outta the question?
ay man, give some of the arcs free please. i played this back when i was like 9 or 10, im 20 now and thinking of getting back to the game
@@Yahya-kc5vkyea.. the review wouldn’t have been so positive if the first arc wasn’t free for him
Something I seem to see from wizard is that a lot of the players I see on the game now tend to be (or at least appear to be) older folk, which leads me to believe the majority of the concurrent playerbase are returning players who grew up with the game with newer younger players sprinkled in
It’s true I’m 26 and I used to play this when I was a teen, this, poptropica, weeworld,RuneScape, club penguin , toontown , millsberry ect ect
1:30 Easy games tend to foster a friendlier environment, while harder games carry higher expectations and may lead to increased toxicity. I've met my fair share of toxicity in end-game areas where the stakes were higher.
This reasoning actually makes a lot of sense, thank you for sharing
@@JustSaySteven No problem! I think it's why I gravitate towards co-op games myself. I think it's how I cope with the desire for community or belonging. Each to their own though. People seek out what they lack in themselves typically.
Hmm
THIS MAN SAID WIZARD101 HAS A NICE AND WELCOMING COMMUNITY
I think it does! Sure, PvP is toxic and the commons is atrocious, but most people you meet through team up and just questing around are usually pretty nice.
Tbh it has a super positive community
Yeah no I’m a steady wiz head but I also play 2k and this community sooooooo much friendlier
@@gantster5896 I agree I joined 1 week ago for first time in years I’ve been told to fuck off twice but also had 2 new friends team up and help me beat high level bosses for gear
it does
maybe not pvp players tho
As someone who has played Wiz for several years, here's my take for anyone on the fence!
Give it a try! This community is one of the nicest and welcoming i've seen around nowadays! Of course there's always a few bad apples but those guys are mostly PVP players and usually don't bother anyone outside of the arena. PVP is completely optional so you don't even have to go near them if you'd prefer a peaceful experience.
About Crowns -
I wouldn't recommend buying anything with crowns until you get to the higher levels, as a lot of the gear that comes from packs is better suited to higher level players. You really don't even need to *buy* crowns until then, as theres options for things like mounts and houses that you can purchase with just gold, And as for the gear- crowns gear is definitely better than farmed/crafted/bought gear, the game is still very much playable without it. There's also the option of paying to permanently unlock zones/worlds for your account with crowns, which is a good option if you don't want to pay a monthly membership fee and would rather pay a larger amount one time.
While yes, you hit the "paywall" very early on in the game, There's a lot of content to explore beyond it if you're willing to pay the $9 a month (or purchase with crowns). As of now they've been adding at least one new world per year and plenty of events to keep you occupied in between.
All in all, I think it's worth giving it a chance. You might end up really enjoying it! :)
Nice to see new players still coming to the game, also once you get to know the game a bit better questing becomes allot quicker especially if you play with friends
I love how each spell card has an animation
5:09 , I bought the whole game with Crowns and it has saved so much money in the long run. I get bored easily and switch games often. I max one character and come back months-years later for my next one. Membership forces you to play the whole month just on Wizard or you are wasting money. Crowns makes me take my own time and slowly progress and come back whenever I want. On a super crowns sale where you get 25% off on crowns, buying 3X the most expensive 80,000 crown tier for around $300 will get you access to most of the game forever. Then if you spent $5, $10 over and over on membership forever. I haven't needed to spend money on Wizard since the $300ish I spent to buy the game, besides crowns for crown shop items XD but still that's besides the point. Membership for 1 Character Max/Speedrun/Focus all energy in Wizard/Member Benefits, Crowns for Zones - One time purchase, all 7 character max, play at own pace/slowly, bored/burnout...etc.
im almost at level 15 in a few days since downloading!!! ive been hooked since i first played it back in 2008.
I've been loving it so far as well!
