I'm calm, but my smart, attentive dog knows my actions that mean I'm leaving. I've been trying to change up my leaving behaviors and sometimes do the leaving prep but not leave. My GSD was an adult rescue. When I had to board her for a funeral trip, she ripped a hole in the chain link gate at the kennel. In a crate, she's like a Marvel villain escaping by dismantling the crate.
Start leaving the house for a short time, 3 min, 5 min, 10 min. Provide chewing toys, frozen kongs full of paté, beef knee bones, etc. Get your dog tired before leaving and get a very good crate, the bigger, the better, There's an excellent book to help you. If I remember the title, I'll edit the comment. The sooner you start tackling the problem,the better. It can get worse. My GSD got separation anxiety and I was able to help her. She could stay at home for hours with no trouble at all. It takes time and commitment, but you can end up having a calm dog. Sometimes depending on how serious the anxiety is, your dog might need medication, but that is up to your vet. Record the dog when you leave it alone at home, those recordings can help your vet to evaluate if medication could be a good tool to start tackling the problem.
Not the dog is smart, but you are to soft. The dog knows that and starter to train you. Dogs are animals who need leaders. When you don't lead he will do it for you.
Yup n never had a problem w separation anxiety I’m worried if this puppy will develop it bc i take her everywhere but she’s crate trained n doesn’t mind when I go to work. It’s when I go on vacation this summer that I’ll know
it is. Honestly, we should look at ourselves more. People get dogs, expecting that total devotion, then go out and leave the dog all day with nothing much to do, alone.
@@elinannestad5320 I know what you mean. I pretty much take my dog with me everywhere. I work from home most of the time and when not I pay someone to take her so she's not alone. I know it would be good for her to learn to be alone a little bit though, so we are working our way up to 2-3 hours. I don't feel comfortable with any longer than that. But I can see how that's difficult around a regular 9-5 job. I think I wouldn't get a dog if that was my job situation.
My dog isn't crate trained, but he has a certain spot he goes to when I leave. It's his "lookout", a footstool thats right in front of the window. It's the same routine every time that starts with him going outside and ends about 15 minutes later with the "lookout" command where he goes and stays the whole 2-3 hours I'm away. He only barks if the mail comes... because we all know the mail person is the worst evil in the world.
i am blessed that i don't live alone. everytime anyone leaves the house, someone else takes the dog out of sight and play a bit so that dog is not fixated on the person who is leaving
It’s important also to not make a big deal/fuss of coming back either-especially when they are young and training, also start by leaving and returning for short periods and gradually build up the time. Basically teaching the dog that humans come and go a lot and its really no big deal!
I couldn't agree more with the crate. My great grandparents had this dog, and in the house they had a crate which was left open. Whenever they would leave the dog would settle in the crate. A whole house is too big for a dog when it is vaccant, a little crate makes them feel secure and happy
My dog is calm about it, he knows that I have to go. He's never been crate trained too. I usually give him a hug and he goes back to my bed and chills there
My family always crate-trained their dogs, and when I moved into my new house with my fiance's family I was greeted with an elderly chihuahua with separation anxiety so horrible that he would still be howling for HOURS after the family left, even though he knew there was someone else in the house he couldn't stand when any one of them would leave. I have no clue what to do either as they believe crate training to be cruel, and he isn't exactly willing to change his behaviors no matter what I've tried.
My dogs crate trained themselves pretty much. When I got the crate I just left it open and didn’t even ask them to get in. Pretty soon my lab was taking her naps in there. She got a new brother a couple years ago and when he saw me getting dressed he just got in the crate and she started following him in. When I am ready to leave I shut the crate door. Tell them how good they are and that I love them all in a very calm manner. I rarely if ever have to tell them to get in the crate. They love it and are proud of themselves for doing something they know I’m going to want before I ask.
My dogs are both crate trained. They love each other so much that they pretty much refused to use separate crates. So I had to get a larger one because they are both nearly 80lbs. They want to go into their little cave like clockwork every morning. They do know the difference between weekday and weekend as they don't ask to go in Saturday and Sunday.
Both of my dogs ignore me leaving if I'm carrying my handbag/purse. It obviously means I'm going out. I have a large, secure garden (1.3acres) that the roam in when I'm not home.
My dog was crate trained but the second I left, she was crying and howling bloody murder, scratching at the crate, pulling anything she could into the cage to tear it up. She’d be perfectly fine in the cage if I was home, even if I was in another room. I actually didn’t know she was doing it till I got noise complaints and set up a doggy cam.

