I'm 70 and there is no way I could do this but I enjoy your videos. You both have wonderful personalities. I always had a small vegetable garden and love my flowers. I have disabilities now that prevent me from this way of life. Therefore I watch you two and enjoy your life along with you.

I paid off my 30 year mortgage in 8 years and 3 months. Took in some friends and charged them rent. Worked any over time that was offered. Love seeing someone who thought live me. Making those triple payments was addicting. I actually looked forward to the bill. Paid off in 1998. Love my home will stay here.
We are right at 9 years and ready to be paid off in December. God is good!
My husband and I just paid our house off just the other day. So exciting. And we have been buying grocery’s once a month for years. It’s funny when you go to the store and someone says something like why all the grocery’s and we tell them we only buy once a month or less. Their face expression is priceless.
I hate shopping anyway, But there’s other items you need besides food so you still have to shop some.

You two are such an inspiration! My husband and I are only 20 years old and will be buying our own piece of land in Arkansas (we live in Texas) by the end of the year! He is the only one working and he only works at Wal-Mart! It's possible if you make it and if you have the passion to be self-sustainable! We collect rain water, grow and raise food, and have solar electricity. Great video! It's good to have people to look up to! ☺☺

I am still part part part-time homesteading. Lol Still working 50 hours a week job, but paying debt off, and we have a small "learning" garden plus a couple of hens. You both are so motivating, thank you for that extra push we all needed today.
Hubby and I are of retirement age (65 and 58) and homesteading isn't in our future due to health constraints on my part BUT I found this video so helpful. It's always wise to be frugal and spend less even if you're not a homesteader! We're definitely not big spenders but still have a mortgage (ugh) Oh, how much simpler our lives would be if that mortgage were gone. You've made me determined to work harder to eliminate that darned bi-weekly payment. Kudos to you both for your wise decisions. Your step by step planning has set you up for success in all areas of your life and it's giving your girls wonderful lessons that will echo throughout their own lives. Well done!!
One thing I like about your homestead is the quality of your infrastructure like your fences and buildings. And the way your garden is so very well organized. The fact that you were, and still are, willing to forgo all the luxuries and to realize they aren't necessary is commendable. My husband and I still live an urban life but we did downsize because we realized that big house just wasn't necessary. All that really matters is family, after all. I am not a homesteader but would have loved to do it when younger. My wife and I are a bit too old to delve into homesteading today. I have been following your channel for a while now and love to see how you are doing all this. I always tried to plan how we live and live the plan and it works. We have been debt free for many years. That alone has been so very satisfying. Old Dave Ramsey has it right and we did that sort of thing before Dave and it works!!!

Being debt free is the best feeling my husband and I did it 30 years ago and can live retired not wealthy but without worries.

Where in Canada? We are near Sault Ste Marie, and the area up here is fantastic. Communities are very supportive, land is cheap and plentiful.

This was great. We are now retired from teaching and 65 and 66 years old. We retired with our pension in our early 50s due to the stress and strain of the changing educational system. We were able to get rid of our house debt before. That was a key. We were raised by depression era parents who knew frugal living and transferred that to us. We definitely as teachers knew how to live below our means as well. Even though we don't homestead animals we have raised beds and more native fruit trees as we try to grow as much as the Austin, Texas, sun allows. We try to live a suburban semi-homestead lifestyle although we found it more financially feasible to buy our meat, eggs and veggies we don't grow from the farmers market. We also joined the local co-op to supplement our groceries. I love making our meal from scratch as well as watching your videos to learn how to make items such as rolls, tortillas, flatbread, etc. Our dear parents are all gone now but unknown to us they were always savers and each set left us a small amount of money. We didn't take the fancy vacation or spent wildly. We paid off any debt we did have as well as renovated the items on our two lot "homestead" that needed repairing. We've been totally debt free for the past 5 years and have the means to take care of all the living responsibilities you two mentioned. This was important to do as we will age in to this home and land. Thank you for your wisdom and lesson that are a continual joy to take part in on a daily basis. In fact, what you guys did sounds exactly like the plan we made so now I know it really can work! In about 5 years we hope to be living our dream of a self sustainable, simple life. 😊

