Love it, please do some more of these! very interesting stuff here
I think some kind of tutorial series from you would be amazing.
100% agree!!!!
Kill Furries nice profile pic
Pousi pls b0ss!!
Tiene una voz hermosa y perfecta
This is simply the best. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with fans! Not many artists are willing to do so and it's actually very encouraging, not only inside a specific field but also for pretty much anything we desire to achieve. You know, havig somebody who works hard for their goals and does amazing stuff telling you "you can do it too" is a blessing.
Thank you again, and especially thank you for being this awesome with your fans!
A big hug from Uruguay
Fucking love it! No bull shit, just nerding out over how awesome music is made. Please do more of these. Much respect to what you do and your passion.
DUDE -- Not many artists provide all this info, and a lot of fans just want to listen to the music without caring about how it's made with each and every element that goes into it. This is totally cool of you to do, and even adding links to download! Every bit that goes into the music along with everything else those in the Industry do besides the touring, managing products for sell, multiple websites to get the music out there. I've PERSONALLY seen it, and I've listened to Q & A's you've taken, and then hear some of the questions that didn't even pertain to the topic at hand (cringed at the latter when I was hearing gamers and others talking about other things than what it was about. Know that some of us out there actually pay attention and know that every minute of being in the industry barely have the time to even sleep.... SERIOUSLY -- Reaching out to fans the way that you do is noticed and not gone in vain. (Merely an interested in the makings / finding symbolism that may shift to other symbolism throughout life kind of fan who likes to discuss things -- Not a worshiper of the ground artists walk on here.)
With how crazy busy you are, to do this for fans on top of it is ........ WOW! Impressive. Talking about how different things resonate right in your face is spot-on with how I word musicians and seeing the behind-the-scenes, listening closely, and seeing it being performed. Worded exactly right .... Has to resonate with me to in order to feel the f*** out of it right in my face and to the core. Right on, THAT's what I blast and gravitate to. Totally cool of you to do this and upload it to your CZcams page. I absorb as much info I can by the personal friends in the industry in the public eye as well as the art behind the camera. F***ing awesome for you to do this on top of the INSANITY of your schedule! MANY discussions and watching closely of those I've gotten to know in person led to the passion of learning more and more and even f***ing more. ALWAYS more to learn and ABSORB!
>...Get it to sound human; it's never going to sound natural...
So... Close to human?
Now you're getting it!
Now we can see what's behind the genius! Loved it. Watched it twice.
I've been a hobbyist for a long time. I being walked through the process you used for this piece. It's cool to finally learn how you do vocoder stuff. I happen to use the same one, but was never able to get to sound clear. Part of it is apartment shyness. I feel like my neighbors can hear me "sing" making me very self conscious. I am sure I sound like a cat in labor.
Thank you for this and your openness. You are such an inspiration, "living the wasted life" is my most favourite.
I meant to just have a peek at this since I have no ear for audio, but this was so compelling I had to sit and watch the whole thing. Super cool!
I'm an amateur musician and longtime fan of yours and I cannot put into words how enormously grateful I am to you for making this video. So much knowledge in here and I just keep rewinding to take notes to make my own music sound better. Please make many more of these, even if it's just once every 2-4 months. This is the most helpful and entertaining thing to watch in regards to music.
I like this a lot. Your style of explaining is different from most other producers.
Awesome!!!!! Would love to see this done with 'Never enough'! Thanks Daniel :-)
That pitch up trick for tuning is pretty boss dude. I only got into paying attention to tuning on my upcoming EP and it's really made a world of difference, even though I'm not very good at it yet! Will def be scraping this vid for tips and tricks
You are a great musician but above all a great person, greetings from Mexico !!
thats awesome i hope this series gets big. looking forward to more
Me too!
GREAT idea for informing and breaking it down! I'm interested in these things. Thanks!
saw you playing this song live in munich a week ago, i was so happy that you played that song! To be honest: I didn't knew you before Lindemann introduced you as their support some month ago, but then i searched for your songs and i love your music. I got "Into the black" as christmas present from my brother and it's awesome! After the first video i saw from you (Gods & Gold) i thought you are very crazy (and maybe you are) but you are also so friendly and have a great character, and I don't normally fawn that much, but i wanted to say thank you for the music and videos like this. This and also your video about the "right way to practice" helped my fiancée and me very much (We make music ourself, but just as a hobby in a much smaller state than you do and we have to learn sooo much things). I am looking forward to more songs and albums from you and am glad to have discovered you thanks to Lindemann! (And you were a great support for them and youre german is awesome!) - Best greetings from Germany!
