Holy crap, she is so good and so fast! So cool to see how she bravely starts just painting the highlights over the dark background and the face comes to life immediately. No sketching or measuring. Each brushstroke is deliberate, has meaning, and helps to define the shape of a volume, very efficient.

I will watch this again because I was thrown off track by comments about instructors. So much the same old story. I was never propositioned in art school but as a fine arts major there were other humiliations. I was called arrogant and insolent and lacking humility because I asked for a change from a teacher I disliked to an extra drawing course with a live model. So it went fifty years ago.
So, once my recollections disappeared I was able to enjoy this very much. Thank you Titus. Watching you paint is an honor. Beautiful portrait.

I watched this and the one with Rob and I loved it. When we are in art school there is such a feeling of community when we are painting in the studio with fellow student, and sometimes if we are lucky we share studio spaces after. I really miss painting in a studio building with other artists that I could talk to or even watch them work. These videos, especially this one with Suzan gave me that feeling again. Suzan's experience with the instructor is a common one. I am in Canada and we saw this happen quite often. With Instructors, or Gallery owners and even patrons of art who felt like they could buy us. I know it happens much more for women, but sometimes the young men were also approached in this manner. Hope to see a few more of these artists painting artists! Thank you Titus. Oh! I meant to say I thought you really captured Suzan very well. Her personality was in that painting. Her portrait of you also captured something special in your expression. The hair was a little "non-vegetarian, meat BBQ" 😃 but there was that look that is yours!!!

First, I really enjoy the pressure free conversation you two are having, despite her misanthropy and how you virtually kicked in her studio door. To hear two artists casually tell it like it is while working.

Most wannabes think AI can generate good art for them. It's the difference between a real artist and a wannabe. The real artist has all the skills of painting and uses AI as a tool for enhancement, and not the foundation of their painting. As we can all see Susan here is a very much accomplished artist, having the capacity to paint a person straight then and there from life. It implies that Susan has been through the process of fine arts, learnt it and practised it to perfection, the nuances of light and shadow, the nooks and crannies of a human face, the paints and of course, the idea of presentation. Most wannabes will buy some art supplies, open a channel on social media, and do a gibberish of an attempt to paint something, fail horribly and call it abstract art. They talk a lot, a lot about emotions, their personal stories, struggles and whatnot. They might be successful in getting a ton of likes and comments, and maybe even earn in that process from monetisation, but they fail to make as an artist and their paintings are not taken seriously by any critique or art galleries.

It was a true delight to see both of your paintings! Both were very unique. I admire the technique of pushing one’s imagination in art, obviously that is why knowledge of a variety of media helps in other areas. Experiences can shape our response but look at despite the despicable situation that occurred how both of you flourished! If it isn’t outright disrespect of another’s craft it’s downright sexual harassment. I always observed the difference working in the medical field how men treat women or just topics that have no business being discussed when dealing with other people’s lives and then on top of dealing with outrageous perversion. Yes some doctors and nurses do scare emotionally their colleagues and patients. I was abused by a colleague when physically ill in the hospital and if that occurs, call an outside lawyer first and do not deal with whatever institution it may be. Medical and nursing schools warn how everyone can be coerced into ruining the reputation of an innocent person. They cover it up then try to prevent one from getting their records and make ridiculous accusations and pull in other useless “professionals” who engage in the same practices to try to shut up the innocent. Please do not leave any loved one alone in any medical setting including overnight. This doesn’t even cover tempers of surgeons who throw body fluids at nurses and have been physically assaulted. Please forgive me for my rant but I witnessed all these things including ones purposefully trying to snuff out the lives of ones who are defenseless. The illness of this world is of the heart and what one feeds their mind on. No laws can change people’s hearts. I feel for both of you and thank you for your facial renditions as I thoroughly enjoy it likewise and always will to the extent I can physically hold a brush and have enough vision to do so. It was very emotionally moving. Thank you!😊

Really enjoyed this segment so much. The interpretations of each other in these portraits was wonderful and skillful. Of course being an 80 yr young artist, I related to the recounting of her negative experiences-I have encountered many “jerks” in my long life: instructors, attorneys and even physicians and had to, in my earlier years, deal with it. Things never really change. Regarding art school-I had a mixed experience and noticed many instructors were more interested in you painting, etc. in their style and even as you became more senior at school, you were not encouraged in pursuing your own style. I still work in my own way but selling art here in the Pacific NW of the States is extremely difficult. People here generally do not support artists. Keep up the great work you are doing with these interesting portrait exchanges; they are so enjoyable.