I think it depends on the breed. My dog is quiet in her crate and doesn't bark whatsoever, but does whine whenever I get home and taps her feet in excitement because she knows she's being let out until I'm leaving the following day. Covering the crate could alleviate some of that anxiety as there's less visual stimuli for them. I've never covered my dogs crate, but I really should because it'll be a bit more comforting for her.
Our husky is a wonderful companion, but when my wife or I leave the property, she starts howling and whining. That usually goes on for about 15 minutes. Even when one of us is still at home. I mean she totally obeys staying home. I open the gate to drive through and she calmly sits there and waits until the gate is closed again. But as soon as I'm out of sight she starts her singing performance.
I think a lot of trainers should specify, if you're gonna crate train your pup you should get a fully enclosed like RuffLand kennel, wire crates in my opinion can cause a lot more anxiety making them feel out in the open, my rotti hated wire crates but her fully enclosed RuffLand she goes in and out all day, I can leave her for 8 hours if I absolutely need and trust she'll be fine, worth the investment.
My dog goes in her wire crate when I'm leaving for work and I don't always need to ask her to. I definitely need to get a cover for it so that she has less visual stimuli. She also doesn't get separation anxiety and very rarely barks, but she does whine and tap her feet in excitement whenever I get home. I'd like to get a proper crate that's more enclosed, but it's the cost which is putting me off.
@@_--____--______--___ it's understandable the cost is definitely a pain in the wallet but it's beyond worth, I'm not saying wire crates can't work it's just you'll notice a world of difference with an enclosed proper crate, I cannot recommend RuffLand enough, not too expensive and beyond durable, I seen a picture of a truck that rolled with one in the back and the kennel didn't even dent, you know your dogs safe in that, 100%
@@KYRonDonTongLongSchlong I can't find the prices of those crates, but they're more for sticking in the back of a car/truck. I wouldn't mind a crate with proper "blank" walls where a cover isn't needed. I've seen them in other dog training videos, but can't find any online.
@@_--____--______--___ I got mine discounted for about $340 I think? Somewhere in that realm, they definitely are meant for trucks and travel but they also are perfect for putting in a corner and using as a daily house crate, as far as price per value I honestly don't know a better option.
Just put a blanket over your wired crate. Aslong as your dog associates the crate as a good thing it shouldnt matter what make or shape it is. Lots of praise. Lots of rewarding for going in there. Dont keep them in longer then they need to be.
The crate made my separation dog even worse. He is 100% fine with it any other time..but made him so anxious when I put him in it and left. He does so much better left free (only was left free once he was trustworthy).

