    Matt, I shave my head as well as my face. If my hair (whiskers) is too long, the best plan of attack is to shave with electric hair clippers on the closest setting, then move on to a pleasurable shave with your main squeeze D.E. razor and high fat shaving soap and a brush...no fuss, no muss. Wishing you all the best.

    I have the King C. Gillette razor and it’s a nice mild razor. Perfect for a beginner. I actually keep the blades stocked in my den because they’re easy to get and actually are great blades. Gillette just released a lathering shave cream called “Planet Kind” that Mantic59 did a write up on! Maybe think about including that in an upcoming video! Thanks as always Matt!

  • @MartinOcando
    @MartinOcando Před 3 lety +17

    I have discovered that too mild of a razor causes more irritation than an aggressive one because you need to go over the same place multiple times, much like a cartridge razor. An aggressive razor or an adjustable in higher settings are more efficient and end up shaving much better, especially if you have several days of growth.

    i've shaved with catridge style all my life, since first teenager mustache..approx 17 years. Having very sensitive skin (prone to irritation + weird neck growth pattern) decided to go with DE safety razor (this King C Gilette model)
    -ditched canned shaving creams/gels
    -bought proper shaving cream for sensitive skin
    -bought natural fiber shaving brush
    -bought bowl for making lather
    -bought alum block
    -used packed gilette razor blades that comes with safety razor
    -ditched alcohol based after shave splas, used sensitive balm instead
    Reusults - no irritation, by far closer shave than any catridge ones!. Damn. Also after shaving i'm feeling a lot smoother for few days more (closer shave) compared to catridge systems. Yes at start was a bit more time consuming proces, tends to be more like a ritual. But after few shave sessions i managed to get it done under 7min (with cleaning all the equipment). And I shave once a week. No problem whatsoever for me. Also to all you out there that wanna try, don't give up on first try! give it a chance at least "dull" few blades before you can say okay that's not for me or its for me. Also keep your old catridge razor aside, if you scared to go over some sensitive areas or against the grain, you can finish shaving that way on final pass.

    I just picked one up to give to my Dad for Christmas. I gave it a test run the other day--I really enjoyed it. Didn't have a single nick. Very smooth, and I had pretty good growth on my face, and it cleaned me right up. I usually use straight razors or shavettes, but I've been getting into safety razors, and I got myself a Parker 99R, ultra heavy, extra long with a butterfly door. I really enjoy that one, but it has a bit more bite than I'm used to (I'm still getting use to proper safety razor technique). The King C. Gillette was about as plug-n-play as you can get with a safety razor.

    I"ve used this gel a few times now. I've found the best approach is to lather it up on the hands with a little water and work it into the stubble. I typically don't go beyond 4 day stubble so anything beyond that I can't speak on. But 4 day stubble and a good palm lather with this gel works very well. Two passes and smooth. My ranking is as follows in order of shave perfection meaning zero stubble, perfect BBS, zero irritation: Rockwell 6S 3 Plate, Timeless .95, RazoRock MJ-90A, King C, Fat Boy setting 2. If I sacrifice comfort, my Rex Envoy and Ambassador at 3 feel like my Timeless .95. Again, remember, I do better with less blade feel and more passes and touch ups!

    I wrote the following while watching your first take on the KCG BEFORE seeing your redo: “I’m glad you can admit your experience could be affected by the long whiskers. I agree with you on the KCG shave gel and I think you’d get a better experience with a better lather. Don’t reject a razor because the gel was crap. You should probably try the razor again on a more “regular” length beard.”
    SO YOU DID EXACTLY WHAT I WAS THINKING! I agree with you that this would be a great razor for a young man or a newbie to DE shaving. Overall, I prefer the Gillette heritage inspired razor over the KCG, but I never had such a bad shave as you did when I used that KCG. My daily driver is an ASD2 so I’m used to a mild razor. The King C razor isn't a bad razor for its price. The shave gel is passable for a shave gel but actually works better as a preshave. Not tried the blades yet but at their price point they're a tad pricey and probably other similar performing blades can be found much cheaper.
    In the end Gillette is in the market to purely make money and isn't particularly interested in pandering to the people who see wetshaving as a hobby. Gillette is a mass market company and as long as the majority of people who shave use cartridges or disposables Gillette will keep attending to their needs.
    For those who wish a return to Gillette producing there own US made razors etc. It isn't going to happen. At best Gillette will produce razors in countries with low cost labour with low cost materials and that will only happen when they are forced to through environmental pressures.

