And the mere idea that a citizen could just resign by post from the USSR to get out ... like if it was that easy they wouldnt have much use for the wall. several million people died from famine and persecution when they could have all just written letters and I guess the soviet social structure wouldn't apply to them?

Ridgerunner21, what did you think of the quotes Kennedy read from Omarova's own papers (written in the last two years) in which she proposed nationalizing all bank accounts , bankrupting our fossil fuel companies, and having the federal government set wages, gas, and food prices? It was impossible to resign from being a Komsomol or any other youth organization in USSR. If you actually had a mental capacity to do that, you'd be under KGB radar 24/7. For literally anything. I remember tearing off the USSR star badge from the chest of my classmate (by accident), and my parents were called to school for investigation, questioned as if they were the enemies of the country. After that, my dad kept like a dozen of those star badges in the drawer - just in case anyone of his children did the same again. It was a running joke in our house ten years after USSR collapsed.
In a soviet regime, there was no freedom to refuse. Either you did as asked, or you were the enemy of the country. Or in jail. That senator is dreaming flowers about USSR.
