Since I got Disney+, I have revisted many older episodes. Your post is 100% on the money. I am thinking about going back and watching it from the beginning.
30 years ago, in 1994, when this episode came out, we had stories like this coming out of the White House, and the "tabloidization of the media" was already a depressing trend.
Sexual harrasment does actually occur you know... In homer's case, he was wrongly accused. This bears absolutely no relation to any sexual harrasment accusations in real life that I'm aware of. Are you insinuating that Trump or Weinstein are innocent? If so you are delusional. The 'prediction' you claim makes no sense whatsoever.
Mr Gecko 1) I’m not assuming that either of these men are innocent. 2) Your assumption that I’m delusional is misguided, incorrect and rude. 3) You completely missed my point and went off the deep end on a tangent. #SMH
Jonathan Cineus Okay, so I must have misinterpreted your comment. My apologies. Would you mind explaining what you did mean? What did this clip predict?
***** To be fair, whilst most post-S10 Simpsons is pretty subpar, that Lady Gaga episode is commonly agreed to be the absolute *worst* (or at least among the absolute worst), even including fans of modern Simpsons. On IMDB, it ranks an average of 4.5/10. No other Simpsons episode even cracks below 5. Not counting clip show episodes, the second-worst ranked episode was the one about Moe's cleaning rag, and that was a 5.8.
***** Holy shit. To truly put how bad Lisa Goes Gaga was rated, the Family Guy episode where Brian gets killed off (the worst ranked FG) is at a 4.1. Just barely below Lisa Goes Gaga. Doing more searching, LGG often gets a mention whenever there's some sort of discussion of "worst episodes of shows".
Back when I was younger I’d probably say I don’t care either because I wasn’t a fan of cats since I had bad experiences with them, I have mellowed over time and have had some good experiences lately 🤣
Homer goes from being so optimistically naive about the way he's being portrayed ("Ooh, portrait!") to putting his head in his hands at 2:30 when they turn on the heat vision cam & Marge comforting him. I never noticed that before, poor guy.
The worst part is that the media poisoned Bart and Lisa against their own father! They hesitated before hugging him then after Homer leaves the room the kids are hugging the TV!
From what I heard, he was a blast to work with, and always got along with his costars so it would make sense that he was having a ball doing this episode.
Each episode is about 25-30 mins long. Assuming they don't take breaks or take their time taking notes in some way Shape or form, they would only be able to watch 2 episodes. The main question now would be what episodes do you show them?
This episode is a masterpiece. Not only is it hilarious with some of the best jokes ever in Golden Age Simpsons (which is saying A LOT), but it's an outstanding critique of cancel culture, social shaming and guilty until proven innocent mindsets that pervade across the zeitgeist today primarily due to the rise of social media.
And I love the way it ends. Homer is only exonerated once more "social media" footage comes forward (Willie's hobby of filming couples in cars), and Marge remarks that justice will be served as long as "everyone is recording everyone else". :)
There is no such thing as "cancel culture". You just don't want to face the consequences of your actions. You can can be as racist, xenophobic or mysogynistic as you want but it will never be acceptable.
It's a shame that this satirical parody has actually become the truth. These days when you commit any crime, social media and the actual media are the judge, jury and executioner regardless of the evidence. And if a court says otherwise people just complain it's corrupt.
the lies of the boston massacre engraving did more damage than any british aggression ever could, not to forget its depiction of Crispus Attucks (sp?) who was the first? victim of "whitewashing" in the history of US media. Im American btw im just not going to deny our history wasnt "shady" at times. Hell we still allow an international terrorist/mass murderer to live comfortably in our country while waging a war on terror o.o
It's indeed depressing that nowadays celebrities with their barely gotten high school diplomas feel important enough to opine politically and have so much arrogance that we should vote according to their ideology or else they will leave the country as if it's a big deal if we lose George fucking Clooney to Canada.
The 1990s was the decade in which the discourse around sexual harassment took off, triggered in part by the Clarence Thomas scandal resulting from Anita Hill telling Congress how he routinely harassed her. #MeToo is an echo of this.
@@diegov1290 Did you forget about the Red Scare? People were deported, blacklisted, lost their visas, connections, freedom, friends, family and sometimes their life if they were falsely accused of Communism. Tens of thousands of Americans lost their jobs.
Yes it certainly does. People get false accusations all the time now and they are vilified before the truth is reveals. Our SJW culture today as well is guilty of that, vilifying and distorting everything today. So yeah, it is.
When I first saw this episode as a teenager, I never understood it as a satire of American media. It didn’t occur to me that the writers wanted to make fun of these types of shows or were even angry at their existence. Who felt more sorry for Ben than the people he landed on. Or am I the only one ? 😆🤣😂
Ben will be fine. The Ben Control team looks very practiced at putting him to sleep, and those are clearly tranquilizer dart guns. :)
This episode is 20 years old and it’s eerie how it managed to predict these media attacks would happen to normal people.
It's not prediction; it's just always been a thing. People are just more aware now because of the internet and social media.
30 years ago, in 1994, when this episode came out, we had stories like this coming out of the White House, and the "tabloidization of the media" was already a depressing trend.
These arent predictions...
The Simpsons predict the future AGAIN!!!
Jonathan Cineus That's what real art does.
TheMagnificentPony agree, don't see a prediction of the future, just the Simpsons brilliantly satirising events back then.
Mr Gecko
1) I’m not assuming that either of these men are innocent.
What did this clip predict?
it's sad that The Simpsons now will never be as funny as the 3 minutes of pure gold here
old simpsons was spot on and had scruples. simpsons has been shit for a while.
Simpsons has been shit for longer than it's been good.
Yeah. Let _that_ sink in.
Like a Site-com that usually spans one decade. The Simpsons should of ended after the 90's
Lol Gentle Ben wasn’t having it 😂
The Simpson's predicted the #Metoo scam long before it happened.
Some shows aren't as great when you go and watch them again, but the Simpsons gets greater.

