Passing Prop 22 will increase the cost of using a ride share app for everyone. Uber/Lyft are not going to redistribute company profit to drivers to pay for overtime, sick leave, insurance, etc... it's going to be added to your bill as another line item. We just saw this play out with the $20 minimum for fast food workers -- the added cost is being passed on to the consumer in the form of higher menu prices, shrinkflation, and less services. It is not coming out of corporate profits. This bill also shares the same ethical question: should the lowest paying jobs in the economy provide a sufficient living wage for a family (with dependents) to cover the high cost of living in California?

I’ve done gig work off & on for years. Every app pays well when they first started, before Prop 22, but continue to decrease base pay every year. I do alright with Prop 22 in place. My concern is that if it’s struck down, the base pay will continue to shrink without the hourly minimum safety net, which will kill all app work as viable income.

It’s really simple what they consider an independent contractor has nothing to do with money. What there’re considering independent contractor is that you could log on and log off. That’s it that’s only independence you have is to accept a ride or don’t accept a ride. You realize it independent contractor should be able to set his own rate. When gas prices go up, you should be able to set your own rate to compensate for the fuel being more expensive when I started gas was at three dollars a gallon. A gallon of gasoline is closer to five dollars. And you have not been able to change your rate to compensate for those two dollars. Not not to mention insurance cost maintenance costs. The cost of food. All across-the-board everything has gone up. Except of the independent contractor working for Uber and Lyft. We have not been able to raise our rates due to inflation. We’re making less now than we did in 2015. And we have no say.

I arrived in LA in 79’ and I visited a bar on pico just west of the 405. I forget its name but remember the drink I had was called a Blue Hawaiian. I was enthralled with tiki bars and the feeling they had. Being a die hard Gillian’s Island fan I had to visit Skippers Lobster Barrel on LaCieniga. We were lucky enough to be there when Allan Hale was there and he graciously stopped at our table to wish us well. Thanks for the blast from the past!
