    Very interesting video! Some parts in the video show very good infrastructure, some other parts look confusing and could be improved. The new red asphalt is definitely great. But as soon as you enter the downtown area, it's not easy to see where the bike lanes are. Are people biking on pedestrian paths?

      I agree that the shared paths in the centre are confusing. But that is where you are expected to cycle. The signs even show that. Shared walking and cycling. You do see that the pedestrians are used to it. They will step out of the way.

      it really feels like "cycling on the sidewalk", however with more width than for example typical in Bavaria and I don't really see any infrastructure dedicated to cyclists within the city center. Even the traffic lights have no bike symbols. This feels a bit disappointing compared to the huge bike paths in the rural parts.

      @@kailahmann1823 I think that the city center is not the first priority when it comes to improving the bike paths here in Oulu. As a pedestrian and a cyclist I kind of agree with that because I think that it's more important to take care of the commuting routes first. The wider and well maintained bike paths get me from home to city center (5 km) in 15 minutes. It doesn't make much of a difference to me if I have to slow down a little right in the center because the busiest area is less than 1km². Most of the time you can choose a less busy route if you're just passing through.
      I would appreciate if there was a straight and easier route for passing the center from North side to South side (from Tuira to Limingantulli) without using the sidewalks but that's a bit of a tricky spot because of the sea and the market square. They are working on the network pretty fast so I would think that they have some kind of a plan for that part too for the future.

      Although I’m not a fan of it, it’s quite common here. As a pedestrian and runner, I find cyclists are regularly using the ‘easy route’ rather than the designated footpath with little regard for pedestrians. The upside is that because you need to fit a snow plough on them in wintertime they’re generally wider than footpaths in other European countries.

      @@kailahmann1823 Everything in Finland is rural. There aren't any cities in Finland, really.

    I think the mixed use pedestrian/cycle paths seem to work well. I'm not sure at what time you taped this, though, so if there's any quick rush hour route through it, I'd day it should be updated.

    Safety seems decent, though there could be more visual cues to reduce risk of misunderstanding between commuters.

      Those electric scooters have a certain area where you are allowed to drive and i think that's the border where that area ends. I also live quite close to the border and there are always shitton of those scooters laying around right on it

    Didn't see much cargo bicycles!? Do they not have or use them much like in the Netherlands?

      Afaik everywhere outside the Netherlands cargo bikes are nearly non existant. I have never seen one RL except a few times in a 100K+ city.

      Oulu is very suburban. Nowhere near comparable to any Dutch city. Oulu, Amsterdam, and Helsinki are all comparable in terms of physical footprint and distances between places, but Oulu has only a fraction of the population of the other two. In other words, lots of people drive.

    • @steemlenn8797
      @steemlenn8797 Před 8 měsíci +2

      @@weetikissa Yes, there is a lot of car infrastructure. But if you don't want to drive, you can do it. Easily. That is the difference, and as you see, it works for relativly rural places, so there is no reason why the US cannot do it.

      Cargobikes are still quite a new concept to Finnish people but becoming more common year by year! We've only got very few dealers aswell.
      In Turku where I live I can't go cycling without seeing at the very least one cargobike in traffic. Although Turku being a car centric city with quite a bad cycling networks it's still getting a lot more common to see them being used.