Since people couldn't leave home, the dogs got used to people being with them 24-7, so when life went back to normal and people could go out again the dogs would be confused and stressed as to why their owners are leaving. You may also hear the term covid kids, which refers to a child had in the covid lock down, they tend to develope quicker mentally and physically but socially they'll likely struggle, they'll likely also have the separation issues covid dogs have.
Great advice! I have a little chihuahua and he is crate trained. He knows when we get dressed and put our shoes on that its time for his bed. When he is ready for bed he will let us know, i open the gate and he runs for his crate and waits for me to come tuck him in! SpoilT!
I am a stay at home wife(kids are grown) I tell my husband this everyday, just tell her goodbye calmly and walk out the door. He doesn’t grasp why she’s chill with me and hyper with him.🙄
My girlie already had attachment issues when i picked her and her sister up from the litter. They were the last two and the lady needed them to find homes and my Nala was the calmest with me of all the people that had tried to pick her, so she took it as a sign that i should keep the puppy lol She said of all the litters she's had, Nala was the one that had gotten so attached. At the time, i was renting a room and my roommates also had dogs so no one ever noticed her displaying signs of separation anxiety. They also had a security camera installed, and all the dogs, including nala, were aware when someone left but would go to the backyard to play and i guess that helped with relieving stress. But I've moved since then ive noticed nala get extremely sad when i leave for work. I do what the video here says and just ignore her and leave but i have been told that nala doesn't stop crying for about 10 minutes after i leave and when they try to get her to play or go to the backyard, she's a stubborn little girl and hides in my room, refuses to go play with the other dogs until after shes done crying. Ive tried giving her a treat to distract her but after a few days she would give me sad puppy eyes when she saw a an incoming treat so i stopped doing that. She has an idea of what my work uniform is, so whenever i put my uniform on or something that she thinks resembles my uniform, she begins to give me a sad face but is quiet. For now, what seems to be working is putting her in he backyard when i leave but once she's back inside, she gets stressed when she realizes I'm no there, so im cant do that because now she's refusing to go to the backyard or waits at the door to make sure we dont close it. The previous house i lived at had a doggie door and the current house does not, so I'm guessing thats part of the problem? I know she misses the old house, as she would take me to it during our walks (same neighlborhood) in the beginning. Sometimes we visit them, but i wish she wasnt so sad when i leave. Even if im outside to get something from my car, she gets upset. Their garage is not connected to the house, so we have to step out to do it, and nala gets upset then, as well. She's only pleased if i let her accompany me. Not sure if she's traumatized by leaving her first human mom and then moving houses?
My dog is crate trained, 3.5 months old, never ever greet him after coming back home and never talked to him before leaving the home but still he has seperation anxiety. Now we are trying to give him treats in the crate before we left, still not working. And plus we make sure we open the main door of the house when he is not barking
If I ever get a dog Im going make sure to take him obedience classes, socializing, and crate training. I heard they don’t get into trouble when they’re crate
My biggest tip is to put in a command such as "be right back" or "see you soon" to your dog. and u say it when the dog is in the bed resting and just leave. I also use this command when I leave him in the car. Sometimes my dog wants to join me regardless and joins me at the door but when I say the command he heads to his bed and knows "aah dad is gonna leave and come back soon". And do normal "alone training" starting at 5 minutes-ish and progress. you can make it 30m-1h in a day depending on the dog's age. If it's a 2y/o dog you can progress faster than with a 3-month-old.
Not really much of a command other than a keyword. They are not told to do anything, they however hear a pattern and understand you're going to dissapear
@@justfuckit4815 well my dog had seperation problems and it helped a lot. He was very clingy before it. After we started using that he was way calmer when we left. He is not a excited dog by anymeans, what it does is it gives a dog a job when ur not home. I also live in sweden and we are not allowed by law to have our dogs in crates, exept for transporting.
With me being a Pitt owner, my boy Duke would already know if I was leaving home for a bit just by saying "I'll be back soon, big guy." Or whenever I'd point to his cage and he'd go into his cage and lay down. Pretty smart for a big brutish looking dog ^^ sure whenever he'd catch my scent or hear my voice when I return he howls at me and taps on his cage door since he knew at those times daddy had come home :3
My dog knows if I say 2 mins, holding up 2 fingers (v for victory) I am going out without him. I think he knows I will be back, I often come back with a treat, not always. Normally i get my shoes or coat he get excited, but I say 2 mins he calms down and knows what's happening. I love you videos
If they are adults, I would contact a local trainer. If they are puppies, it's much easier (and he probably has some videos on it). I'd start by feeding them in their crates and putting them in there to nap. Make it a place of calm and reassurance and they will come to love it.
If I say any of these words "bye, key, car, store, work, outside" my dog starts following me around as soon as I start getting ready like combing my hair. Omg. I just start wearing my coat. She wants it off. Sometimes she runs away with my shoe. I don't know how I can help her overcome this anxiety.
I work for a group home. They got a dog about 6 months ago. He was small. I tried.. For months.. To get them to get a proper crate. he was to big for the one that he had. No one listened. Now.. We have a dog that will bark and bark and bark when put in the crate. Considering at night thats where hes supposed to be, it makes things difficult. Right now I can hear his anxious panting. idk how I could help this. I dont know if I even can. The fact that a BORDER COLLIE POODLE mix was given to people who have no idea how to train a dog and no motivation to take the dog out is beyond me. A small yapper would have been a better option -_-
Desensitizing them to having their feet being touched. Give them lots of pets and include touching their paws during this time and reward them with a treat for it so they associate having their feet being touched with good things. Then when it’s time to trim their nails give them a distraction to focus on (like a lick mat). You may only be able to get one of two done at a time but eventually they will realize it’s not something to be fearful of.
I do slate this fella at times about how he hates on the cane corso but that aside this is the one thing I really wish I had done with my male as a pup crate training is very important
OH BOY DO I HAVE A CASE FOR YOU!!! My sisters dog has such bad anxiety when she leaves the house he’s eaten a Steele cage, dead bolts, drywall after drywall. This dog lost 8 teeth chewing through the steel cage.
