  • President Paul Kagame has spearheaded a remarkable rebuilding effort in Rwanda following the 1994 genocide that killed nearly 1 million people. He is credited with healing the country and producing an economic miracle. But his re-election in 2017 was not without critics. After more than two decades in power, is Kagame's political longevity his worst enemy?
Bigger Than Five Host Ghida Fakhry sat down with President Kagame in Doha.

When our only choice is to sing glories to Kagame, or else suffer the lethal consequences of it, what else are you going to hear from us Rwandans??
Don't believe the hype. The truth inside the country is much different than what they would have you believe.
Did you say that Kagame stops the West from plundering? He is actually their biggest facilitator in that crime. He simply knows how to speak the language of a Pan-Africanist, while oppressing, killing us and keeping us hostage. Mobutu-style.
As for that country's reputation and image you have heard of for years (statistics included), please know the West has conducted that exact same scenario with the former dictator Habyarimana; western powers praised him and said Rwanda was "peaceful and politically stable thanks to his leadership". In the meantime, they killed people every couple of years. They used to call Rwanda the "Switzerland of Africa". Under Kagame, they call it the "Singapore of Africa". The statistics have now been proven by independent researchers to be highly manipulated and fabricated (somthing us Rwandans have known for a long time).
Its the same old lies. Only the killer's face has changed.
For example, would you believe it if I told you that thousand of survivors of the Genocide against the Tutsi have been murdered by Kagame over the years? Of course you wont. Not if you are forced to believe the media PR paid for by Kagame since he came to power.
The truth of our suffering under this tyrant has been hidden for too long, with the criminal complicity of the West.

@Ghida_Fakhry, He didn't pledge to leave, those are your words not his. You started the program with that as your byline and though its a bit harsh, I also believe that you are correct to push this byline with 9 out of 10 presidents that you might interview who are already beyond their second term. But with Paul, perhaps we have the one exception, not my opinion but that of the Rwandans.
When you concluded this interview, you went back to your first question about will he run again.
His first words leaned strongly towards indecisiveness until you pushed him and he admitted that personally he liked to keep his options open "but at the moment was leaning towards a negative or no".
You then tried to nail him on that "no", even though he indicated to you that he has no "black and white" decisive answer at the moment. So, my question to you is, as a highly eloquent well spoken interviewer why do you then try to put words in the mouths of those that you are interviewing.
Stop trying to pin him to something that may not be in the best interests of the country, even if this same thing has in truth been the best thing for many other African countries that were static and not moving forward with any speed. He has done a great job so far and is continuing along that path. His people love him and his push for transparency is near unparalleled amongst his peers. He hasn't just pushed, he has computerized and made bids publicly available electronically, which is more than we can say for 95% of this planet.
And perhaps I can explain in English a different way than Paul did while under your steady gaze. Corruption can start in a person from as young as 4-5 years old. They see that paying a little money under the table, they can get something that was previously denied, so they do it and don't see it as a right or wrong per se. So, it's nearly impossible to entirely stamp this out.
However, what you fail to recognize is that Paul Kagame has brought his people together and they look out for each other, quite literally. You don't drop tissue or gum on the street because... the fourth Saturday of every month, you will be out there to clean it up, so you just don't drop it at all. In Singapore, security will force you to pick it up.
Everyone who can, comes out and works together to clean garbage, street gutters and other public works each fourth Saturday. Everyone is happy, smiling and having a good time working together, including Paul Kigame himself. And that is the key - peer based community spirit with visible leadership doing the same work. When it is not Saturday, try to drop something on the sidewalk and see if the combined peer pressure of all who see you, don't make you want to stoop, pick it up and find a garbage. When an entire community works for the good of all, that community is slowly seeding the antithesis of corruption into the very thread and behavioural fabric patterns of each individual in the entire community. The impossible then becomes slightly more of a possibility.
At the moment, Rwanda is a model for many other African countries and its a dynamic model that is not merely expanding at 7-8% growth but truly expanding with computers for youth in public schools and widening of the knowledge base in a way that can be the base for future non-linear growth. Several other countries like Singapore and South Korea did this "skip the manufacturing and go straight to service based economies". Their GDP per capita numbers are through the roof.
What other African rulers are doing this? Are there as many as 3 more like Paul Kagame? As an interviewer, try not to close your mind and try not to stay tunnel visioned on what you wrote on the paper, yes we think we saw when you wrote it.
Open your ears and listen to the Rwandans themselves. Is Paul perfect? Hell no, but that just means he is human and will make mistakes, but he has a near perfect record over the past decade or two? Don't ask me, leave Qatar or Doha and go into the streets of Kigali and talk to peoples from all walks of life. If 9 out of 10 don't love this man then maybe the voting polls were wrong.
I have seen this informal poll done several times. Several Africans from other nations visited and asked students, taxi drivers, street vendors and others. Overwhelmingly foreign women students of all ages declared one of the biggest differences between Kigali and their own countries was that at any time of the night, they felt safe, safe, safe walking the streets of Kigali. Some, while answering the poll questions were so enthused, they couldn't stop praising a president that wasn't even theirs.
If peace is the foundation and desire is the engine and the government nurses the ambitions of its people with tangible positive results, who then can stop them? Who would even want to?
