- In this longboard surfing vlog, I stumbled upon something that I think could be a game changer when it comes to cross stepping and noseriding. It's been quite a process trying to improve on my cross stepping and this is a huge step. I hope this helps with your longboard surfing!
Longboard: Bing Continental
Location: New Jersey: Avon, Belmar, Springlake, Deal, Bradley Beach, Point Pleasant, Manasquan, Long Branch
Another thought: You don't need to go all the way to the nose on each ride. Sometimes the sweet spot for a particular wave may be just halfway to the nose.
True, but i can't help myself haha
Thanks for the great tips! easier said than done though!
Great video. Really good quality footage. Love the music, too. I’m on a similar longboarding journey and came across your channel while doing some cross-stepping research. I’m quite enjoying it because your experience parallels my own so closely. It’s particularly nice that you’re also goofy, so it’s all the same orientation. I find it so helpful to watch clear, high-quality footage of surfers of similar ability to me working through similar challenges in waves similar to the ones I surf. You just got yourself a new subscriber. Thanks 🙏🤙🏄♂️
Awesome Jeff! Theres so much that goes into cross stepping and noseriding... thats what makes it fun hehe. What state you surfing in?
Your tips have been great. Thanks for posting.
Glad they help Matthew!
I am trying to work on my cross step , and documenting it . Your video really helps a lot!!!
Awesome! check out this other video I made. czcams.com/video/oPQME10odf4/video.html
That tip has been the most helpful for me so far!
I love your videos!!!! So helpful!!!
Thanks so much! Glad they help!
Interesting and very helpful. Love your videos thank you!
Glad it helped!
Nice analysis and technique suggestions, I'll have to experiment next time I go out!
Awesome, hope it helps! Check out the video im uploading tomorrow. I discuss a cross stepping tip that helped me tremendously
These waves look so fun!!!
Yes! Surf can get pretty good fun here
Great video. I really enjoy the drone footage!
Thanks Will! Chris is a master on the drone hehe
Dog food is the breakfast for longboard cross steppers?!
I appreciate your fun and informative videos! Keep up the good work!
Haha! Thanks! Will do 👍
I also find it easier to cross step (IRL:shuffle )toward the back of the board. For me, it's because that's where the stability is.
yea it's very interesting. I'm starting to figure out the frontside cross stepping tho. I'm sure ill explain my findings in future videos hehe
nice analogy...but luckily surfing isn't like golfing...not even close! Lol! Take my word for it... don't ask me what I do for a living, just trust me on this! Epic video, great stuff Brian! Yew!
haha oh I know. Im a mediocre golfer and MAN are there ups and downs in that sport (pun intended!)
@@LongboardSessions lol... biggest difference is when I am surfing and I wipe out I start laughing at myself... but one bad shot in golf can send into a spiral of self paralysis by over analyzing🤣
Hahaha exactly
Very good mate
Thanks!!
Same, front side cross stepping is impossible for me 😅
Yea me too! It has been getting better lately tho.. still not as good as my backside stepping tho
Interesting. I have a harder time cross stepping on backside waves. Love your videos my guy.
Thanks Mike! Yea im a weirdo who does better backside lol. Probably cause we have mostly rights here in NJ
Me too haha
nice little waves
Yea they were fun!
When your surfing backhand you seem to stall the board 03:54 04:13 naturally on the bottom turn which sets up the nose ride.. it’s very subtle I could be wrong. Probably am as I’m no expert haha
Actually, I'm sure you're correct. Something happens naturally for me on a backside wave and thats most likley it. I'll have to try and re create that on a left
Yes!! Gotta be in those critical nose riding sections for optimal hold! So fun!
Totally! When i first started getting to the nose I thought trying it on a critical section would be impossible. Turns out it's easier haha
Not that any maneuver is easy. But most, especially on a short board, are bang bang. Commit, execute, then you're on to the next. Nose riding is an exception. The maneuver can take 10 seconds to set up, a few seconds on the nose, then 5 seconds to reset to the next.
You're "executing" the maneuver the entire time. And you're usually locked in to the time frame. You have possibly 15 seconds and 20 cross steps to do correctly and at the correct time. If you hurry getting to the nose, spend to long there, or not go back in time you're not gonna pull it off.
Like you, I found myself focussing on getting to the nose like it was the end of a race. Then what? That's just 1/3 of the move tho.
