Trying to get sober being a non-celebrity is hard enough. As an ex-addict the title of this video caught my eye. I thought I'd be dead by my own hand before I turned 30, but the survivor in me had other plans. I've been sober 19 years (consecutive😏 )& next month I'll be 61 years old.
@@annav6998, possibly… probably… still charms the hell out of me… which, i suppose, is the best evidence that she’s been practicing melting middle-aged men since childhood.
Recovered addict here - in my opinion, addicts are different from regular people because they use drugs to mask deeper issues. I've been clean and sober for 4 years and the idea of altering my mind with any substance seems like the worst possible thing I could do. Once you get you mind, body, and spirit into a balanced state, you sober experience of reality is a thousand times better than anything you get from drugs. I'm grateful that my addiction forced me to do the inner-work that made me realize this.
I’ll speak for myself. California sober would not work for me. I have 7 years clean and sober. If I smoked it would be a matter of time before I just went and got my drug of choice. Many people go on the marijuana maintenance program. Some do it till they are ready to put everything down and some don’t. Personally I take no chances I like how my life is now.
Congrats on four years! My sobriety birthday is today coincidentally, and I completely agree. The last two years of being sober would have been impossible if I hadn't abstained completely and worked a program. But more power to her.
it’s like that everywhere it’s just not known. Just look at foster care aging out statistics over 1,000 kids die of abuse every year so it’s unimaginable how many kids are being abused
I went 1 year 7 months sober and had a relapse in November and I’ve been drinking 20 units a day since. Yesterday was my first day tapering off alcohol. I will be totally sober again and have my life back 💪🏼 Update: 2 months sober! 🙏🏼
Battling addiction right now, I could not imagine going through this with the world watching me, making memes about my OD and getting hate for it every day. I wish her the best! Edit: just so yall know ive been off pain pills since April 14th which was my bday and I have yet to even think about going back. Its hard because im in genuine chronic pain but id rather be sober and in pain than be doped up all day unable to feel actual feelings
@@stee8487 doesnt make it that much easier. So sick of people thinking all addicts would magically be able to get sober if they had a million dollars. No, 99% of them are just gonna look at it as unlimited drug money. So thats different with her just because shes famous too? Makes absolutely no sense. It would only make sense to someone who has no idea what addiction is truly like.
I've never really liked her genre of music, but I appreciate her as a person finding herself. That's not easy, especially for someone who grew up in the spotlight - being judged on every aspect of her life and choices. Glad she's on a better path.
It’s not for everybody that’s for sure. It comes with a lot of perks endless supply of whatever you want good or bad but every mistake you make growing up is magnified a million times because your famous and opened yourself to public opinion!!!!
@@devinpledger2251 you can be conditioned to be aware of what the world is thinking of you. You can be aware of society's judgement. Been “California sober” for 12 years and swear by it for me personally. Never relapsed on harder stuff again. More people need to understand the value of harm reduction but as Joe said people want to think of it in absolutes. Recovery is not black and white.
No doubt. Everyone wants absolutes nowadays, whether it be with politics, drugs, diet, all of this shit. Why should any addiction be solved by going cold turkey or completely cutting it over time. Look at people that crash diet, or go on major diets, the fail rate isn’t even astonishing anymore. I firmly believe that moderation is the answer to most if not all of these problems. California sober is the essence of being happy. I’m Talking as a highly functional alcoholic. Although I do go on extended amounts of time of cold turkey but only because my moderation has gotten me used to Not drinking, as soon as I drink though I fight the need to consume by keeping my consumption moderated, instead of a bottle a night, I drink a bottle in 3-5 days But only if the bottle is opened. A way I keep myself cold turkey is by keeping the ‘Cork’ as a barrier
Great, that may work for you- as you stated, everyone's recovery is different. but for a ton of people, weed and (especially) alcohol, can be an immediate trigger into relapse. This "California sober" (LOL) thing she's doing is absolutely playing with fire. Do not at all be surprised if she relapses. Coming from another heroin addict, I really hope the best for her, but she is literally playing with her life by doing this.
Yeah and that’s what works for you and that’s great. It didn’t work for me however or anybody else that I’ve known except a few people. Seriously though glad it works for you
The difference between an eating disorder and a drug addiction is that you have to eat. You need food to survive so it actually makes sense to me that you would figure out a way to overcome eating disorder. Drugs are different you don't need them. That is something that once you start doing it is very hard to control
I’m sensing a narcissist in our presence. “What a lot of people don’t know..” is the phrase that has been tossed throughout this whole journey. She clearly doesn’t know or is willing to admit that all the toxic things that she has been doing IS and will ALWAYS be the source of why she is miserable. That’s why you need to work your ass of in trying to overcome these obstacles that life throws in your way in order to test you and show you that you’re more capable than you think you are.
I really don’t give a shit about celebrities but I hope this girl conquers her demons. Seems like a nice enough person and these struggles are very real. Best of luck to her
Im just not buying into all of this. Yez she struggles with addiction but making the whole show around it pushing all the usual celebrity buttons: bulimia, bullying, being bisexual all of a sudden...
this response, is in a nutshell, pretty much the sum of all joe rogan's podcasts. he blurts out the most retarded things at the most inappropriate times. im guessing thats why hes got the following that he has?
I'm glad I stumbled upon this. Never knew her really. She's a very nice person. I feel bad she went through what she did, but God gave her a chance to live again from her mistakes, and that's how we know she is an amazing person. Hopefully she's keeping her positivity.
I’m Canadian sober. Marijuana is legal across our entire country. Every province it’s legal. So I assume it’s similar to California sober. But because not all states in America is it legal so that makes sense to me! I use it for chronic pain and I micro dose edibles I buy at a local dispensary and it’s such a healing medicine! I gift from Mother Nature!
I'm canadian and I wish it really wasn't legal. I had no health issues before. Now I had to move appartments 3 times because my neighbours smoked weed and it made me sick. Not just a slight headache, I wouldn't be able to sleep, I'd cough my lungs out for hours, I'd have a terrible migraine, mood swings, hoarse throat... to name a few. And to make matters worse, I work from home. So I couldn't work anymore and the authorities can't be bothered because it's FUCKING LEGAL. So yeah, as much as the junkie kids enjoy their new drug, a lot of people suffer from THEIR choices and everyone would be better off without it.
@@camille8010 that hilarious. Unless there are nonstop smoking, then there’s no way to affect you that much, unless you have some sensitive lungs and health issues. So it sounds like a YOU problem. Seems pretty selfish to wish that other people should be penalized for using something natural like weed, just because you happen to have a sensitivity to it. Not very Canadian sounding to me.
@@sheenaldeo It sure sounds like you know my health condition far better than my doctor. perhaps you should give him a call and explain your medical analysis ? I don't have any lungs issue or sensitivity. And yes, the secondhand smoke was almost always there. The reason is simple, the person smoked once a day, and the smell and vapes infused in the walls and pipes. It would slowly disperse throughout the day, constantly making me cough and more and more sick from the exposure. As for the "natural" origin of weed, water is natural , why don't you drown in it ? or, wait, even better, I'd like you to try the all-natural-cure Belladonna? I'm sure you'll appreciate it :D. You really shouldn't accuse me of being selfish when you're the ones IMPOSING your choices on others and ruining other people's lives. Secondhand smoke is a huge problem, and its all because of your selfishness. Half the population is affected negatively by smokers, and the other half is actively ruining themselves. If we remove weed and cigarettes, 100% of the population will be in better health. Who's been selfish? Imagine if I ate a whole lot of junk food, but you're the one getting fat. Wouldn't you be mad??

