    Something I learned from the model tank community, sorta like using the tape masking but it is blobbier:
    1. Spray your base color and wait to dry
    2. Get a bunch of silly putty and make it into random blob shapes and stick it on the gun
    3. Spray your second color
    4. Peel all the silly putty off and end up with a nice color
    If you want to do 3 colors, don't pull all the putty off, and spray a third layer.

      Cheap paint is a perfect choice. You're gonna paint the thing and repaint it again for the next mission. As he mentioned, it will chip, age and wear off giving it a distressed look and further breaking up the silhouette. Why waste money on expensive paint when it's a disposable finish, NOT a permanent coloration?

    Pro tip: When using rattlecan spray paint, hold it about 8 inches away from the gun and “dust” it with light coats. If not the paint underneath will NOT completely dry and it will give the firearm a sticky tacky feel.

    • @anordinarygunguy5955
      @anordinarygunguy5955 Před 2 lety +33

      @@squidy4082 it still won’t ever cure properly and you will always have a tacky feel if you coat it too thick at one time. You would have to remove all paint and restart if you wanted to end with a smooth finish. Always use a clear coat of some kind afterwards to seal the deal and give the paint job more durability. The method I use is, 1.) strip the gun down completely. 2.) use a degreaser to wipe the gun parts down really well. 3.) Sprits the gun with your first coat very lightly and far away. Almost like a dusting. 4.) use a heat gun on the recently sprayed area to almost force a quick curing. 5.) once painted parts feel dry to the touch, you can then sprits on your second coat and so on. When you get done, clear coat it, heat gun it, then it will feel and be a smooth paint job that feels factory to the touch.

    Most Rustoleum or Krylon spray paint has drying agents in them to help them dry faster and there’s a specific timeline that you have to apply the 2nd coat by or you have to wait as long as a week to apply additional coats and not get cracking or fisheyes in the paint. If you spray after the recommended time the drying agents from the different coats can react with the other and mess up a perfect looking paint job. Make sure to follow the instructions on the can and you shouldn’t have any problems. I’ve found that Rustoleum is the worst if you don’t paint additional coats within the timeframe listed on the can. Additional coats must be sprayed within an hour or you have to wait 7 days before applying another coat or the paint will most likely crack and bubble. Trust me, I’m speaking from experience and it wasn’t a fun thing to experience when you had a perfect paint job before deciding to add another coat.

    • @DRAWinLINES
      @DRAWinLINES Před 3 lety +59

      @@matthewcooksey5411 Step one is to always read the directions for the paint you will use. With spray paint it will be on the back of the can (seems fucking obvious, but few people ever pay any attention to manufacturer instructions on rattle cans).
      Make sure to prep the surface. On my AR I lightly scuffed all painted surfaces with 1500 grit sandpaper. This can be tough because you do not want to sand through the factory finish because the silicates found in sand paper can imbed themselves into metals such as aluminum and cause corrosion.
      Next should be a degreaser. Clean it well with a solid degreaser and only handle the part with gloves or shop towels from this point forward. This will prevent what's called "fish eyes" in your paint as well as facilitate proper adhesion. You know why people's painted guns wear so drastically with use? It's because their prep work sucks.
      When painting, the nozzle should be consistently 6-8 inches from the surface. Spray with even strokes, starting off of the leading edge of the surface to be painted and ending off the trailing edge. CONSISTENT MOVEMENT IS KEY. Never hold the can in one place even for a "quick tap of the trigger" to hit that spot you missed. This will cause runs and blotting. Just be more thorough on your next coat.
      First coat of paint should reach about 10% opacity. This essentially means a very light "dusting" of paint. Wait for paint to cure (this could take up to a couple of hours). REMOVE THE NOZZLE FROM THE PAINT CAN AND CLEAN IT!!!!! (yes, after EVERY coat. Paint thinner is cheap. Pour some into a plastic cup and just drop the nozzle into it while your coats cure.)
      Second coat should reach NO MORE than 50% opacity (preferably 25%, the more coats it takes to reach a finished product, the better the finished product). This means that the original factory finish should still be clearly visible. Once again you wait for cure. (This takes huge patience with all the excitement.)
      Third coat 75%
      Final coat 100%
      Remember to not let your finger overhang the nozzle. This will ruin your spray pattern and cause paint blots on your surface.
      If you're feeling lucky and want a perfectly smooth finish, you can do one more coat and apply it slightly thicker. This takes skill and I don't recommend it to anyone not doing a lot of painting in their free time. A thicker final coat will cause the paint to "run" in the slightest meaning of the word and become extremely smooth once it settles. This step can easily ruin all your hard work.
      Try your best to refrain from the "sanding in between coats" method. Without practice it can be infuriating.
      I learned to paint on aircraft and yes, I've used rattle cans on aircraft. Make a day out of it. I set up camp chairs in my garage, play music, and drink beer all day if I'm painting something I would like to be proud of. Just seriously take your time and try not to loose patience. And oh ya, some guys will tell you "just put it in the oven at 300° until it stops smelling like paint. Then you don't have to wait the whole curing time..." Those guys are retards. It can take up to a week for your project to rightfully cure. IT JUST TAKES TIME.

    I would add, use colors that broadly represent your Area of Operations, and use them with relatively sharp lines between the colors, in irregular shapes... you WANT CONTRAST between the colors, as that is what will break up the outline of the weapon. Too many painted weapons I have seen use blurred lines, and too small of patches of color, with little to no contrast of colors, this lends itself to a weapon that still is easily identifiable as a weapon from any distance, as the colors and patterns appear as ONE from any distance.

      Having all those guns are useless if it's not being put to use at the Southern US border, having CZcams subscribers to look at your guns collecting dust in your safe doesn't do much in the long run.

      @Okinawa Nah if you're going to say that, then donate all your money to the southern border. because it's just collecting dust in your bank account
