  • To repent for his absence and abbreviated Ruminant, Jonah bequeaths listeners a special live episode, featuring American Enterprise Institute all-stars Chris Stirewalt and Yuval Levin. Together, the trio conducts a presidential debate post-mortem. Is it finally time for the Democratic Party to face the music? Have we reached the endgame of a nightmare political era? What is a golf handicap? Topics outside debate-gate include the Supreme Court verdict in Loper Bright Enterprises v. Raimondo, George Washington’s basement crypt in the Capitol, and the dangers of ultra-transparent governance.

There should be a constitutional amendment that says no one over seventy can be president.

I'm not certain of what the age limit should be, but I certainly would like them for president, vice-president and Congress. In NJ, state judges must retire when they celebrate their 70th birthday. I think this policy of retiring judges before they age too much and bringing in new blood has served the state well.

Thank you, guys. It's always refreshing to hear thoughtful discussion - and questions - from thoughtful people.
Circumspection isn't as fun or rewarded as tabloid food fights these days, but its being in the mold of our enlightenment founders gives us hope that we can rescue their vision from what all the tribes have devolved into today.

Some of it is criminal fraud, no doubt, on the part of his most inner circle. But I imagine for most democrats it was a combination of self-deception (they’re all cheap fakes!) and a lack of willingness to acknowledge his short comings due to the all-mighty “incumbent advantage”. I’m a democrat (probably won’t be after this), and I was genuinely shocked and horrified by this debate. I had no idea that he was really in that condition. We were lied to by mainstream media. Over and over and over again.

1:01:00 It's an "unkindness of ravens"
The usual explanation is the association of ravens with bad luck but most of these "adjective of animal" actually mainly come from the first dictionary maker Dr. Johnson who had a tendency to make up words on a whim. My favourite example is "Backfriend, noun: A friend backwards; that is, an enemy in secret." That was almost certainly never a word before or since and saw its one use in the first dictionary.
With the types of animal construction, he clearly tried to relieve the boredom by making them up so we have "Smack Of Jellyfish", a "coalition of cheetahs" and all the rest. And in a tradition that lasts to this day, if it's written in a dictionary that, to many people, makes it correct English. Rather than the dictionary being an effort to document English usage as lowly linguists insist. We know he got bored because he defined dull as " "Dull, adjective: Not exhilarating; not delightful: as, to make dictionaries is dull work." and "Lexicographer, noun: A writer of dictionaries; a harmless drudge, that busies himself in tracing the original, and detailing the signification of words."
Ironically, because people take dictionaries as gospel, then these absurd made up phrases entered the lexicon and are so actual features of the English language.

*America* lost the debate. *Neither Trump nor Biden* is fit to serve as President. They should *both* step aside. Trump put his own desire for power above the country's best interests on Jaunuary 6, 2021, by lying about losing the election and encouraging a riot at the Capitol. Biden is putting his desire for power above the country's best interests, now, by not dropping out of the race.