The well thought out plan you followed is the difference between success and failure! So many young couples just dive in head first and they set themselves up for failure. This is such a wonderful lifestyle...if we were starting now in our late sixties and early seventies we couldn’t do it ,we would never have been able physically to get everything established. Best to start when you’re young!
My family has been at homesteading for about 7 years. We are your age, and although we rent a 15 acre home with a creek. We are as close to dept free as we can afford. Renting has it perks over owning, and we happen to be in a situation were the home is basically ours to do what we wish. The rent is capped at a very low price. I would say 70 percent under the norm these days. We don't have an overhead to worry about for home repairs. I work for myself doing renovations, which has it's perks. I do not work full time and the schedule is mine to make up that reflects around my homestead. I also bonus a lot of free items from jobs that otherwise would cost mega dollars and require me to work more to earn that dollar.
It is a fine balance, that I have found, I don't chase the dollar, my time is spent living and not just giving. Our homestead grows more and more every year. We feed ourselves from our land for the entire year. Frugal is one word to describe it. I like to use the word smarter. So even though I do rent and still work. The rent is very low and the work is when I want it to be for what ever period of time I choose it to be.
From maple syrup and apple cider to pork, chicken and homemade spices, we take a little extra from each little harvest. Sell, barter or trade it, and put that towards the next item. Circling the money forward until eventually there is no out of pocket cost. Just the same money going around and around.
Life is what you make it, I am glad to see you two have made it your own. Cheers from the North!
You guys are so right. Being debt free is so important. When you are loaded down with debt you have no or few options. You are a slave to the debt. I pray this will encourage many to follow your example.

You two are so darn cute. What a different in living area. I'm from Missouri and at 66 have NO desire to move back. Your right, had we started 20or 25 years ago maybe we would do things differently. I am retired and I know me, if I tried to make my homestead an income maker I would burn out. Hubby has about 10 more years to work.
I worry that we may be FORCED to change our lifestyle. Unforeseen things do happen and that can be catastrophic to an unprepared family.
@@wildflower746 yes, your spot on. Things can go bad at anytime. That's why we are preppers. When I was a child on a farm, it wasn't looked at as "prepping". It was everyday life, as it still is in a farm. We are leaving California because things are getting so out of control here.
Granny Preppers im leaving the city life to return to nature. It has been calling to me for 4 years now and i am finally ready to make the move. I am a country girl getting back to my roots. Call it survival instinct. I want to get situated before i get too old. I have such a strong desire to pass along skills to my children but unfortunately they see no need and that worries me. I can only hope they come to me when times get difficult.

Love Dave Ramsey. The Jones are 1 or 2 paychecks away from broke folks, so stop trying to keep up with them. I know people who are in huge debt and yet they keep buying more. I would not be able to sleep at night living that way. No debt for us - used all the way. My best purchase ever was an $800 car that lasted us 10 years. Looked like something you would find in a junkyard, but what a great engine. Financial freedom is wonderful.
I love cheap reliable auto mobiles. minimal insurance, no payments. Keep up with the basics and save thousands over what people with the car payment and other associated headaches experience. My newest vehicle is a 02 Camry.
Love your story! We were living with a mortgage and two car payments and had some credit card debt as well..approaching retirement age, we knew that we could not continue to live in that area on social security...so I got a refinance of our current mortgage and borrowed against the equity in the house and lowered our payment about 200.00 per month and the equity money paid off the credit cards. Hubby had a big fancy truck and the payment on that alone was more than the house payment. As luck would happen, a friend totaled her truck which was identical to ours...she hauled horses to shows, etc. so we made the offer, she bought the truck and we were able to pay off that loan and have a enough left over to buy a lesser truck 3/4 ton used and no payment! We put our house up for sale by ourselves - no realtor commission. That took a painful long time and we did lose some of what we expected but decided to take the loss and move on. We had purchased our land the year before and then bought our home (a nice mobile home). So long story, we had to make several large purchases from our sale of the home for this new homestead...we divided the money into categories as to how much to spend on what items...we just had our storm shelter installed a couple days ago...that was the last big cost we had to have here...so now, we have 27 acres and our hopes and dreams beginning on raising as much of our own food as possible. We took the advice not to go nutty on planting everything possible. Starting out small on only the items we love to eat...we have layer hens that bring us 8 eggs a day which is more than we can use, so we do share our bounty with neighbors...we just bought 8 cornish cross hens and plan to keep getting those to add to our meat as well as the rabbits we have purchased. It is our dream and yes, we do get ss money but it isn't a lot...so yes being frugal is imperative! Thank you both so much for all the information and energy and excitement as we share your dream as well!
I enjoyed this. I am 53 & wanting to quit driving semi truck for the last 22yrs. Have finally paid the house off & working to payoff pickup then it's fixing up the house . quit driving and work part time & start full time homesteading. I live by myself. So only wage earner.

My husband and I do not have the "stomach" to raise our own meat. We try to support local and organic meat farms. We do raise our own veggies, herbs, garlic and onions. You are an inspiration to people who want to live naturally and healthy!