    That King C Gillette razor converted me just over a month ago. I was on Amazon pricing out replacement Gillette Skinguard cartridges and that razor popped up. I remember seeing Henson razors somewhere on a youtube ad but it never clicked until that day on Amazon. I was just finally tired of spending so much on the replacement blades. Next thing you know, in maybe 4-5 weeks I now have 5 DE razors including a Rex Envoy and other USA made razors. I will say that the skinguards did work well on my skin but man, on the second shave they were already feeling dull. Some level of skill is needed with DE to get great shaves but once I understood how to find the razor's angle, things improved a ton. I've not used the new King C Gillete yet, but I'm yet another Proraso convert; for the price I still have yet to find anything that takes care of my skin as well.

    I haven't tried the gel, but I have tried their Pure cream. I think it's a good product. I tried the razor and found it to be too mild, even with a Feather blade. Sometimes I do need a mild razor so I go back to this razor or a Feather Popular on those occasions.
    I get ingrown hairs also, especially when using Gem razors or the Weber razor. I find that putting a dab of aloe vera gel onto the ingrown helps to heal it.

    This is my first safety razor and I commonly use either Wilkinson sword or Derby Extra blades, with a shaving soap from Matas. It works decently and certainly performs when you do diagonal strokes (Gillette slide).

    I haven't tried the blades or razor but I did try the shaving gel. I used it with the Rex ambassador on a more aggressive setting than I normally do and it did clog my razor a lot faster but the shave went well; do keep in mind that I only had light stubble on my face and felt that any more growth would have been dangerous to shave with this gel.

    There are reviews on this razor with good shave soap. I’m a newbie, got this razor, watched some vids, ordered good soap (Gentleman’s Nod) and after shave. Works for me. Plan to get an aggressive razor when I’m more confident. Proraso after balm is great for me as well.

    Kudos to Gillette for bringing this new DE razor on a widespread drugstore market. It's all entry level, including it's price. So that's ok. The next step will bring better products.

      I agree.I got into DE razors back around 2008 when I bought a Micro-touch one in RiteAid.I went there to buy another 5 pack of cartridges for 30$ and saw this thing next to it for 15$ and thought fk it,let me try it out.

      @@BrooklynBalla That's great, well done. This is why I find it so important to have entry-level safety-razor products (at entry-level prices) on the shelves. Later, it always remains an option to upgrade with quality artisan products.

    I don’t have as heavy or as wild beard growth as you. This was my first DE razor going from Mach3. I also tried the shaving gel.
    From my experience:
    The blades are really nice, but out the blades I have tried I do prefer Voskhod or gillette platinum over these.
    The razor is a bit too heavy and not grippy enough to me, I have no problem with slipping but I have to grip it firmly. It is very mild, works well on one day to three days growth, more than that it is slightly too mild. It glides well and the build quality feels good.
    The shaving gel is nice but not on long growth. It is however great for touchups. When applying on a wet face it glides well, but proper soap or shaving gel in a can works better. However for really short beard or hard to get areas it works well since you can see the hairs and you can pass over the same area (to get single hairs that might be extra stubborn) it will still glide without irritating the skin.
    Over all the whole line are pretty good products, but the gel are definitely not for shaving but rather styling/touch ups.

    Matt tried the King C Gillette razor. Got it from my local Walgreens. Had a shave and returned it the very next day. Way to mild for myself as well as I also have thick coarse hair.
    Didn’t try the clear shave gel...I prefer using the many great shave soaps from the many great artisans today. I commend you trying your best and giving it a go with the products they want you to use...sometimes it just doesn’t work out.
    Really love the Ambassador and my other DE’s, shavettes, and straights.
    Be well 🥃

    The KCG is an excellent razor with a good blade. With Feather blades it would become more aggressive, but this razor is medium. You could have just used a trimmer to reduce the amount of hair.

