Will this fin help in larger waves? Longboard Surfing Fin Test

- In today's vlog I test out a new fin which I hope will help keep my longboard stable in larger surf. I typically struggle a bit with my FCS 9" pivot so I'm looking for alternatives. Enjoy!

Fin: Wingnut Longrake 10"
Board: Bing Continental
Location: New Jersey
I'd like to do some fin comparison videos, so if anyone lives in the NJ area and would like to surf with me so we can fin swap, let me know! DM me on Insta @longboard_sessions
Just discovered your videos and have already learned so much! I live in Philadelphia but I make the drive to various Jersey Shore points depending on conditions every chance I get. I would be great to surf together and swap fins in larger surf to feel the difference in board performance. I was trying to figure out how to PM you to give you my contact information but I can't figure it out. Do you know how to send a PM on youtube?
@@CallaHerse oh sweet Andy! Message me on Instagram @longboard_sessions and we can set something up.
Dude, your progression is solid. I'm doomscrolling, happened to watch this video, and just by the turns and your cross stepping, I had to check the post date. Sure enough, a full two years. Keep it up, the practice shows!
Wow thanks so much!
Thank you very much for the encouragement and the mention dear Brian. Pleasantly filled me with stoked energy to keep learning and finish my first year surfing strong...:) you right, it was a challenging day, wasn't easy to catch 'em...But as always you squeezed that lemon:) see you in de water in 3 hours haha
oh no... you were still awake haha! Well maybe I'll see you this morning 😉. You killed it on this video bro
Hey Brian_ me again from France _ for the bigger wave__ I go with the FCS Fat BOY 9,5_ I seem to give more agility and flex in the biggest drop with my 9,2 Scott Anderson longboard_
I usually ride it with a 9 Captain Fin on smaller waves
Love your videos bud
Oh sweet! I've never tried that fin. Yea some extra flex and a thinner fin seems to help quite a bit on the larger faster waves. I'm currently in the process of reviewing another fin that seems to work well on the bigger waves as well
Your laugh all ways puts a smile on my face
Glad you like it haha! My laugh is often compared to a hyena 😜
Masterful take-offs with good, quick turns. The ride at 5:45 was especially good, with cross-stepping forward to stay on the wave.
thanks man! it was a tough day, but some fun rides for sure
FCS II Hatchet 10. I have used it on a 9'1" Torque The Don and recently on my new 11'0" glider by Mark Angell. It's a winner!
I actually have that exact fin and size, but never used it yet. I'm going to do a video on it soon!
I really like the Fins Unlimited Joel Tudor 10.0 Classic Fin. It is a Pivot Style fin with more updated lines. Works well in small or bigger surf on my 9,6 nose rider.
Someone else mentioned a Joel tudor fin as well... I'll look into it! Thanks
I love Macho Fins from Spain. The Bow fin in 10,5" is my favorite
Nice! I'll check em out
Awesome dude !! Cool intake of the larger fin. Also congrats to Gilad. For sure doing better. 🏄🏻
Thanks! Yea he is really getting there!
Love your content and your presentation! I wish your videos are longer! Im not complaining though.
haha thanks Martin! My videos will start to get
longer over time, but for now I’m just trying to keep em tight while I learn what I’m doing hehe
Maybe more surfing and less driving around looking for the right beach Brian. Love the surfing content but it is sometimes only a third of the video.
Hi Brian, thx for you vids! Just discovered your channel. I am a surfer from The Netherlands and also learning to nose ride. Its hard but I can't be my board, a dewey 9,4" pintail :) Hanging besides my Hobie 9,2" and my Walden 9,0" Yes my friend, got the boards, now to the nose!
Awesome thanks! You’ll get it… just takes a little determination and confidence
A 10.5 4A style fin would be a good starting point for a fin arsenal. About 80% of fin needs could be covered with a pivot fin, and a 4A. I am also a fan of fins like the davenport club or the DN long rake style fins.
Alright I'm going to buy a 4a style... you havent steered me wrong yet. Would you still recommend a 10.5" on a 9'2" board though? Maybe 10 would be more suitable
I'm also going to try a 10" pivot vs my current 9"
@@LongboardSessions 10" would be fine.
Ahah, same waves I have here.