I put my pup in a crate and go about my day. I used to let him free roam but he kept soiling around the house (even after taking him out for bathroom breaks before i leave). So when i come home zero messes.
I don't say anything and just leave. Never had issues with separation anxiety. Same when it's walk time, I just grab the lead and get going. (As in no baby talk etc.)
Change up your behaviors, get them used to you leaving and coming back so that it's not such a big deal when you do. I always take my dogs for a long walk before I go to work so they're tired and calm. I have to get up an hour early but I do it because I love them and I chose to have them in my life, I have to understand what they need and do it. If i didn't want to do it I shouldn't have got the dogs. I always keep frozen treats or chews for when I leave as well, so they're occupied and won't get bored. It's honestly simple but people refuse to see these simple things. They expect their dog to behave like a human and understand. It like telling a toddler not to play with his food or not to cry when he's hurt. Have realistic expectations and work within those boundaries.
I have this crazy beautiful 10 month old Dobermann, and because I was agoraphobic when I first got him(I only walked him at night when nobody was around), he is incredibly attached to me and if I even leave the room he starts to cry. He is an assistance dog in training, but he wont be trained in time for Uni starting again in September and I’m scared about leaving him alone for 9 hours a day. Any advice beyond crate training? He destroyed his last one, and I’m not sure a crate would do us much good.
My parents' yellow lab can't tolerate any separation. Total velcro dog if there's only one person home. And if anyone goes out front, he stares out the bay window, gets amped. And starts barking nonstop in 3 round bursts. Incredibly high-pitched. He barks like a normal dog when he sees a hawk or rabbit. He's also incredibly scared of thunder. Shakes and scratches at the walls. He tries to crawl into any small spaces he can find. Nothing we do seems to distract him from his single minded freakout mode. Any ideas?
My dog either goes into her crate whenever I give her the command, say her name or she just knows I'm leaving. I'll give her a couple of toys so that she doesn't get too bored, shut the crate, tell her I'm going to work and leave calmly. She's never shown signs of anxiety, very rarely barks, but does whine a little and have the "tippy taps" when I get home from work or shopping. Some breeds are also more prone to anxiety than others.
@@laynecantrell8864 I leave mine in her crate for just under 9 hours a day, 5 days a week and I also leave her in it when I need to go shopping or out somewhere for a couple of hours. My dog doesn't have any issues from being left in the crate whilst I'm out of the house. I have to use the crate because otherwise she'll chew everything out of boredom and no amount of toys have ever helped. She's also in the teenage phase, so leaving her out whenever I'm not home is a big no no.
And what do you do when that doesnt work. If I even take a shower my dog goes off. Putting him out while I get ready to minimize the trigger doesnt work, nor does playing to wear him out in advance or distracting with food. Forget calm energy too. Ive done everything in that effect and it doesnt work. If I dont put him out or allow him in the bathroom with me he will destroy anything with my scent on it. Containment leads to self abuse. Kenneling is not an option either. He is a rescue and terrified of the kennels. The one time I put him in one he freaked so bad he ended up ten feet from his starting point, still in the kennel, and had hurt himself. Since then, it has taken 3 years to get him to even go in a kennel voluntarily, and if anyone moves, he bolts from it to prevent the door closing.
I adopted a 5 yr old 70 lbs pit bull terrier with major separation anxiety. Idk what happened to her the first 4 years of her life but I do know the last year of her life she was with a family that adopted her from the shelter and then abandoned her in a home. Anytime I go upstairs and leave her downstairs she claws at the door, causing damage to the frame. I put her in a temporary collapsible kennel and she just unhooked one of the walls. She will try anything to get to me/ other people because she is scared of being left alone… any tips to help with this? I’ve only had her a few days and I know that we need to build up that trust that I will always come back but I’m trying to save further damage from being done XD Edit: she also isn’t really into toys/bones, honestly don’t know if she’s had one before. She loves treats and that’s how I coax her into her kennel cause she is not kennel trained but those only last so long. I tried giving her a shirt that smelled like me and she wasn’t that interested in it.
My aunt's dog has major separation anxiety. She has to put him in the crate or else he'll run after her. It's funny but a little sad sometimes. Granted he's an old dog though.
I need help!!! Just adopted a 1 yr cavapoo from a elderly lady. I was just reading that breed tents to have anxiety.. and he has really bad separation anxiety.. we are a busy family with jobs and kids in school, sports so we almost never are home. He barks, howl for hrs when left alone. We have a crate, bought him toys and snacks feeders. But the worst is when I get home… his anxiety it’s the worst.. to the point that he gets so excited he almost faint.. almost pass out.. it’s painful seeing him like that. I ignore him but it takes long for him to calm down..
I have an anxious dog, to the point where the vet is recommending euthanasia if the new meds don't have more of an effect soon (switched her from Fluoxetin last year). 😢😢😢😢😢 But she doesn't have separation anxiety. Couldn't care less if we leave.
What if you're leaving when they're asleep and they still howl the house down when you're going out to a place that doesn't allow dogs like work places?
I put relaxing dog music on the TV, or Michael sealey meditations for our sleep. I tell them where I'm going I'm going to the store and the gym I'll be back in a while and then I say goodbye. And then I leave
Why does crate training stop seperation anxiety? My dog doesn't do anything like chewing or causing damage while I'm gone, he barks and howls. Wouldn't he still be able to do that in a crate?
I never crate trained my previous dog and he never had seperation anxiety. For 13 years he was fine. Just adooted a 3 year old dog who is crate trained, and she has really bad seperation anxiety. So I dont believe that part to be true.
I’m crate training him but it seems like right at bed time he starts screaming and howling I make sure he has relieved himself and eaten. I’m just stressing at night because I get noise complaints from the neighbors. He was fine the first week now it’s going on week three and he has started again what do I do now
What about for the dogs that have crate anxiety? Mine is fine in his crate when we're home but as soon as everyone is gone he panics and hurts himself trying to get out. He's only a year and a half and has already broken a couple teeth from biting at the crate to leave.
Give him some toys and leave the radio on. My dog has never broken her teeth whilst chewing at the crate. A crate cover might also help to reduce the anxiety.
Make going in the crate a fun, rewarding thing to do for the dog, vocal praise, treats, short amounts of time spent in there, make sure theyve had a walk every day so theyre tired and dont mind killing a few hours having a sleep in there anyway, if they ate a big meal not too long ago maybe they need a wee, best to start when a puppy

