Welcome to Artbound's new music series Hear and Now, where we explore songs with a sense of place. The idea is simple: put Southern California musicians in the locations that inspired a song, and document a performance of the song in that place.
Six songs. Five locations. One day. For this installment of Hear and Now, we commissioned DJ Cut Chemist to make a mix for our city; a collection of songs that represented a few of the many neighborhoods in Los Angeles. Then during one crazy day, we drove across town, setting up guerrilla performances in each of these locations.

For those of you tired of hearing that DJs aren't musicians should use CC as an example of how wrong those people really are.
Not only is he live mixing but all the Delays that are in time with the music are all manual scratch and fader techniques to simulate delay. Scratching is also a form of sound creation much like the strumming of a guitar or the pressing of keys on a piano in which he clearly demonstrates over and over in this video. And just because DJs use the music of others to create these sounds does not mean they are any less creative or skilled. People have been playing other peoples music for generations before DJs even existed yet they were no less musicians than a DJ. Music is about creativity not how skilled you are at what instrument. The only thing that matters in music is the end result not how you get there.
For real. People don't realize a lot of music of the past is folk music and folk music is basically everyone playing each others songs. The beauty comes from not only the community nature of it all but also seeing the style of individuals shine because you have heard other versions of the song. You can hear the differences in creative styles in an interesting way.
👊
How dare you play Greensleeves on a guitar rather than this ancient dulcimer!
How awesome would it be just to be walking by and there he is playing this?!
I would travel .
Unbelievably good, the last scene where he used that one few second long sound and used the pitch control to play it like an instrument in tune with the music was incredible, such a delicate touch!
The Dj's, DJ
The Chemist's skills, ability, talent & creativity are unparalleled!
Just brilliant. California Soul NEVER gets old and fits into the beat perfectly.

Sellasie!
Im in da metro.
But, it has been changed the clubbbb.
Amazing as always, I assume the last track was inspired by Kid Koala's Moonriver piece?
Oh yeah I totally got that vibe too, I wonder if there are more artists that play like those two.
I'm on a rampage right now - I'd love to know more of them.
Redyz Search for DJ Shadow + Cut Chemist, you'll find a lot of mixes these guys did together... like Brainfreeze or Product Placement. Amazing, you'll love it :)
Thanks Michal, you know I got all 3 on DVD! You forgot "The Hard Sell"...Shadow is one of my all time favourites for sure.
Michal Habala I apparently never saw that message but yes, thanks for the recommendation - that's what I ended up doing! I also recommend 'Cut chemist's - the police part 1 & 2' Which are unrelated but pretty great nonetheless!
try DJ/Rupture's "Minesweeper's Suite Mix" or even the latest DJ Shadow's Boiler Room :)
Ole, olE y oLE!!!
HUGE crates. Chemist has huge crates and an ear for everything FUNky. One of my favorites. He will surprise you how deep his break knowledge is. Ask Biz Markie. Case in point 1:30

definitely an ode to his Somewhere Over The Rainbow routine
6:30 Aker Bilk?
this is a lost art form. now the computer syncs the beat, and rarely does anyone scratch. it's just bringing muting and unmuting loops with effects, no real-time manipulation.
anyone from skate 2 back in the day?
eh??
i taught cut chemist how to scratch
Was watchn till i saw the laptop then naa NO
dude f*ckin' chill, he's on the beach. can't get sand in the crates. he's still scratching a digital file manually like no other can. go back to listening to your Spotify