Haha, I remember in highschool, a kid's Christian Mom called the police on him, who tore up his room, and tried to send him to rehad after finding a baggy of weed.
looool.... In all seriousness though, Alcohol is a INSANELY powerful drug. 50$ worth of booze can easily kill you (and put you in worse state then crack, opiates/opiods, etc) . The substance is prettty addictive. What makes things worse society really makes it so easy to drink long enough to become addicted (sports events, dancing, family events etc). I once was getting the shakes after december to january. i had so many family, bar, hockey, new years events and got wasted at every one . The physical withdrawl is one of the few that can truly kill you by itself. I had methadone doctors tell me serious alcohol withdrawl is more dangerous then opiate withdrawl. Normally it takes a co morbidity for morphine withdrawl to kill you. This isn't the case with alcohol.... To me its pretty crazy you buy such a insanely powerful stubstance but not another... Im for more liberty but for far more harsher drunk driving penalties. Like 10 years license revoke at least for driving SERIOUSLY drunk (not just 2 beers )

How to heal from addiction and depression in LA: move. “I’m working hard not to offend anyone” - GIRL! That’s the problem with PC/woke culture. You’re caring so much about everyone else and everything around you that you have no sense of yourself. You’re suppressing (and in some cases oppressing) yourself to the point of physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual illness.
To be fair, part of being on that level of fame includes being aware about everyone else and everything around you. That level of success and wealth can really only be achieved when they are a part of youre priorities.

