- Scott L. Christensen must paint - it is core to his very being. His keen eye and probing curiosity of nature reveal a deep love of not just being outdoors - but, rather, immersed in it with all senses engaged. His response to the landscape is visceral. He wants the viewer to feel a deep emotional connection with the landscape. The viewer is not a mere passing observer of a Christensen painting, but is also a participant in the scene - curious, seeking answers to their own internal questions.
Nature's beauty presents a cacophony of options. This excites Scott - he looks forward to the process of problem-solving and experimentation that long precedes making the first mark of a painting. Outdoor painting is just the beginning of the process. Developing ideas is fundamental to Scott's approach. Through this process of ideation, Scott seeks to find the key of a painting just as a composer decides the key of a song. It's a process that Scott Christensen appropriately likens to Managing Chaos.

Love Scott's work. He's helped me so much.
Almost finished listening. A lot to consider, but overall I’m greatly encouraged. I’ve painted over some of my best work and thought, why? I ruined them. Hearing that Scott has done this too made me feel a little better about it.

I played rugby till I was 43 and miss it but I get the sporting critique and camoraderie bit too.
As an artist myself , one can let the natural process isolate you too much.
Thats why I enjoy these podcasts while I'm knee deep in a painting or sculptude.

Great interview Carl. Looking forward to seeing the Adventure of Painting site develop. I also placed an order for the book written by William Reese. Always looking to increase my wisdom, understanding, and my knowledge.
Painters search for the musical balance of colors, composition, frame, Space, etc, when musicians paint pictures with notes, rythms, etc.
Rick Wakeman explained that really well. When he plays, he sees a picture, a painting, and he sees himself painting it, creating it, and from imaginining his painting, he hears one or two seconds in advance the music what he will play next.
That strange phenomenon interested him a lot.
I appreciate the Rick Wakeman reference and his experience… he is one of my favorites.
I loved this interview. Very very nice and you do very well as an interviewer. My only gripe would be not to judge those of us who don't love to read. There are millions upon millions of hours of documentaries and audio lessons out there that many of us consume voraciously. Why? Because we're curious.

I appreciate your channel. You can never learn to much about how to create art. For me rules do not work but I can rely on my instincts. We all have different instincts (or perceptions) so I try to use my instincts. Makes us all unique.

I found that interesting. I struggle most with the mid tones and find that my range of values is too extreme on either end. I may lose the unity of the whole that way. It could be that small studies could help that instead of going bang into the desired end work. Hmmm. The notion of painting the middle and working out the sky after makes sense.

Great conversation! I think the "Golden Ratio" has a great deal of validity and the rule of thirds, when creating a good composition! I wish could have caught this live.
You are right… there is much value in rule of thirds. I didn’t mean to imply there is no value in them. I do believe there’s much more to design and composition than the rule of thirds. It’s a great guide, but we don’t need to be limited by it. Thank you so much for watching!
PS: I love the group "The Civil Wars", unfortunately they broke up to pursue separate careers. Good as a duet, not sure how they would be as separate vocals though.
Bach I understand that mathematicians like, I am not a mathematician but if they had drawn pictures of the mathematics I might have done better. I did the Famous Artists coarse at 14 they told me to stick to my pen and ink it was my forte, they were not discussing color values. Years later I studied with Sergei Bongart and he taught me how to see color and values by having me paint in black and white until I until I understood value. You Do Some great pictures Scott!

I was disappointed to hear you say that you find people who don't read don't have a sense of curiousity. I listen to - watch your podcasts because I am curious. Google and youtube and podcasts have grown because people are curious. When I watch/listen to something, it is because I am doing something that does not engage my mind much so my mind can pick up info from what I see/hear.
