  • In this video we talk about Finnish university scholarships for international students who are coming to study at a Finnish university or university of applied sciences. During the video I answer the following questions:
    There is a lot of misinformation and confusion about the Finnish university scholarship system so in this video I go in-depth and explain everything that you need to know about scholarships for international degree students. As I mention in this video, Phd students have a separate funding system for their research and I will make a separate video about this in the future.

    Hi Oliver! Thank you so much for the video! Great explanation! You helped me a lot since I was looking for more info on scholarships. I’m looking to apply for the nursing program in Finland. Have you made any videos on when the school year/application process starts and how the school year is planned out? I’m from the U.S and I heard it’s quite different in Finland regarding the timeline. Thanks again! You’re amazing!

    • @RoadtoFinnish
      @RoadtoFinnish  Před 3 lety +3

      Hey and thanks so much for the many questions (im finding them one by one :D). So i havent yet done a video on the application schedules (might just do one since its been requested quite a bit) but what i can tell you is that the application for english taught programmes should start around December and close by the end of January. This varies a bit between schools and degree programmes, but this is the rough timeline.
      The school year is also a bit dependent on the school and mostly on whether you study at a university or at a university of applied sciences. However, the academic year is normally divided into two terms. The autumn term starts a new academic year and it kicks off either in late August (mostly used by universities of applied sciences) or in the first week of September (most universities use this). Both terms are divided into periods which are usually 6 weeks. The autumn term has two 6 week periods and the spring term has three 6 weeks periods (5 periods per academic year). Most courses run for one period but some might run for a longer time. At the end of each period we have an exam week (evaluation period).
      Summer holidays land between the first week of June and the end of August. During the summer most students work but you can also do summer school if you want to. The available curriculum is a bit limited, but its a great time to e.g. write your thesis.
      So as mentioned, i might put all of this into a video, but i hope that this helps you at least for now 👍

    • @RoadtoFinnish
      @RoadtoFinnish  Před 3 lety +2

      Hey Olaide and thanks for the good question! Finland has two different application systems for English taught university degree programmes. These are called the _joint application_ and _separate application_. I have a video coming up within the next two weeks explaining these in detail so i wont go too deep into the topic right now. However, heres a summary of university applications and scholarships:
      *University applications in Finland*
      You can apply to university programmes either using the joint application system which allows you to apply to up to 6 different schools or degree programmes at the same time. This is done through the studyinfo.fi/wp2/en/ website (official website run by the ministry of education). The second option is to use what we call separate applications. These applications allow you to apply _separately_ to one university or to multiple degree programmes taught at that same university. However, the idea is that you use separate applications for each school. The separate application can be filled either at the same studyinfo website OR directly through university websites. Which of these is used depends on the university itself (dont worry about it, the university website will direct you to the correct place).
      *Scholarship applications in Finland*
      As a non-European Union citizen you are eligible to apply for a university scholarship. As explained in this video, you apply for scholarships with the same application form that you use to apply to the different universities --> you do not need any additional application forms in order to apply for a scholarship. I will make a step-by-step tutorial about this when the application forms open up in early December.
      I hope that these cleared some of the confusion 👍. Let me know if something was left unclear and id love to give you more details.
      Oh and btw, since you are interested in studying in Finland, there are a few resources that i would recommend you to check out.

    Hi Oliver, Great video as always. I just wanted to ask if the university scholarship requires you to give any test or interview or we just have to mention that we require the scholarship while applying and it will be granted like that?

    • @RoadtoFinnish
      @RoadtoFinnish  Před 3 lety +3

      Hey Ramil and thanks for the compliment and the great question! So i didnt touch on this topic that much in this video because its a separate issue. However, each university has their own ways of allocating the scholarships. Important to note - there are not enough scholarships for all international students SO they are ONLY granted to the best applicants. How exactly this is measured is not clear and the universities are not obligated to publish this information.
      Most of the scholarships that you apply for at the same time that you apply to the school are granted based on who are the best applicants for that school. These do not require any kind of additional tests but rather they are simply granted based on the university applications themselves. However, do note that some university applications do include a test of some kind. These can be either standardised aptitude tests like the SAT's, GMAT's, IELTS, TOEFL or something similar. The points from these tests will definitely impact not only your chances of getting accepted to the school, but also your chances of getting a scholarship.
      The second type of scholarships that are most commonly available are 'incentive based' scholarships. I talked briefly about them in the video. These kinds of scholarships are not available at every school so you need to check the scholarship pages of those universities that you are interested in. These types of scholarships are usually granted to students who are able to progress with their studies at a good pace and with good grades. Do note that these types of scholarships are also not always named 'incentive based' so just keep this in mind.
      This was a bit messy so let me summarise: no, scholarships are not granted to students just like that. Scholarships in Finland are merit based and they are only granted to the best applicants. There are also incentive based scholarships that reward you for good progress with your studies.
      Did this clarify this at all or did i just make it more confusing?