Suzan S is a wonderful and marvellous artist. I love her work; the girls in c. 19th dress are stunning and two others; how fortunate are we to see this fabulous artwork. I enjoyed Suzan's witty irony and repartee. Titus is great although more serious. Loved her painting of Titus, the colour pallette, broad strokes and pallette knife techniques. Not quite so sure of the portrait of Suzan; I couldn't get past the shadow blobs under and on the right side of her nose or the muddy purple shadow on the left side of her face. What I thought remarkable as well is that the portrait of Titus's head and hair is huge and Suzan's portrait tiny...interesting. Thank you both for sharing such fascinating conversations of the life of two artists. ❤❤❤ Awful to hear of that gallery owner brute you were subjected to in your early 20's, it makes me feel sick. ❤❤❤

There is beauty in every face. It takes an artist sometimes to uncover it, along with the personality behind the face and get it up on the canvas. A portrait, to me, is simply a portrayal...the essence of that individual. Maybe thats why the subject is not always happy with the portrait because it only scratches the surface of who the person really is on the inside. I approach painting much the same as i do in life. I realize its a very amateur and naive approach but i look for the beauty in the face i paint...just like i look for the beauty in the people i know or happen to meet.

I'm a bit like Susan, I like staying in my studio alone while painting. I'm not anti-social at all. I can talk for hrs over tea. I don't care to discuss my work or others with their work. I like discussing art itself as just art not techniques, more so emotions.
I agree with Susan's idea of using AI as a tool for generating ideas. It is still your personal art, makes no difference where ideas come from.
I think the internet has made it more possible for artist to make a good living while not having to deal with the oligarchs of the art world. Before it was like gallery or starve. So much can be said about social media's ability not dealing with middlemen and promotors taking profits from folks hard work in almost everything people do.

I can see this coldness/ stand off ish towards people in her work, in my opinion. The model is not the point of her painting. It is the narrative of the her story. The model is the vehicle she uses to tell her story.
I would need to see more of her work. I would also like to know if she is “ copying “ an A.I image to paint or is she using them as reference to express her ideas.

AI will be the end of art. Suzan is making hay while the sun shines. As Maria says in your other session, composition, backgrounds for portraits is the hardest thing. In Suzan's previous portraits the background is clearly drawing a blank in her mind. But the heads were beautifully painted, interesting individuals. Now she paints Barbie in nightlife.

She is technically good but she does not catch the soul of titus so her AI does seem to work for her. Titus gets the essence of her more. I really dont think this lady has an artist's temparent. Her painting of him does not capture his essence but as she says she paints people but is not interested in them. Perhaps this is the real reason she had no luck with the galleries. If we stop trying to capture the essence of a person we might as well take a photograph. Sadly the world is becoming narcissistic without knowing what this means and we are getting paintings from them. All technical but lacking soul. Titus got the essence of this woman. She is working I feel on her own conflict she has as a female. Beautiful interview and glad to know that there is art out there more than online.

I agree. She's a proficient illustrator, rendering people quickly is a major skill. But pre-AI her heads (of real, interesting individuals) were lost in white space and weird flat graphics. Now AI gives her Barbie in a Toulouse Lautrec night scene.

It surprises me that, even as an artist, you cannot except an honest portrait of your self? You clearly think that you are depicted as fat barbeque eating suburbanite? Suzanexcepts your portrait of her as being serious, but also correct. I have painted mini portraits and almost universally, the subject does not really like them picture but those who know that person think it is accurate . apparently, none of us are completely comfortable with what our resting face looks like.

Her portrait looks good but his face looks fat. I took screen shots and I'll paint both.

...unfortunately, the results are disappointing: the portraits are chalky and rather lifeless; the focus was on the resemblance, rather than painterly qualities...they have qualities, without question, but not to the degree to which a video should me made...
