  • Rhtyhm games have always been one of my favorite genre of games, but with so many different ones out there, what really is the best one? What makes certain ones bad, and what makes the good ones great? Well, I'm not really qualified to answer but I tried anyway.

    That's my level! I made that!
    Thats turn the lights off! Someone played the level I made!!!!
    I'm deeply sorry for the fact that its ever so slightly put of sync and for my attempt at being clever with the ending.

    On your note of being able to play blindfolded, after watching cjya and Jaiden do a blindfolded run of Rhythm Heaven, I did a blindfolded run of RD, and I don't even have the gold button yet. After playing RD a number of times through, learning how to play the whole game blindfolded is extremely accessible! If anyone wants to casually do a blindfolded run of a game, this game is probably the first game to try it with!

    I think rhythm doctor along with rhythm heaven might be the closest to 'genuine' rhythm games that we'll ever get. The 'rhythm' mechanics are so good, you could even beat some levels with your eyes closed. I think the problem with other games is that it relies too much on visual cues...

    I had the pleasure of working with some of the main developers that made Rhythm Doctor and they’re all super talented both in technical and creative aspects. The best part about Rhythm Doctor for me is that it was made by people from my own country (Peru), where making videogames for a living was not even conceivable when I was a kid. But now I can actually aspire to make something as good as Rhythm Doctor without having to leave my country to “search for better opportunities”.
    I’m really glad it’s receiving so much love, it doesn’t deserve anything less. Indie games can truly save the industry, craftsmanship and artistry of videogames.

    I have no idea why so many rhythm games follow the vocal melody rather than the beat. It’s so hard to get into a groove and I’m constantly missing notes cos I’m trying to follow the beat and not the melody. So damn stupid

    The U in OSU! is silent because it is Japanese. It's a very manly and rough way of saying "HEY". Accosiated with delinquents and martial artists.
    And its not pronounced Oh-S either heh. It's more like Oz (like in the the wizard of oz)! The name stems from the fact that OSU! is a simulator of the games series "Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan!" (HEY! FIGHT! CHEER SQUAD!") for the Nintendo DS (also got a US entry in the series named Elite Beat Agents).

    Rhythm doctor es un juego de ritmo pero ademas es muy variado ya que tiene historia, canciones y melodias, jefes y muchos tipo de ritmo.
    Ademas algunos niveles los mesclan para confundir más.

    First off, this is a hidden gem of a video, I love it, and only partly because it has the most correct opinion I've ever seen. But also, I have somewhere I can vent my niche opinion and people will understand!
    I hate how almost all rhythm games get their difficulty from being fast and by requiring dexterity, instead of focusing on the actual rhythm. Sure, using speed is fine, but if it's only speed, that's so boring, especially when it's virtually the entire genre. I should be losing points due to my inability to understand the rhythm of the song, not due to my inability to move my fingers fast enough. As an example, if you've played A Dance of Fire and Ice, I greatly prefer Options to levels like One Forgotten Night or EMOMOMO. Rhythm Doctor absolutely nails it on this point, giving you some messed up beat and telling you to figure it out. I don't care how fast you can read notes or press buttons, you're not getting through Unsustainable Inconsolable without understanding the rhythm of the song. If there's any other games out there where the focus is on actual rhythm like Rhythm Doctor does, please tell me, I want more of this stuff.

    You seem to be playing lower star maps with osu which are quite hard to time to a song as it is because it still has to be easy enough for a newer play to play it and most songs timings are more complex than they can handle so they are more likely to follow vocals, but get up to higher rated maps most of the maps are timed to the beat with very occasional timing to the vocals or some other sound, so i would agree with you when your playing lower star maps a lot of the time but i disagree when it comes to a higher level of osu.

    • @KramicusApple
      @KramicusApple  Před 6 měsíci

      Yes, you're right that most of the time I was playing lower star maps. And yes, just like how I feel with Beat Saber, the lower the difficulty, the less "rhythm game" it feels. But my main argument I stated with OSU! isn't that it feels off-time, it's that it doesn't *need* time. You can play just as well with no music as you can with music, because the beats are never technically linked to the song, just as the easier levels prove. The rhythm and timing plays less of a role than it should for a rhythm game, which is why I feel it's not as good as something like Rhythm Doctor, which actively requires it, all the time. This, among other reasons, is why I don't care for OSU! as much as other games in the genre. Again, OSU! isn't a bad game, I just don't play it as much as other rhythm games.

    • @Long-Horse
      @Long-Horse Před 6 měsíci

      @KramicusApple You cannot play higher star maps without music its very difficult even for players that have been playing for many years, as you have to follow the rhythm, haha.
      The skill of aiming isn't conventional in rhythm and timing games but that's what's so fun about osu for us is that it's your timing and your speed of aiming skill plus many others.

  • @kiro2278
    @kiro2278 Před 6 měsíci

    Althought I agree that RD is (one of the if not the) best rhythm game, I don't agree with some of your arguments as to why. A rhythm game should not only rely on the core beat of the game, that is a very narrow definition of the genre that would exclude >99% of all rhythm games. Melody is part of a song just as much as its beat, so excluding it from rhythm games would ignore half the song. Main issue here is rather that many rhythm games don't seem to follow a persistent pattern, and osu! definitely is the best example where it follows the melody only to switch to following the lyrics in the same map.
    On a side note: osu!std definitely is the worst gamemode in osu!. As a taiko player myself I can definitely say the beat reliability is way better and your timing accuracy actually matters.
    For me, the thing that sets RD apart from other rhythm games is its complexity. Whereas most games only scale up the speed and density of the notes, RD increases the complexity of the beats by overlaying several kind of beats on top of each other, for example SVT beats paired with normal beats paired with swing beats. Speed and mechanics are never the problem, only whether or not you can keep track of them all.
    All in all, solid video! Can't believe something this well made only has 3k views. Keep up the good work, mate!

    I admire on your belief, but Rhythm Doctor for just doesn't cut it. It's too simple and mechanically constrained, which reminds me of a lot of standard tapping rhythm game. Even if its tapping is its peak, there's simply no flow/momentum in the gameplay itself.
    In contrast, osu!'s lack of immedate appeal was not because it's an aimlab simulaion but rather the sheer high skill floor new players must overcome to enjoy in the first place

      Mechanically constrained??? there are literally tutorials before every level just to introduce you to the new mechanics.

    • @Exshem
      @Exshem Před 6 měsíci

      @@Merc1mek When I mean mechanically constrained, I'm speaking with the overall gameplay. Sure, there are variations, but its essence doesn't make it any more unique. Tbh it functions like Geometry Dash but without a freeflow and only the strict timing, and perhaps ADOFAI to some extent. Quite a one dimensional gameplay imo.
      Also him ranting on Guitar Hero and osu being "focused" on the melody more than its rhythm doesn't make it any less of a rhythm game.

    • @Michojo
      @Michojo Před 6 měsíci

      What i assume he talks about is a strict rhythm game (only depend on rhythm, no subgenre)... By that definition, he's probably correct. But if you're point talking bout rhythm games in general, yeah you could argue for anything really and it will be valid, for example Geometry dash (Rhythm-platformer). I feel like osu! should be called Rhythm-FPS game, like man, i hit correctly, but i aim all wrong hahahaha.

    • @Michojo
      @Michojo Před 6 měsíci

      Its rare to see pure rhythm game lately, and while Osu! is an amazing rhythm game (only better than Rhythm doctor, cuz of what you said, skill ceiling motivates a lot of peeps), its not a pure rhythm game.
