- In this video, we make an evaporator from a 55 gallon drum so we can boil down our maple sap from our tapped trees. The evaporator uses a camp stove conversion kit and stainless steel steam trays. We illustrate step by step instructions on how it is built.

I like the comment on the B&D drill. My grandpa gave me one like that for christmas once but it had a keyless chuck. That was my first power tool. I was probably 10. It doesnt get used much since my cordless tools took over but it sure brings back memories.

Troy, I am left handed, so the answer is yes. Interesting project. Thanks for sharing. I believe your plan is great. You can put part of the plate that you cut out between the pans so that the heat does not escape. God bless America.
Cool. I've never seen this done before.
With my setup, the front pan got a tad bit less heat then the back pan, so I use the rear for the boil and add to the front. Plus it was easier for me to add new to the front. I just use a soup ladle to scoop sap from the front to the back.

Have you ever tried cutting sheet metal with a nibbler? I found it very effective and mostly pretty tidy, apart from the out-bites - which I pick up with a little magnet.

If you bend those flaps up your pans will sit over more of the fire and the flaps will protect the side of your pans from cold air. Just a suggestion from a former Vermonter.

25:11 your pans seem to tilt in towards each other in the middle? Also, I would have left a strip of steel in between the pans to hold in more heat. I’ll be building a pair of these this fall 🤞🏼
Does the stove maintain heat with those big pans in place ? Seems like it would lose a lot of heat around the pan edges
I’m left handed and I believe it should be a recognized disability worthy of parking in handicap spots. Everything is designed for right handed people from chainsaws to scissors and even some buildings with door handles and light switches located for right handers
I made one of these. It's a struggle to get it hot enough and keep it there. It does work, but it's slow going.
Would it be better to use a large square tray to cover the top? That way no air gaps
a blower(old hair dryer) might help with making more heat
Would it have been better to put the nuts on the outside in case you ever need to replace a part? It seems like nuts inside would burn and get all ashed to the bolts making removal or adjustment impossible. I do not know, I've only seen these type of stoves, never had one... could be reasons pro/con either way.
Nice set up, hope it works the way it's schemed to.
The only issue is that the metal is cast with recesses around each bolt hole to accommodate the pan head bolts. Turning them the other way would be a bit of an issue.
Well that makes sense then. I would guess recessed bolt holes dictates which side the nuts go. lol
Watched today's test boil, and it seemed to go okay... The price of the camp stove vs gallons of syrup will go down year by year... 30 years from now when your sons are boiling down sap with their own teens the stove will be well paid for. :D
What was that on the lower roadway that came up out of the gully at about 1:16 in the vid? I thought your dog was black so the color made me look twice.
Ha! I didn't notice that at first. That is Gizmo. One of the cats we have on the homestead. He likes to hunt in the tall grass on the edge of the driveway.
