I have used the pre-sewn cartwheel mallet felts from Vic Firth and they were easy to replace. The problem was that they were not as soft as I wanted them to be compared with the ball heads. I used my own homemade voicing tool and cuticle scissors to fix the problem. I don't have my own set of timpani drums at home, so I couldn't really tell the difference until I'm at band practice.