Awesome Story! My husband and I are in the process of moving out onto 5 acres. My husband will continue to work from home, but also help out where he can. We have been following Dave Ramsey's advice for over 15 years and are completely debt free and plan to stay that way.

Great plan! Failure is not having a plan. Long story short...we married and moved to 2 acres, big house, awesome pool, his/hers buildings. 2 raised beds for our 1st ever gardening. We expanded the garden and did really well. Fast forward, empty nest...sell and move back to the city in the same size house only. Planted a lot on our place there. We found in a 2 week period that the city was NOT where we wanted to be. We planned our exit. We sold while the market was great and bought our property here with a small mortgage. Mike still leaves to work every day. In 4 yrs we have worked together to build up infrastructure, orchard, lots of garden types and all kinds of berries, herb gardens. Anyway we set our goal with Dave Ramsey's quote! We also budget and are frugal!! We doubled down on the mortgage and in 23 months we will be paid off! It's hard to do, not financially but with 1 of us off the homestead, but still doable. We save and are tweaking some things that we wouldn't have known about had we not been here for a few years. We have 2 greenhouses going up and plan to market garden next year. At retirement we should have so much harvest in so many different crops and starts that we feel we will do well. We still do the envelope system and it's great! Retirement to us means being ready to work more in the gardens etc and not building the area. Love y'alls channel and story. God bless ❤ edit: We have a saying at the end of each day "We are 1 day closer" We also say "We are 1 week closer" at the end of the month we say "Only _____ months to go"..We are starting a Calendar to cross off the days and then a big X across the month.

Without the visualization it can become very discouraging
when setting goals...
The same holds true when we set big goals which can seem
like we’ll never reach them.
This is why taking big goals and breaking them down into smaller,
easier and faster obtainable ones helps not only to make the process
seem to go by faster but also easier to achieve...

Thanks for sharing! We have the same mindset and just turned 40. Sold the expensive $300k house and mortgage, took a small loss, and are working to pay off our debt. We have our land, but will be building our house, hopefully mortgage free. It is definitely hard digging out of debt, but it can be done.
My wife and I are gonna be 63 in a couple of months. We’re both 100% service connected disabled veterans. Health issues over the last 38+ years kind of forced the homesteaders lifestyle on us. I don’t regret it for a second but I have to admit that it’s been ANYTHING but easy. Now that I’m getting older I can actually see the benefits of the lifestyle that I didn’t recognize before. I spend virtually nothing, except for the mortgage and usual monthly bills. I could only afford the mortgage because I spent my life avoiding debt like the plague. I save as much as possible. Life is a dynamic beast that gives little warning and those savings, while small, have saved our bacon repeatedly. Thanks for the excellent advice!

As always...such a fantastic video! With my job I am so time poor that it is hard to do anything extra after work. It doesn't help that my husband and kids are not on board with any of this so I get no help from any of them. But I am working on getting my skills down so I can add little by little to my skills and the hopefully eventually...my income. Thankfully I am debt free but I still live paycheck to paycheck because my grocery bill is astronomical. With watching you guys I have learned so much on making things from scratch and preserving that I've been able to trim down the grocery bill a bit and am working on saving. I can't thank you two enough for these videos.
Laurie, one of the great things I like about watching homesteading videos is that I can glean off of them ideas for our own life here in urban (Memphis, TN) for now. My husband and I are older and could not do homesteading the way many younger folks do but you can start a garden, howbeit small, medium or large. You can start preserving your own food in your own kitchen, maybe one day down the road you might get that place where you can have some chickens or whatever you want, you don't have to imitate exactly and I do so appreciate much of the information that many of these homesteaders share on their channels. I love the idea that even here in urban life I can work on minimizing my life, possessions, expenses and even tap into some of the values and ways of the homesteading life!
@@chattingwithu I can and garden (elevated on a cement slab) and simply started making everything from scratch. I will probably never have animals even if I had a space for them. It's just not something I even desire to have or do. But I love watching their animal videos (and other homesteaders) with the way they raise them. I do plan on researching places locally to source my dairy and meat from. I recently started making my own kombucha and want to start fermenting veggies. My biggest battles are my bad back and lack of time. For the most part I only have weekends to get anything done but if I do too much I can't move the next day.
Laurie Christine I hear you! I did no gardening last summer as I had two hip replacements between July and November! But I too have been talking about where else can I get my dairy and meat from besides the grocery store - where do you even begin to do that? My son in law told me there are families that go in together to have farmers raise a cow for them then at the proper time the meat is processed for the families! I would not no where to even begin finding that! Just started reading about Kombucha!
@@chattingwithu Sorry to hear about the hip replacements. No garden for me last year either because of my back. This is why I decided to elevate the beds on plywood on saw horses I built thanks to Kevin's video so I don't have to bend over. As for meat...I've found a few places on line in my state that I can get from 1/4 cow to a whole one...but I need to convince my husband into buying a freezer. His thing is...where are we going to put it. We live in a small townhouse. I know where I want to put it but I need to get that area cleaned out but again...time is an issue for me. This is why I said...eventually. LOL