      @ramilharsh7357 Před 3 lety +2

      Thank you so much, this really helped me. I was a bit confused about this topic because when I approached a consultant he said that scholarships are only granted for second year in masters and they always require a test or interview to grant it.

    • @RoadtoFinnish
      @RoadtoFinnish  Před 3 lety +2

      Emm... not sure who that consultant is and i dont want to make too hasty assertions but it seems that either he doesnt know what he is talking about or he was talking about a very, very specific type of scholarship that a specific university has. I can say with 100% certainty that scholarships in Finland do not work like he said unless its some kind of a weird special case.

      Hey Frederico and thanks for the great question! Also, huge congrats on being admitted to the Phd programme! The university of Helsinki is the best research uni in Finland and im sure that you'll be extremely satisfied with the school.
      To your question, this is a tough one. Ive mentioned this in a few live streams but my older brother is actually doing his Phd at the University of Eastern Finland in the field of biology and he is a master in grant applications. The Phd students at the UEF have to basically fully fund their own research (through grants and other third party funding) and my brother has done really well with this. In addition, he has also been working part-time during the weekends and sometimes during the days. This is possible especially during times when he has been waiting e.g. for lab results in order to move to the next stage of his research.
      We've been planning on doing a bunch of videos on this topic starting in early 2021. The reason i dont talk about this myself is simply because i have no personal experience and id rather let my brother do the talking. I know that these might come a bit late for your situation but i hope that they will still provide you with value once i get those darn videos online 😏

The issue is that the exact process is not public and the exact requirements for scholarships depends on the university. This is a super common question and im really frustrated that im not able to provide any insights here.
      What i could try to do is to actually contact a few universities in Finland and ask whether they would be a) willing to conduct an interview about the topic or b) just give me some insights into the process so that i could make a video about the topic.

I just finished my engineering bachelor's degree around 1 month ago, I was an exchange student in Finland the last yesr and I fell in love like a lot, and I am really looking forward to study a master degree at Aalto University; the thing here is that I have read that more or less the application period is in December... but one requirement is to have like the "degree or title" before august of the next year... anyways, I am from Mexico and also due to the situation the paper that has like the title that says that I am an engineer may take around 1.5 years... but tbh I wouldn't like to wait one more yesr to apply... so , by chance, do you know that if I apply and in case that I am accepted, is there any kind of help with waiting for that paper from Aalto University's part? Like with having sth which says that it is already in progress? Can you help me eith that? 🥺 thankyou!!!

      Hey Josué and thanks for the question! This is an interesting one and I think that there is a bit of confusion about this. So what you need is the following:
      1. Certified copy of a Bachelor's degree certificate
      2. Original official transcript of study records or a certified copy
      3. Authorised translations if the degree certificate and the official transcript of records are not in Finnish, Swedish or English
      4. Original official transcript of study records (or a certified copy) and a certified copy of a degree certificate of any other higher education degrees you wish to be considered in admission
      So the only things you need are documents from your school that say that you have a bachelors degree. I hope that this should not take long to get from your school.
      I hope this clarifies this a bit 👍

      @RoadtoFinnish  Před 3 lety +2

      Hey Arbaz and thanks for the positive feedback, i do appreciate it.
      How many days of classes you have depends on a lot of different variables and its impossible to give you an estimate. In Finland students have almost full autonomy on planning our personal study plan and this means that you can decide how many courses you take per term. Since you can choose which courses you want to take in which teaching period, your week might look very much different each period (we have five 6 week period per academic year).
      However as an example, how i planned my masters was so that i (most often) had classes only 4 days per week. One day would be totally free for me to use for case work. However, this would depends quite heavily on the courses.
      So again, this will depend 100% on how you plan your studies.

    Hi Oliver! Is it possible to have any financial aids (to cover living expenses) from the Finnish government for European students?

    • @RoadtoFinnish
      @RoadtoFinnish  Před 3 lety +3

      Hey Fernanda and thanks for the question. Unfortunately this is not generally possible. The Finnish government does not, in general, provide any financial support international students. There are a few rare exception to this rule. The following is stated on the website of the Social Insurance Institution of Finland (Kela): www.kela.fi/web/en/financial-aid-for-students-eligibility
      If you are not a Finnish citizen and have come to finland for study purposes, the general rule is that you cannot get financial ad if from finland.
      However, you may qualify for financial aid if:
      - you have been granted a continuous (A) or permanent (P) residence permit or an EU residence permit for third-country nationals (P-EU or P-EY). If you are a citizen of an other EU or EEA country or of Switzerland, the family member of such a person, or a citizen of a nordic country, you only have to register your right of residence or present your residence card
      - if you are living in finland permanently and
      - you have arrived in finland for some other reason that to study. Such a reason can for example be employment, family ties or return migration
      If you are a citizen of another EU or EAA or of Switzerland, you can get financial aid even if you have come to finland to study
      - You can get financial aid if you are employed in finland for at least 4 months with an average of at least 10 hours of work per week, or if you have take out statutory pension insurance for self-employed persons. The entitlement to financial aid for students only continues for the duration of the employment
      - You can also get financial aid If toy have been granted the right of permanent residence in Finland under the Alienc Act
      So while there is a chance to get financial aid as an EU citizen, I would definitely first discuss this matter with someone from the insurance institution. You can find their contact information from the Kela website that I linked above.

