A little about me and this channel:
My name is James Aubrey IV and I just recently graduated college from Iowa State University. After college I decided to take a leap of faith. So I moved to San Diego California to pursue my passion for videography/ CZcams. Overall I'm a pretty chill person, outside of CZcams I like to longboard, dance, play video games, lift weights and hangout with my friends. I know that success on CZcams won't happen overnight but I'm willing to stay patient and put in the work to try to prefect my craft daily. This CZcams channel will be centered around my life after college. You will be able to see all of the ups and downs on my journey to success. So if you like the content make sure you subscribe so you can be apart of the Rome Life Family. (Let's build our own personal Rome's together.)
What is the Rome Life ? And What does it mean to be apart of it?
Rome Life is something I started during my Sophomore year of high school (one of the worst times in my life) it started off as me documenting my journey to recovery from my shoulder surgery but eventually it turned into a platform that I could use to encourage myself as well as others to chase our dreams.
Rome Life isn't just a saying it's a way of life and for the people who want to be apart of it have to realize that. Rome wasn't built in a day it took a lot of handwork time and most importantly patience. So you can't expect your dreams to be any different

I'm 65 and I still remember when this came out. It was a different time. The Vietnam War was raging, the hippie movement was growing and the young people were either protesting or try to escape reality for at least a little while. Psychedelic music was a temporary escape. Sit back in your beanball chair, headphones and a joint in one hand popsicle in the other. Go for a ride on the magic carpet! Check out the Pusher Man by Steppenwolf.

      Economy collapse?
If you were in United States and not drafted, what was so depressing? People in the eastern side of the world were in more need of escape. Lol! That same old Baby Boomer excuse... "we had it rough" "we needed escape"

Glad you enjoyed this -- it is a great song, and Steppenwolf definitely liked to push boundaries. I've heard them called the fathers of heavy metal; that itself is debatable, but the fact that it's called "heavy metal," does come from a lyric in their song "Born to be Wild," ("I like smoke and lightning, heavy metal thunder").
As far as the instrument goes, it's just called an organ. A piano is a separate instrument, comparable only in that it is played with a keyboard -- so that is the word you would use to tie them together. There are several keyboard instruments -- piano (full name pianoforte), digital piano, synthesizer, organ, harpsichord, celesta, and countless others (along with the precursor to the pianoforte, which was called a fortepiano). So refer to these and similar instruments collectively, you can call them keyboards. Sorry, the music teacher in me is showing through again, lol.
But yeah, I always enjoy your reactions. Keep it up!

I was playing in a band in Georgia back then, around 1978. We were setting up for a rehearsal and the guys were talking about a band they saw the night before. They said they are playing again tonight, I said Let’s go!!! The band comes out and is rocking hard with one guitar player and part of the band. Just when you think it can’t get any better, a second guitarist comes out. They were killing it, just when it felt like the roof was coming down, the third guitarist comes out. Dave Hlubeck. Oh my God, it was awesome. At their break, we went outside to get some fresh air. I turn around and Dave Hlubeck walks up and asks how we like the show. Dang nice guy. They were getting ready for their tour of the first album!!!

Oh music to my ears the phenomenal Steppenwolf. This band was formed in LA in 1967 with Lead Singer John Kay, Keyboardist Goldy McJohn, Drummer Jerry Edmonton, Guitarist Michael Monarch all originally from Canada. Their Big Break was writing Born to Be Wild for the movie Easy Rider with Peter Fonda - this is the ultimate Biker song and you will hear it at every Biker Rally or event out there from Daytona Bike Week to Sturgis Bike Month. Magic Carpet ride is another fun song from them. They all have amazing vocal work and great layering and blending of the instruments they have nice changes from slow to fast from quiet to more loud - they defiantly keep your ears engaged. These guys came out of the vinyl record era when Long Playing Albums initially came out and allowed artists to put more than one song on a record which the case for many years before with the old smaller 45 records that 1 song on the A side and one song on the B side. So before it was all about getting a hit single but the LP Album came out artists could explore. They started coming out with what came to be called the Concept Album (bands like Pink Floyd are the Gold Standard for this). So what it is they viewed a record as a canvass to express themselves much more like say a book of literature so where you have title of the book and you have 7 8 or 9 different chapters that in some way go into detail about that main idea but each may be a little different or cover different things. And back then they didn't have digital where you could create a playlist of different songs. So the Album was designed so you could put it on the record player go lay back on the sofa but the lava lamp on smoke a blunt and spend a full hour or more just listening to that album. Usually you would have the album cover in hand because the album art on the covers was always intriguing and the inserts were always cool to look at. Bear in there was MTV or anything - the only way you had to see what they guys in the band looked like or visually convey what the band or the record was about was thru the Album Cover Art and the Inserts - back in they day they took to a whole other level. They don't do cover art on modern cd's the way they used to. Interestingly today with digital downloads people generally listen to singles and the focus is back to the hit single just like it was with the old 45 vinyl records in the 40s, 50s, and up to about the mind 60s. I guess everything goes around and comes around again but maybe in a different form or fashion. As always you picked a great band to listen to. I would encourage you to see the Movie Easy Rider its an Iconic Movie from the late 1960s and you see tons of cultural references based on it even today and of course give a listen to Born To Be Wild. Also know these guys are fun to watch in a live video they are very entertaining.