Oh man well said. It's so many maneuvers linked together to get everything perfect. And all while we're limited on time lol. BUT, that is what is so exciting about longboarding IMO
👏👏👏👏👏
I’m back 😬 with another question. I was out at Assategue and this really nice woman was trying to help me cross step. (Failed but I learned to turn better and working on cut backs) but back to the question 😂 when you cross step do you look down at the board or look up?
You always are looking down the line where you are going. Watch where the pros look while the cross step. I suppose there may be an occasional glance, but it mostly comes down to feel and experience. You can see enough of the board in your peripheral vision anyhow
@@LongboardSessions ok cool thanks so much 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
shout out QuickCheck @2:05
Good ol quick check😂
I need to trim higher then start my cross step. I’m regular so my rights are easier for me.
Yes! You'll even see the pros really hold off their cross steps till they feel the board is properly stalled and trimmed. Experiment with over stalling as well. You'll lose some waves that way, but it will help you find the middle ground.
@@LongboardSessions thank you!!!!
Yes, important to be traveling along the wave before cross-stepping. Relevant to that, here's what I'm working on, and from your video, you could benefit from the same thing: I try to whip that board around as soon as I pop up, then immediately cross-step. That is, pop up farther back, stall, carve the turn, and step. I see a lot of pros do it. Here's an example: instagram.com/p/CKbOeEcHkEk/ Note how she pops up far back and on one side of the board.
Yea that’s a great move. I do have trouble popping up farther back on the board tho. Need to work on that hehe
My issue I have at the moment is actually taking that first step! I get leg locked. Any tips to take your first step? 😂😅
Haha! Yes, just do it and plan on wiping out. Fully commit and go for it. Every time you do that you’ll start to figure things out. Also, work on setting up your board properly before cross stepping. Bottom turn and turn the board to get it traveling up the wave , almost like your trying to get off the wave. Then take your first step and see what happens
I saw a tip of practicing in the white water that is really good. First stall the board with the backfoot, then cross step with the same foot ( back foot) which will accelerate the board. Play with that back and forth ( gas and break pedal)...i think it's gonna solve that problem. Plus it's a great exercise feeling the sweet spot on the wave through your board. White water is underestimated as a learning tool i've come to realize.
Where I live we only have windswell waves so there's a lot of that to choose from ;)
@@williamwettin7376 yes that’s great advice!
@@williamwettin7376 I actually decided to learn to cross step on my surf skate and that helped a lot :)
at my break, there'd be about 15 people trying to get every wave.
Haha! thats gotta be tough. Summer time can get crowded during the day but early mornings are pretty empty here
What board do you use?
Replied in another comment, but for anyone else looking at this I ride a 9'6" COS Chingona
@@LongboardSessions Just contacted Clean Ocean and they are great! I’ll have to save up.
Looks like your getting a lot of speed, try stalling before cross stepping to the nose
This is my problem on front side waves that iv'e noticed. I get to much speed and don't naturally stall like I do a backside!
More examples: instagram.com/p/CKE7htDHCwi/ instagram.com/p/CI4d1MAFW0v/ instagram.com/p/CIrgrpHFpwU/ instagram.com/p/CHu0EhDDxF_/ Thanks for your regularity (posting videos, that is).
Come surf Hawai'i
Oh yea I will hehe
"The key to cross stepping, is properly trimming the board PRIOR to starting your steps". Not exactly, as trimming is going along with the wave no faster or slower than what it is. The secret is waiting for the "LOCK" before taking that first step.
hehe yea that's what I mean. Just got the wording wrong maybe 😉
@@LongboardSessions No, you got the terminology correct for the concept you were thinking. It's your concept that is not quite right yet, but you're getting there. The reason why YOU are cross-stepping better on your back side is you stall more off your heels. While on your front side you are more just picking up your feet. But both ways, you are still not waiting for the "Lock".
@@waikikiki-chan4609 That makes alot of sense why I would cross step better backside. I'll try to lock better this next session.. see how it works out hehe
Legendary advice right here in the comments.
Thumb up just for that dedication ! 5:30am
haha thanks!! However, I do enjoy the early morning sessions😂
Always bring dog food in your back seat.
Got to 🤙

@@jvz773 Sweet! I'd like to take a trip over there soon. Maybe you can show me around
@@LongboardSessions Oh, man, for sure. I’m in Los Angeles. If you find yourself heading out this way, gimme a heads up. I’d be stoked to introduce you to my humble little “home” break, and/or head up to Surfriders in Malibu...world famous long boarding spot 🤙😎