      Hey Aladdin and first of all huge congrats on being admitted to Aalto with a 100% scholarship! That is absolutely awesome and you should be proud. This is definitely not easy to achieve so you are already in a small group of people 🥂.
      Your question is a hard one... As i explain in this video (czcams.com/video/H-Ckw7_AY2w/video.html) its not possible for new students to pay for their living costs with part-time work and there arent really that many other options for funding. Basically the best ways for you to cover your living costs are either with your savings or by taking a student loan (not preferable). I cant really say anything else here because i dont know your background and opportunities to save money before you move to Finland.
      About contacting professors - yeah they will not respond to these kind of inquiries. In Finland professors are not tasked with student supports especially when it comes to personal issues. You could always try to contact Aalto student services or Aalto admission services. However, they are most likely not able to help you with this because its the personal responsibility of each student to cover their living costs - especially since most universities in Finland do not offer grants for living costs.
      Just making sure that you are aware of the required funds, you need to have at least 560€ per month for living costs before you apply for a residence permit. This means that if you apply for a one year residence permit, you need to have at least 6720€ on your bank account before applying for a residence permit. If you apply for a one year residence permit you have to apply for an extension each year to cover all of your studies. More information about this on the website of the Finnish immigration service: migri.fi/en/means-of-support
      When you apply for your first residence permit, you can apply for a 1 year or 2 year permit. If you apply for a 1 year permit, you have to have 6720€ on your bank account before applying for the permit. However, if you apply for a 2 year permit, you need to have 2*6720€ = 13440€. One of the reasons to apply for a one year residence permit is that while you are allowed to work while studying in Finland, the Finnish immigration service is not going to allow you to _rely_ on work to pay for your living costs _during your first residence permit_. This is a bit complicated so bare with me. This means that if you apply for a 2 year residence permit, you have to have that 13440€ on your account even if you apply for a job. However, if you apply for a 1 year permit, you only need to have the 6720€ for the first year AND you can apply for a part-time job in order to pay for your living cost starting in the second year. This basically means that you should already start working during your first year so that you can save up enough money for the next academic year.
      Sorry, this is super complicated but if i summarise all of this:
      - Universities are unfortunately not able to help you with your living costs and contacting professors will not help here
      - You have to have at least 6720€ on your bank account before you apply for a residence permit
      - This money can be either your savings, money from your parents or e.g. a student loan
      - If you apply for a 1 year residence permit, you should apply for a job right away after moving to Finland so that you can save up the 6720€ (that you need per year) before the start of the second academic year
      Please let me know if this was too confusing and/or if i need to elaborate a bit more on the topic. Anyways, i hope that this gives you a bit more context around the topic. Also once again, huge congrats on your admission 👍

    • @28Aladdin

      @@RoadtoFinnish Thank you very much for the detailed response. You are really an awesome one.
      But what about student unions? Are they receiving monthly salary or support? I hope that having initial funds for around two months and starting working there is possible, am I right? I already applied to student unions and one translation company (since I have background, even if I am an engineer).

    • @RoadtoFinnish
      @RoadtoFinnish  Před 3 lety +1

      So out of these two options, the translation job will be the only good option. Student unions do have some paid employees but you have to take into account that most of the positions are volunteer based and do not pay anything. The issue with paid positions at e.g. Aalto University Student Union is that most of the paid positions usually require you to have quite a bit of experience about the Finnish university life and culture. Plus they usually have a lot of applicants so they will always prioritise people who are already further in their studies and have experience in the Finnish university system.
      If you are looking for part-time jobs that you can start right away, i can recommend that you check out different food delivery jobs e.g. from Wolt (the biggest food delivery company in Finland). Its not glamorous but it can pay quite nicely if you get to know the city well and you optimise your work hours. You can check them out here: wolt.com/en/couriers A lot of new students do these kinds of jobs because they are flexible and also have the potential of paying well if you work hard.
      To your question about having funds for around two months before moving to Finland - this is unfortunately possible. The Finnish Immigration Service will not grant you a residence permit unless you already have the funds for the entire first year before you apply for the residence permit. Again, more about this on their website: migri.fi/en/means-of-support The reason behind this is that its really hard to find a job that pays enough to cover your living costs as a new student, and since the social welfare programmes in Finland are only for Finnish nationals and for those with a permanent residence permit, the Finnish immigration service will not allow you to immigrate here unless they are certain that you can survive financially.
      Its a crappy situation but its the way the system works at the moment...

There is no minimum gpa requirement in order to apply. However, the questions about minimum requirements to actually get a scholarship is a different question. The minimum requirements for being granted a scholarship depend on the university, the individual degree programme and for example the level of the applicants in general. Scholarships are granted only to a small amount of best students (the exact amount depends on the programme) and the exact requirements are not public information --> the universities are not required to disclose the exact requirements to the public.