    I'm definitely late here, but just my experience:
    Until I changed the HANDLE, the KCG wasn't really good in my hand. The feel of "posibility of slipping out of my fingers" made me to (unintentionally) shave with the razor not so nicely.
    When I changed the handle for the good knurled bulldog handle - wow, the KCG went now just excellent, always pretty close to or full bbs and still without any irritation.
    The biggest flaw of this razor is its handle.
    Have a nice day. Greetings from the Czech Republic.

    I have a much thinner beard than you do and when I really let ‘er rip with the gel I was able to get three passes on the residual slickness. I did however, use a pre-shave before applying the spoo (PAA Cube) and got passable results. I blogged it a couple weeks ago. I was using a super adjustable with a Wizamet blade.
    You probably noticed the goo gets into all the works of the razor! I had to disassemble to clean it out.

    Facial hair that long should be trimmed prior to shaving with a safety razor or a straight razor, that's one of the first things I learned in Barber College.

  • @razvantoma
    @razvantoma Před 2 lety +1

    Yeah, no surprise the razor is not efficient with that kind of hair. No other razor is. Even your single blade was struggling. It's like calling a Honda Civic a bad car because you can go muddying with it. Thanks for coming back and give it another chance. It's a pretty good razor

  • @TheWilkReport
    @TheWilkReport Před 3 lety +1

    I've used the safety razor and the blades that came with it. It's actually a good tool. It gets the job done. I'm not a fan of the barber-pole knurling, or that the knurling only extends part-way down the handle. This is not something you want to take with you into the shower for your shave. I think if Gillette gives future iterations some good, deep diamond cross-hatch knurling that covers the length of the handle and does away with the rounded tip, it'll be much improved. It IS a daily shaver and is NOT for tackling two weeks of beard growth. To use it for such is like trying to use a Weishi 9306 to remove a full beard. Good giving it a second try to get a more accurate evaluation.

    I started with this Razor, then got a Rex Envoy, today is my birthday, and my stupid ass drops it and I dented the edge of the base plate, nothing serious, the shave is unaffected, but man such bad luck. I know it's there and it's annoying me on multiple levels My rant aside, the razor is pretty good as a daily driver when coupled with a good shaving cream. I think it's designed as a beginners razor, which is always a good thing. Brings more people into the hobby. Best wishes and take care.

    This is a super mild razor. My other razor (I only have 2 atm) is fairly mild too, I got it in a beginner starter pack from PAA and that one is considerably more aggressive than this, but I shave almost every day so it does the trick no problem, and I also don't have especially thick facial hair anyways so I don't think I'd have issues even if I let it grow out. I like it a lot though, it feels really natural and it gives me a really nice shave for the price I paid. Only issue I have with it is that it can slip around a bit if you get your fingers or the handle wet, but that's a pretty easy fix.
    I didn't touch any of the supplies though, like the gel or the blades, they were overpriced IMO so I didn't buy any of that stuff but I'm happy with the razor itself. It does the job for me, but again I also don't have a face pelt like that and I'm using other soaps. It's a shame that they didn't just come out with a full on soap or a concentrated shaving cream that you can lather up, probably would've been miles beyond the gel.

    So I got my King C Gillette Razor from Walmart. I had about 4 days of growth. My skin is a bit sensitive as well and hair super course. I used regular soap the first two weeks then moved on to my Mama Bears Drakkar Shaving Soap thereafter. I think the gel is mostly for daily usage. But still prefer my preferred soap. The razor is mild but that was a lot of growth bro (cringed for ya dude). I do love my Amazon Gillette Heritage (dare I say) better though. I plan on getting a classic Gillette TTO from you later. Thank you for the video dude!

    The razor has some large dimples. Great for beard growth like yours. I use a Titan 1918 which is an aggresive razor with large dimples on the gaurd. It mowed down the beard really well. But I only use it when I have a week+ of growth. That said... I finish with a mild razor with a smoother guard. Like the Espresso or maybe even a mid aggression like parker 65r.
