    Yet another very nice job, Mike. To me, that drum sounds very high pitched even at a lower tuning!

      Pulled this one back out a couple weeks ago again, and got it sitting in a nice medium tuning.

    Beautiful snare drum, I own a 62' Ludwig Supra, which I love.
    I'm a huge fan of Gretsch drums and the vintage drum's are just another level of craftsmanship and traditional drum making.
    I'm also a fan of Premier's drum's too, more towards the 90's and onward though, the Signia Maple and Marquis, along with the Series Maple drum's as well.
    What a great sounding snare drum you have cared for lovingly, I too love drumming and drums, the construction of shells, hardware et al, keep up the hard work on everything you're doing, from the UK. 👍💙

      The premier fandom makes sense knowing you're from the UK! Thanks for the kind words.

    That Great Gretsch Sound! Thanks for sharing. Love the cracking sound that is so unique to metal shell snares. I have a used steel snare on my Gretsch Catalina Club.

    The summer after I graduated from college, my high school band director gave me a vintage Ludwig kit that the middle school was getting rid of.
    Don't worry, when I was still in school I wrote a letter to Ludwig and asked them to send a new one....somehow it actually worked.

    Sounds awesome Mike. That high tuning "ping" is something special you only get with chrome or aluminum shells.

    • @malonedrum
      @malonedrum  Před rokem +1

      Agreed. I think it's particularly special on these ultra thin aluminum shells.

    i've revamped so many snares it's ridiculous. and every time i think i want to record the process, i never do..lol. Good job as usual Mike.

      It sure slows down the process to try and film it.

    Nice snare...regarding Gretsch sets I encourage you to buy Gretsch Catalina Jazz limited edition set 18,12,14" (Blue, Red or Yellow Satin Flame)...they have a great tone and gorgeous look...I had five of them😁

      I have a great catalina kit, but the wild stain flame finishes are not really my cup of tea. They are cool though. Great throwback feel.

    Great sound in all tunings. To me, the mid tuning almost had a Chad Smith sound. I’m actually about to change heads on my first snare. Mid 2010s Mapex hammered steel. I’m a total newbie, but can tell the heads have been swapped at least a couple of times. Would you recommend the white lithium grease in my situation?
    The reverb ad said it had an Evans G1 on top and Evans 300 snare side in the ad. When I received it, it had an HD dry on top you could see wire marks on, and an Evans Reso 7 on bottom, typically a Tom reso. So I definitely think some experimenting has been afoot.

      @malonedrum  Před rokem +1

      That's a cool comparison, and I can totally hear that with the Chad Smith reference.
      I'm not sure you need the grease, but it couldn't hurt on a used drum at your first time changing heads. Just not something I'd do very often, but maybe on new-to-me used drum.

    Hi Mike
    I have a broken Ludwig Super sensitive snare drum that i want to transform it to a much simpler Supraphonic. Have you done any video like it? Thank you.

    • @malonedrum
      @malonedrum  Před rokem +1

      No, it I did a similar job to a Rogers Dynasonic, and it was extremely simple. You might need a different throw or butt plate, but I’m sure there’s a drum forum with an article about somebody who’s done it

    Keep the Gretsch and sell the Slingy

    • @malonedrum
      @malonedrum  Před rokem +1

      The likely outcome, but since I’m not into either for that much money at the moment, I haven’t really pushed to sell any yet.

  • @jarrep05

    it doesn't have bearing edges?? Usa custom? wtf?

    • @malonedrum
      @malonedrum  Před rokem

      It’d from the 70s, they made drums differently back then. The shell is so thin, I can flex it just by adding a little pressure. There’s a slight edge, but because the shell isn’t thick the head contact is already very slight, so they don’t have to use as traditional of a bearing edge I believe. Sounds amazing.