      To your question about connecting you with people who have studied in Oulu or at LUT, i actually dont know anyone personally who would have done their degrees in those schools. However, if you have any general questions about business studies in Finland, id be happy to help you out personally. You are welcome. Happy to help 👍
      About student apartments: in Finland universities themselves do not provide any accommodation themselves but instead we have a bunch of third party organisations that take care of building and renting out student apartments. There are different organisations for this in each major university city but a general rule is that these are often either non-profits or student run organisations that have a mission to provide students with affordable housing.
      As an Aalto student, there are basically two options for you. You can either apply for housing from Hoas which is a non-profit organisation (and also founded by the largest student unions in the capital region) and the largest student housing provider in the capital region. They have more than 10 000 apartments around the capital region in a range of locations. Anyone studying at a university or university of applied science in the capital region is allowed to apply for their apartments. As a disclaimer, Hoas is also one of the sponsors on the channel but as mentioned, they are a non-profit and ive also been living in their apartment all through my studies and its been absolutely wonderful. You can check out Hoas apartments here: www.hoas.fi/en/
      The second option as an Aalto student would be to apply for apartments from the Aalto University Student Union or AYY in short. By Finnish law, there has to be a student union for each university and the union is a representative for all of the school's students. Many of the these unions in Finland are over 100 years old and they have made huge investments into student apartments over the years. AYY also has apartments around the city but they also have some really nice apartment inside the Aalto campus. These are super popular and the queues are really long but the apartments around the city are also incredible. You can check out the AYY housing page here: www.ayy.fi/en/housing
      With these two options, you are basically guaranteed to get a nice and super affordable apartment for the duration of your studies. The only thing to keep in mind is that you have to apply for the apartments early because there are not enough apartments for all incoming students. If you are interested, i have a full playlist where i actually talk about the types of apartments that are common in Finland, how much apartments cost, how and when to apply for student housing etc.. I also have two simple apartment tours that i recommend you to check out. They give you a good idea of what to expect. @RoadtoFinnish  Před 2 lety

      Thats actually a great question. I know a huge amount of people from Aalto school of business from a range of programmes who worked part-time alongside their master's. To be honest, i think that basically all of my friends did work part-time or even full-time alongside their studies at some point. The same is true for me as well. I used to work first part-time and then full-time while doing my master's and while this is naturally a more complicated topic than what im making it seem like here, my personal advice is that working part-time while you are doing your courses is a good idea BUT i would advice you to avoid working while working on your thesis.
      Juggling courses and work is still ok and whether this is possible depends quite a bit on your employer and how flexible they are in terms of your work hours. Its important to take into account that your courses will change every 6 weeks so your school schedule changes quite often. Also, depending on how you plan your studies and what kind of courses you choose to take, you might have to have some where attendance is mandatory. So having fixed working hours might not work that well. However, in my experience there are plenty of employers in the field that allow you to work flexible hours so that you can go to school for classes and exams when ever its needed.
      Having said the above, writing a master's thesis is a big undertaking and it requires you to really put a lot of thought and effort into one single paper. My personal experience was that getting into the zone and being able to write good and thoughtful text requires that you dont have to focus on anything else. I struggled with my thesis for almost 2 years because i was working full-time during the day and then desperately attempted to get into the zone in the evenings and during the weekend. However, this did not work for me. In the end i ended up resigning from my 9-5 and focusing on my thesis full-time while making some videos on the side.
      Whether you are able to work part-time and to write your thesis while working is naturally a personal question and it depends on your ability to balance the two. However, this is just my experience and the experience of quite many of my friends. One more thing that should be said, another recommendation of mine is not to work during the first semester once you have arrived to Finland (the academic year is divided into two semesters). A few reasons for this:
      1. Coming to a new country, new culture and new studies is stressful enough and you are bound to have at least some kind of a culture shock. So its not smart to mix up even more stress and responsibilities by taking on a job.
      2. In Finland the student experience is a huge thing for university students. We love to have a lot of fun and if you spend all of your days at school and the evenings at work, you are going to miss out on the entire university experience.
      3. Finding a job in Finland as a student is hard - not just for internationals but also for local students. If you start looking for a job right after you have arrived into the country, you will waste most of the time spent in job hunting simply because you dont know what you are doing (when, where and how to look for jobs). Spending the first semester simply by getting to know the local ways, networking with other internationals and more importantly with local students will help you a lot once you start looking or a job after the first semester.
      There you go 🤓

    Hi Oliver, hello from Bangladesh! I am looking forward to apply for Jan 2022 intake. Though it's way too early, I was wondering about the best possible university for doing Masters in Business related subjects (like: Digital marketing, Management, Sustainable business management, Data analytics etc). I already complete my Bachelors and MBA 5 years back. My background is Marketing. I have been working in relevant industry since 2012. I am confident about scoring 7.5 in IELTS. I will be needing to secure 100% tuition fee scholarship at least. All in all. do you have any suggestion for me regarding the best possible university with good prospect of job and PR eventually? Thank you!

