If you can't get rid of "disgusting gunk" I recommend to use a small amount of dishwashing liquid foam and then immediately wipe it with alcohol. (repeat few times) It helped me a lot because it can dissolve greasy deposits.

can i use 70% ethanol instead of isopropyl?

I would recommend at least 90% isopropyl and up since it evaporates much faster which is what you want so liquid doesn’t make its way into the ear speaker or internals 👍
Edit: I haven’t used ethanol so I wouldn’t be able to tell you, sorry.

I have 70% isopropyl alcohol. Would that be fine?

I would recommend at least 90% Isopropyl and up . 70% contains more water which you don’t want getting inside. 99% evaporates at a fast rate so it’s perfect for cleaning 👌
