- This is one of my favorite jobs to do with my Porsche 911 and although it can be a little intimidating for first-timers, it's actually a very simple and straight forward job. What's more, doing it yourself can save you $200 or more at the Porsche dealer. In this video we go step-by-step through the job as well as doing a thorough inspection of the oil filter and talk about the infamous IMS BEARING and what to look out for.
As ever, thanks so much for watching my videos and supporting my channel. Keep the comments and chat coming! More videos coming soon. Cheers!

I love the attention to detail on this video, even being JUST and oil change.
Thank you!
Attention to detail? What about putting the new oil in?
❤❤❤❤ Making me miss my 996.2 more and more.....so glad it went to you and you take proper care of it. I will get another Porsche hopfully very soon
I hope so too!
Thanks James! Very nicely explained with all the details required.
Glad it was helpful!
Love the new effects. Keep it up James! 🎉
Thanks so much!
Best of the best 🤝
Thanks Artur!!
Love the color!
Thank you! Cheers!
I don’t recall you saying anything about running the car a few minutes to warm up the oil so it flows out more easily. I like doing that on my 996 4S.
very cool 😎
Porsche recommend changing the filter housing periodically also ,the whole kit, filter seal and housing is like £35 ,there is a small widget in the bottom of the housing that can become detached mine was
Yea, so you only empty it? Who do you get to put the new oil in?
Awesome. Thanks. Can you post a video on a 991.2?
Absolutely!! I'm absolutely dying to get the first 991.2 video finished. Hopefully this week!
Nice video! There's a plastic bracing skeleton @4:56 when you're disassembling the old oil filter. But... I didn't see you transfer that skeleton into the new oil filter. Did you do the transfer off camera, or does the new oil filter come with its own plastic skeleton? Supposedly the skeleton is to help prevent the paper oil filter from collapsing under pressure, which could lead to oil starvation.
Hi James. Nice DIY video! Keep ‘‘em coming. Was there a reason you didn’t partially fill the oil filter housing with fresh oil? I’ve always done that to alleviate any dry start issues associated with a longer time till the oil pressure comes up.
Thank you! Having seen first hand how quickly the oil gets injected into the filter housing when you first start the engine (fast, furious and messy if the housing isn't torqued correctly!), I don't worry about that. Within seconds of starting the engine it's swimming in oil.
James,
Which vehicle lift do you have in your garage. Thinking seriously about getting one, and yours looks to be less intrusive than some. Thanks
996 and 997.1, filter is underneath. For 997.2 and 991.1 (at least, not sure about 991.2) the filter is on top. Newer 9A1 engine. Like the stripes. Have you ever considered bore scoping the cylinders from the sump? As handy as you are, I think it’d make good content. Not really that hard.
That’s a great idea!! Sounds absolutely terrifying but I’m game!
@@AutoAmateur Drain the oil, drop the sump plate, turn the engine by hand and snake the borescope into the cylinders. A lot of trial and error trying to get the scope into the cylinders, but not rocket science. Definitely something you can handle. If I can do it…. And I don’t even have a CZcams channel, Podcast, and snazzy website. 😂
Did you ever do the video focused on the interior leather etc?
No, I still have a few pieces I want to finish before I do that.
@@AutoAmateur Looking forward to it. Interior is one of the highest complaints on 996 but few videos showing a renewed interior!
Hi 👋 🇺🇸❤️🇺🇦
Hello!! 🇺🇸❤️🇺🇦
Are the stripes on the car Matte Black or Gloss Black?
They're matte black. I actually had both options with me to choose from but the gloss looked like it was going to be way too 'in your face'. I like the contrast between the paint finish and matte stripes.
