Everything's really cool!
Really promising, but you have some color values issues in the town section @0:37 It's hard to differentiate the different layer elements.
The houses have the exact same color, making them look flat, and the foreground (the part where the enemies and player is) colors are way too similar to the midground/background so they don't stand out as much.
A good trick is to put a very very light layer of "fog" between layers, this can be actual fog or just a very light very low opacity white filter, this gives the image a sense of, let's call it "tridimensionality" that is lacking now.
Another thing you can do to improve the tridimensionality particularly in the trees is to set up a shader that moves them like the wind, like Ori and the Will of the Wisps does, that will save you time animating said leaves.
Really some great and detailed input. I also feel that in some of these platforming areas (like the three areas from 1:00 to 1:07) it feels extremely empty to me, possibly because there are no elements in a foreground layer at all.
I love how this game looks so far, and I don't know how well it would mesh with this hand-painted sort of artstyle, but I wonder if it would help if there were some of parallax layers in the foreground as well?
@@Etholux Yeah, parallax always helps in bringing the tridimensionality thing together. I also feel like the platforms in those sections don't have enough of a colour value difference in those areas isn't great either. Some vapour in the lava section would be nice to get the same effect I mentioned before with the fog and such.
Hollow Knight makes excellent use of both parallax and background fog that makes the playable area stand out more in comparison to the dark platforms themselves, I'm sure these guys are aware of all these tricks to some extent though, since it's clear from what I've seen so far that they're somewhat influenced by what Team Cherry did there.
In my experience though, if you want your environments to feel vast, slow moving parallax layers in the background like mountains or such is the way to go.
Noita does this with flying colours, but the world is _actually_ huge in that game, so yeah. It still conveys vastness really well, though. I noticed they did this with the "lava" part @1:00 somewhat, where they have these caverns in the background, but they don't stand out as much.
To me, it feels like, in that section the path where you're at is all there is. Lava should illuminate the background, not make it pitch black.
Also, the rocks in the background and structures in the background have the same values as well as the same colours, and I think it's due to how they implemented the glow of the liquid. It's like they stamped it uniformly on top of different layers that already were close together in colour values, and that evened it out.
A neat trick for getting this stuff right that works for me is to unfocus your eyes forcefully from the screen. If the screen is out of focus, you should still be able to make out the foreground from the midground, the player, the enemies and dangers that share the midground, and also of course the background. If you can tell them apart in this simulated forced case of myopia, then the colors should be good.
It looks like they have a slight parallax but it's not very defined.
I do love the art but yeah that village is definitely coming off flat. I don't feel the depth. The other backgrounds aren't as bad.
Maybe in the village add more gradients, fog, movement even. Now there is a specific style going on so I'm not sure if using more defined light sources or shadows to define things is the route they'd like to take. A slight blur with less important background areas to help separate layers too.
But I definitely think having a more defined parallax would definitely help. When the characters moving youll get a since of depth by how the layers move.
Past that, I'm excited for this one! Those were people in the background in that one scene so I'm curious to know what's happening and I do love the style they're going for.
I think your analysis is right, but I actually like the flatness of the ambient! It's pretty unique and unreal
I think it is a stylistic choice that reflects the flat style of eastern figurative art. Ever heard about the postmodern style of the "superflat"? I think your advice would be useful if the flatness and the emptyness were not put there on purpose. You are maybe analysing the aesthetic of the game through a too much western view: what to your eyes look as a mistake could be just a style you are not familiar with

I regret that I didn't know about the crowdfund campaign for this game sooner than now. I thought you had fallen off the map after Devotion was removed from most platforms. I'm happy that you guys are still making games despite what happened with that, and Nine Sols looks and sounds beautiful. I'm not really a 2D platformer kind of person, but I sincerely hope this game does well. I just bought Devotion after seeing that it was available on your website, so I can at least support you that way.
Wow! The game looked amazing before, but this trailer is on a whole other level. I'm totally hyped.

Ahhhh I love it! I first discovered you guys through Devotion which really moved me , this game as well looks so interesting!
Work more on platforming animation so it would be more fluid and definitely add more after-effects to each attack and abilty to make it more flashy as well as easily distinguishable from back ground.
How fluid and flashy gameplay feels will make or break this type of games.

I just finished the demo and I just want to say wow.....the story and gameplay are excellent the art/music/setting is extremely captivating, you guys have done a stellar job. I'm super stoked for the release, the only thing that sucks is that I have to wait till Q2 2023....lol rip☠

I played the demo game and would really like to share my impressions and offer some ideas, but unfortunately I did not find a way to do this, except in a comment under your video. I want to note that I really liked your chic visual style and combat. I love Stkiro very much and have been waiting for something similar and of high quality for a very long time, you did it! he only thing I would like to pay attention to, I personally thought that the main character's running animation was not smooth enough, namely, it had few frames. I also missed the up and down strokes a little.
I understand that this is only a demo and the game will still be edited, but I would really like to make this already wonderful game even better! Thank you for your attention, I'll be looking forward to the release.

I played through the demo last night and I'll be keeping an eye on nine sols. With a little polishing and smoothing out the edges this game can become a real hidden gem.
I got hollow knight vibes just by the style mixed with hyper light drifter colors. The background art, the characters' animation... Just... chefs kiss. So far I have loved their other games so will definitely be checking this out. (The creators really are jumping between mediums and genres by each game

DUDE I was already hyped after playing the demo, but the demo seemed pretty light on for exploration and platforming. This trailer hasn't shown much in the way of exploration, but there's definitely some cool-looking platforming now! Hurry up and finish this game I neeeeeeeeeeeeed it.