Thanks so much for your kind words, Jonny! Will be back in Germany in April. Hope you can see us again! :)
@@ClosetoHumanMusic I am looking forward to see you live again! Do you also come near Munich again this year?
30 mins. and you made the song that the club downtown plays all the time! Way to go dude
They're not all this easy to make. Haha. This was definitely a fluke.
E visto personas con talento pero este niño arrasó con todos que bárbaro
Just seen a few of your video's and as a fan of metal and Rock (58) I'm Hooked. Bloody Brilliant Dude.
Wow. This is phenomenal. As someone who really admires your music and its production quality, you have offered invaluable insight and advice. Thank you so much for posting this, I hope to see more!.... Oh, and the reference to The Birthday Massacre 💜
Excellent. Very informative.
Dude. DO a master class. As much as I love this being free and I love you doing it for free, you are a natural teacher.
Regardless, thank you. Thank you so much for bringing me into your work space and sharing.
Keep doing these. Thanks
This is helpful for me. Just started messing with music again. U are an inspiration.🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽
I really love seeing this kind of thing, thank you so much for doing these kinds of videos!
Can't wait to see you someday, you're an absolute legend
Here's hoping for a tour stop in Minneapolis in the next couple of years ❤
We played Minneapolis back in February! But we will be back! :)
Minor 3rd :-) but awesome. I'd never know you weren't that knowledgable in music theory. All Beauty Destroyed is one of my favs and it seems complex. Hope you keep this series continuing, I love seeing these kinds of workflows.
Thank you SOOOO much!
I love it, great work!
Defiantly keep doing these..I always look forward to anything new on your channel..keep up the good work man
Buen sonido me encanta este ritmo de musica es muy potente
i love you man. I feel I learned more from this than 8 years of trying to learn on my own. I know I fawn a lot over someone my own age but your just wonderful man.
Please do more of these! It's always nice to learn something new that I can use in my own music.
i like so much your video tuto, congrats Daniel very very well done.. you have much talent, i like it
51:04 That face! Thanks for sharing.
You're amazing, love your music and performance ☺
wow such an amazing video
I really enjoyed the video and although I don't deal with sound I felt that you gave great information. It is cool to hear you put so much effort into the singing and how it works with the song. I am looking forward to the next one.
This is fantastic. I have been wanting to get inside your head for years. I honored that you shared this with us. I learned a lot so thank you. I'll Make Sure My Drums Are Tuned Before I send you anything!
I really love your work ! dont stop of making music
Yeah,I loved this,it’s absolutely fascinating.I am no musician, but you made it really interesting.I would really enjoy more stuff like this, and you presented it all very well.
I’ve bought both versions and having listened dozens of times now I still can’t decide which I like best.
Would love for more frequent tutorials, from the ground up. There can not be a better teacher for us here. Pretty please :D
Would love to. I just need the time!
Love the song, loved seeing its construction laid bare in such an informative way,you are a class act and a musical genius.I want more like this! You seem to just keep getting better and better ❣️
Thanks so much!
Perfecto
Loved this insight into your creative process, have been inspired by your music for a long time now :) digging the new single BTW. I didn't know to separate the drum track into different elements per track, obvious really but overlooked it before, thanks for the heads up!
Very informative, thanks for sharing the process with us! (Also, please do more videos like this!) :D
As a young, fairly amateur producer/composer I find this sort of stuff really helpful and this is definitely the best video I've found so far. I'd love it if you kept this series going, also I love your music :) Ebb and Flow was amazing
Thanks! I do plan on doing more. It's just a matter of finding the time. :)
Creo que este es el ritmo de musica que le gusta a los jóvenes con mucha potencia
Damn man! Seeing this video made me appreciate music 100000x fold! BTW! I love you ACCESS VIRUS! old school man! Jesus your knowledge is crazy!
This is a very interesting and informative video for a lot of reasons. I particularly like the guitar version of this song and all the different production choices that were made to fit the guitar vs a synth melody - the result sounds strikingly similar to the band CTRL who I highly recommend ay least a cursory listen to. Great band live as well!
I’ve learned a lot
Awesome job, a lot of solid information in this! I'm truly hoping to see more of this for previous tracks (far too numerous to name any specifically). Looking forward to what music you bring as well as these videos. Keep it up!
Will absolutely be doing this for future tracks! Older tracks? Probably not because it's been so long I don't even remember what I did. Ha.