My puppy is like 2 months old? I’m not sure she’s lapping but mostly milk she can’t eat food as yet, if I turn around or I’m not facing her she cries and come to lay on my feet. My dog has nearly the same problem. When I leave the house he will howl/bark for 20-30 mins and then be quiet. I can't work out how to stop it happening.
I think it depends on the breed. My dog is quiet in her crate and doesn't bark whatsoever, but does whine whenever I get home and taps her feet in excitement because she knows she's being let out until I'm leaving the following day.
Covering the crate could alleviate some of that anxiety as there's less visual stimuli for them. I've never covered my dogs crate, but I really should because it'll be a bit more comforting for her.
Did you ever find a solution? Mine does the same thing and my neighbor's have complained. I have to find a way to stop it or rehome him.
The thing if found works best for my dog is giving her a hemp treat and a toy or something to chew on.
Our husky is a wonderful companion, but when my wife or I leave the property, she starts howling and whining. That usually goes on for about 15 minutes. Even when one of us is still at home. I mean she totally obeys staying home. I open the gate to drive through and she calmly sits there and waits until the gate is closed again. But as soon as I'm out of sight she starts her singing performance.
I think a lot of trainers should specify, if you're gonna crate train your pup you should get a fully enclosed like RuffLand kennel, wire crates in my opinion can cause a lot more anxiety making them feel out in the open, my rotti hated wire crates but her fully enclosed RuffLand she goes in and out all day, I can leave her for 8 hours if I absolutely need and trust she'll be fine, worth the investment.
My dog goes in her wire crate when I'm leaving for work and I don't always need to ask her to. I definitely need to get a cover for it so that she has less visual stimuli. She also doesn't get separation anxiety and very rarely barks, but she does whine and tap her feet in excitement whenever I get home.
I'd like to get a proper crate that's more enclosed, but it's the cost which is putting me off.
@@_--____--______--___ it's understandable the cost is definitely a pain in the wallet but it's beyond worth, I'm not saying wire crates can't work it's just you'll notice a world of difference with an enclosed proper crate, I cannot recommend RuffLand enough, not too expensive and beyond durable, I seen a picture of a truck that rolled with one in the back and the kennel didn't even dent, you know your dogs safe in that, 100%
@@KYRonDonTongLongSchlong I can't find the prices of those crates, but they're more for sticking in the back of a car/truck. I wouldn't mind a crate with proper "blank" walls where a cover isn't needed. I've seen them in other dog training videos, but can't find any online.
@@_--____--______--___ I got mine discounted for about $340 I think? Somewhere in that realm, they definitely are meant for trucks and travel but they also are perfect for putting in a corner and using as a daily house crate, as far as price per value I honestly don't know a better option.
Just put a blanket over your wired crate. Aslong as your dog associates the crate as a good thing it shouldnt matter what make or shape it is. Lots of praise. Lots of rewarding for going in there. Dont keep them in longer then they need to be.