    • @RoadtoFinnish
      @RoadtoFinnish  Před 3 lety +3

      Hey and thanks for the super interesting question and for sharing your background! I would absolutely recommend that you consider Aalto University as the #1 choice. They have the best business school in the country and im sure that you are a prime candidate for them considering your extensive background. Not only does Aalto business graduates have excellent job prospects (some stats about this can be found here: www.aalto.fi/en/school-of-business/school-of-business-graduates-in-working-life#:~:text=Majority%20of%20the%20graduates%20of,other%20entities%20or%20employ%20themselves.) but having a degree from Aalto would definitely be the best option in terms of your CV both in Finland and abroad.
      I think you will have excellent chances of securing a full scholarship. Im not an expert in this regard, but you have a very unique background compared to most other applicants so this would most likely make you a great candidate for an Aalto scholarship. I would also argue that you have an excellent opportunity to also secure a job in a relevant field as soon as you get into the country. This is just my personal take, but i think that you will do great compared to any applicants who come e.g. straight from high-school.
      I talk quite a bit about the fact that its very hard for new students to secure a part-time job when they arrive to study in Finland (more so if they come to study a bachelor's degree) but i think you would be a prime example of an exception to the rule. If you wish to work part-time while studying, you simply need to know where, when and how to look for jobs but after you nail those, you should be golden.
      I have to admit that i dont remember you being a member of our Discord server so since you are interested in these topics, i highly recommend that you join our server. Hey Arjun! The finnish immigration service states the following:
      "If you are granted a residence permit for studies, your spouse and children can be granted a residence permit on the basis of family ties" (source: migri.fi/en/studying-in-finland)
      More information on residence permits on the basis of family ties can be found here: migri.fi/en/moving-to-finland-to-be-with-a-family-member What you need to take into account is that you and your spouse must be able to secure an income and you cannot rely your their (your spouses and your childs) residence permits on government financial support. Do note that these are processed on a case-by-case basis so i recommend that you contact the finnish immigration service on the topic. Hey Mohamed and thanks for the question. As mentioned in the video, scholarships depend on the school and the degree programme that you are applying to. However, all degree programmes in Finland taught in English do offer scholarships for their best students. Its important to understand that there are no "general scholarships or grants" that you could apply to so this is an impossible question for me to answer.
      Before we can talk about scholarships, you would first need to find the right schools and degree programmes (in BBA) that you want to apply to.

      Hey Ika and thanks for the question! Yes indeed, many universities in Finland offer 100% scholarships for their best applicants. However, most of these only cover your tuition fees and only a few scholarships also cover living costs like rent. The scholarships are provided by the universities themselves and how many scholarships there are and how much of your tuition fee they cover depend not only on the university but also the degree that you are applying for. Did you already have a field in mind? If yes, i could look up a bit more information for you.

      Hi Ahmed and thanks for the question. To be honest, im not sure if you can study clinical psychology in Finland in English. Im not 100% sure but at least i couldnt find anything even after a while of searching. What this indicates is that is that clinical psychology is either
      a) not available as a separate degree but rather as a part of degree that has another focus
      b) not available at all in English
      c) something else
      The reason why i think clinical psychology might not be available in English is because the health care sector in Finland is highly regulated and you have to generally speak fluent Finnish in order to work in the sector. This is at least the most common reason for many health care related fields not being taught in English in Finland.
      The closes programme that i found was the Master's degree programme in human neurosciences that i being taught at the university of Turku (which is a a great school btw): www.utu.fi/en/study-at-utu/masters-degree-programme-in-human-neuroscience On this page you can see the programme structure which should tell you quite a bit about the contents of the studies.

      @RoadtoFinnish  Před 3 lety +1

      Hey Heliana and thanks for the great questions. Unfortunately i cant name specific schools that have scholarships for psychology or humanities simply because all Finnish universities that have English taught programmes also have scholarship programmes for non EU and EEA citizens. So you simply need to find a school that has English taught Master's degree programmes in those fields. In addition, there are not country specific scholarships in Finland. For these, i would recommend that you reach out to the Colombian monistry of education. Usually if there are any country specific scholarships, they are granted by your home country, not the host country.

      Yup thankyou for responding , the only thing is she moved to Finland in 2014 when there was no tuition fees and now there are huge tuition fees especially for non eu students (third world country citizens )who are already less fortunate enough

    • @RoadtoFinnish
      @RoadtoFinnish  Před 3 lety

      I feel you.. its unfortunate that the tuition fees are so high, but considering the level of education you can get in Finland they are pretty much on par with international standards. The decision to take tuition from non-EU citizens was done in the Finnish parliament so its written in the law and theres really not that much that we can do about them.
      My best (and only) advice for anyone who wants to study in Finland for free is to study really hard in high school and for ones SAT's or any other tests that one has to take. Quite a lot of people have been asking me whether or not they could avoid tuitions and the fact that you have to study super hard for these tests (in order to get a scholarship) by applying for a Finnish taught degree. While this is (in theory) possible because there are no tuition fees in Finnish taught degrees, what people dont understand is that applying to a Finnish taught degree requires you to speak close to native level Finnish and you would need to compete against the spots at the uni against native Finnish applicants. The tests to be admitted to a Finnish taught degree are even more rigorous than any tests that you have to do in order to be admitted to study in English so ive always told people not to even think about it.
      👆 i didnt mention this because i think that youd try it but rather to give a bit of perspective to the lenghts that people are "willing" to go in order to avoid tuition fees. However, no matter where you come from, getting a free education in Finland nowadays takes a huge amount of effort. However, it is definitely worth the effort if/when you get admitted.