Coming back to wiz now, being on and off for 13 years, and playing mostly fps for the past 3-4 years, Im glad im back the community is nice as hell, everyone is willing to help someone pretty much, i try to help people whenever i can, and give tips and such as we go
I've been playing this game on and off since I was a kid and it has been an absolute blessing seeing it evolve and playing all the new content
its so cool to see people still making videos about wizard101 cause ive been playing since it came out
Love to see the support for wizard101 I know it isn't everyone's cup of tea but when you really give it its time you can find an amazing experience and extremely in depth story with unique spells and combat
Great video! Very informative, I do play wiz and love it. I believe you have hit all the main pros of the game and appreciate your honesty. Thanks and hope to see you in the spiral 🌀
As long as you don’t play pvp. The community is chill when it comes to pve.
Fr wiz pvp community is arguably even worse than LoL
Lol I mainly remember playing this as a kid and everyone going around asking "You wanna have Hex?" due to the in game chat filter. Nice to know that it's grown from that.
I'm still playing Wizard101 to this day. I'm currently at Empyrea, and I'm still excited to see more of that world. I might be heading to Karamelle soon, which is... Going to be an interesting one. But best of luck in your endeavors!
Ty!
I hope this can bring over some new players
I absolutely loved this game as a kid, played it when I was 8 years old back in 2013, but I hit the paywall so soon and had to stop because my parents wouldn't pay for it (which is understandable and probably the same story for a lot of kids). I had no Idea they had a month where the entire first arc was free, really wish I had known because I would have loved to come back to the game and give it a try again. the biggest issue I faced was any time I would try to come back it was always just very empty and dead in the starting areas, and I cant imagine a new player sticking around for any of that, but watching your video it seems at least during the free month the game became really active again, wish I had found out sooner
500+ hours on steam started as a breath of nostalgia and after all this time I realize that there is so much more to the game than I was ever able to explore when I was a kid.
I completely agree that is one thing I like about wizard101 and pirate101, there are people that help each other with quests. I have been playing this game since high school and now almost done with the second act
As someone who heavily grew up on this game I can say it's pretty good. A few months ago I hopped online after a good several years and I wasn't a fan at all of the change of graphics, and ESPECIALLY the newer soundtrack (the OG ravenwood theme hits really different after this "modern" update). Anyways, if you're looking for a chill time with a decent story and a good amount of fun, I'd say it's still worth a go. Although, I don't think it will go back to being as it was in the golden ages when I was a little kid playing--
it's crazy to see how wiz is still alive it was a big part of my child hood growing up and it's shocking to see how the community and players are still playing
Just hit max level for the first time in my life today. Thanks for doing this old game justice!
I’m at 151 almost!
@@treyxxl4468 Nice. I'd be happy to add your true friend code if you want some help through Karamelle/Lemuria :)
Lvl 170 is just around the corner lol
Literally I used to play this 24/7 when I was growing up and pirate 101. It was truly my childhood and I think im gonna go back to it,
This was very entertaining to watch! I liked and subscribed.
I played Wizard101 a lot, and I can say the community is super nice and i love the style/jokiness of it, it doesn't take itself too seriously! Its actually really lighthearted, fun and exciting.
If you are afraid to give it a try , do try it when they have one of their open areas / free areas promotions! its really fun
I remember wanting to play this game almost 15 years ago and never got the chance remember being so hyped only 9 years old wanting to play this.. now I’m 22 and finally giving this a shot
Wiz101 will always be my favorite game, its so easy to talk with others etc. I played all other MMO's and they are great too but something about wiz is amazing
Hi i love wizard 101 i actually use crowns to buy the worls as i have played the game mire than once each time with a new school as the schools also have unique quests for your school too. Having a mount i super helpful as you travel faster. I highly reccommend the game. Fun and clean.
I play wiz actively and when you said this community is one of the friendliest, I was laughing so hard. This man is so positive love it.
dont play pvp if you want a wholesome community
as a wizard101 player for years that is about to go back to it again. it is hard to not make friends in it cause majority of players just always so friendly and outgoing so even if i try to to stick to myself i still always end up with a new group of friends XD almost impossible to not make friends on there
Whoa the nostalgia! I was in the life school but I remembered how cool mythos was
Man, I remember playing this game when I was like 9 or 10. Made like 3+ separate accounts due forgetting all my usernames and passwords. Guess need to make another one to relive the good old days
Heyy you were included on the official Wizard101 June Newsletter!!