I wish the best in the future for Demi, my daughter and any others who suffer from these things as well. 🙏
My brother was a hard core addict. He smoked weed or was "California sober" and it didn't stop him from ODing. Does that mean it won't for everyone...no but there's a reason why they advise against it in early recovery. I'm a huge fan of her voice. I say it that way bc frankly over the years I stopped liking her as a person but I still think she's one of most gifted singers of my generation. With that being said she has some serious mental health issues on top of her addiction. I hope for the love of everything she is staying away from the stuff that could kill her but it's not a secret she has codependency issues with men or "love" and the idea of it and self worth issues. She needs to actually address these things out of the spot light or we will hear about another incident on the news. IMO. Everytime she "comes back" there's a level of performance about it. She's copes with work...she needs to cope with something else. I've followed her since I was a teenager. Followed her story and every recovery stint and her OD. There's a pattern. I hope she breaks it and find what works. I want the best for her. If that's "California sober" sure. Whatever idc. But if it ends in another OD I wouldn't be shocked.
I'm 46, hit rock bottom a few years ago, got help, therapy, meds then finally I quit smoking weed. That was a huge step. Soon after quitting weed I got off the meds. A year off the meds and I've quit smoking nicotine. Now I'm working on drinking less. You either get mentally stronger, or you don't.
It's all on how you handle yourself. Some people make momey from those pruducts. Cannabis, alcohol, it should all be in moderation, idk why people suffer and use substances to cope. I used to, it was really bad. It didn't work, it was just like when I'd cut. It never works, just makes you think you've escaped. Makes you feel like you found a safe place within the pain, and that never works. It's like staying in an abusive relationship, just isn't healthy. Take care.
It's all about progress, whether someone is choosing moderation or complete cessation, and whether or not that will be now or forever. People are affected differently on an emotional and chemical level and progress cannot be compared. People should always be encouraged to reflect on what they are doing and feel empowered to admit failure with condemnation. Giving support is the most critical aspect of rehabilitation and our society is so fucking awful at it.
Not everyone in recovery needs to be “clean.” I haven’t used an opioid in 5&1/2 years but I have never stopped myself from having a drink when I’m with friends and it works for me. 12 steps aren’t the only path to recovery.
Wrong. Been clean from heroin from 2 years, don't even smoke weed. I can still go out and have a few drinks on occasion without over doing it. 12 steps work for some people but I view them as dogmatic and never maintained my sobriety trying to follow them. Recovery is different for everyone
Yes maybe you two can get away with it, but that is very very rare when you are an ADDICT 95% of addicts can not just go enjoy a “couple” casual drinks with their friends that is very rare! Most addicts it has to be all or nothing it is very dangerous for most of us to even try to casually have a couple drinks because more times than not it will cause a full blown relapse why even risk it….good for you if you can do that but for the majority of us it does not work unless it’s all or nothing….so I completely agree….
@@flogoph13 I'm not telling you to go out and relapse, I think it is great you are 100% abstinent because that is a very hard thing to do and an amazing accomplishment. I’m a recovering opioid and cocaine addict. Tried abstinence. Never worked. I am Cali sober! I am in medical assistant school & got my cosmetology license. It’s not one’s business or place to tell anyone what they should do for their recovery.
Really hoping for the best for her, she’s been through the ringer. Everyone’s experience with recovery is different, but as someone who’s worked in the field of addiction for quite a few years, I have yet to know of anyone who has successfully managed to stay on a substance like weed or alcohol once they reached the level of addiction that she was at. Most people go through years of trying to find this elusive “balance” to eventually land on the finding that total abstinence is the only thing that works long term. There are outsiders though who find it does work for them and she has a lot of great resources at her disposal and what sounds like a strong support network, so maybe it will be what’s best for her. Either way wishing her good luck 🤞
Girl I am grateful that you shared your story. It seems tough to be in addiction and near death experience. I can’t imagine. Pray that things get better for you and you continue to do whatever you need to get better. Weed does have a lot of benefits as long as it is not done in excess, the right amount does have benefits. Also the different kinds, for different purposes is also something to look into. :)

