When the world needed him the most, he appeared!
I was literally waiting for this to come out, refreshed my CZcams, and bam. It was there. 9 minutes after release.
same
I was busy so 4 hours late, but I was waiting for it aswell, one whole hour of pure golden knowledge!!!
This is one incredable tutorial...I'm now learning animation in Blender and Joey nails the subject perfectely.
Heya, just finished your tutorial.
Funny enough, there were so many times initially during this tutorial where I thought, "Oh my god, why is _this_ happening? That's not right, I need to fix that!" and then 5 minutes later or so you address that exact issue lol.
After finishing Blender Guru's tutorials I was a bit stumped on figuring out rigging and animation, and your videos have been a _serious_ light in the dark here. You should be proud of your work here.
...Interesting timing for this to come out when I am nearly done retopologizing a model. This will likely be rather useful because I've never done more than a basic rig with automatic weight paints.
Thank you in advance.
nice pfp lol
literally a few second from starting to rig, and you posted right when I needed you.
I was watching this at 12 am trying to rig, had headphones on, and your mic bumping got me going crazy thinking it was in the house
hello guys at 46:11 you can actually just put the shrinkwrap modifier bellow the armature but above everything else it
At 54:14 apply the shrinkwrap modifier on the copy THEN apply the solidify not the other way around
Waited for years for a tutorial like this, God bless you man
This is gonna be great already, I just know it. Thanks for all the hard work you did to help jumpstart us newbies!
wow! perfect timing, i was just needing a tutorial like this!
i waseagerly waiting for this
Literally exactly what I needed. Well, I need quadruped but close enough.
Another amazing video, these guides always helps me a lot

This is very helpful. More rigging tutorials please!
He is back‼️‼️☺️
fr tho your vids are amazing. without you, I wouldnt even know how to move sommet. thx man. appreciate it
Number 1 in tutorials ❤❤

Yes I've been waiting for this, YES!!!
Also, How do you Export the model as an FBX so that I can use my character in like animations?
life saver bro
Love your videos
Joey you are the best 🥳
hello guys if you having problems 10:18 with the mirror modifier not merging if even put on top.
try increase the default merge distance of 0.001 m
Thanks this is pretty helpful
this guy animates just as good as blender open studio
Thanks for the tuts, keep at it please, greetings from chile
Thanks a lot,Sir!
thank you so much bro!
Great stuff! Thanks a lot for sharing this. Subscribed. :) A big ciao from Italy and Long life to Blender :)
Thank you so much 🎉
omg joey you're the best I lo ve you
To anyone having problems with SYMMETRIZE, this is what worked for me:
Rotate your character to face the direction that his character is facing (-Y), delete all your bones, make sure your character absolutely centralized in the middle of the map (z axis doesn't matter) and basically just rebuild everything from the ground up, and this time it'll work
Yeah, this should work but you don't have to delete all your bones. You can rotate them in object mode and press Ctrl A to apply the rotation
@@JoeyCarlino it only worked for me after I redone everything tho, I tried rotating and re-rotating before doing that. It didn't do the job
thanks bro
So underrated
Thanks!!! so much
thanks
I am Pyro. This was very helpful.
rigging for patient people:
Would be nice to have a section about how to make our own control like Rigify
If you mean custom bone shapes, you can set those in the bone properties menu
Also low poly’s coming for revenge
I've redone this part maybe 10 time now and I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. At 36:00 you were able to move the hip bone in pose mode, but mine will only rotate. When ever I parent it to the torso I'm not longer able to transform it with G, it only rotates.
hooooooo OMG! new video.!!!!!
Estou tao feliz
I am using 4.1.1 and at 30:10 the step where you say to apply the 'keep offset' after selecting the IK bone and then the heel is messing up the IK. My model moves the same as yours when moving the hips vertically, but when moving the heel or the IK bone the leg acts almost like my mouse movement is scaled up a couple times and has a light delay.
I have the same issue. Did you find the solution?
