    I always was impressed with the soft neon glow effect on the particle weapons, slime and ghosts. It's not cartoony enough to look fake, but not realistic enough to look some normal weapon/effect.

    The props, piratical effects, and optical effects still look fantastic to this day.
    It is incredible what they have achieved for this film under such time constraint given the newly formed effects company.
    The Boss FIlm Studios was started by Richard Edlund (ex-ILM), and the short timeline e.g. only ten months to build the effects studio, shoot the scenes and composite the images.
    The Ghostbusters SFX also have a 'warmth' and charm that was kinda lost in Ghostbusters II SFX which was then handled by ILM.

    • @understatedwalrus
      @understatedwalrus Před 4 lety +3

      I think the GB1 VFX hold up maybe better than any other film's from the time, certainly better than ILM's work on GB2, and I think it's because the GB1 effects do have that chaotic charm and humor baked in. I hope the VFX crew for the new flick have watched this.

    I remember this from one of the later home releases. I just wished they show a bit more of the process being done (if the footage existed). I would’ve loved to see the proton streams actually being drawn, animated and composited. That’s greedy I know. But I can wish.
    It’s weird to me that both times Boss Films did VFX for now-classic movies and got Oscar nominated, they were then passed over in favor of ILM for the sequels: Ghostbusters and DieHard. My thinking is ILM was (justifiably) all the rage at that point and were on a streak at that time.

    In my opinion, these special effects used back at 1984 are way creepier and scarier than today's CGI. CGI to me, just doesn't provide the same suspension of disbelief anymore.
    I was born in 1979, so Ghostbuster is a part of my childhood's pop culture. I can still remember being freaked out and scared out of my wits as a small child back then, while trying to watch Ghostbusters.

      Ghostbusters was the first movie I ever saw in theaters. I was 4 years old, soon to be 5. That scene where Slimer goes after Venkman down the hall scared me. I wasnt scared by any other scenes, even the librarian. After the movie my mom and dad asked the usher if we could stay for the next showing. Just until the Slimer scene. So I could confront my fears. My parents explaining special effects to 4 year old me. And why I shouldn't be afraid. We left after that scene. Which didn't scare me this time and I have ever since loved the movie. :)

      Though I don't think Aykroyd was aware of it, there was a Ghost Busters cartoon back in the '70s that had two guys plus a gorilla named Tracy chasing ghosts. They bought the rights to the name when they made the film. However, Filmation re-released the cartoon (and a new series of toys) in the mid-1980s to capitalize on the success of the film. Columbia countered by releasing a cartoon based on the characters from the movie and called it The Real Ghostbusters.

    practical / optical FX will ALWAYS look better and more realistic because it IS real. Because it is actually photographed and blends in so much better with the live action scenes. CGI effects just never work that good because it takes a LOT more time to get the lighting done. And the lighting is what makes a CGI effect work or become uncanny valley. Practical Effects just look a lot more like the human eye would expect it as normal. Which keeps the suspension of disbelief intact.

    There's no consistency in the design of the ghosts in Ghostbusters - the taxi driver looks like an entirely different species than Slimer, for instance.