The crate made my separation dog even worse. He is 100% fine with it any other time..but made him so anxious when I put him in it and left. He does so much better left free (only was left free once he was trustworthy).

Since people couldn't leave home, the dogs got used to people being with them 24-7, so when life went back to normal and people could go out again the dogs would be confused and stressed as to why their owners are leaving.
You may also hear the term covid kids, which refers to a child had in the covid lock down, they tend to develope quicker mentally and physically but socially they'll likely struggle, they'll likely also have the separation issues covid dogs have.

Great advice! I have a little chihuahua and he is crate trained. He knows when we get dressed and put our shoes on that its time for his bed. When he is ready for bed he will let us know, i open the gate and he runs for his crate and waits for me to come tuck him in! SpoilT!
I am a stay at home wife(kids are grown) I tell my husband this everyday, just tell her goodbye calmly and walk out the door. He doesn’t grasp why she’s chill with me and hyper with him.🙄
My girlie already had attachment issues when i picked her and her sister up from the litter. They were the last two and the lady needed them to find homes and my Nala was the calmest with me of all the people that had tried to pick her, so she took it as a sign that i should keep the puppy lol She said of all the litters she's had, Nala was the one that had gotten so attached.
At the time, i was renting a room and my roommates also had dogs so no one ever noticed her displaying signs of separation anxiety. They also had a security camera installed, and all the dogs, including nala, were aware when someone left but would go to the backyard to play and i guess that helped with relieving stress.
But I've moved since then ive noticed nala get extremely sad when i leave for work. I do what the video here says and just ignore her and leave but i have been told that nala doesn't stop crying for about 10 minutes after i leave and when they try to get her to play or go to the backyard, she's a stubborn little girl and hides in my room, refuses to go play with the other dogs until after shes done crying.
Ive tried giving her a treat to distract her but after a few days she would give me sad puppy eyes when she saw a an incoming treat so i stopped doing that. She has an idea of what my work uniform is, so whenever i put my uniform on or something that she thinks resembles my uniform, she begins to give me a sad face but is quiet.
For now, what seems to be working is putting her in he backyard when i leave but once she's back inside, she gets stressed when she realizes I'm no there, so im cant do that because now she's refusing to go to the backyard or waits at the door to make sure we dont close it.
The previous house i lived at had a doggie door and the current house does not, so I'm guessing thats part of the problem? I know she misses the old house, as she would take me to it during our walks (same neighlborhood) in the beginning. Sometimes we visit them, but i wish she wasnt so sad when i leave. Even if im outside to get something from my car, she gets upset. Their garage is not connected to the house, so we have to step out to do it, and nala gets upset then, as well. She's only pleased if i let her accompany me.
Not sure if she's traumatized by leaving her first human mom and then moving houses?
My dog is crate trained, 3.5 months old, never ever greet him after coming back home and never talked to him before leaving the home but still he has seperation anxiety. Now we are trying to give him treats in the crate before we left, still not working. And plus we make sure we open the main door of the house when he is not barking

My biggest tip is to put in a command such as "be right back" or "see you soon" to your dog. and u say it when the dog is in the bed resting and just leave. I also use this command when I leave him in the car. Sometimes my dog wants to join me regardless and joins me at the door but when I say the command he heads to his bed and knows "aah dad is gonna leave and come back soon". And do normal "alone training" starting at 5 minutes-ish and progress. you can make it 30m-1h in a day depending on the dog's age. If it's a 2y/o dog you can progress faster than with a 3-month-old.
Not really much of a command other than a keyword. They are not told to do anything, they however hear a pattern and understand you're going to dissapear
@@justfuckit4815 well my dog had seperation problems and it helped a lot. He was very clingy before it. After we started using that he was way calmer when we left. He is not a excited dog by anymeans, what it does is it gives a dog a job when ur not home. I also live in sweden and we are not allowed by law to have our dogs in crates, exept for transporting.

