Finally, play quarter notes. To play the quarter notes exactly with the click of the metronome you must subdivide in your head. In other words you have to think the 16th notes or the 8th notes so that you play the 1/4 n...

    • @freepercussionlesson
      @freepercussionlesson Před 6 měsíci

      Each drum has a range so any note that’s within the drums range can be easily tuned. The 29” drum can easily play any note from F to D so it just depends on what the composer asked for in the music .

    What tension should each head have depending on the size of each drum?

    • @freepercussionlesson
      @freepercussionlesson Před 11 měsíci

      I use the drum dial to ensure that the head over each tuning lug is the same and I don't worry about what the reading is because each drum has a broad range notes. Just mount the head within the range of the drum; for example the 29" drum's lowest note should be F and the highest note should be D. Then set the peddle to the pitch A. Then use the drum dial to make sure that all of the lugs have the same tension.. Hope that helps.

    Does a regular drum key work for tuning timpani or do you need one specific for timps? Thanks.

    • @freepercussionlesson
      @freepercussionlesson Před rokem

      Snare drum tuning keys and timpani tuning keys are different sizes. If you can't find a timpani tuning key you can always use an adjustable wrench. Ludwig and Yamaha timpani use the same size key. Other brands of timpani like Adams, Majestic, etc use a different size, but none to my knowledge use a key that fits a snare drum

    I thought drummers were not supposed to practice speeding up and slowing down. Do I have that wrong?

    • @freepercussionlesson
      @freepercussionlesson Před rokem

      When you are trying to build speed you need to start slow and get faster and then slowing down again builds control. You are correct that drummers need to have a good sense of time and to be able to play without wavering in tempo but that’s a different topic

    What about when you push the pedal down to tune the timpani to a higher pitch, but the pedal moves back to a lower pitch position?

    • @freepercussionlesson
      @freepercussionlesson Před rokem

      Most issues with the pedal involve the head tension. If the head tension is too low the pitch will rise and if the head tension is too high the pitch will fall. Check that the heads are tuned appropriately for the drum. The 32' drum should be able to reach a low C and as high as an A. The 29" drum should go from an F to a D; 26" should go from Bb to F and the 23" should go from a D to an A. If that doesn't work you might have to adjust the pedal spring tension, but that is always a last resort. If the head is really old and played a new head usually solves any balance issues. Remember that the pedal and head tension have to be in balance for the drum to work properly. That's why they are called "Balanced Action Timpani" Hope that helps.

    I’m glad you mentioned Beethoven’s Ninth because I always suspected that the bass drum and cymbal parts were meant to be played by the same person in that score and you have just confirmed it. Thank you. It makes sense because that’s how it’s done in Turkish marching bands (which as you know is what inspired Classical composers when they use these instruments, as in Mozart’s Abduction from the Seraglio and Haydn’s 100th Symphony - and I imagine those works also use this setup). Though I believe that in Balkan countries the cymbal is played with a stick. Thanks again and I hope that you are still thriving as you were eight years ago.

    Do you do multiple bounce rolls and double stroke rolls, like on a snare drum, or is it typically single stroke rolls on timpani, hence the need for the softer mallets? Thanks.

    • @freepercussionlesson
      @freepercussionlesson Před 2 lety

      I guess that’s part of it but the tone and resonance is what makes for good timpani sound so softer mallets bring out more of that on timpani .