@@Krivoruchko the heel shouldn't be parented to the toe. removing the heels parent fixed it for me
also can you make a vid for action lines?
I love you
Amazing video, congrats man, can I ask where I can find the Blender Theme you have for the shapes, I am tired of all sides being grey in solid mode, and yours are really pleasant and colourful.
the matcap options are in the top right of the viewport, the arrow next to the 4 spheres
It took me a while to figure out how to change the color, so in case you also didn't figure it out: click the gray sphere in the dropdown options (while in matcap) to view the different colors. Also check cavity and set it to both if you want it to be even easier to model.
I LOVE UR VIDS pls post more i need to make money
Hey :)
thank you for this amazing tutorial and the other one !
I'm having an issue moving the Hips bone after parenting it to the Root bone, I just don't understand ^^
i can rotate it no problem but no transformation allowed in pose mode is there any extra step that I could have missed ?
I think i found the problem, I accidentaly checked the Auto-IK box and it locked me the transform for bones that have offset parents.
Book animation pls
hey ! i was waiting so much for this part !!
but i dont understand something : before create the armature etc, do you apply the skin, subdivision, shrinkwrap, ... modifiers ??? i try to rig my character but the geometry is .. weird xDD ty so much for you work !
Yeah, apply the skin modifier, I applied it in the last video for this character. Don't apply the other modifiers yet, I talk about why in this one
@@JoeyCarlino ty !
Will you be making the animation part of it, Joey?
No, I don't think so. I have a playlist of character animation videos and I'm planning a few more about animation but not with this character
18:50 how to fix that leg bones connect with hands, eyes moves aside of head and finger bones don't connect with fingers?
could you make a video on how to make GOOD elemental vfx for animation like making fire? i'm not talking about the method of using a displacement modifier with an empty going up or something to create fire that everyone uses, i've found it's not that practical in animation besides a background prop or something, im thinking of elemental attacks like shooting fire or water or lightning coming down, i would love to see a video of that please
I have a video about making fire with geometry nodes, but there is an easier way now with the simulation zone. I have a video about that on the second channel. You could mix the two concepts to get something good
@@JoeyCarlino thank you so much! i'd still like to see a video on how to make a variety of vfx, but thanks for the tip i'ma try it!
when i turn the auto normalize the brush suddenly vecomes way too agresive and paints way too sharp
is it normal for the bones lines to connect to the head bone? my shoulder did that and I can't a proper solution ;v;
hey, for some reason, when i try to symetrize the IK leg at 32:00, is gets rid of the whole leg when I go into object mode, but when I go back to edit mode, it's there again. Do you know what's wrong?
I need help, so I folowed the tutorial up to the point where joey started to apply Ik to the legs. and everytime I move my rig using the IK bone thingy, the rig(the leg portion) just overshoots and overpowers my cursor and springs forward. I am super stumped if anyone has an answer please help.
sir How you are doing mouth sync can you explain please help
I have a video called character animation secrets where I talk about it
How did you subdivide the finger bones into 3 parts?
The menu at the bottom left, as shown in the video
I can’t get the symmetrize option to work. It’s just duplicating the bones without moving them anywhere. Does anyone know how to fix this?
It's hard to know what is causing it without more info. Make sure your bones are named with .L at the end. Maybe you're doing things rotated in a different way than me, or maybe you're not in the center of the world. It could be that the scale or rotation needs to be applied.
@@JoeyCarlino I figured out what the issue was. Apparently symmetrize only copies along the X axis, and my armature was facing that axis.
I need help I can’t find a character without a skeleton and when I delete it,it stops working?
Guysss!!! Help ! Am I the only one that doesn't have the bone selection icon in the top? I'm using Blender 4.1 and I tried every combination possible to select the bones in weight paint mode I just can't do it. What is weird is that at first I had the bone selction icon and it just disappeared. Anybody had the same issue?
:D
Question...
How did Rigify create the drivers for your low-poly human rig?
When I clicked "Generate Rig" I just got the exact same skeleton with no drivers...