      Hey and thanks for the question! It is my understanding that there are no English taught undergraduate degrees in Finland in these fields. This is due to a bunch of reasons and i cant go into them here. However, as a bit of context, the following universities in Finland offer medical degrees:
      - University of Helsinki
      - Tampere University
      - University of Turku
      - University of Eastern Finland
      - University of Oulu
      All of these schools still teach their undergrads in Finnish. However, some of them do offer different master's level medical degrees that you could apply for after doing your undergrad.
      The only university in Finland offering a degree in veterinary studies is the University of Helsinki. However, the undergraduate degree is also taught in Finnish.

    Hei , My name is Kour, I have been in Finland for 9 years. I have a sister who lives in India, she has passed 12th class this year and now she is willing to do nursing course and I want that she will do her course from Finland because the level of study of Finland is very good of the world.
    How to Apply Nursing cours 2021 in Finland, We need your help, can you help us? Thanks

    • @RoadtoFinnish
      @RoadtoFinnish  Před 3 lety +1

      Hey Kour and thanks for the great question! So nursing is a bit of an issue because most universities of applied sciences that teach nursing in Finland require you to have at least B1 or B2 level Finnish language skills in order to apply. This is because a large part of the studies consists of clinical practices that happen in Finnish language environments. So this makes finding the correct institutions a bit difficult.
      However, there are a few schools that do not require this. The best choice in this regard would be SAMK (Satakunta University of Applied Sciences) which has the next application periods in January and in March 2021: www.samk.fi/en/study/bachelor-degree/nursing/
      Another option is to apply to study a degree in nursing through a service called Edunation. Edunation is a Finnish company that offers an alternative way of applying to study in Finland and they work with SAMK as well as with Metropolia University of Applied Sciences.
      The programme at SAMK that you apply through Edunation is the same programme i mentioned above BUT applying through Edunation is a bit easier compared to applying through the studyinfo.fi website. Heres a direct link: www.edunation.co/study-in-finland/universities/satakunta-university-of-applied-sciences/bachelors-degree-nursing/ I actually have a couple of videos coming up about Edunation in early January explaining this in more detail so make sure to check those out when they come online.
      The bachelors in nursing from Metropolia is a rather new degree and the next application period is to be announced a bit later. However, i would still keep an eye out for it because Metropolia is a really good school for this field. You could always reach out to Edunation and their Indian offices to ask about the upcoming application dates: www.edunation.co/study-in-finland/universities/metropolia-university-of-applied-sciences/bachelors-degree-health-care-nursing/
      So yeah, these 👆are the best two options that im aware of. Again, the big issue is that most programmes (even though they are taught in English) do require at least basic Finnish language skills. This is simply because the majority of your patients will be Finnish and many especially older people cant speak English fluently enough to communicate about their health issues with a nurse.
      Do let me know if you have any additional questions that i could help out with. Also, since your sister is intersted in studying and working in Finland, i do recommend that she would subscribe to the channel for future videos. Hey and thanks for sharing your experience. Also i do apologise for the long wait. CZcams doesnt, for some reason, give me notifications about all comments so i never saw yours. Anyways, the most likely reason for the schools to have rejected your application was the lack of proof of you language skills. The schools that you mentioned do require B2 or B1 level Finnish (varies between schools) before you apply to the nursing degree. Some of the schools require you to take an official language proficiency test to prove your language skills. I havent checked their websites in quite a while and since i have not done your application for you, it is impossible for me to say for sure what went wrong with your application. However, a common mistake that people make is that they forget to add a mandatory attachment to the application.
      Since the next application period to these schools through the studyinfo.fi website is next january, i would recommend that you check out Edunation and the nursing programme offered by metropolia. Edunation is a finnish company offering an alternative path to apply to finnish universities and universities of applied sciences. I have made a video about them explaining what they do that you can check out right here: czcams.com/video/2foUTOZFJSE/video.html They have a super simple application system and they are able to help you quite a bit more compared to me. This is the link to the nursing degree that you can apply through them: www.edunation.co/study-in-finland/study-programs/health-and-sports/

