    It's time to get ready for Ghostbusters: Afterlife! Where would the Ghostbusters be without their iconic Proton Packs? So many have wanted to use one and built their own but is there any science behind the fiction? Strap on your packs as we travel back to what first inspired Dan Aykroyd and how instrumental these tools were even in the earliest ideas of Ghostbusters. We go through the evolution of this quintessential tool through scripts, concept art, and the final prop creation. From there, we take the in-universe physics and break down what makes up ectoplasmic entities and how subatomic particles play a part in capturing them. We break down step-by-step the process each part of the pack plays in powering and producing protons.

    The nerdiness of all this is why I fell in love with Ghostbusters lore. A bunch of scientists booted out of their university work and called quacks. Then they come up with all these tools and start a short lived enterprise of capturing ghosts. I loved it. Even Afterlife was nerdy enough for me.

    The design of the stream is fantastic, especially in GB1 with the 2-way channel concept they used (then subsequently abandoned in GB2). Besides the orange/blue look, the only unusual detail of the stream that is easily visible is that the stream's whipping motion appeared to be originating from the far end rather than from the thrower. You'd have to pause/slowmo the scenes to see all of the other incredible details they put into it: 1. the visible orange stream originates from the far end, not the thrower (which explains the whipping motion detail). 2 the static electric field is emitted only upon the orange stream connecting with the thrower (prompting the burst of energy at the thrower's tip). 3. purple/mauve darts shoot back through the stream from the far end to the thrower, but only after the static electric field reaches the far end ("confinement stream" from Egon in ballroom scene). It must have been a blast designing things that next to no one would ever notice, or care to notice (yes I cared too much).

  • @AgentExeider
    @AgentExeider Před 2 lety +3

    this was a very well thought out and described video. A primer of the workings of a proton pack. One thing I'd like to offer is, the Neutrona Wand tip apparently has some kind of twist control for the leading (front) mounted hand, I was told this controls the "wobble" the beam can have, which is why in some scenes, the beam is very straight, while in others, twists left or right or even seems to have a curve to it. From what I was told this is so when you have a ghost entangled and the ghost is fighting the beam, you can give it some slack so as not to lose it. The analogy I was told is that capturing a ghost is like fishing, your firm in some moments, then slack in others, this in turn allows the ghost to tire itself out and thus to weak to resist when trying to get it into the trap. Hence Ray's advice of _"Zap 'em, Cap 'em and Trap 'em"_ , meaning to weaken the ghost, zap them of there energy, entangle them in the beam like a rope, cap them, and then put them in position to get sucked in by the trap's proton field, trap them.

    • @beverlyscott3741
      @beverlyscott3741 Před 2 lety

      Thats good. Im just going to add that the trap (meuon trap) doesn't have a proton field, but does use electro magnets with alternative currents to keep the negative PKE make up of the ghost inside.

    I love your explanation of the proton packs operation I always theorized that the proton pack was a dual plasmatron that just took hydrogen gas & converted it to protons like the process in the large Hadron collider my theory was using the animated proton pack the red part was the power cell using tritium connected to the accentuator the yellow round part would be the tank of hydrogen gas & the middle top part with the gauge would be the pump that pumps hydrogen gas via the metal hose to the dual plasmatron which is the round part of the pack then from there the hydrogen is made into protons & like the ionization chamber/ ion source of particle accelerators the plasma is forced through the hose into the wand the wand has electromagnets that accelerates the proton plasma out of the wand.

    WOW! Great break down. I just took in all things Ghostbusters this October because we as a family became Ghostbusters fr this past Halloween. I made our proton packs. So I feel l've seen so much of it. And this video is the icing on the cake of my research. Great job!! And thanks for making this.

    this is just so well thought of, i didnt think that every mash of things that makeup the proton pack would have their own functions and not just things put in there to make it look like it, the level of detail is legendary haha i wonder what would happen if people funded to make this a real thing.

    Holy Crap your video just blew my mind like the head of a GIANT stay puft Marshmallow head over 55 Park west in NYC. I 💙 the detail in the real world design and the detail in your video of all their details in the flicks.
    Good form I say good form
    😉 👍
