The bottom end on the Sportster has a long H-D lineage, it can be directly traced to the 1929 "Flathead" motor. The "Ironhead" top end came out in 1957 and the "Evolution" top end dates back to 1986. H-D's "Flat Tracker" XR-750 using a modified Sportster motor, won 29 out of the 37 AMA Grand National Championships between 1972 and 2008. The Sportster is indeed a true Harley-Davidson, I'm 64 years old and I've owned a 2011 XL883N from new. These Big Twin owning Sportster haters remind me of a "Gentleman's Sausage Measuring Competition", they are totally childish and are growing old before they've grown up.

Not enough to make it blow up in the heat of summer but outrun the big twins and compression that let my peanut tank outrun a twin cam on a trip with ease. During a Laughlin River Run it was parked. A guy was up close looking at it with the V&H 2-1 Pro Pipe. He smirked when he saw me walk up. When I smiled and started it up he looked shocked and backed up 10 feet mouthing “what the hell”

Kinda neat but I didn't sign up for it after a year for the same reason. The factory wanted me to buy a FLH cause they make more money on a hog than a Sporty. Imma be honest, I personally love harley davidson. Being a young 19 yr old in college I've been loving the 1200 sportster. Got it cheap used and did some work on it. Theres soemthing about having a harley that having a honda shadow doesnt have. I know it's kinda bs but I feel like a harley has a lot of soul in it rather than my first bike (honda shadow VT600). To each their own. But personally would love to own an old shovel head. That being said I think harley should start to spread its wings instead of sticking with just the main line up of v twins. Would love to have them come out with some supermotos. I know they will be a little late to the party but I feel like if they want to truly last they should focus on spreading out kinda how they did with the livewire. Leave a like if u like the sportster too🙂

I guess it all depends too, my dad used to build those coffin tank choppers, he was in an MC so I grew up surrounded by Harley. Harley everything everywhere, and I love the bikes and love the looks, but from my perspective being surrounded by it, for me different engine configurations are actually more fascinating, and some of these so called soulless inline 4s with supposedly no character are actually very intriguing to me. At the end of the day though the experiences and memories have always meant the most to me no matter what the ride, and with that said I don't care what anyone rides, if you like something then just ride it, who cares. 🤙🏼🏍

I'm a millennial, and I'm a huge sucker for a fat front tire. Harley Sportsters are what got me into bikes in the first place. I'm scratching that itch now with a Honda Rebel, but I would be crushed if they were discontinued before I'm able to buy one.

I inherited my Sportster from my dad and honestly, I couldn't have asked for a better bike to start riding on. It's a 2004, carburated, and prefers to get donkey kicked to change gears rather than just a lil love tap on some newer rides but I love it so much. In 15 years, I'll look back on my first ride the same way I think about my first love.

My 2000 1200S is a great sport bike. Dual ignition, dual discs in front, V&H pipes and Screamin' Eagle upgrade. It's only got 10K miles on it! I've left it stock and got it from an estate sale.

  • @garyt7622

I bought an XL1200CP back in 2013 and I really like the bike after all the upgrades. Old-school cruiser setup. Progressive suspension front & rear, Screamin' Eagle 2 kit, Mustang saddle seat, windshield, running lites, saddle bags, buckhorn handle bars (I hated the cafe style bars), Vance & Hines "Twin Slash" mufflers, and a luggage rack. I have it set up for solo riding. Plenty of power and lots of fun to ride. And now, it will become a relic since Harley has stopped making them and replaced them with their version of a Honda that sells for $22,000! It's paid for and hauls me around just fine. Even the dealer says I have it set up real nice. Big Blue Pearl factory colors looks sweet and old-school with white wall tires. In 2013 the custom came with a FAT front tire and I like it too! I wish I could post a photo with this comment. It looks sweet! From my experience, more people like the Sporty than hate it. Solid engine that is easy to maintain. I parked it for 3 years and almost sold it but, now I know I will never sell it! I now have 23,000 miles on it. I do need to put the racing clutch in it so I can rid it of the weak point it has....the "Flex Plate" that is two plates riveted with brass rivets that will leave you stranded when the rivets fail. The kit adds an extra clutch plate. Maybe this spring....I do all my own maintenance. Nice to be able to tweak the fuel injection with a laptop.

Sold my Yamaha a hear ago and bought a 2019 HD Iron 1200. Gonna have it for a long time. The fact that the only thing I’ve done to it is change the exhaust and it still smokes these other Harley’s and cruisers I’ve ran into is insane. I’ve more than once almost came off the back of it. Even taken it down to NC (IND to NC) and back with just a change of the seat. My brothers Elytra Glide is sooo nice but for what I do, my Iron is the way to go.

People seem to forget that the K model and Sportster were the factory race bikes of the 50's, 60's, and 70's. They would smoke just about any other bike on the road at the time into the early 70's. They devolved into their current form, but they're still fun as hell. Oh, and you forgot that the increase to 1000 cc was in the early 70's. Before that they were called 900s (883 cc).

I love my Sporty and it's a "little" 2005 XL883 standard with a carb and mip-pegs. Simple, bulletproof, easy to work on, available parts, always starts, never breaks down and has never burned, dripped or leaked a drop of oil. I do NOT like the Iron or Low models because the rear shocks don't work and the seats are paper thin.

Hey Yammie, I know this might get lost in the reactions but I have a question for you. I live in the EU in the Netherlands, so over here we have the A1, A2, A code 80 and A licenses for motorrcycles.
I want to get a motorcycle and my preferred choice is the Honda cbr500r which fallls under the A2 license (just a quick mention, I am 20 at the moment) but I believe the lessons for A license and A2 license cost the same but of course the driving lessons and difficulty might be differen so I wanted to ask for your advice and opinion. Also just to mention, I drive a motorbike (sorry I don't know what to call it but it is a scooter but with shifting so basically a motorcycle limited to 30 miles per hour) so I am a little confident in my ability with shifting and all that kind of stuff.
Yet I still want to ask you if you have any advice for me, I know this might be way too personal of a question but I still want to ask it.
Besides my question there are actually quite a few people that I know that drive motorbikes (Same thing as I myself drive that I mentioned earlier but don't know what to call it) and I believe that maybe a video more focussed on european fans might get a lot of views.
Of course this is just my opinion and these were just a few things I wanted to ask/mention since I have actually already learned quite a lot from your channel even though I don't even own a bike yet.

Sportsters are fun as heck and I'll tell you why... Not all of us are Rossi, spending days on days on the track, and its hard as hell to actually make use of a sport bike. Sportsters are great because its just so fun to redline it every shift when hitting an on ramp, and feels so cool when you're folding your footpeg up 45 degrees and dragging it the entire way through a turn. It's so much easier on a sportster for the average rider to use it at 100% and push its limit. Makes you smile.

I love my 2018 Iron 1200. It's the third Sportster I've owned, and I'll probably keep it until I die (I'm 54). It makes plenty of power for my needs. I'm honestly not interested in any other bike in Harley's current line up. Not saying I'll never buy another bike, but the Sportster stays. They are (relatively) simple, and there are a *ton* of aftermarket mods you can do to them.