    • @RoadtoFinnish
      @RoadtoFinnish  Před 3 lety +2

      Hey Sara, this depends on the school that you apply to. Each school has their separate scholarships and each of them have slightly different requirements. E.g. many bachelor's programmes in business (or economics) do not require you to do the IELTS. For example, Aalto University Bachelor's programme in Economics does not require you to take the IELTS. Instead, you need to take the SAT's which are also enough to prove your proficiency in English. More information about this on their website: www.aalto.fi/en/study-at-aalto/admission-to-the-bachelors-programme-in-economics-bachelor-and-master-of-science-in
      About full scholarships, as mentioned in this video, scholarships are granted on a competitive basis. This means that getting a full scholarship (if the school has offers one) depends on how well do you do in your application. For example, Aalto University has two types of scholarships - 50% tuition fee waivers and 100% tuition fee waivers. Getting a 100% scholarship required you to be in the best group of applicants. However, the exact requirements and what is defined as the "best applicant" is not public information so i cant say anything for sure.
      Anyways, i hope these get you started 👍

      Thanks for the question! This will depend on the programme that you apply to. Each university degree programme in Finland has different application requirements and many of them do not take your high school diploma into account. Rather, many of the admissions are graded simply based on your SAT's, GMAT's or other tests, motivation letter or other required documents.
      Also do note that most universities in Finland do not publish the exact requirements for getting a scholarship so its impossible to say for sure what the minimum requirements or scores are.
      What i would recommend is that you read the exact application requirements from the website of the programme that you are interested in. That website will contain all the information you need 👍.

      So to answer your question, we do not really do MBA's in Finland. Instead we do a Master's degree at a university. MBA's are mostly for people who have a Bachelor's degree and have years of work experience and/or they have to do a graduate degree alongside their work. In Finland it is far more common to first do your Bachelor's and immediately after that do a Master's degree.
      So based on this, i would recommend that you apply for a Master's in business and economics. I would recommend that you start looking at the different Master's degrees from Aalto University. Not only have i done my bachelor's and master's at Aalto, but its also the highest ranking university in Finland so getting a degree from there will give you great career prospects for the future. You can check out their master's degrees from this website: www.aalto.fi/en/school-of-business/masters-programmes
      To answer your question about costs for master's degrees. All english taught university degrees in Finland have annual tuition fees. Aalto university is pretty expensive and their master's degrees are 15.000€ per year. I have explained tuition fees in this video: czcams.com/video/Z_4VUUvODdM/video.html
      While the tuition fees for Aalto are expensive, they also have really good scholarships that they grant their best applicants. I broke down all the scholarships for aalto university in this video: czcams.com/video/x78pxrqxSek/video.html
      To answer your last question, the exact requirements for a master's degree depends on the school and the exact programme that you are applying to. What i would recommend is that you look up a programme that you are specifically interested in, go to their website and read the exact application requirements from there. Aalto university has very exact information about their application requirements on each programme website.
      I hope that this gets you started 👍

      Its impossible for me to whether or not doing a second degree is worth it for you. A MBA is already a higher degree so doing another master's degree is definitely not needed. It could give you some advantage in the job market BUT you should note that in Finland it is not common to do two master's level degrees. Again, all of this depends on your background (grades, courses taken, prior work experience etc...).
      One caveat is that if you want to work in Finland, doing a degree here can be of benefit because it is a great way to get a residence permit. Getting residence permits for work can be a bit cumbersome while getting a residence permit for studies requires that you are admitted to study in a Finnish university. Once you graduate it is pretty easy to get a residence permit for work.
      No you do not need Finnish in order to get a job as a business graduate. There are naturally some companies that require Finnish because they have a 100% Finnish staff and customer base. However, there are plenty of great employers that do not require you to speak Finnish. However, please take into account that this AGAIN will depend on your background. As an example, its easier to find "international jobs" (that do not require Finnish) in technology companies, the financing sector and other more international sectors while jobs at small marketing companies that mostly serve Finnish customers do most likely require you to speak Finnish. I hope you get where im coming from.

