  • Emmanuel Macron says he will delay reforms that sparked days of deadly riots in the faraway French territory of New Caledonia.
    The French President flew nearly 17,000 kilometers from Paris to the archipelago, which lies east of Australia. At least six people have died in more than a week of violence over plans that would allow more French residents of New Caledonia to vote in local elections. President Macron said he would take stock of the situation within a month.

    • @Masterrunescapeer
      @Masterrunescapeer Před 23 dny +1

      2022 figures are 190k / 3.3m = 5.8% of production that year, and less than 7% of reserves. Reserve numbers are rounded, so % of reserves is actually lower, this is benefit of doubt.
      2023 figures are 230k / 3.6m = 6.4% of production, and 7.1m reserves which is about 5.4% of reserves.
      Also note that Nickel production doesn't have a very high value, it's basically being dumped on the market by Indonesia via Chinese direct investments, so it's not really of "strategic" importance to France (there are just too many alternatives). Those reserves are also what is feasible to extract, so e.g. US figures are influenced by higher wages.

      @@angelcabeza6464 It's France's island. The indigenous should be grateful they have been allowed to live and have rights as citizens there. Now you might say "oh it's terrible that France conquered/colonized it" but it happened and in fact could have been much worse. France could have ethnically cleansed the island 200 years ago. Today this argument wouldn't exist if they had done that. It was within their power. They chose coexistence. Other conquerors could have been much worse. They should make the most of what did happen, speak French and be productive citizens.