ive dealt with an opiate addiction for over a decade now, starting in my mid teens. my first few periods of sobriety (a couple years of time in total) were spent in 12 step programs. I love the people i met in those rooms and I'm eternally grateful for the way those meetings helped me understand myself, but, I've also never been apart of such a dogmatic group. I ran and chaired a meeting for around a year and had a lot of time talking to people in the rooms, and NO ONE supports anything but abstinence. And I get it, for some people that's all they want and all that they have found to work, but it never worked for me, especially since I'm an oddity and have never had a problem with anything outside of opiates, and still havent. When I drink I only have a few drinks and then go to bed, and then wont drink for 6 to 8 months. I also smoke marijuana now (legal in my country) and have one puff of my pipe in the evening before bed. But whenever I'd try to talk about this I'd be shamed and told it just hasn't happened yet, and you get treated like a moron for thinking your different or thinking that you have the 'magic' answer. I just don't have the compulsion for those substances because I can't function normally on them, they are just nice for a vacation or sleep, but opiates made work more bearable, made me less anxious, helped me talk to strangers, quieted painful thoughts, and more so I just wanted to always feel like that, I was essentially self medicating with something dangerous. I now micro dose 300mg of mushrooms every other day for the anxiety and feel great. So I understand not wanting to be totally abstinent and the difficulty of sharing that with other people in recovery.
It’s an outside issue in AA just like Suboxone or methadone . Do I think I can smoke weed no. But what other people think is different cause it can help. Outside issue
I’m a recovering alcoholic and addict, my main substances of choice are alcohol coke and weed but I’ve tried just about every substance under the sun. Props to Demi man, proud of her, never been a fan, but I’m definitely proud of any recovering alcoholic/addict finding their path in life w out substance abuse.
As an ALANON kid I was always warned that alcohol was the getaway drug and found those that say pot is actually haven’t had to deal with addiction or have an addict directly in their lives. Some studies have also found that pot helps those with hardcore addictions stay off the bad stuff but at the end Of the day it’s one day at a time, one hour at a time or even one minute at a time cos pot won’t kill you but alcohol and other drugs will
It's just vernacular. When libs say that and they aren't being aggressive, it just means "my understanding is X" We don't know very many things 100%. Not that there isn't a such thing as objectivity but when it comes to why people do things and how things affect other people, it's just educated guesswork and our ego plays a big role in our perspective.
@Benghali In Platforms And what is that result? Did you read what I wrote? They use it when they're talking about their perception of reality. Again, objectivity is definitely a real thing in certain contexts but in others it's not. If you pick unnecessary fights you're going to end up strung out. Some things radlibs are doing are extremely problematic but the existence of the term "my truth" is not one of them.
@Benghali In Platforms No, actually. Your issue is that you're lumping them all together. I'm right wing, but I'm not right wing in the way Ben Shapiro is, as an example. There are marxists on the left. They are concerned with class, eg Ant*fa (not sure if that's a censored word). There are cultural marxists, these are trans activists, third wave feminists, race essentialists. Power+privilege people, basically. The term "cultural marxist" is a lot more vague than "marxist." I've seen it used to describe a ton of groups on the left and right. She falls more into that second category. In LA though, people like her are intensely nonconfrontational. Listen to where she uses the term. She's saying "even when I say what I believe to be true, I have to be careful because I'm a celebrity and I only work if my reputation is intact." I think like with Marxism you're conflating all uses of the term with the most aggressive use of the term. She's not attacking truth. She's saying she's sincere when she speaks. That's a good thing, I would think.

