The term wafaa is used as the reward is due to the work done to earn it. In Islamic tradition it is believed that all beings including humans are the property of Allah so when someone passed away under Islamic historical tradition that is still used by Muslims today they say wafaa or wafat (depending on gender) meaning that Allah has taken them back to himself as their were his from the start in comparison to the term maat which is the more formal term used to say someone/thing died (doesn't imply an afterlife).