That’s awesome!!
Seeing this brings back so many damn memories ☺️
I play on and off, my life wiz is lvl 40 and I buy zones as I go and it’s like 10-20$ a month for new zones and worlds depending on my progress.
I’m telling you they need to give the whole game and all the worlds for a set 60 and port over to consoles. The crown shop is all the extra money they need
Gonna be honest just buy the areas with crowns it cost more but never having to worry about leaving snd coming back and buying membership when u just permanently have the area
I play the game when it came out and since I didn't have money as a kid to pay the membership and I wasn't going to ask my parents nor did I want to use any of the money I saved for membership I played it as it is essentially enjoying a quarter of the game logging on on veterans Day to collect the memorial items and playing Halloween to keep grabbing as many items to sell so I can buy the death house. It took a while but I got it and all that resulted in me being level 27 in the starting world than when I got a new laptop recently I decided to download the game to play on and off like I used to which is only on Halloween then I saw it was free for the month and so I'm going through the entire game enjoying it and when I say to people that I'm playing it they're surprised and I said yeah it's fun when you can actually play the game so it would be nice if they made it actually free to play instead of giving you a demo in an MMO because of these small amount you have but there's at least other stuff within it now that makes that tolerable
When I entered Marleybone I knew I loved this game. You have to invest into the game to know if you’ll like it or not. I recommend playing through wizard city, and then buying a membership for a month, grinding through Krokotopia and into Marleybone. Then stop and think about if you really want to continue. I’m in Lemuria now and looking back, it’s really been an incredible journey.
Not coming back, but I do cherish the memories I had with it.
I have 7 max wizards (level 160) and I've bought zones. Yes it's expensive but if I ever NOT have a membership (like right now) I can still play all the zones. It helps when money is tight elswhere
biggest difference from WOW is the quests are all voice acted, so the characters in game say what their text box says, so much lore, plz no skip everything
I like unlocking places with crowns because I hop around beteeen games a lot and that way I can leave for as long as I want, come back whenever, and pick up right where I left off
Watching this video is giving me so much motivation to start playing again. I spent 6 months on and off playing the first arc and this video is bringing back those memories. Thank you! Also, if anyone wants to quest together, let me know, I am a level 58 life wiz with rebirth in Celestia
Been playing since 2008 and this game is a large part of my childhood. Currently I have a lvl 130 Balance wizard (when that was the cap) and that's the last time I played W101.
Good tip if you want to go more deeper into crown, I'd wait till your probably what....level 60+ maybe before you buy any packs. YT what pack works best for your wizard (whatever school he/she may be) and once you hit that level, buy a few packs. Reason why is because some of the gear you can just buy with gold as crafting items. Crafted items in the game are just as powerful if not more powerful than lower level gear you can get out of packs!
Also, if you get duplicates, SAVE THEM! Depending on what they are if their good enough, you can save them in your "shared chest" in your dorm or house and give them to your other wizards! I did that with my Myth wizard. Got on my 130, bought some packs, and now I got lvl 130 gear for when my myth hits that level!
I remember playing Wizard 101 a long time ago, it was pretty much my first MMO and I think that it definitely introduced me to the MMO genre in general and also my Wizard phase (I also loved the Harry Potter movies) so its nice to see that this game is still kicking and even introducing other people to the MMO genre which I have been playing and enjoying forever now and I love love that new people are getting into it.
wizard101 is so fun, i first made my account back in 09 but then I stopped playing until 2021 and I've had so much fun on it
Wholesome video ♥
Paying for individual zones may not be as valuable nowadays as it used to be, but it's worth mentioning that the game is nearly 15 years old now. I started playing around 2011 and started paying for zones around 2013, at first it was to keep my parents from threatening to take my memberships away, but with how active I've been over the decade I eventually got to the point that I was saving money for having just purchased zones as opposed to sticking to a membership. The game also has a few options to earn Crowns without spending money, so if you grind those out really hard you can potentially save more. I remember buying all of Empyrea Part 1 (3 zones IIRC adding to ~6k crowns) for free due to the free Crowns from watching ads. Unfortunately, that option has gone away with Flash, but they say that it's only temporary.