      OliverR Hi dear Oliver, I would like to study Psychology in English

      @@omaresk8181 ach darn.. this is actually a complicated topic and I actually looked into it quite a lot a while ago when an other viewer asked about the same topic. I reached out to the Finnish psychological association for some answers and this is what I learned (copy & pasted from my earlier comment):
      *Bachelors degree programmes in psychology in finland*
      There are no English taught bachelors level programmes in psychology in finland.
      *Applying for a programme in psychology in Finland*
      First of all, I found that Finnish universities have a very small number of positions for students who apply directly to a Master’s programme. Instead, the clear majority of Master’s students are admitted automatically when they graduate from their Bachelor’s programme. This is pretty much normal practice in Finland because we usually don’t have to separately apply for a Master’s programme. Rather, when admitted to a Bachelor’s programme, we are automatically granted the permission to do a Master’s as long as we do finish the Bachelor’s within a predetermined time period.
      An issue with both the Master’s and Bachelor’s programmes is that both require you to pass an entrance exam that is same for all applicants across the country and for both degrees. Since the exam is the same for both Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees, and because there are more spots for the Bachelor’s programme, my contact in the Finnish Psychological Association suggested applying for a Bachelor’s degree. This simply increases your chances to get in.
      The second issue is that this entrance exam can only be done in Finnish or Swedish. This entrance exam is based on materials that are published one month before the exam so you don’t have much time to prepare. The biggest problem, however, is that even if you were able to study Finnish to an acceptable level, you are competing over the same spots with Finnish applicants who have an advantage in being native speakers.
      In order to even apply for a degree, you need to be able to prove your language skills with an official test. You can do this in multiple ways, but id guess the easiest for you would be to complete an International Baccalaureate (IB) degree where you have achieved one of the following:
      → Finnish language studies (A1) with a minimum score of 2
      → Finnish language studies (A2) with a minimum score of 5
      → Finnish language A studies (with one of the following: literature | language and literature | literature and performance) with a minimum score of 2
      Good to note that even if you pass these language requirements, it does not guarantee that you are able to study the material for the exam efficiently.
      *Moving from Bachelor’s to Master’s*
      As mentioned above, after completing your Finnish Bachelor’s degree, you are entitled to start studying your Master’s without any other certification. This is common practice in Finland across most degrees (there are some exceptions in medicine where you have a mandatory internship between the degrees). Problems come if you have a Bachelor’s degree that is completed abroad. In order to do your Master’s degree in Finland, you need to complete 60 ECTS worth of basic psychology studies that are equivalent to those done in Finland. If your courses do not fufill these criteria, you might have to redo some studies in a Finnish university (this is also why my contact recommended applying for a Bachelor’s degree).
      *Practicing after graduation*
      Psychology is a regulated profession in Finland and it requires a Master’s degree completed in Finland before you can legally practice the profession. This certification is issued to all Master’s graduates and it does not require any extra certifications. Again, issues might come up if you have a Master’s degree from abroad. The issue is once again the local criteria that need to be matched. If your degree does not match the Finnish criteria, you have to take some extra studies + an adaptive training period that prepares you for the Finnish health care system.
      *Some thoughts from my contact*
      In addition to the previous info, my contact at the Finnish Psychological Association told me that she does not know any foreign psychology students in Finland. This is simply because being admitted through the entrance exam is so difficult for any non-native speakers. She emphasised that passing the test is not impossible, but you really need to consider is it worth the effort. She also said that in her experience, being admitted to study psychology on a Masters level is much easier in other countries and she recommended looking at other options.
      This is a direct quote from the end of her email: “I don’t want to discourage him, but it’s a shame if he ends up applying year after year without ever being admitted.”
      *My thoughts*
      Im sorry if this feels discouraging, but based on all the information that I’ve received, I can’t personally recommend applying to study psychology in Finland UNLESS you are absolutely certain that you can pass the language requirements.
      Again, I don't want to discourage you but the problem is that at least currently, psychology as a profession is heavily regulated and its really hard to study it in finland as an international student...

    • @RoadtoFinnish
      @RoadtoFinnish  Před 3 lety

      @@joshuanakasamu9957 Gotcha. So depends on which scholarships you are talking about. Aalto has in general two types of scholarships available (at least as of May 2021 for anyone reading this at a later date). These are the tuition fee waivers and the incentive based scholarships. Tuition fee waivers are the more important ones because they cover either 50% or 100% of your tuition fee for the entirety of your studies. the incentive based scholarship is based on your academic performance at Aalto and its 1500€ per year max.
      You actually apply for these two scholarships at a different time. The tuition fee waiver you apply for using the same application form that you use to apply to the university. This means that if you want to apply for a tuition fee waiver, you need to do that at the same time as you apply for admission. These cant be applied for afterwards.
      Incentive based scholarships you apply for after each academic year. Aalto university says the following about them:
      _The scholarship is granted if you have completed a minimum of 60 ECTS credits of studies according to your approved personal study plan during one academic year. The incentive based scholarship is 1 500 EUR. The scholarship is paid the following autumn term (or upon graduation, when applicable)._ Source: www.aalto.fi/en/admission-services/scholarships-and-tuition-fees (CTRL + F incentive so find the correct spot on the page).

    Hi! Im an incoming senior highschool student studying in the US but I’m not a citizen yet as I just moved. Right now I’m still a Philippine citizen but I am a permanent resident of the US. I really want to try and make it there in Finland as a student and want to look into different fields where I could go to and apply for scholarships. My main goal was Biotechnology or even English. Do you have any tips for my interests and someone in my position?

    • @RoadtoFinnish
      @RoadtoFinnish  Před 2 lety

      Hey and thanks so much for the great question. So as i mentioned in the video, every university in Finland has their own scholarship programme(s) for international students who come from outside the European Union and European Economic Area. So i would not necessarily be looking for programmes based on their scholarships but rather based on your interests. The problem for me is that there are a hundred and one programmes that i could refer you to that land between biotechnology and english literature so i would need you to be a bit more specific on what you would actually want to study 🙂.
      So just let me know the field that you would like to pursuit, and if the field has a lot of specialisations (like business or engineering), i would appreciate if you had a more detailed idea of what specific major you would be interested in pursuing.