Awesome, that will be great! I am excited to see what the future holds.
hell yeah! i've been wanting to see your creative process for awhile now. i even bought a mac just to use logic because you had replied to a comment long ago saying it is the DAW you use.
This is a very useful stuff for everyone who`s interested in creating music like that. Well done!
Electro Goth is your baby! 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤
Este ritmo de musica le gusta casi a todos
Thank you for taking the time to explain the technical details of your song. This is a great way for us aspiring Hobby musicians to learn more about the trade ;)
Awesome insight into one of my favourite songs (both versions) atm. Just gotta say Damn Good Rhythm got me into you, what a song❗ Hope you do more videos like this, its always a privilege to see a genius in their natural habitat :-)
Daniel, thank you for doing this! I'm the person who suggested this idea and your video turned out great. I have always wanted to know about how an electronic song is built from the ground up and this is perfect. It's amazing how much work you put into your songs. I never knew about the fine tuning of each particular sound. Very interesting. I teach and produce videos so I know how much time, effort and commitment you put into this. I have another idea...you could use some of this kind of footage in a music video. Mix a live performance with this studio work. Thank you again and look forward to seeing you in Austin, TX.
P.S. - I'm still campaigning to get you to remake/redo/update your song "Beautiful" from your 2002 demo. Think about how great it would be to put your new vocal style in it.
Love it! Been playing around with music production, started with Maschine with JAM and Kontrol S25. But I am loving iPad production now, love touch screens. :)
This is amazing. I have so little musical talent that this stuff is like watching a sorcerer at work.
Excellent stuff bro! Only an indie artist so much to learn, I still have :D
I see an Access Virus there!
Absolutely love it! Boyfriend says look into Melodyne for vocals. You might be interested in it
Melodyne isn't for me. I think I mention that somewhere in the video...
Thank you! I've never been to your website and the downloads link was very cool - supplying stems for some of your songs goes nicely with a tutorial like this. Maybe my first wikipedia edit will be to add them to this rather short list: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_musical_works_released_in_a_stem_format
Wow, great job with this, I've been a hobbyist for 20 years, hate to use that word lol but I could never take the stress of professional musicianship. I however do enjoy recording friends' bands (until everyone settled down haha) Very good tips especially as I work in the box and never record gtr on my own...but lately I've developed an interest to do something different even if I'm a crap player. Hard panning left and right copies of the gtr track sounds like something I need to incorporate immediately - likewise I'm not a big industrial metal guy, would prefer subtle, less predictable stuff.
I'm learning to use a 24 tone octave rather than the standard 12. So its measured in quarter steps instead of half steps, normally you reach those notes from pitch shifting up or down 50 cents or bending a string of course. Arabic music features that sort of thing and nowadays a lot of plugins have these alternative tunings supported. One that does which I love is Aalto and the other Madronna labs stuff, some very unique vsts with some nice metallic wavetable, additive and fm sort of sounds but not retro focused. Synths are capable of too much to be stuck in retro-land all the time.
Loving the Yoda and Tie FIghter :D I have lego star wars minifigs across the top of my monitors in my workspace :D
Thanks for the video watched it all before commenting here. Not like I'll do any of this any time soon. Though I've always had interest. Just sometimes not knowing where to start.
Just gotta dive in sometimes!
yeeeeessss knowledge!!! feed me music knowledge!!!! >:D thank you!!
Thank you for this. Keep 'em coming!
Maybe you could make some short tutorial exclusively on making those electro basslines like in R&C. Like, from the very beggining and slowly, for dummies like me :D
I could, but I'd prefer to make something more interesting than that bass!
Either way, can't wait :)
Aaahh, this explains why I like the electronic version best (except that I'm not always in to guitars in electronic music). It has more depth and more smaller elements which I think gives it it's "soul".
Also, very informative for complete amateurs like me 😂 Definitely got some useful tips and tricks.
Music production is an addiction.
13:02, "Good enough, right?" 😂😂 that's the attitude to have 😏
This video's awesome and informative! I've learned a lot about areas I need to improve on in my music such as kick drum tuning, laying out vocal melodies and practicing before recording vocals, and how to add sounds around the vocals instead of working on the track and adding vocals on top. Usually, I just make an accompaniment in LMMS and then record vocals in Ardour. I love how you've explained why it's not a good idea to do this. I'll be sure to incorporate these techniques into future songs and improve my workflow. Thank you very much for showing the world the mechanics of your creativity, you're awesome!
What I'd love to know is how exactly one would stack compression? Would there be two or three compressor plugins on the same channel and the output of one compressor becomes the input of another compressor (and so on)?
