      Hereditary. I hated it. It was prentious and none of the horror scenes felt like they fit into the movie. It was just an overrated drama that has cliche horror elements.

    Wow I’m surprised at your rating of last night in soho. I didn’t think about the social message of the film at all while watching it. I just kept remembering how boring most scary movies are and how hard it is to make an iconic atmosphere that’s not over done. It was really good! Less signature Edgar camera work but it seems like he was using his style to tell a compelling story and take you on a ride. Oh well. I loved it.

    • @erikdaniels0n
      @erikdaniels0n Před 2 lety +55

      I thought that the cinematography was really good, and the components (lighting, costume and set design, etc.) went a long way to create an unsettling atmosphere. I DID pick up on the social message, and I loved that it took a different approach to the type of horror movie it was (a social horror ala Jordan Peele but swap out racism for sexism).

    • @Numberoneiosgameplay
      @Numberoneiosgameplay Před 2 lety +36

      I also quite liked it, I still have some complaints with the 2nd half but overall I just thought it was a really fun watch, probably a 4/5 from me. I find it a bit concerning though with Wright recently, he seems to have forgotten how to write a good ending. Everyone and their mother gives Baby Driver 5/5's but that movie's ending isn't all that great either, so why are so many other people hating on this one? Maybe it's just astronomical expectations being let down.

    • @thesexyshark1646
      @thesexyshark1646 Před 2 lety +8

      I don’t know, I didn’t really find the story all that compelling. I didn’t find it at all thrilling, even though it’s a horror. I also didn’t care all that much about the characters, I didn’t feel emotionally attached. I also found it to be extremely predictable, none of the twists or plot points surprised me. I thought the cinematography was good. But the story wasn’t, at least for me personally.

    I disagree with your take on Last Night in Soho. I found myself relating to the main character. The lighting, use of colour and sound felt actually pretty well done. I didn’t think the social commentary was that abrasive. If anything it may have been redundant. But I enjoyed her exploration and longing for a girl who she wants to be.
    My friends and I specifically chose it because we’ve seen a “Halloween like movie” every damn year and we wanted something different. This was a great choice

      It was a 9.5 for me, one of my favorites. I really disagree with his take and this is actually one of the films that didn’t put feminism in your mouth, he didn’t make her “boyfriend” a terrible guy he made him really sweet but showed an accurate take on what the 60s were like for performers, it wasn’t like girl power all the way I thought everything about it was incredible I won’t get too much into it though

    Memoria is my film of the year. As I left the theatre, it seemed like everything had changed somehow, you enter a kind of trance-like state while watching this film. For me - as the title says - it's about memory, both individual and collective, explored through sound. These are the best films of that month in my opinion:
    1. Last Night In Soho: 8.5/10
    Are bad CGI ghosts overused? Absolutely. Do it's jump scares work? No. However, Edgar Wright's film is an unnerving and deeply personal allegory that concerns nostalgia, social isolation, and the artistic process is nearly perfect.
    2. Dune: 8/10 (tie)
    A perfect Dune film. The only obvious flaw is the sometimes distractingly awkward (if necessary) delivery of exposition.
    2. The French Dispatch: 8/10
    A film where a genius film director's vision is completely unrestrained and unfettered. It is slightly inaccessible and niche, but it is also refreshing to see something this artistically daring in 2021 (especially in a mainstream theater). I also adored its homage to the French New Wave and Godard specifically.
    3. The Last Duel: 7/10
    The acting is superb, the set pieces are impeccably designed and use only lightly utilize computer-generated visual effects. However, the Rashomon-style story is flawed in its execution from both a writing and pacing perspective.

    Honestly, the viewing of Dune I enjoyed the least was the IMAX one (my second viewing out of three), but that's only because whoever set up the audio in the auditorium had no idea what they were doing. The bass was way too low and the highs distorted in my ear canals. The other two times I watched it I was in one of Landmark Cinema's Laser Ultra auditoriums and it was incredible. Really crisp laser projection, and more importantly, Dolby Atmos set up my someone with human ears. I finally brought some friends out to it last night and they were just as enamoured at it as I was on my first watch.
    I can't believe it took me a week from my first viewing to find Sardaukar throat singing on CZcams. It changed my life when I saw it (or dare I say, felt it) for the first time. SO glad someone did a 1-hour extended version. Absolutely mesmerizing

    Nah that Last Night in Soho take is a violation, the first half of that movie is probably some of the most engaging film making I've ever seen. I was so fascinated with the whole atmosphere Wright creates with the costume design, setting, lighting etc. However, I don't think the second half is as strong but that could be due to the whole deconstruction of the world that we find so dazzling in the beginning.

    Good list. But I don't think Last Night in Soho deserved a whole segment of hate. Definitely had at least some good things going for it in my opinion, overall I liked it. But that's just me, still great video!

    What I watched this month
    No Time to Die- 5/5. What an incredible sendoff for Craig’s Bond.
    Dune- 6/5. An epic in every sense of the word. Everything, from the set and costume design to the cinematography to the score to the acting was pitch perfect. Can’t wait for Part 2
    Last Night In SoHo- 4/5 or 4.5/5 (I haven’t fully decided). I understand why this film is so divisive for people, but I really loved about 90% of this. But, I will say that I’ve haven’t been THIS conflicted on how I feel about a film in a long time. I have to respectfully disagree with your take on the movie, Karsten, but I understand where you’re coming from. Everything was really working for me up until the twist, which kind of worked for me, but also really didn’t at the same time.
    The French Dispatch- 4/5. A ton of this movie really worked for me, especially the first two segments/stories and the Owen Wilson on a bike bit, but the third segment kind of lost me. It still got some chuckles out of me, but it didn’t land as well as the first two segments did. Still in my top 5 Wes movies though

    I agree with you on Dune (1984). Saw it this week and even if the movie is seriously flawed (no wonder why David Lynch doesn't want to talk about it), the effort put to create such a distinct world by his cast and crew is quite remarkable. It's an interesting watch.
