Bringing a Vintage Fibes Snare Drum Back to Life

  • Last year I traded 2 drum sets for an old chrome Fibes kit. As you all know, I've been converted into a fiberglass nerd... After showing that kit in a video a viewer reached out offering a matching snare, much like the one Buddy Rich used to use. Of course it wasn't in the best shape so I cleaned her up and installed an Indie throw off and butt plate to bring this vintage drum back to life. The bearing edges had some chips that needed repairing as well. After all, this Fibes snare turned out great and sounds great!

      What are the sizes on the whole kit? It Would be cool if you did a video with that snare with lower tunings and or different dampening items. Gels, wallet, tape etc.

    the fibes 5.5x14 fiberglass with chrome wrap was buddy rich favorite snare drum. he played one even if he was endorsing other drums. they are rare and very awesome snare drums.

  • @drumsNstuff79
    @drumsNstuff79 Před 2 lety +2

    Have you ever heard the Buddy Rich Fibes story? Bob Grauso had made himself a nice fiberglass snare drum in the early sixties and was friends with Buddy Rich. He proudly showed him that drum and let him play it. Buddy fell in love with it and had to have it and in his brash style had to have it NOW. But there was one problem. He was endorsing Rogers drums and couldn't really play anything else under his agreement. So Bob gave him the fiberglass shell and re-drilled it for Rogers hardware from one of Buddy's snares. He then wrapped it in chrome wrap (like yours) and Buddy happily played it. He liked that it had no dead spots. Plus it looked like a Rodgers so Buddy could secretly use it. After awhile the sales rep for Rodgers though found out, flipped out, and gave Buddy a very stern talking down to. So Buddy stopped using it and eventually gave it away with a kit he played with Tony Bennett. The drum was badged G&M for Bob and his partner. Bob Grauso and John Morena then started their own company, Fibes. They later sold it to Martin guitars although Bob still ran it under their ownership. So they had a drum that Buddy Rich was playing but nobody knew it was theirs! Once word got out they had a nice business.

    One of the best snares I ever had the pleasure of playing was a Fibes 5.5x14 fiberglass. It was at a practice studio. Sounded so good with the oldest, most beat up coated Amb head this side of the Mississippi, I wanted to steal that drum. Good that I came to my senses and did not commit a crime that day.

    Sprinkle baking soda into the wet super glue and it creates a super strong, sandable, almost plastic like substance. It's a trick as old as the hills, though I never knew about it until I saw someone do it on youtube. No joke, try it. I've rebuilt areas on projects where entire chunks of material were gone with this technique. The bearing edges on this drum would be perfect.

    Great video brother. Seriously great. I restored what is now my pride and joy '65 Ludwig Model 400. The drum can do any tuning. It was covered in rust and pitting. And now it's great. My process was not nearly as thorough as you get. You get it all on video, edit it nicely, play beautifully, record and mix yourself professionally, and tell a good story. People have no idea how much work and skill goes into this. Thanks for doing it, man!

    My first kit was a 1970s Fibes Crystalite with Ludwig mounting hardware & a Maxwin by Pearl snare ( which I still have & use). It consisted of a 12” X 8” rack Tom, a 14” X 14” floor Tom, & an 18” X 16” bass drum. The heads that made the toms sound best were Remo Clear Pinstripes on top & Clear Ambassadors on the bottom. The bass drum had an Evans EQ1 on the resonant side & a an Evans EMAD on the kick side. I ended up trading this drum kit for my 1980s Pearl Export , which I still have and use. Phibes kits sound great, and so does yours.

I had to find the strainer, butt plate and the original hoops. Got there in the end. After all that I decided to sell it. I wasn't crazy about the sound. It was too "snappy" or something. Good snare for a snare drumming, rudiment type stuff. Mine was the acrylic shell.
