Shooting some portraits with the Mamiya C330, Fuji 400H, and Ilford HP5. ❤️🎞 Sleepwalk: sleepwalkltd.c... MERCH: mattdayphoto.com INSTAGRAM: / mattdayphoto
I see that I’m not the only person who says “yeah yeah yeah” 😂 In all seriousness. Great shots man. I enjoyed taking the TLR out this weekend. Been a long time since I shot 6x6.
I once dropped a roll of 120 HP5 while trying to lick the leader, it totally unspooled and exposed everything right after a portrait shoot. I have never been so embarrassed in my life.
The Mamiya C330 is my favorite medium format camera to shoot. I find myself shooting my RB67 more often because I'm always tinkering with it and different backs, but if I just want to shoot some 120 for fun, I'll grab the C330. It's such a lightweight and versatile system.
Bit late to the party but I just want to say i love these shots, particularly the indoor ones with the window light. Niiiice! Interesting to see how you communicate with your model and oh how I wish I had that confidence with my metering! Thank you for sharing
I was thinking the same thing 😂 But i think if he had this shoot done on 35mm we both would be right ;-) I was really impressed by the black and white ones 😲
@@mattdayphoto I pushed hp5+ to 3200 in a museum on 35mm and the shots came out great! I used the internal light meter of my Nikon FG. TriX 400 at 3200 was a different story.
It really depends on the developer you use, I find that TriX is muddy, when I develop with Rodinol, but with anything else it is amazing film. So what developer are you using with HP5 that produces muddy results?
Muddy might have been the wrong word choice. Mostly I mean how the blacks often don't really come with you when you push film, they just stay super dark, which can rob you of detail in the blacks making them, not exactly muddy, but sort of flat and lifeless. But it turns out my film pushing knowledge is limited anyway, haha, so I'll try doing it more, now!
MORE. OF. THIS. This was by far the best documenting a portrait shoot I have ever seen on YT. Awesome to see you shooting it with a TLR as well and it also makes me very excited to try the 120 roll of 400H I have waiting in the fridge...
Really great video, beautiful portraits, it´s an excellent class both for portraiture and TLR photography, very useful for me, as I am about to try my C330 with 105mm lens. Thank you!
Thanks for bringing us along on the shoot! I really enjoyed seeing your process and and picked up not only a lot of tips, but a lot of inspiration as well. I would love to see more videos in this format.
You are a brave man for taking a C330 out on a shoot. I used to put my C330S on a rather nice Berlebach wooden tripod and partnered it with the rare-as-rocking-horse-poo Paramender 3 for shoots. It was an awesome if heavy camera which I still wish I had.
On your last video of the Mamiya 6 , seeing the sharpness of the shots and your enthusiasm I just had to get one ! A bit hard to find at a good price in France but I managed to pull one off and hoping I get the same results as you ! I'm in a low spot in my photographie right now and I hope this will get me boosted again ! thanks for all your simple an human friendly videos !
Great video. I enjoyed seeing you pose the subject. I feel like I've said to "turn a little more but still look at me" 100,000 times in my career so far.
Matt, I really enjoyed this format. It was fun to get to watch the finer points of how you take portraits. I’m glad to hear you are going to do a few more of these.
I sent my first two rolls of HP5 to The Darkroom last week and should have my scans back today, fingers crossed. UGH, I can't wait to see them. My C3 is so much fun to shoot with. Also ordered a 65mm lens. Coming from Japans and should be here tomorrow. Any chance you will do more videos with the Mamiya and other lenses? I would love to see what something like a 135mm or 180mm looks like before I get one of them. Great work, as usual.
I'm curious too about the 180mm.I have the 105mm and it's already gorgeous, but I don't know how different it is from the 80mm.2/3 of a stop of extra light and bokeh would be nice in certain situations, but compositions would be very similar.
I'm really glad and hope you're gonna put more Mamiya C300f content out there, as I love shooting with my older, roughed up C3 so much. Especially portrait sessions. I would love a video specifically about how you're composing in square, maybe portrait composition no matter the format. I really like your videos and style, Matt. Keep it going!
This is great Matt. When you've asked for feedback on what we'd like to see more of, this was my answer, more of your process and results on show. I guess other people asked for the same, thanks for listening. The Fuji 400 looks really nice, super fresh, hopefully this will tempt more folks to look beyond their portra!
Ohh Matt Day, Again a awesome video's its so inspiring to see you take those super b photo's hopefully i can get my guts together to to a shoot one dy too!
This is the content I've been searching for! I'd always wanted to learn more about how to help models post and how you would set your camera in different light conditions. Thank you Matt. Big fan.
Loved this format and I most definitely learned some things when it comes to posing people and just interacting and communicating with them. Great video as always. Can’t wait to see more like this!
I actually did Portraits on Fuji Pro 400h last week and the colors were okay. Shot it at 400 on a overcast day. Also one thing I noticed you did was alot of directions, which is good but sometimes it's good to let the model suggest poses
Very true! Trent told me he's very rarely in front of the camera, so he asked for a lot of direction, but experienced models definitely have their own skillset!
I see that I’m not the only person who says “yeah yeah yeah” 😂
In all seriousness. Great shots man. I enjoyed taking the TLR out this weekend. Been a long time since I shot 6x6.
Seriously did NOT realize how frequently I say that until I was editing this video. y i k e s .
Matt Day I’m right there with you. The more excited I am, the worse it gets. Haha
@@mattdayphoto You should see Irene Rudnyk videos. She's yeahyeahyeahing all the time)
@@mattdayphoto LOL...sounds like you're referencing the band!
Pi DeeDee who is that?
some of my favorite photos ive ever gotten. this video turned out so sick!!!
Thanks for standing in, dude! Let's do it again soon.
far fukn' out, man!
I once dropped a roll of 120 HP5 while trying to lick the leader, it totally unspooled and exposed everything right after a portrait shoot. I have never been so embarrassed in my life.
I really love that you talk through your whole thought process as it's happening, it really helps!
The Mamiya C330 is my favorite medium format camera to shoot. I find myself shooting my RB67 more often because I'm always tinkering with it and different backs, but if I just want to shoot some 120 for fun, I'll grab the C330. It's such a lightweight and versatile system.
I appreciated watching the process you use but also that you told us your exposure settings and why. Some really terrific portraits from this day.
The compositions are so good OMG. You really put the background elements to use. I want to hire you to take my portraits.
the colors are just amazing !
I learned real photography on the C330 and loved it so much I've got a big tattoo of one. You really worked it well!
Thanks!
Where can you buy Matt's confidence when it comes to metering asking for a friend. Photos came out so good dude
mattdayphoto.com seems to be the best spot
Bit late to the party but I just want to say i love these shots, particularly the indoor ones with the window light. Niiiice! Interesting to see how you communicate with your model and oh how I wish I had that confidence with my metering! Thank you for sharing
Matt: "I'm gonna push this to 3200"
Me: "You idiot! The photos will be so contrasty and muddy!"
Matt: *Takes literally perfect photos.*
I was thinking the same thing 😂 But i think if he had this shoot done on 35mm we both would be right ;-) I was really impressed by the black and white ones 😲
Haha, HP5 isn't shook!