I would say about equally great, but it was considered godlike in its time so that's no loss.

With a man in the white house!?
When Marge put the cat out, possibly because it was harassed we don’t know!

Homer goes from being so optimistically naive about the way he's being portrayed ("Ooh, portrait!") to putting his head in his hands at 2:30 when they turn on the heat vision cam & Marge comforting him. I never noticed that before, poor guy.
Good catch! I'm always watching the oven :)
The worst part is that the media poisoned Bart and Lisa against their own father! They hesitated before hugging him then after Homer leaves the room the kids are hugging the TV!

If I'd meet a real life space alien, and they asked me for a good representation of human culture, I'd suggest them to watch an hour of the Simpsons.
Each episode is about 25-30 mins long. Assuming they don't take breaks or take their time taking notes in some way Shape or form, they would only be able to watch 2 episodes. The main question now would be what episodes do you show them?
They can watch three episodes in one hour. My three would be:
- "Bart Gets an F"
- "Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire"
- "Mother Simpson"
More like American In-Culture
Nigga you trying to get us killed?
If I had the option for 3
-Life on The Fast Lane
-Cape Feare
-Boy Scouts In Da Hood
This episode is a masterpiece. Not only is it hilarious with some of the best jokes ever in Golden Age Simpsons (which is saying A LOT), but it's an outstanding critique of cancel culture, social shaming and guilty until proven innocent mindsets that pervade across the zeitgeist today primarily due to the rise of social media.
And I love the way it ends. Homer is only exonerated once more "social media" footage comes forward (Willie's hobby of filming couples in cars), and Marge remarks that justice will be served as long as "everyone is recording everyone else".
:)
It's my favorite episode I think. From beginning to end it's golden
There is no such thing as "cancel culture". You just don't want to face the consequences of your actions. You can can be as racist, xenophobic or mysogynistic as you want but it will never be acceptable.
@@goojay6696 Yes, just like Homer faced the consequences for his actions in this episode, he was totally acting out of malice and lust here.
@@goojay6696 It seems that you don't watched Depp/Heard trial.
Man the writers back then where on another level.
It's a shame that this satirical parody has actually become the truth. These days when you commit any crime, social media and the actual media are the judge, jury and executioner regardless of the evidence. And if a court says otherwise people just complain it's corrupt.
Considering the American Revolution gained steam with Paul Reveres' engraved lies id say its always been that way.
the lies of the boston massacre engraving did more damage than any british aggression ever could, not to forget its depiction of Crispus Attucks (sp?) who was the first? victim of "whitewashing" in the history of US media. Im American btw im just not going to deny our history wasnt "shady" at times. Hell we still allow an international terrorist/mass murderer to live comfortably in our country while waging a war on terror o.o
Yeah, it's always been that way. Just now it's on a different medium with the internet
You don't even have to commit a crime. Just be politically incorrect and a few countries could hate you.
It's indeed depressing that nowadays celebrities with their barely gotten high school diplomas feel important enough to opine politically and have so much arrogance that we should vote according to their ideology or else they will leave the country as if it's a big deal if we lose George fucking Clooney to Canada.
20 plus years later, still an accurate and embarrassing snapshot of American media hysteria.
this is satire, it isn't really like that

@@ishmael802 yeah I’m not denying that it wasn’t around back then but it’s more prominent now days
@@adamgriffith-smith9106 No it’s not, because people didn’t question what they saw on media or nearly as much back then.
The 1990s was the decade in which the discourse around sexual harassment took off, triggered in part by the Clarence Thomas scandal resulting from Anita Hill telling Congress how he routinely harassed her. #MeToo is an echo of this.

So yeah, it is.
"Your tears says more than real evidence ever could"
Oh boy, it was a joke back then, it was a joke ...but now 😒
When I first saw this episode as a teenager, I never understood it as a satire of American media. It didn’t occur to me that the writers wanted to make fun of these types of shows or were even angry at their existence.
I saw it as some bizarro version of real life shows and that the humour came from seeing Homer have to go through that. I laughed at it on that level.