Glad you like the video! Hope it helps with your own production. Yes, if you're stacking compressors it's usually on the same channel. One right after another. One thing I didn't mention is that if you've grouped vocals together (like layers for a chorus) it is a good idea to compress each track individually, and then your 2nd stacked compressor would be on the grouped bus to glue all the layers together!
Thank you so much for your reply and the bonus tip!
Great video and thanks for putting the stems up! Can we shoot any remixes we do over your way to check out? Remix contest could also be fun :)
By all means. Do remixes. Send them to me. Spin them. Release them. Have fun!
I like Google's auto captions. "You got me lost in Santa Cruz, girl I cannot find my beach. Got me staring in the strobe light singing your bail, Daddy."
Do you plan to reissue "A violent emotion" album? I think, it would be very awesome.
Could you do one on The Dark Half? I really want to know how you get that high pitched sliding synth sound for the main riff
Me gustaría un vídeo de el con un ritmo de musica galaxia que el fuera bajando de una nave
Holy fuck thats a compressed voice sample in there...Wow, yeah not obvious would of never noticed. This track is great & will get 'club play' soon.
Could have used more compression!
Close to Human Music - squeeze it 'til it bleeds?
Good deal, agreed @48:38 seriously...Fuuuck that noise.
Some great tips that I will start using immediately! Quick question, I love the idea of plotting out the vocal notes before doing your take... but in the creation phase do you hum it first or write with the piano first? Also are your words before the melody? Do the lyrics ever get in the way of the rhythm? Shoot I'd better keep watching, maybe you answer this
Everything is intertwined. I can't write lyrics without a melody and I can't write a melody without thinking about lyrical ideas. Of course this whole process takes place at a keyboard or with a guitar in my hand. The goal is for everything to flow together as perfectly as possible. Lots of lyrics and vocals sound disjointed or forced because the writer isn't paying enough attention to certain variables in this equation. Truth is, I often have to sacrifice certain words or sentences that I find beautiful and poetic, for something less so to benefit the flow. Happy writing!
Godly
Daniel, can you say something about the new album, at least a hint?....And yes, a very cool tutorial, more of these from each new single!Thanx 4 All and your great music, with love from Russia!👏
No more albums!
Close to Human Music There is no album?
Odin Yodeen Singles only...
I think this is one of the few times I've seen someone show how they've built a song. very interesting stuff, thanks for posting it.
I do have one question, though. After having seen how meticulously you work, how do you translate all these settings to the live show? Can you do that, or do you have to strip it down out of necessity?
We don't ever run multitrack software live. We build projects where all the electronics are mixed into a single "backing track" and synced with video / click track. If you ever see a band have technical problems, it's cuz they tried to do this type of thing live.
Awesome. Thanks for replying!
I really enjoyed this. I make my own electronic music but nothing I take too seriously. Do you think less is more when it comes to this style of music or is having 32 tracks too excessive?
Less is always more. If it isn't necessary, take it out.
Wow
Mr. Graves, you said you hate "guitar-driven" industrial. I'm just curios, is it either a matter of personal music taste, or, maybe, you can give us some thoughts on why mixing up electro/industrial sounds with distortion(metal/rock) guitar can be a bad idea? Thanks.Liked the video very much, btw
It's absolutely taste. There is nothing objectively wrong with guitar driven industrial music, it's just not a sound I enjoy. I prefer stuff like Architects or Every Time I Die.
Is it ok to ask how you became so knowledgeable on Logic Pro x?
Been using it for 10+ years. I read tutorials, talk to other producers etc...
What are those racks under the screen?
I love guitar driven industrial...but, Combichrist is going the Ministry route...which is eh...
Do you know the program cubase? And what are you thinking bout this?
I used to use Cubase. It's fine. Much like Logic.
To be hit pop song dont you need the 4 chord progression?
Kick is still off..
Björn Hedén wat
What do you think about racism in music?
Racism is gross in general.
What racism in music? In rock? Rock is almost devoid of racism these days. Guys like this alcoholic cueball need to worry more about the sexual filth that goes on in the goth scene. It's always hilarious watching these so-called feminists play shows in scenes that harbor rapists and male sexual fiends.
If you ever need a collab guitar player, sing (screamo) scream overtones your know where to find me:)
Is it true that this type of music is dominated by Western Europeans?
I also hate your amplitude on this video lol
Amplitude? The volume of everything? What could have been better?
It's a joke as if saying I don't like your attitude
You have a bad amplitude bro!
