This song made me cry the first time I heard it, and several times after. I think because it illustrates the distance that inevitably comes between us and the people we love. I may not be a musician like the character in the song, but being busy and growing up drove me away from my grandparents; the people who raised me.

    • @RemingtonRidersMusic

@@RemingtonRidersMusic that's the great thing about music, the way a song binds to a memory. When you can remember the exact time and place you were when you first heard it and what was going on in your life at that time. It's pretty incredible.

This is a really good post/comment. Listening to this song always takes me down a path similar to what you describe. My Dad was a farmer, and he was not at all into this type of music, but I think the lyrics of this song would have really touched him. I was too busy with my life to talk to my Dad much of the time. A bad fall helped contribute to later dementia, and missed opportunities are not always afforded to us to be corrected.

My dad is 75 years old. He often thinks of old songs and every week or two when I drive out to see him and my mother he'll ask me " oh..can you bring this sing up on your phone?" Well the other day he asked for this song. I'd heard mant of TTH's songs over the decades and bought several of them. Wow, this song is just incredible. I thought "Clayton Delaney" as his best song...until I played this one for him. Tom T. Hall is indeed "The" story teller!

Even though it’s a terribly sad song, I appreciate the hell out of it for making me think critically about how I should cherish the one’s I still have around

It's the 24th of August, and it's just another night here in Buenos Aires, Argentina. I saw an article on the BBC that Charlie Watts, of the Rolling Stones, died. I clicked on the article and I saw where it mentioned that we lost two great musicians in one week. Curious, I looked to see who the other one was - it was Tom. I immediately thought of my youth and the small town were I was raised in Arkansas. I remembered my father playing Tom T. Hall songs on his acoustic guitar. He would sing the following songs over and over again: "That's How I Got To Memphis", "Homecoming", "I Miss A Lot Of Trains", & "Margie's At Lincoln Park Inn." I have lived in Argentina for many years now, and I'm sure I'll put my foot in the grave here - but until I do, I will always think back to those days in Berrvyille, Arkansas, sitting on a chair by my father's side, listening to him belt out one of Tom's songs. I'll miss him (and my father) each time I hear one of Tom's songs.

This song here was the first song I heard of Tom's....When I was 15 years old I went to live with my dad, after not seeing him since I was 6 years old when my parents split...It was in 2001, and I got my first computer, well I downloaded Napster and showed my dad how to get free music... This was the first song he had me download.. It always stuck with me...

I have always liked Tom T Hall since the 1970's, but the older I get the more I appreciate his talent . His lyrics are always so simple yet descriptive and every song seems to tell a story that I lived in my life. What a treasure he is and so down to earth and ordinary, could be anyone of the thousands of men I have passed by somewhere in my life. Thanks lincolncadillac for putting this up and thanks to Tom for being who you are and sharing your talent with us! People like Tom are so rare in our lifetimes.
Please excuse the edit but I, temporarily, have done a huge injustice to Mr. Hall by not mentioning he is the "Best Story Teller in the world". A worthy title and fact that should never be excluded from any description of this great and multi-talented musician.
Also at this point (as long as I am dribbling on), I would also like to state, that Mr. Hall appears at the top of the list, on my all-time, "top 10 list of people I wished I had for neighbors," just above Bob Newhart. I'm not sure why, just thought that trivial bit of information may come in handy somehow, someday, lol.

Just one time, I'd love to sit down with Tom T and talk to him about this song. It's like a movie or a novel, in song.

I reckon now The Storyteller has had his Homecoming as he winged his way to Heaven. This was my grandparents favorite Tom T song, I guess now both Grandpa and Grandma get to hear Tom sing it to them live in Heaven.

This and the hitchhiker are two of my favorite Tom T songs. I’m a way this one reminds me of my days in the Marine Corps. Not talking or seeing my old man to much but maybe once a year for many years. Being away and people passing away and not able to come. But just a great great song