The black and white roll is much better!
Superb Matt !
AS USUALLY ! Happy Christmas to YOU and YOUR FAMILY !
film is so much more 'real' it's hard to explain

Great shots! Great video!
im okay with being little late to class to watch a Matt Day video any day of the week !!!
STAY IN SCHOOL! But hey, thanks. :)
You've about got me convinced to get a 330. I shoot 35mm Minoltas and a Rolleicord but this Mamiya is awesome.
Pics are so sharp
Really interesting to see how you interact with your model. Thanks for leaving so much of the interactions in! The shots looked great too.
Oh btw Lomo with envelope tabs?? Mine always have the adhesive, it's just not as nice as Fuji's (too hard to peel apart)
That’s right! I totally blanked on that. Haha
That Fuji adhesive ‘strap’. Nice call out! So much better than anyone else’s. Props, Fuji!
Those portraits are absolutely awesome. You make me want to shoot more portraits in 6x6.
Those HP5-shots looks amazing! Good directing as well, poses had a lot of variation and looked natural.
So nice !
great shots!
Just bought a C330. Very encouraging. Love your channel.
I like using my C330 also. Makes me think more about my compositions.
Loved this, please do more videos with your C330. Still learning to use mine; will now try more shots with the aperture wide open.
You did very well. Sometimes I think I would like to make a vlog and then watching this I realize how much actual work goes into it! Thanks Matt!
And now I want to buy a TLR!! This is amazing!
That Mamiya C330 is sick! Awesome shots.
Loved the fly on the wall style Matt, looking forward to more videos like this!
Really great video, beautiful portraits, it´s an excellent class both for portraiture and TLR photography, very useful for me, as I am about to try my C330 with 105mm lens. Thank you!
This video made my Monday. 😎👍
Yes dude, YASSS! Thank you for taking our criminally underrated beast in the C330f & getting some awesome portraits with it. #c330fgang
Thanks for bringing us along on the shoot! I really enjoyed seeing your process and and picked up not only a lot of tips, but a lot of inspiration as well. I would love to see more videos in this format.
This was a GREAT video. I learned so much. Thank you for posting it and Happy New Year!
One of your videos I've watched the whole way through in a while. Great video, no gear talk, just photos
Really enjoyed this! I love seeing how you got to each pose both in terms of coaching the posing and your positioning.
Well done, nice work on the portraits! 👏 gotta love f2.8 on 6x6 film!
damn those shots look amazing! just received my bronica EC , excited to start going out and shooting 120 film again
These are professional quality portraits.