Thank you :-) Now it`s up to patience, the raised beds are ready, but it is to cold, and wet, very unusually for March here in Denmark, but i hope spring is just around the corner :-) My potatoes which i planted indoors are allready 30 inches tall, and they really looking forward to get out into the new garden :-) God bless

Thanks for this video. It really just reinforced my plan and that I was on the right track. I rent my tiny town apt and am paying 3x of my land payments, getting debt free and learning as much as possible so I can get to my Alaskan homestead property (Serenity Woods) and not set myself up for failure. Thanks again for all your videos.
This is awesome! We are on a similar path. We are debt free, don’t spend a lot of money, and are working on our skills so we will be ready to homestead. We just bought raw land and are going to slowly develop it into our homestead. Not sure if we will be able to quit our jobs and full time anytime soon, but we are working on our long term goal of living a more sustainable lifestyle. Been enjoying your channel and learning lots!

You are wonderful to follow. You are such a nice couple who support each other. As a retired professor, I am so glad you made this video because a lot of people read a couple of living off the land magazines and make a quick move. Of course, 99% of the time, they fail. So, hearing this will reinforce what they should be thinking about. Anyone should get out of debt. It is like being in prison.
Groceries are in the larder, root cellar, or wherever the person puts it and then you go shopping at home. I also recommend actually gardening if you plan to grow your own food. i.e. are you aware that snakes of all kinds like to visit your homestead, that chickens will destroy your gardens without proper fencing, that foxes love chickens (in the wrong way), etc etc. That you might have bears, coyotes, too. I am not trying to scare anyone, just get them to thinking about if this is really what they want to do.
Are you healthy and fit and careful, make a plan so you will stay that way.
You focused on your business plan, but your physical, emotional, spiritual, etc fitness also need to be in place.
In my situation being a retired professor, you can't believe the number of retired professionals that have asked me why in the world I live on a farm? I find that hurtful. Where do they think their food comes from? What connection do they have to nature and their land? etc?
Anyway, also I used to work for Medicaid with mostly the elderly and disabled of all ages who needed full time care. Design your property (no matter how big or small) and your home so accidents are avoided as much as possible and try to have a one story home or plans to put a BR and Bath on the first floor if any family member might need it. I am 76 with disability, but still have my chickens and service dog and a small garden that is enough for me. And, I can still take my Mule out and run my dog and enjoy my farm. It is quiet and healthy and people here in Appalachia live long due to sheer independence of thought and ingenuity born of years of making do with what is available - no big malls here. So, I like it when you said how you challenge yourselves to save even more money.

I am so happy for your family. I wish we had moved to a homestead twenty years ago. We hope to do it in retirement, within five years once our youngest is out of college. Getting rid of the debt burden is so freeing, and opens up life to so many possibilities. We were able to get rid of our debt, except our mortgage, several years ago. It changes your perspective from what has to be done to what can be done... You bless my day every morning. Thanks. 🥰

This is great. You never know when or even if there might be a time when no more grocery stores. People need to learn to survive. Not every one ( some do ) can survive if they had too because most but not all know how or want to learn. Love you're channel. Blessings to you and you're family.

I have followed Dave Ramsey for 6 years. I guess I should begin at the beginning. My husband died and for a couple years I shut down. That was 6 years ago. My children saw how I was failing and my budget was nonexistent. So my son took over my money. At first I didn’t like it as I felt like a failure, as time went on I realize it was a good thing. My son put me on a budget that Dave Ramsey had set up and I have followed Mr. Ramsey now for 6 years. It’s Ben a breath of fresh air to be debt free. I love watching you, I’m unable to do what you all do as I m a senior lady but I grew up on a farm and loved it. Thanks guys for sharing!

we have been working to our dream of homesteading for 4 years now . it required hard work and determination . there were many low points , we have now moved to another country (Spain from UK) and have bought our house . its smaller than I imagined but it has potential , we need to buy more land but there is land for sale bordering ours , we just need to carry on working for one /2 more years and we will finely have what we dreamed . most important thing I would suggest is to actually do something , stop the dreaming and make real steps toward the dream goal . good luck everyone , anything is possible with hard work and a strong will .