With me being a Pitt owner, my boy Duke would already know if I was leaving home for a bit just by saying "I'll be back soon, big guy." Or whenever I'd point to his cage and he'd go into his cage and lay down. Pretty smart for a big brutish looking dog ^^ sure whenever he'd catch my scent or hear my voice when I return he howls at me and taps on his cage door since he knew at those times daddy had come home :3

My dog knows if I say 2 mins, holding up 2 fingers (v for victory) I am going out without him. I think he knows I will be back, I often come back with a treat, not always. Normally i get my shoes or coat he get excited, but I say 2 mins he calms down and knows what's happening. I love you videos

How do you crate train your dog?
If they are adults, I would contact a local trainer. If they are puppies, it's much easier (and he probably has some videos on it). I'd start by feeding them in their crates and putting them in there to nap. Make it a place of calm and reassurance and they will come to love it.
If I say any of these words "bye, key, car, store, work, outside" my dog starts following me around as soon as I start getting ready like combing my hair. Omg. I just start wearing my coat. She wants it off. Sometimes she runs away with my shoe. I don't know how I can help her overcome this anxiety.

I work for a group home. They got a dog about 6 months ago. He was small. I tried.. For months.. To get them to get a proper crate. he was to big for the one that he had. No one listened. Now.. We have a dog that will bark and bark and bark when put in the crate. Considering at night thats where hes supposed to be, it makes things difficult. Right now I can hear his anxious panting. idk how I could help this. I dont know if I even can. The fact that a BORDER COLLIE POODLE mix was given to people who have no idea how to train a dog and no motivation to take the dog out is beyond me. A small yapper would have been a better option -_-

Desensitizing them to having their feet being touched. Give them lots of pets and include touching their paws during this time and reward them with a treat for it so they associate having their feet being touched with good things. Then when it’s time to trim their nails give them a distraction to focus on (like a lick mat). You may only be able to get one of two done at a time but eventually they will realize it’s not something to be fearful of.

OH BOY DO I HAVE A CASE FOR YOU!!! My sisters dog has such bad anxiety when she leaves the house he’s eaten a Steele cage, dead bolts, drywall after drywall. This dog lost 8 teeth chewing through the steel cage.
I put my pup in a crate and go about my day. I used to let him free roam but he kept soiling around the house (even after taking him out for bathroom breaks before i leave). So when i come home zero messes.
I don't say anything and just leave. Never had issues with separation anxiety. Same when it's walk time, I just grab the lead and get going. (As in no baby talk etc.)
Change up your behaviors, get them used to you leaving and coming back so that it's not such a big deal when you do. I always take my dogs for a long walk before I go to work so they're tired and calm. I have to get up an hour early but I do it because I love them and I chose to have them in my life, I have to understand what they need and do it. If i didn't want to do it I shouldn't have got the dogs. I always keep frozen treats or chews for when I leave as well, so they're occupied and won't get bored. It's honestly simple but people refuse to see these simple things. They expect their dog to behave like a human and understand. It like telling a toddler not to play with his food or not to cry when he's hurt. Have realistic expectations and work within those boundaries.
I have this crazy beautiful 10 month old Dobermann, and because I was agoraphobic when I first got him(I only walked him at night when nobody was around), he is incredibly attached to me and if I even leave the room he starts to cry. He is an assistance dog in training, but he wont be trained in time for Uni starting again in September and I’m scared about leaving him alone for 9 hours a day. Any advice beyond crate training? He destroyed his last one, and I’m not sure a crate would do us much good.

