Bringing a Vintage Fibes Snare Drum Back to Life

- Last year I traded 2 drum sets for an old chrome Fibes kit. As you all know, I've been converted into a fiberglass nerd... After showing that kit in a video a viewer reached out offering a matching snare, much like the one Buddy Rich used to use. Of course it wasn't in the best shape so I cleaned her up and installed an Indie throw off and butt plate to bring this vintage drum back to life. The bearing edges had some chips that needed repairing as well. After all, this Fibes snare turned out great and sounds great!

What are the sizes on the whole kit? It Would be cool if you did a video with that snare with lower tunings and or different dampening items. Gels, wallet, tape etc.
You can thin polyester resin with mek. Acetone in a pinch but mek works best up to 10%. 😀
I have a 30 inch vintage Ludwig kick drum for sale, its a perfect project drum! I’d love to see it make it onto one of your videos. Is it something you might be interested in?
Anybody else see the vox kit in back
Yup.
Was about to write about what looks like a telestar I saw in the back. Excited to hopefully hear about that from David soon!
had to tease you all a little 😉
rdavidr alright dave
rdavidr I have so many questions
I am the new owner and just wanted to say thanks for all tender lovin’ care you gave the drum!
Nice! Super cool to hear from you, usually a drum goes out the door and I have no idea who it goes to haha. I know youll put it to good use!
The drum lord has posted once again
Mmmm yas delicious
The CEO of drums must be like:
the fibes 5.5x14 fiberglass with chrome wrap was buddy rich favorite snare drum. he played one even if he was endorsing other drums. they are rare and very awesome snare drums.
Have you ever heard the Buddy Rich Fibes story? Bob Grauso had made himself a nice fiberglass snare drum in the early sixties and was friends with Buddy Rich. He proudly showed him that drum and let him play it. Buddy fell in love with it and had to have it and in his brash style had to have it NOW. But there was one problem. He was endorsing Rogers drums and couldn't really play anything else under his agreement. So Bob gave him the fiberglass shell and re-drilled it for Rogers hardware from one of Buddy's snares. He then wrapped it in chrome wrap (like yours) and Buddy happily played it. He liked that it had no dead spots. Plus it looked like a Rodgers so Buddy could secretly use it. After awhile the sales rep for Rodgers though found out, flipped out, and gave Buddy a very stern talking down to. So Buddy stopped using it and eventually gave it away with a kit he played with Tony Bennett. The drum was badged G&M for Bob and his partner. Bob Grauso and John Morena then started their own company, Fibes. They later sold it to Martin guitars although Bob still ran it under their ownership. So they had a drum that Buddy Rich was playing but nobody knew it was theirs! Once word got out they had a nice business.
Your playing has gotten a lot better!
One of the best snares I ever had the pleasure of playing was a Fibes 5.5x14 fiberglass. It was at a practice studio. Sounded so good with the oldest, most beat up coated Amb head this side of the Mississippi, I wanted to steal that drum. Good that I came to my senses and did not commit a crime that day.
Does my heart good to see that snare restored!Beautiful!
That snare sounds mean as hell. No wonder Buddy Rich used to use those things.
I loved the Fibes strainer of my 1970 clear fibes kit. Never had a problem.
Holy crap!
Dave has Evans heads on his kit for once!😱
He used Evans before.
@@joestarr05 true, but not very often lol
Love that snare sound. Like a popie snare.
Favorite part of all these videos is watching the progression of your playing at the end. 👍
Sprinkle baking soda into the wet super glue and it creates a super strong, sandable, almost plastic like substance. It's a trick as old as the hills, though I never knew about it until I saw someone do it on youtube. No joke, try it. I've rebuilt areas on projects where entire chunks of material were gone with this technique. The bearing edges on this drum would be perfect.
Impressive work. Very cool.Thank you.
So pleasing to watch, well done on bringing back this drum to life.
KILLER!!! amazing Drum Sound!!!
hey david! maybe you can do a whole video on rim straightening, would be cool and informative
he already done it :)

@@MhCamillo owh nice! Thanks👍🏻
That is one awesome sounding snare!
Great video brother. Seriously great. I restored what is now my pride and joy '65 Ludwig Model 400. The drum can do any tuning. It was covered in rust and pitting. And now it's great. My process was not nearly as thorough as you get. You get it all on video, edit it nicely, play beautifully, record and mix yourself professionally, and tell a good story. People have no idea how much work and skill goes into this. Thanks for doing it, man!
Thanks for posting again! I needed another drum video.
Your videos are something else, super well produced, insanely creative, you are the best!
Yess! These are the videos I’ve missed so much!
I really like the sound of those drums. Different than anything I have heard before. As always, a great video!
That kit sounds AMAZING
Nice Work Man!! I love this kind of videos!