I stepped in and said--give him 2 Vitamin C tablets and let me talk to him. The doctor called my supervisor and when told--she told the doctor to listen to me. John Kay the leader of Steppenwolf escaped from a communist country with his mother as a child and came to the US. This tune was a huge FM hit back in the day. They were harder rock but with a healthy touch of funk plainly on display in Carpet Ride. It made them unique at that time. Another cut on this LP full of suprise is "Don't Step on the Grass Sam" and Great lyrics on the great song called "Ostrich" from their first LP . John Kay was a great lyricist. What you are hearing is the Classic Hammond B3 organ it has been used by so many rock bands, blues bands, gospel groups, church music and choruses its just been used everywhere. You will also hear what is called an electric piano in many songs of the 50s 60s and 70s which was a portable piano, precursor to a modern keyboard, that was plugged into an electric outlet and it had a distinctive sound that was warm and inviting. On modern keyboards you can get most all of these sounds and then some but you will still hear those sounds in recordings. Some bands will still haul around a Hammond B3. I am a school trained musician who can read music and gravitated after school to guitar, keyboards, harmonica - I play all the time as a hobbyist in my house - I have recording capability up to making a demo download or cd. Part of playing music is listening to more and more music to expand your music knowledge and appreciation. As I have aged the types of music I listen to and like has changed much and I find the more I listen to the more I like to try playing it. What happens is if I play music 5 nights a week I now can sit down and play 2 hours a night of music that I am in the mood for; one night its kind of jazzy, one night its more country or Americana, one night its more bluesy, another more classic rock. The more you can do this the more you will play the better musically skilled you will get and you will have more fun with the music it is you are playing. I have played out live and I am a decent singer but I really like backing up and helping out other musicians. My most memorable night out playing was joining the man who was in John Cougar Mellencamp's band for a long time and was the man that actually wrote most of the songs. He came out to my local music bar and I backed him up on acoustic guitar and harmonica - so he could focus on the vocals - just makes it easier for a vocalist and helps them build rapport with the audience in a smaller more intimate venue. Anyway we closed the show out to a Standing Ovation with his rendition of Pink Houses which he actually wrote with me on that Harmonica and him on vocals and on the acoustic - the reason he got on acoustic is that to get the bends and vibrato on the Harmonica you need to do Pink Houses you need to stand up and hold it with both hands as opposed to when you use an apparatus that holds the harmonica when you are playing the guitar because your doing more straight notes and a very slight bend because it will slip all over the place. The combo of an acoustic guitar and harmonica was how most singer songwriters in the 50s and 60s composed music its not used as much today with the ability to use recording software. But knowing how to play that combo really makes many of songs sound really good when you play them yourself or out live at a small venue like a coffee house. Many lead singers who don't play big instruments will use a harmonica as an accent instrument. After that big show It was so fun to then go out and mingle with people - they were buying me drinks and talking to me - just complimented me on how awesome it sounded. I still have friends on Facebook who were people I met after that show. My day job is to support my music habit and my Harley habit as long time New and Pre Owned Sales Advisor and a Car Dealership and believe me it keeps me extremely busy. Music as a hobby, playing when and were you want, playing what your want, with no touring is really fun. I went a little long but wanted to give you some detailed background information so you can have that knowledge. If you ever get the itch to try instruments and vocals my recommendation would be to get good quality keyboard and find a local music, piano and vocal teacher who is good at working with adults. They will cover the basics of how to play the piano, how read music and the numbers system, cheat sheets. The all important Ear Training, Vocal exercises and training (how to get the right pitch, the right tone how to take care of your voice so you don't nodules on your vocal chords), they will cover key aspects of Music Theory. This will really help you when you get good enough to start listening to recordings and be able to play along with them on your instrument. This is one of the main things musicians and guys in bands do to practice because its the closest to being in a band without actually physically being in a real band. Also you will be one step ahead of the recordings you are playing along with because you will know where its going because you have music theory training. A good teacher giving you this knowledge can have the basics to you in about 6 months and if get playing regularly you'll you will get your playing chops really going after about a year. With ability to read music and play music by ear you open up a whole world of things to play and not take days and weeks to learn the music - time will get reduced to 5 and 10 minutes and you will be able to at some point to read and play a piece of sheet music perfectly on the very first pass. Also know that competent piano player will get the most offers to play - everything from playing keys in a band, to playing taverns, restaurants, to weddings, birthdays, musical shows, cruise ships, at your church for worship music and to accompany the chorus. You'll be busy. And you can plug in the keyboard to your recording software on your computer and record everything from what you are practicing so you listen for mistakes and ways to improve to putting down composition ideas. And then you can create a demo quality CD or Download at home that is sufficient enough to take to another musician or a professional recording studio so they can hear what it is you've been working on. A professional Recording studio will take it from there - they might use more actual musicians like studio musicians, along with much more advanced recording equipment and a ton more quality control - you'll have a truly Professional Recording once they get it done. I know you are on a journey and gaining more knowledge daily I just wanted you to have some real in the trenches nuts and bolts about instruments and musicianship. I love doing it and it for me is the most creative thing I do. I really don't care if I earn a dime off of it - its truly my release from the world of going thru the motions of our regular lives. I am glad you are enjoying the journey and I see you getting more interested and your growing on every single review. Here is to you! You have friend in me.
