  • China is expanding its investment in the Western Hemisphere with a $3.6 million port in Peru. The port will transform the Pacific while strengthening China’s ties with South America. NBC News’ Keir Simmons has exclusive access inside the massive construction site.

    China builds infrastructure (roads, railroads, ports, airports, etc.,) all over the world which benefits the people in those countries, the US on the other hand builds bases for its air force and navy, not much else which doesn't benefit the population at large, only the US's own interests. Every nation has the right to choose who invests in their country, and who they want to have trade relations with, even if it's in Latin America (by the way, is not the US's backyard, that term is insulting to the sovereignty/independence of those countries, since no one gave the US government any rights over Latin America).

    Peru is still very far away from the USA, unlike the US's military presence in the South China Sea and nuclear weaponry in S Korea and Japan. So why is the US so worked up?

      As an American, I say we should have invested in Peru and the rest of South America much more vigorously. The lean towards populism in the U.S. and the “America First” movement has lead to a lethargy of development in the Americas.
      Oh by the way backyard is just a figure of speech , the United States is also in Peru’s back yard….. just means we are close geographically …. Perhaps poor choice of words. Sorry.

      while China invests in countries where it has bridges, roads, schools, ports, etc. Despite having a communist policy in China, abroad China's policy is very capitalist and does not take advantage like the United States.

    Its a private investment though, Peruvian government is not involved in this at all, only as supervisors, the other 40% is owned by private Peruvian/Swiss capital.

The problem is that the US wants South America and Africa to stay underdeveloped to ease US domination over them and safeguard US hegemony so competing with China in helping development in South America and Africa are against US geo politics. The most likely US action is not investment in development, but funding terror groups and sowing chaos and violence.