It's supposed to do it automatically when the addon is enabled I believe, but I'm not a rigify expert, maybe do some searches or ask in discord or a forum
@@JoeyCarlino It turns out one of the spine connections was considered "disjoint", which I managed to fix just by messing around with it a bit.
And again, thank you for making these!
The leg becomes funkified after I set the constraint to the target.leg anyone know why?
Did you change the pole angle, and make sure the knee is bent like I showed?
@@JoeyCarlino I did! And I made sure the roll was zeroed and all aligned. It's always done this to me. Bleh
@@JoeyCarlino It bends towards the opposite knee. lol
@@JoeyCarlino I found it. the leg.ik.l had deform selected. gosh!
30:46 after doing that my leg starts to spin like crazy at the slightest movement. How can I fix it?
the heel controller was connected to the toe. My fault ;w;
question:what if the character i want to rig is just an egg no arms no nuttin just an egg?
howdo i rig it?
put 1 bone in it
oh. thanks!
so I'm at the mirror rigging part and named the single parts however when its time to symmetrize It doesn't go to the other side but instead overlaps the bones on the same side the original bones are located, how can I fix that issue?
Make sure the origin point is in the center of the world. You can go into object mode and press shift A, apply location, and that should move it
@@JoeyCarlino hello again thanks for responding. I do have the origin point at the center of the world and I did apply it however it won't go to the other side of the mesh. I'm on the leg right now since I had to manually adjust the right side of the arm and the leg is still on the same side just backwards now.
@@JoeyCarlino also love your videos btw they helped me with modeling and now I have two characters that I modeled.
@ohmycoffingaming8551 I'm not sure what the issue is. If you want more detailed help, share a video of the issue on my discord server.
Hi
Hello
Hello
very hard
Good vid, but good lord, what a ball-ache.
Hold up. The last tutorial we joined everything in the collection and the modifiers disappeared. How did the mirror modifier repapered in this tutorial?
I said to keep the modifiers if you wanted to rig it. I just wanted to show how to join everything into a single object because people ask about it in comments all the time.
@@JoeyCarlino Sorry I missed that. Thanks, luckily I saved a copy at each major step.
@tallboy8768 Ah that's good. You can still rig models after applying all the modifiers but it makes it harder to weight paint.
@@JoeyCarlino Super. You're the best ⭐. Thanks for the info
wait what
Good thing I was already unemployed 👍
damn im early
Same. Was not expecting to be this early.
Bh
The real question is how do you actually RENDER anything in blender? Cycles is RIDICULOUSLY long for just a few frames of a single cube with NOTHING Else. Eevee renderr is also a bit slow. How do you even do it?
Eevee is pretty quick
@@JoeyCarlino at 1080p?
Unless you turn the settings up high, you should be able to render a frame in a few seconds on a laptop.
@@JoeyCarlino ONE frame in a FEW seconds? That's ridiculously slow. Adobe animate can render 2d animations in REAL TIME. There's no reason 3d should be any slower
A while ago I made part of a python script that saved the scene to a frame as one was playing it in real time, but I couldn't figure out how to make the output resolution bigger than the 3d view itself
It sounds like you haven't rendered much. What are you doing where you need that kind of speed? Hit render and walk away
I am not Fired I Quit
You're hired
Promoted myself to “Viewer”
I can edit for you
Your too late. The model I made in the last tutorial is a revolting monster, and I don't know how to fix it.
Luckily there is a step by step video of how it was made
I thought I had everybody on my side
But I went and blew it all sky high
And now, Joey Carlino won't even spare a passing glance
All just because I,
ripped my pants
When Blender came round just to put him down
noah banana turned into a clown
And no Blender user ever wants to dance
With a fool who went and ripped his pants
I know, I shouldn't mope around, I shouldn't curse
But the pain feels so much worse
'Cause windin' up with no one is a lot less fun
Than a burn from the sun or sand in your buns
Now, I learned a lesson, I won't soon forget
So listen and you won't regret
Be true to yourself, don't miss your chance
And you won't end up like the fool who ripped his pants
