    Guys, I need your help.
    The channel's subscriber base and especially my views are extremely low, in my opinion.
    For some unidentified reason, HEB seems to be within an algorithmic "limbo" that makes the videos invisible not only to a wider audience but to the channel's own audience.
    On average, only a third of the channel's current subscribers are watching the latest videos, and I really can't understand why.
    Commenting, liking and especially sharing the video will help immensely not only the continuation of this channel but its further improvement.
    So, I kindly request you to help me in this quest of expanding HEB's audience.
    Thank you very much for sticking around and for listening.

    Great video, I love all graphics. A few suggestions to improve:
    - Show a larger overall map at start to show where locations are compared to the whole Greek world. Helps comprehends it all.
    - A little background info on the war, quick catch up on previous battles, where the war stands at this moment.
    - Explain the demographics of who's involved, Ionians, Dorian, Danaans, Macedonians etc.?
    Your style is great and unique to all the other channels, but be great not to neglect the other crucial parts to a good battle video, a nice map, a little background info, who's involved, the purpose of the war etc. explaining it all. Just my opinion.

    • @hocestbellumchannel
      @hocestbellumchannel  Před 3 lety +6

      Thanks for the feedback, and the great suggestions!
      Adding a little background info on the war for each video is certainly good for "standalone" videos, but this series is episodic, so to get the whole picture of the conflict you will probably have to watch the videos from the beginning.
      For newcomers, the "standalone" format is pretty useful, but I went with the "series" format, which is a different "philosophy" when compared to a self-completing video.
      I think I should create a playlist of the series, in chronological order.

      @@hocestbellumchannel fair enough. In that case I would suggest you add something in the video name to let the audience know it is part of a series (ie "greco-Persian wars part x: battle of salamis"). Many of us are used to K&G style of a 10-15min preface before the battle, but your style works just as well if people know what to expect. The down side might be though that people will try to wait for the entire series to come out before watching it... it's what I did with the Ionian revolts :)

    The animation of Themistocles arguing is really well done but the Spartan commander just looked dead inside. My suggestion would've been to make him look like he's pondering or something similar. Although I criticize you on this the animations as a whole are really well done!

    • @hocestbellumchannel
      @hocestbellumchannel  Před 3 lety +5

      That's a detail that actually bothered me somewhat. I could not find any proper usable animation for that, so I would have to create it from scratch, which would have been really time-consuming, so I went with this "idle' expressionless animation.
      The thing is, IF my channel grows appropriately because right now both my views and my subscriber base is really small, this will increase my budget, and with an increased budget, I can then invest in a few gadgets that will allow me to create detailed facial motion captures and maybe even custom animations for whatever instance-situation I need.

    this is why i think you needed more videos[as we talked about before]....i think the algorithm for many starts to ignore channels with low uploads in preference for regular content....maybe have some more content [small and often] to keep the viewers in touch , with a large better quality video every month ? :)

    • @hocestbellumchannel
      @hocestbellumchannel  Před 3 lety +1

      Smaller and more frequent videos is a "maybe".
      But bear in mind that this larger and better quality video every month, literally consumes my entire month to make it...
      So, my best bet is to increase somehow my productivity, which is not going to get significantly better, because then I would need more hours within a day!
      In any case, your feedback is really helpful, and I indeed think of making more and smaller videos.
      I'll probably test this after the next big video.

    Fantastic work! Probably the best animated battle I've ever seen.
    My only issues are:
    1. The narrator making lip smacking noises at the end of a sentence.
    2. It's difficult to tell the ships apart. Perhaps flags mounted on top, purple for the Persians, blue for the Greeks? Otherwise you've got to look closely to tell the difference.
    3. Please show which ships belong to which contingent by highlighting when mentioned.
    4. Give numbers and names in letters(No need to go 3D, just insert text to the video). Otherwise it gets slightly confusing, especially ship numbers and the different greeks.
    Otherwise, unbelievably good! Keep it up!

      I was actually considering making a poll for this exact reason, I was wondering if introducing 2d callouts with Numbers and highlighting formations would have been useful for the audience.
      It adds a bit more work to the overall outcome but nothing that's not manageable.
      I'll certainly test this for the upcoming videos and see if the final product looks nice with 2d layers on top .

    @rdatta Před rokem +1

    Very well done. But there's a glaring issue. The narrative and visualization don't explain why Persian losses were 10:1. Individual ship to ship battles have a problem - it takes time to subdue a ship by boarding. To lose 400 ships in say 10 hours - you have to knock out 40 ships an hour on average - which means that the Persian ships would have to have crumbled under attack. I think there's a deeper explanation in Greek technology (bronze rams that worked to puncture Persian vessels more effectively thereby reducing the need to board vessels) and Greek tactics. Video does a good job of showing some of the tactics but we probably need to realize that Persians with their 3-deep formation may have packed the strait too tightly to maneuver. This would allow Greeks to ram, retreat, shift target and repeat while the Persian front line couldn't rearrange itself. I'm not sure this explains why the Persian 2nd and 3rd lines took such heavy damages. Perhaps the authors could comment.

    ok we get it. The announcer did not want to do the commentating this video, and it sounds like it. this is the most boring and insipid narration I have heard in a while. Great subject, poor presentation.

      So, you didn't like the narration, the animations, the graphics, the directing, or all at once?

    Great video but this narration is awful. This guys voice makes me feel weird. I don't like him at all.

      Feels like he has phlegm or is sick or has doubled the voice or done some weird filter, it's very wrong.

    Lol damn... just a regurgitation of wikipedia huh? Not even a mention of Artemisia? 🙄

    • @hocestbellumchannel
      @hocestbellumchannel  Před 2 lety

      If you consider Herodotus as a "regurgitation of Wikipedia",...
      There were some details that I decided to leave outside the narrative.
      Artemisia did not add anything other than "colour", and her inclusion would have complicated the already complex production process.

      I wasn't trying to retort, though.
