      Yah, my place wanted $200.00 after my cat failed inspection there. But I spent days looking into do it yourself stuff and tried the toothpaste method and then an inexpensive kit from ArmorAll. Still had some white-ish streaks, and re-inspection today now says headlights need to be reaimed (one of them). The inspector said it's probably because the foggy streak is changing the angle the light is emitted from. So I said I'd redo the headlight cover and come back. Tried baking soda but only slight improvement. But I don't have all this sandpaper or any electric buffer or any such thing. Maybe a better kit will do the trick, I don't need to stock up on a bunch of stuff bc I'm in a small apt and might sell the car and/or might be moving around a lot in near future. I wish I knew more people or had a boyfriend who was handy. I had a bf but he was not much use, tho he was sweet and funny.

    • @chrisfix
      @chrisfix  Před 9 lety +1

      Mike Strickland You might have used too light of a coat. There is a delicate balance when painting (which I am not really good at haha). You need to get it thick enough to coat the lens, but not too thick where it runs. You can try sanding it down again with 400 grit and start over. Or you can use 2000 grit and and down the orange peel really good so it looks smooth (but it will look scratched up). Then use compound and a buffer (or elbow grease) to really buff the lens. Let me know how it goes!

    After trying many different headlight restoration kits, and spending over a hundred dollars, not to forget the labor I put into trying to make these products work, I figured out the perfect way to get clear headlights again. I shopped online and bought replacement headlights. It took me less time to instal them, and now they are perfect. I did have to realign them as to not blind my fellow motorist driving the opposite way. I am very happy now and tell all my friends, to just buy new headlight assemblies and save time, and aggravation.

      Grunchy Follow that video exactly. If the surface is too smooth, the clear coat will peel in under a year because it cannot grab onto anything. Also, without a rough surface, the clear coat will run down the lens.

Also, it cleared with a slight roughness to it.

      +ChrisFix I had already seen the one with toothpaste and baking soda and a toothbrush. I think I'll try 1000 then 2000 sandpaper, then use some toothpaste -if it's looking pretty good after the 2000.
      Maybe I'll try 600 grit if that doesn't work.
      One of my headlight covers is 13 years old and it looks really bad. The other one is only 8 years old and is in a lot better shape. I had to replace that when I rear-ended that SUV while a was distracted by a cement elephant painted pink by the side of a wet road:).

    I did this on my 2003 Buick Century as a test, tried using first Rust Oleum then Krylon clear, ended up with a poor outcome each time, followed all the steps accordingly and after reading through comments for tips. Finally stripped off the clear by sanding, used 3M scratch remover and waxed it. Perfect. Would never do any sanding on headlamp covers again, so much easier using the other methods such as a scratch remover or cleaner as shown on other videos, much less time and effort with the desired results.

      Jose Hernandez Thanks for the tip! I was thinking about it, but the wax lasts about 4-6 months and that is typically how often I wax the car so it will just get a coat then!

    Cool vids man. I've been doing this for decades on antique auto plastic.. But with "rubbing and polishing" compounds on a buffer.
    The sand paper is a great trick too! Thats also something I've done to work rough plastic to a clear polished surface.
    One thing you might consider is using a polish of some sort before the wax coat.
    Again, keep up the great work with your vids.

    tried this method and completely ruined my headlight lol Here are my personal notes: 1. if you do this out in the open, be aware that derbis will often fall on your headlights. Wind kept bringing in dust, pollen, and other junk. Best to do it inside a garage with garage dooe opened. 2. Use newspaper instead of a plastic bag. Many of the trash bags are made to resist cutting. I had a hard time cutting a bag even though the scissors were new! Also when I remove the tape from the bag, a gust of wind blew the air into my headlights and got stuck. Gonna try again and see how it goes.

    Hey Chris, thanks for the video. Do you think this will still work if the headlights are nice and smooth since that’s how they are on my car but have quite bad yellowing (its more of a swirly motion than the uniform yellowing). Ps: I tried some heavy duty turtle compound that i had lying around on a tiny area to see if that would make any difference (as an indication that the sanding method would work) but to no avail. Any help/input would be greatly appreciated!

    if you don’t have a dremel or don’t wanna use toothpaste, you can always use a clear coat of spray paint (the one with UV protection) and do three or four coats of it then you’ll never have to touch your headlights again since the UV isn’t damaging it anymore. that’s what i did with my 2006 tiburon and it’s worked like a dream. went from the headlights matching my yellow paint to crystal clear using the same sandpaper method w a clear coat. a little less labor.

      Xin Lan its good for if the paint on the car has bad paint and you don't really care about the car. bug spray runs off and melts the plastic. but if you're just desperate and need it to pass inspection then it does the job
