No doubt on capabilities of Su 30 & our pilots. The question is despite having the world's best missile like Brahmos, why it is not used to shoot down enemy aircrafts that ventured in Indian territory. When we struck Balakot just a few days back, did we not expect a retaliation?
I know it's late but whenever I see this video, I always think that the "Quantity over Quality" argument must be scrapped in the case of Indian Forces.
It happened like this. The PAF backed by USA, somehow wanted to down an SU30. With this PAF pilots will get worldwide recognition and America could push their F22 to IAF for the MMRCA deal. So the PAF was watching the shift change timing of the IAF CAP that day. So at around 10 am , there were only 2 SU30 in the air, as other aircraft had landed for refuelling A 24 aircraft package of PAF fighters took off from different Air bases out of which there 8 were F16. 4 F16s went supersonic and climbed to 35k feet and the other 4 were at 15k ft. The 2 SU30 s which were @ 16k ft engaged the PAF package. By this time 2 Mirage2000 jets joined the engagement. The F16s at 35k ft fired their amraams at the SU30. Unfortunately that day, the range of the R77 on the SU30 was a bit less than the aim120 on the F16. So the SU30 had to dodge the aim120 & they undertook evasive maneuvers. At this instance, the 4 F16S at 15k ft, started climbing to 35k ft ( because BVR missiles have advantage, if fired from a height). The whole PAF package was very busy targetting the 2 Su30 s, that they didn't notice the 2 Mig21 s , (one piloted by Abhinandan) , who sneaked into the action scene from behind the pir Panjal valley. Abhinandan suddenly appeared and directly took on one of the F16, (which was climbing) , with his R73 WVR ( within visual range) missile and downed the F16. In the process he crossed over into POK and he was also hit by another missile. By this time IAF had already despatched more SU30, Mig29 & Mirage fighters and these were approximately 5 mins away from the battle zone, which was picked by the PAF awaacs. The PAF pilots knew, that, once the whole reinforcement from IAF joins the battle, they will be butchered and hence most of the package disengaged and returned to base. The feat achieved by Abhinandan is the same tactics adopted by the IAF in cope thunder 2004 against the USAF.
The F16 were shooting amraam missile from the top of their envelope i.e. 55,000 feet and Indian Su30s were at 15-20000 feet. Hence, Indian fighters did not shoot their r-77 since the endgame would have been useless