Super cool to see your process dude! Really nice new video format 👌🏻
I see this is an old video but hey, can we see more of this sort of stuff please? This is fantastic!
I love this type of video. Keep it up Matt!

Stunning portraits. WOW!
I really like the black and white portraits.
it's snowing and yall dressing like its fall lmao 😂😂
Midwest life. Haha.
Those black and white shots were killer great video Matt
Thank you!
Really awesome video! I always love your content but loved to see the interaction, the metering, thought process on settings, etc. Fabulous!
The falloff on the close up shots with the 80 2.8 is just gorgeous! Really great stuff
Loved this! More please!! Thanks Matt
Excellent video as usual! Makes me want to get out with my C330. Liked the immediate photos following each shot - the illusion of instant photography!
Great video. I enjoyed seeing you pose the subject. I feel like I've said to "turn a little more but still look at me" 100,000 times in my career so far.
Matt, we expect more of such videos from you...♥
well done. I like the portraits. good directing
Great work as always Matt!!
I take this video as a reference for portrait photography. Thank you!
I keep looking at the C330 and the C220 on eBay and wondered if I could cope with it. One thing I noticed here is how big the camera is, it's huge!
Sadly, they just discontinued Fuji 400H. One of my favorite stocks.
Matt, I really enjoyed this format. It was fun to get to watch the finer points of how you take portraits. I’m glad to hear you are going to do a few more of these.
Awesome stuff. 👍🏼
So good! I wish I was playing a yeah yeah yeah drinking game. 😃
That was awesome!

@@arcp_ The brokeh on the 135 is neat in that you almost get a circular pattern surrounding the subject.

great video matt, amazing pics! more like this would be cool yeah
great great shots man.. loved the video! 👊🏼
Loved it Matt!!
Got me itching to shoot something on my lubitel this week. 6x6 looks awesome for this style of portraits
nice work man!
made me nostalgic for a couple decades ago when I was shooting lots of film [fashion and portraiture] on my old RZ 67 Pro II -
Third photo is 🔥🔥🔥🔥!
Loved the video and the photos!
Great shots
Ohh Matt Day, Again a awesome video's its so inspiring to see you take those super b photo's hopefully i can get my guts together to to a shoot one dy too!

Yes, please - more stuff like this.
I like how you interact with the model. Nice pics!!!
Loved the video Matt!
Awesome...great portraits!
Awesome photos and video : )
It’s very nice to be able to see the process of posing a subject and the method you use for portraiture.
Loved this format and I most definitely learned some things when it comes to posing people and just interacting and communicating with them. Great video as always. Can’t wait to see more like this!
I think you are washing out the tones at 2 stops over, but they looked good. Just would have liked to see it shot at 400 or even 200.
Was looking for someone to comment this. I don't really understand why you would always over expose by two stops? The film is 400 for a reason?
I actually did Portraits on Fuji Pro 400h last week and the colors were okay. Shot it at 400 on a overcast day.
Also one thing I noticed you did was alot of directions, which is good but sometimes it's good to let the model suggest poses

Nice video. What lens was used 85mm or 105mm ?
Matt this was great more videos like this please!
Hey Matt, so you metered for 100 to overexpose the Fuji 400. Did you tell your processor to develop it at 100 or 400?
Wondered the same (and for the ilford too)
