I'm reading your book (almost finished it and started 3 days ago) and I've seen almost all of your videos. I'm sure you know this, but you are literally saving hundreds of junior or aspiring junior UXers from the confusion that exists in this field... In my case, the dunning kruger effect was REAL. Now I know that I don't know nothing. And I'm doing my first serious project where I plan to practice UXR, UX Design and UI. Thank you. You and Aona's channel. You have "saved" me, honestly. Gracias.

This is some great advice! It’s a relief to see that there are design leads that think this way, as nowadays (and for several years) mobile apps and other digital services are touted as the panacea of every problem.

This was sooo good. I def have started a little too solution focused at times. I love how you started w, "you can get hired but here's how to get to the next level." I wish I watched this before assembling my first case studies.
Not sure if you will see this, but this video really helped out when I am rethinking my case studies, staying away from just jumping to UI Designs but showing the actual process I had researching user needs and their experience "before, during, and after." I wrote a full page of notes just using this video alone, will be checking out your other videos! Thanks!
It's a vey good observation relative to what UX designers actually do! I'm in a bootcamp now. I suppose if Cindy did this for a class (UX Bootcamp), the issue actually jumps over the problem, as the assignment would have started like this: In this unit, we are going to DESIGN AN APP that focuses on user experience. Because from a community organizer experience point of view, technology is RARELY the solution.
I enjoyed your review of this portfolio. You pointed out some stuff that'd been missed out which will definitely improve the quality of storytelling while presenting the case study and fill in as a missing link. That said, I also felt that some of stuff you mention, particularly towards the latter quarter of the video, were more services design oriented and might be slightly beyond the level of someone that is early in their careers. Could be a potential minefield to navigate in an interview!
this is great advice -- I gotta say it's sometimes confusing to hear how in depth you take your reviews in regards to true experience design as opposed to product design -- or at least in my opinion. It seems that in scandanavian countries, design is looked at more holistically and thru the lens of service design where architecture and furniture design are just as much about UX as making apps, software and websites. I find that hiring managers in America tend to focus more on technical aspects of production over UX thinking... do you find that to be true as well? I just hear a lot of product designers talking more eagerly and critically about the form moreso than the function, especially for junior roles -- maybe because that's how they get to contribute sooner into their jobs if they are indeed hired. Curious to hear your thoughts, cheers
I am so happy that I found his channel. There are precious few designers on CZcams that focus on the real hardcore UX work. Vy's advice here is information that a junior almost NEVER hears from anyone but that no doubt is discussed in many hiring team meetings. This was spot on for me, and I am certain that it will resonate with many other aspiring product designers.

I have a question - as an aspiring UX designer about to finish University, I am looking to specialise my UX design towards a specific sector, possibly fintech - could you recommend a good sector to specialise in regards to demand etc? I'm also finishing uni like you. Why would you want to specialize?? I ould advise you to forget about specializing. I know that everyone says you should specialize but think about it. In your first years is much better to do different things. Both in terms of the UX process (you have to be at least familiar with all phases of UX to be a complete pro) and in terms of sectors.
@@MrZxcvbnm22 With the wealth of problems in the world to fix, I spent the first 4 months post-graduation applying to any and all sectors. When I came up for air (still jobless) I realized that most of the jobs I had applied for wouldn't have excited me in a way that would make my creative flag fly. Look to your personal goals, values, and passions and let them lead the way. Look for opportunities to do work that you really care about and it will show to hiring managers. Focus your energies on a career you will love!
@@cindyluvbug Well, I already decided that I want to be a UX/Ui designer even though I'm a multipotentialite and I have experience in programming, motion graphics, photography, retouching, 3D graphics... UX design is what I want to do next and, honestly, I can't be picky about what sector or industry I'll get. In fact, I'm so curioious that I would want to work an an agency where I could see many different kinds of sectors. Then, once I've seen world I might choose something more specific, a more specific thing... But Iknow myself, I'm not wired to speciaize in JUST ONE thing. And yeah, I know you can't master too many different things. But I have only this life... I will not waste it doing only one thing. And I know that majority of people are okay with that.

Everyone keeps telling to choose a field and align your career according to it but it is really hard to do especially as a beginner as i have varied interests and like you said want to see how various sectors operate. Hi Vy Im wondering if i can ask another question to you here... how do we approach a conceptual UX case study if a product is already there to solve a user need? I have ideas wanting to use GPS technology who is a stakeholder I am collaborating with to solve users needs and show them what other sectors this stakeholder could target. GPS to track sports performance, GPS to find lost run away toddlers, and GPS to track and pinpoint bird species are available in the market.. so how can we create a product if its already. been available? Should the approach instead be to look at what is currently in the market and see what we can do to improve the experience for GPS?
Don't jump into solutionising too quickly. Use those hunches as a hypotheses BUT do enough quant research to find out if there's merit to dive into those spaces, then research the qual and user pain points to see where is the most value added - these type of efforts need a discovery before they can become a ux project. if you want to see if existing product lacks something to redefine it then start with its users - feedback, issues raised, what are they talking about etc.
Hey vy, not sure why but the only time I get recommended your videos are when I see these premier things. It's kind of annoying because it means I can't watch until it premiers in a few days, at which point I forget about it and it doesn't show up in my feed. Would much prefer for your vids just to be released when they're ready to watch, just my 2c
Hey - this is the reason why I premiere them. CZcams algorithm doesn't really favour my content otherwise. And I was to stop premieres you might not see any of it at all. The best you can do is 'set reminder' and enable bell notifications for the channel - you will get notified once anything goes live.

Point of view is not any of the issues. The improvement areas is applying appropriate UX research and not converging too soon to create a solution

Not sure what this refers to. Axure? You used a symbol or number somewhere that isn't appropriate to generate prototype. Check all text labels etc.
I have one question. Is experience mapping part of the discovery or definition phase?? Or depends on the type of Map used?
As-is - discovery/research, to-be - definition/ideation etc.