yeah i also buy areas too !! especially bc i usually am not dedicated enough to play throughout the month for the membership. I usually play maybe once a week and then i stop for a couple of them, and i also sometimes get very side tracked w personal projects on the game (like pet training or house decorating(stuff u dont need membership for usually)). So for me personally i like having access to areas all the time without paying the membership. Ive had year gaps in my gameplay but i always come back to accessible areas
I almost forgot about this game i used to spend hours exploring the world, i also remembered i quitted bc of the constant paywall but im glad its still alive today. the nostalgia is nostalgiaing 😋😋💖💖💖
This was my first game ever and I will always comeback to it
Love to see my childhood game is still up and going
Everybody always says to just buy the membership and forego the zones, but I bought the zones like 8 years ago and yes it costs more upfront, but now I am able to delete and redo the whole story without a membership. Don't get me wrong, this method isn't for everyone, but it's kinda crazy I never see anyone support buying the zones.
Quick warning on paying for zones and then getting a subscription:
I dunno if it was a glitch and I haven't played the game in years, but back in the day if you payed for the zones then got a sub, it would remove all of your payed zones when the sub ended. My sister lost everyting up through Celestia when she did it and KI did not issue a refund or reactivate those zones. Maybe things have changed (it has been over a decade at this point) just something to keep in mind when desciding to sub or buy.
Considering giving it a try
When I was little I couldn’t pay the paywall back then and and 8 years later I came back. It’s so good
I think a part of the reason the Wizard101 community is so welcoming is the fact you have to pay for worlds or subscribe to a membership. If it was a one-time payment like many other games, what's stopping them from buying it again after getting banned? It's quite literally a *commitment* you make to the game by subscribing and playing. One that you enjoy (assuming that's the reason you continue to pay for one) and inadvertently hope others experience as well without realizing it yourself
I would pick this game up again in a heartbeat... if I could play it on my phone, without needing steam.
Coming from someone who has played the game 10 years straight since beta back in 08 and off and on these past 5 years I can genuinely tell you it's worth the play and the community is perfectly balanced in terms of mean people and kind people it's a good great game makes me happy playing it
I played this game as an adult in my 20s and it was more fun than World of Warcraft. Oddly enough I played World of Warcraft and was heavily into pvp before they nerfed Paladin the first time. So I was SERIOUS about WoW. But yeah this game was pretty enjoyable. I wish I could have gotten into it more and stayed.
been playing since i was 13(22 now) game never fails to disappoint me
I played this game trough back in the day (till mali) , i dont think ill be comming back untill it goes FTP.
I picked life because I like the unicorn in general and the spell is awesome
I love this game have been a player since 2008, but I just can't support the monthly membership anymore knowing what games you can access entirely for free. If they changed thier system to either a one time buy in or just free to play in general but maybe you need to be a member for crafting or something dumb like that. Or even lower the dollar amount for memberships
game is just fun as hell , left & came back it’s still great to play at any level
i reeeally want to play this game again, but in Europe Wizard 101 is not available for Mac computers :(
My wife and I play the game together and we love it!
Dude, I have bought every location I have entered. The reason is obvious I don't ever have to worry about not having the cash for the membership. Also, I currently have 4 Wizards with intentions of having 1 from every school plus a wizard for every teir for acquiring such things as spellements
I remember playing Wizard101 back when the game just had the Malestaire story arc and SelenaGomez and one of the Jonas Brothers were featured in it. Now there’s new story arcs, new worlds, and the bosses got 10x harder thanks to cheating mechanics.
Wiz is super fun! i left for a good 3 years, came back and it was just as good, and with more content. i will say... if you want a good pet it will take a while.... or money xD
Wizard101 is just a surprisingly fun game to play. My favorite part is making optimal pets for my wizards though
Like 2-3 years ago me my grandma and brother were 130 or 120 max this game hella fun
I just subbed and liked are you going to do a wizard101 play thrugh?