Nice video, always a pleasure to see you on your board.
thanks Nicolas! fun time
First of all, you are self-deprecating but you definitely have some skills so hats off there. Secondly this video must have been filmed earlier bc it has been super flat in monmouth county lately
haha thanks Hardy! Yes this was filmed about 2 weeks ago. I'm typically 1 to 2 weeks ahead on footage.. or behind.. however you want to look at it
Just came across your channel, love the content, have watched all your vids already!!!
From South Africa :)
Awesome David, thanks!
there are several fins i have/use. the Tyler Warren Pivot 10.25 is certainly the largest of them...its a great fin however I really don't use that often as i prefer my Joel Tudor 9.125 and the midlength for larger steeper waves.
Ok sweet I'll check those out! Im starting to realize these small differences can have a big impact on performance. I used to think an inch difference in fin can't make much of a difference... I was wrong haha
@@LongboardSessions i probably should add that Captain Fins is local to me so those models are pretty widely available in all surf shops which may influence my opinion on what type fin to own/use. for a while now i've wanted to try out something from island fin design (islandfindesign.com/). maybe i'll have to buy a new board to do that!
@@andrewreilly9693 Any excuse to buy a new board right?? 🤙
I use the Flying Diamonds Cali Pívot 10.5 on a 9.5 log. That works well for me when the purpose is just going straight.
oh cool. What are the downsides to a larger fin? maybe slower speed?
@@LongboardSessions to me is more control in the pocket but running the risk of the wave running away from you if you are not closer to the nose.
Longboarding head high waves are the best🤙🏽
I like it if the waves are a little less steep. These were a little too powerful to get technical
@@LongboardSessions 🤙🏽
I’ve started using a 10.75” experience fin by Kevin skvarna from flying diamonds pushed all the way forward in the box on my 10’ CJ Nelson Sprout. It’s a nice carving template with really solid depth for stable nose rides. Not sure what size your board is but the 10.25” or 10.75” would probably be really good for you.
oh sweet, I’ll check that one out! my board is a 9’2”, so I assume I’ll need a slightly smaller one
@@LongboardSessions most likely. I saw on another comment of yours that you asked about the difference between fin sizes and the only thing I have noticed from putting a 9” to an 11” in my 10’ noserider is stability on the nose. No speed differences.
@@emans4seam Ah very interesting. I want to get the same version pivot I have but in a 10". If theres no downside, I wouldn't mind the extra stability
@@LongboardSessions The thing I’ve found the most enjoyable is in line with CJ Nelson and his “over fin the board and move it all the way forward in the box” mentality
@@emans4seam that's what next week's vlog is about... I did some fin placement testing
Hello Brian! Bro, what did you put on fin box? Looks like a pen... (at 4:00, before install the red fin on your board). Thanks a lot! I am watching all your videos here from Brazil!
Hey Anderson! that was just a pen i was using to get the fin screw nut back in the right place hehe
@@LongboardSessions hehehehe I thought maybe a special secret!!!!
Some fun waves!
Yea these were a good time!
When you compare fin positions, have Gilad adjust the fin without your knowledge. That is, so you don't know it's position--a single-blind experiment. So far, I haven't noticed any difference, forward or back.
Already have that video shot and I'm starting to edit it. I noticed a pretty significant difference... atleast on that day hehe
I run 9.5 Alex knost captain with fin jammed up in box for turns.
Sweet. Still pretty stable on noserides with the fin up like that?
Loved this Vlog buddy🤙🤙
thanks Adam!
Christenson, 9", or try a Fatboy (The one with the bulb on the end), fatboy would be unique
Interesting. I'll check em out!
Great edit!
Wouldn't it be more enjoyable on a midlength or egg-style shortboard? And do you consider trying carves and manoeuvres instead of noserides on these type of conditions?
Otherwise I ride a 10" FCS Fatboy, great pivot and stability on the nose at the same time.
thanks! well at this point in my surfing ,
my goal is to try to noseride every wave I can. In the future however, I would utilize the bigger days to work on maneuvers and overall style
@@LongboardSessions Thanks for your reply :)
Another fun session 🤙🏼
yea bro! good time
Dead kooks 10.5 volan fin perfect for steeper waves
Sweet! I got a lot of fins to check out now hehe. Maybe I'll do a comparison video soon
try a retro D Fin
I'll check it out!
Are you ever gonna try a shortboard for fun?
my first 3 or 4 years surfing was on a short board. I’ll probably take one out once a year if it’s barreling hehe