That may just be may new favorite kit of yours
Love this drum set. Looks and sounds awesome.
That sounded great!
Your videos like this are super helpful thank you 😐
Great lesson in craftsmanship. ...like the jazz piano in the background.
Sounds great! I have a Fibes snare I bought in 1978. Absolutely love it!
That whole kit sounds phenomenal.
Man, i'm really liking the style of these videos.. It's been really cool seeing how much your channel has grown and how great the videos are becoming. Keep up the good work!
This video was so satisfying and relaxing at the same time.
Great job. Set sounds great

Sweet kit!
Beautiful job
You've outdone yourself with both the demo track and the restoration. Well done!
Nice job on the snare. The kit sounds great!
Those Inde throws/butt plates are showing up EVERYWHERE and I LOVE IT. That company is about to take off so hard if they haven't already
I really dig the song playalong with the demo! I'd love more of those in future videos.
Wow! You are "the guy" ! Great work and sound!
Amazing restoration and playing man!
Love the Fibes snare.
i love how the whole kit sounds, makes me really want a fiber glass kit
Dude I love the way it came out, and sounds! Super distinct and has tons of character
Sweet! I've always loved Fibe's Lugs. They are so stylist & beautiful. Also love the old Roger's Lugs as well.
Damn! That sounds great!!
Never disappointed and always impressed. 👏
I’ve always had a soft spot for fiberglass drums. The snares sound absolutely awesome.
damn, Dude. I had no idea you could ROCK. Great rebuild. Under earphpnes they sound near perfect.
These videos are always so entertaining
How are not at 1 million? I love these videos, and everyone in my high school drumline watches you. On the way to our marching competition last season, me and my section leader were watching your videos, all of them kept us entertained for the almost 4 hour bus ride we had!!! Thank you, and I entered the giveaway!!!!! Your drums sound so damn good man!!!!!!
I was needing some more attack on my bass drum and I remembered your "triggered kick trick". Game changer, thanks Dude!!
A LOT of clever use of tools here.
This is my favorite content you make!!!
The drum break was sick!!
Sounds good! 👍
Damn dude! Best sounding kit I've heard from you so far! Snare sounds great, but so does that kick and those beefy ass toms! Keep up the great work!
I just picked one of these up for 80 Canadian pesos, I'm glad to see you have a video on restoring one!
My first kit was a 1970s Fibes Crystalite with Ludwig mounting hardware & a Maxwin by Pearl snare ( which I still have & use). It consisted of a 12” X 8” rack Tom, a 14” X 14” floor Tom, & an 18” X 16” bass drum. The heads that made the toms sound best were Remo Clear Pinstripes on top & Clear Ambassadors on the bottom. The bass drum had an Evans EQ1 on the resonant side & a an Evans EMAD on the kick side. I ended up trading this drum kit for my 1980s Pearl Export , which I still have and use. Phibes kits sound great, and so does yours.
This is Gold!
Great sounding kit
That snare sounds amazing.
The Dr is in. I got a fever and the only prescrip is more cowbell!!! Kit sounds better than I expected for a fiberglass kit.
Thanks for the Sweetwater tip
I like the Drum set.Its beautyful.
Damn that sounds great!
Damn that snare sounds great!
The throw off looks killer on that drum.
Good stuff bro. Really good stuff. Thank you for your content.
That kit sounds nice!
Yesssss! The Rim Expander 8000's my good man!
No wonder it was Buddy Rich's favourite snaredrum for a long time...I really like the sound of the kick to...😎
Wasn't amazed until you put out the kit that looked really nice! Especially that dull shine tom 9:36. But then the sound of the snare 10:30 made everything just irrelevant. Fcking gorgeous! Wow!
Sounds great 👍
#1: That snare looks fantastic, and sounds great! #2: That drum set sounds waaaaaaaay better than I was expecting. Bro, seriously, those sound really good. #3) That was easily one of the tastiest track/drum solos you've posted. Niiiice, dude.
Keep it up!
Gosh this was amazing.
Ayye I see that vox bass drum in the back! Can't wait for that video 😄!
The solo in the middle was quite tasty!
Been there, done that. I was waiting a long time for one of the SFT strainers to come up for sale. I basically had the shell and the lugs. I had to find the strainer, butt plate and the original hoops. Got there in the end. After all that I decided to sell it. I wasn't crazy about the sound. It was too "snappy" or something. Good snare for a snare drumming, rudiment type stuff. Mine was the acrylic shell.
Nice job!!
Discovered your channel via Stephen Taylor's. This is the first video I've checked out and I love it. I'm not really good at fixing anything lol but I loved watching it come together! And you're drumming is outstanding!
Welcome aboard! haha
I like using two part epoxy for those type of repairs. Plenty of work time, easy to work with, and very durable when it sets up.
I have that snare and adore it.
It sounds greats! Its like that gross pang wood snares can get but like it all works together to sound great!
Fibes! one of the first kits I ever played.
Quite unusual to see you step a foot in rock !
This kit is great for that !
Biddy Rich used a Fines snare for quite a while. He loved it!!!
Back again man 👍👍🤟🤘