Played since 2009 on and off. I wish wiz gave a permanent Mount for completing Wizard city. Instead of being forced to get crowns or membership to farm for gold mounts. The only way to get gold as a low lvl is by trading treasure cards..
Eh left once ranked pvp started dying around 100cap since everyone left causing no more 3v3 or 4v4 in lvl 50 or 100
you said you havent really gotten into pets, best advice i can really give without typing like a paragraph is when you look for a guide on it DO NOT use the bloodbat method, its outdated and you will end up hatching bloodbats significantly more than the type of pet you are trying to get
@@rocreations people make the base 4(20) pets with bodies that have high wow factor like beguiled gargoyle or a school hamster so that the body is less likely to be returned when hatching for other bodies. i would recommend Wenius' guide on pet copying. imo if you're just making one pet and not going for 100% perfection on it just use the one you got from the olde town quest as the base as it has a relatively high wow factor and has your school's giver talent in the pool.
dude I remember ads from this game when I was like 7 lmao.
The two main things I actively dislike
1, Meta, the game kinda implies you should dual class, but people found out the most optimal secondary classes, like every build should rely on you debuffing the enemy then buffing yourself to one shot things...that's boring. You should be slinging multiple different spells, not just the same things over n over.
2. This gripe i read about online, and I'm probably gonna get something wrong. The multiplayer aspect or rather, people's aversion to it, the game allows you to join any fight in progress. Some people build small decks so they can deal with the enemies, and if someone were to join it'd mess them up. Or someone could join at the wrong time, and get someone killed because a new enemy just joined. I like that they originally said "hey, help ppl if you see them fighting a duder" players complained about that. Instead of removing the message, they should have done something to prevent the first player from instantly dying, like maybe if i come in, and pull an extra, the those guys would be on me for a couple turns. They should encourage multiplayer instead of catering to the solo players.
if someone comes in, pulls in a duder, then they leave jsut to troll you, the remaining guy should disappear to "chase after them" (unless 2-3 turns have passed or something where the first player has stabilized
)
Omg literally my childhood game!!
Good on you for decorating your houses, I personally like to decorate with 200 evil magma peas or couch potatoes
1:58 hey that’s me saying “someone gift this man a mount”
I am now off to The Spiral! I just need to pay rent first, then around noon I will eat lunch.
youve never been in the commons at like 2-4 in the morning. sometimes it be weird af or it dead
Love this game since the day it dropped!
I still play it after all my kids finished high school, went to college and graduate college. Maybe, they will come back to play with me.. LoL !!
I spent way too much on this game lol. I have up to dragonspyre paid for with crowns and just wayyy too much into it lol.. 6 characters.. but i haven't been back in a long time.
I love playing this but the training from the start always gives me bugs! So, I stop playing.
just came back after 2 or 3 years and got addicted again lol
I will say, the community is very welcoming. I've been with the game for 12 years now and I think I can only count the amount of toxic people I've met on one hand which especially says something when I've met dozens per month on other games. It's been with my childhood for so long that I don't know what I'd be doing today if it weren't for that game.
A warning, though, is if you want to stay non-toxic, stay out of PvP. The meta has evolved so much that it would take months of learning to know even how to do it let alone getting to max level and grinding the best gear possible.
i used to play alot around 7 years ago, but now when i try to pay the membership it wont let me, ive tried paypal and everything and i def have enough money in the bank when i try, it just doesnt let me, i also tried around 1-2 years ago and it did the same thing. so i dont think i can play again altho i really want to
I've always loved this game, i got into it as a kid and I keep getting back into it lol but so much of the marketing is so dam deceptive. It constantly markets itself as free :/
But the community is amazing!
Heck yea my house made it in the video thanks so much cant wait to play again steven!!!! I had a blast. Im Blaze Ghostbringer.
Can't wait to get back in either :)
I’ve used crowns but I’ve also played for 10 years. I’ve I used membership that’s 800$ but since I used crowns it’s like 150$
Well it not as friendly the higher the level you get.