I know this post is old but I love the Cali sober term, I battled 10+ years of serious alcoholism and finally went to rehab back in July 2021, I waited over a year until I regularly smoked weed again and I found LSD and psilocybin mushrooms to be the most therapeutic experiences I've ever had, never been happier or in better physical shape or most importantly had such great bonds with my friends and family that they all forgave me for because I was a seriously horrible violent abusive alcoholic and deep down my family reminded me that I was better than that and they never gave up on me even when I became suicidal. I am so grateful everyday now even though I'm not technically sober-sober I don't do things that destroy my life and i enjoy safe drugs responsibly. God gave us everything here let's make the best of it
I don’t understand why people still slander Demi Lovato for being a struggling addict. At least she’s still alive. She could’ve been dead already. She got the second chances that Amy whine house or Mac Miller didn’t have
She isn’t a bad person. She isn’t going out in the world and hurting people like some people do when they are hurting inside. She takes her issues out on herself. Anyone that has something negative to say about her because of her addictions are ignorant people.
If drugs are a coping mechanism for you and not something you did exclusively for fun, you might not actually have addiction running in your genes, which is essentially what you mean by an addictive personality.
And her food addiction is proof of that... Addiction can affect any area of your life... There are so many red flags going on in these interviews, it's scary...
Replacing the drug of choice doesnt make it any less of an addiction. Idk why we stopped considering weed a drug. It's legal in a lot of places...cool but her controlling the fact she can have alcohol and weed just to prove she won't die from meth or heroine is not recovery. Imo. It's the same damn thing we just simply look the other way.
I was addicted to a lot of things and I smoked weed my whole life too. But when I got off everything else I depended HEAVILY on weed then that became another addiction for me. When I didn’t have it I’d have full blown panic attacks, shakes, racing thoughts, paranoia, insomnia, couldn’t eat and overall just be veryyyy mean to people over nothing. So I had to stop smoking and completely find myself before I could try it again. I tried it again bc it was never the problem until I stopped the hard stuff, and I realized I was using it as a numbing bandaid
Godbless you demi i feel sad for your deep suffering like so many stars . Your music has lifted me so many times. There is an amazing clinic in North Brook called the mind eye institute which have an amazing therapy for specialist glasses for stroke survivors who suffer with vision problems. God speed keep getting better 💗
I'm so proud of her being so honest and happy. Weed unfortunately can cause Schizophrenia if you have a family predisposition, and she mentioned her dad had Schizophrenia. So I'm glad her treatment team is aware of what she's doing and they know her history so she can stay safe ❤️
That's not quite correct. Weed has not been shown to cause schizophrenia at higher rates than those that do not smoke weed. A strong cannabis trip however could be a stressor just like losing a parent or a bad breakup which also causes schizophrenia. To be clear they sure aren't 100% sure but the rate at which it occurs is nearly identical between pot smokers and non-pot smokers and the idea is that a stressor precipitates the schizophrenia and that it would have to be there already and we can be that stressor. So to reiterate as of now the research shows you can only get schizophrenia from Cannabis if you were going to get it anyway. That being said schizophrenia usually happens in the early twenties whether induced by cannabis or by natural stressors and I would definitely caution people from doing it too young. I first started when I was 12 but only tried it and started using more regularly around 17 and have major depressive disorder, generalized anxiety disorder social phobia, OCD and unexplained disabling stomach pain. I've obviously had other issues in my life but I think a lot of the mood ones have to do with early cannabis and alcohol use.

Congratulations on your 4 years! As someone in recovery I completely agree with what you’ve said.

Do you think her " California sober" is a good idea?
I’ll speak for myself. California sober would not work for me. I have 7 years clean and sober. If I smoked it would be a matter of time before I just went and got my drug of choice. Many people go on the marijuana maintenance program. Some do it till they are ready to put everything down and some don’t. Personally I take no chances I like how my life is now.
Congrats on four years! My sobriety birthday is today coincidentally, and I completely agree. The last two years of being sober would have been impossible if I hadn't abstained completely and worked a program. But more power to her.

Half the population is affected negatively by smokers, and the other half is actively ruining themselves. i love their banter!!! they seem super comfy together!
Take care.
@@marcomelbourne I would, and I still use cannabis. Just not the same anymore, not as much.

Like Elton John said in her Doc, there can't be a middle ground when you're trying to get clean. It's either all or nothing.
But I know many former addicts who do not adhere to the AA/NA idea of recovery and do live their life without waking up every day reminding themselves that they are an addict. I also know many former addicts who adhere to the AA/NA abstinence and that is what works best for them. Like I said, recovery is different for everyone. It's not a linnear process
I understand what she is saying and I’ve seen many people in Recovery who use something. For me, I will never trust my self to drink again. I hope the very best for her!

But didn’t you have people that worked with you and guided you through recovery?

Demi has the most infectious laugh ever.
ive dealt with an opiate addiction for over a decade now, starting in my mid teens. my first few periods of sobriety (a couple years of time in total) were spent in 12 step programs.
I'm 5 years sober . Best thing in my life to move away from NYC and stop drinking. No other stuff for me 100% sober.

It's just vernacular. When libs say that and they aren't being aggressive, it just means "my understanding is X"
We don't know very many things 100%.
@Benghali In Platforms No, actually.
She's saying "even when I say what I believe to be true, I have to be careful because I'm a celebrity and I only work if my reputation is intact."
I think like with Marxism you're conflating all uses of the term with the most aggressive use of the term.

If you have an addictive personality, you can be addicted to anything.
If drugs are a coping mechanism for you and not something you did exclusively for fun, you might not actually have addiction running in your genes, which is essentially what you mean by an addictive personality.
There is no such thing as addictive personality.
The addictions gene is not a considered-able factor because we know that environments predict gene expressions.