My parents' yellow lab can't tolerate any separation. Total velcro dog if there's only one person home. And if anyone goes out front, he stares out the bay window, gets amped. And starts barking nonstop in 3 round bursts. Incredibly high-pitched. He barks like a normal dog when he sees a hawk or rabbit.
He's also incredibly scared of thunder. Shakes and scratches at the walls. He tries to crawl into any small spaces he can find. Nothing we do seems to distract him from his single minded freakout mode.
Any ideas?
My dog either goes into her crate whenever I give her the command, say her name or she just knows I'm leaving. I'll give her a couple of toys so that she doesn't get too bored, shut the crate, tell her I'm going to work and leave calmly. She's never shown signs of anxiety, very rarely barks, but does whine a little and have the "tippy taps" when I get home from work or shopping. Some breeds are also more prone to anxiety than others.

@@laynecantrell8864 I leave mine in her crate for just under 9 hours a day, 5 days a week and I also leave her in it when I need to go shopping or out somewhere for a couple of hours.
My dog doesn't have any issues from being left in the crate whilst I'm out of the house. I have to use the crate because otherwise she'll chew everything out of boredom and no amount of toys have ever helped. She's also in the teenage phase, so leaving her out whenever I'm not home is a big no no.
And what do you do when that doesnt work. If I even take a shower my dog goes off. Putting him out while I get ready to minimize the trigger doesnt work, nor does playing to wear him out in advance or distracting with food. Forget calm energy too. Ive done everything in that effect and it doesnt work. If I dont put him out or allow him in the bathroom with me he will destroy anything with my scent on it. Containment leads to self abuse. Kenneling is not an option either. He is a rescue and terrified of the kennels. The one time I put him in one he freaked so bad he ended up ten feet from his starting point, still in the kennel, and had hurt himself. Since then, it has taken 3 years to get him to even go in a kennel voluntarily, and if anyone moves, he bolts from it to prevent the door closing.
I adopted a 5 yr old 70 lbs pit bull terrier with major separation anxiety. Idk what happened to her the first 4 years of her life but I do know the last year of her life she was with a family that adopted her from the shelter and then abandoned her in a home. Anytime I go upstairs and leave her downstairs she claws at the door, causing damage to the frame. I put her in a temporary collapsible kennel and she just unhooked one of the walls. She will try anything to get to me/ other people because she is scared of being left alone… any tips to help with this? I’ve only had her a few days and I know that we need to build up that trust that I will always come back but I’m trying to save further damage from being done XD
Edit: she also isn’t really into toys/bones, honestly don’t know if she’s had one before. She loves treats and that’s how I coax her into her kennel cause she is not kennel trained but those only last so long. I tried giving her a shirt that smelled like me and she wasn’t that interested in it.
My aunt's dog has major separation anxiety. She has to put him in the crate or else he'll run after her. It's funny but a little sad sometimes. Granted he's an old dog though.
I need help!!! Just adopted a 1 yr cavapoo from a elderly lady. I was just reading that breed tents to have anxiety.. and he has really bad separation anxiety.. we are a busy family with jobs and kids in school, sports so we almost never are home. He barks, howl for hrs when left alone. We have a crate, bought him toys and snacks feeders. But the worst is when I get home… his anxiety it’s the worst.. to the point that he gets so excited he almost faint.. almost pass out.. it’s painful seeing him like that. I ignore him but it takes long for him to calm down..
I have an anxious dog, to the point where the vet is recommending euthanasia if the new meds don't have more of an effect soon (switched her from Fluoxetin last year). 😢😢😢😢😢 But she doesn't have separation anxiety. Couldn't care less if we leave.

I put relaxing dog music on the TV, or Michael sealey meditations for our sleep. I tell them where I'm going I'm going to the store and the gym I'll be back in a while and then I say goodbye. And then I leave

I never crate trained my previous dog and he never had seperation anxiety. For 13 years he was fine. Just adooted a 3 year old dog who is crate trained, and she has really bad seperation anxiety. So I dont believe that part to be true.

What about for the dogs that have crate anxiety? Mine is fine in his crate when we're home but as soon as everyone is gone he panics and hurts himself trying to get out. He's only a year and a half and has already broken a couple teeth from biting at the crate to leave.
Give him some toys and leave the radio on. My dog has never broken her teeth whilst chewing at the crate. A crate cover might also help to reduce the anxiety.
Make going in the crate a fun, rewarding thing to do for the dog, vocal praise, treats, short amounts of time spent in there, make sure theyve had a walk every day so theyre tired and dont mind killing a few hours having a sleep in there anyway, if they ate a big meal not too long ago maybe they need a wee, best to start when a puppy
