  • Painting faces on your miniatures makes the biggest impact - people don't look at shoes or hips nearly as much as they do at the face. In this tutorial, you will learn how to paint faces on your miniatures easily.
Awesome 3D printed John Gerath is from LOOT STUDIOS! : bit.ly/3tOBi94
It is easy to fill the face with cadian fleshtone and let it be defined by thick coat of agrax earthshade - but that is no way to paint display miniatures! If you want some real quality paintjob, you have to invest a little more time into painting your miniatures. Here I am explaining very basic approach of layering and placing highlights on the face of the miniature to make the biggest impact on viewer's perception.

Good tips there - however, one thing way too many people miss is that the sides of the nose should not, repeat NOT be shaded - true, they are for natural reasons lower than the bridge of the nose, but that doesn't mean it needs an automatic shade - just look at the example picture of Geralt - no shades on the sides of the nose.
Another thing to think about is the eyes, and the scale of the miniature - on a 28/32mm miniature a dark brown slit is in most cases all you need, since you can't see the eyes that well - a human sized 28mm figure held at say 30-40 cm from your own eyes is the equivalent of a person standing about 15-20 meters away from you, and at that distance, most people have difficulties seeing that kind of detail. Painting the eyes more detailed than a slit makes it look overdone. For larger scales then sure, eyes to a varying degree of detail can be painted - in 1/35 it's enough with one dark line under the upper eyelid and a dark pupil (never black though), on larger scales, yeah, you can pull out all the bells and whistles. But remember what scale it is you are holding in your hands.

I have a 4-step-2-paint way to actually easily paint faces (human-like).
Base with Rakarth Flesh -> shade all over with Reikland Fleshshade -> SIMPLE highlight with Rakarth (nose, brows, chin, other standing out features) -> shade all over with Reikland again.
If you thin the shade at each step a bit, you'll get a lighter face (sickly pale).

Miniscule drop of black wash into eye sockets (it look amazing from distance, and not so bad up close)

Can you recommend some paints for dark/black skin tones ? I’d love a little variety for some of my fyreslayer minis 🤔

Sure, rhinox hide would be a good starting point and adding various amounts of gorthor brown, ice yellow and ivory would work well

Best way to paint a good looking face is to put a helmet over it.

One mistake a lot of novices commit when painting eyes is leaving the sclera (the white part of the eye) visible above and/or below the iris (the round colorful part of the eye). This gives the face a terrified or shocked expression. To prevent this from happening you need to paint the iris so that it connects the top and bottom eyelids. Also, painting the eyes looking perfectly straight forward can be challenging (and result in a somewhat boring expression), so making the eyes look to the side is a nice way to both cut a corner and add motion to the miniature, if you tie it to the pose right.

I fucking HATE painting eyes, I paint black or white on the skin by accident when trying to paint eyes. And they still look like shit at the end
