Great insights. Funny for me as a Dutch person is that we do have institutions where you can go anonymously to test your drugs. For example if a Dutch person would want to test what chems are in his/her xtc, he can just go to a special institute and test one of the pills. He/she can get the results and just check if it's save. The funny part is that possession of drugs is illegal, taking it isn't.

He is correct. This drug is like alcohol in a lot of ways. There are folks that should not do alcohol and there are folks that should not do cocaine. I have done cocaine off and on for 44 years with not major consequences. The last time I used it was 11 months ago. It is not something i wish to do everyday or a few times a week like alcohol. I do it when it is convenient and when it is available in high quality. I'm sure there are many folks like me, but due to the stigma, we don't shout about it. The Dr is correct.

When Joe said the paranoia scared him I feel that. Reason I stopped smoking. Heart beating fast, anxiety, feeling like a pos, having a sense of doom. But maybe that’s the key. Maybe if I slowly adjust the things I feel are broken and use it to help, it is almost a look from the outside in
Yeah everyone has a different reaction to weed. Me personally I get extremely paranoid and I don’t like the feeling and it actually triggers my asthma.
I spoke to a goat farmer in Turkey and had a smoke with him while I was explaining to him about my paranoia he said to me that cannabis was judge and jury and shows you the way to become a more compassionate person who thinks about their actions before doing them.
Cociane is should be legalized; it doesn't harm you anymore then smoking or drinking. Also helps with focusing, awareness, feeling good, opens mind to good conversations, calms you eta.
Growing up in the 00's. For us it was: "drugs are very bad"; cut to: showing a picture of a crooked crack-head without teeth and underwear; cut to: their age and rapsheet. Job done. We tried cannabis five years later either ways, which a lot of teens do. We didn't love it. And now, if we use it, we use it in moderation. Still have all our teeth and underwear on.
Don't do drugs if you can't afford to use drugs often.. good rule of thumb.. poor drug users destroyed the drug trade for everyone.. but they already have tiny drones that deliver drugs to usa.. and there is no way that can change.. a bug net to Mars won't stop the new technology to get away with selling drugs..

It's noteworthy to point out he's totally wrong about Coca-Cola ever having Cocaine HCl in it so his entire premise is flawed and makes him seem like any other dummy that can't or won't do research as it might not fit their narrative but go off ! We need more academics that can't do a wiki search and mislead people with their bullshit.
It’s true what he says. Most people that do drugs still function just fine. When you lose your grip on life for a moment the drugs can create a cushioned warm place to fall into. It’s not easy getting back up and struggle to hold on again when you could just rest in this warm embrace. That’s when you atrophy. You get so used to to not having to hold on anymore and the strength you developed slips away. Now you can’t hold on and you’re dependent on what’s holding you up to survive. The drugs.
The best career advice that I learned is don’t ever attach your-self to a PERSON, a place, a company, an organization or a project. Only Attach your-self to your mission in life and your PURPOSE. That’s how you keep your power and keep your peace!

“Why would you arrest people for putting something in their body?” Well, as long as you make producing and selling it illegal it automatically leads to criminal organizations taking up that role. And these can be brutal. So now you also have a moral responsibility: this guy when talking about going to the source in Colombia and getting a quality product is not telling you about the millions of people in that country that live with horrific cartels because of the vast market demand for this product
I've gotten super high with Dr. Hart a while back when I was working as musician/ session player in NYC. I was a full fledged heroin addict. He's a phenomenally intelligent super human. Deserving of sainthood.
That becomes a problem because these substances can literally change neural pathways in the brain. Where you once had discipline... you now can't tell yourself "No". This is how powerful addiction is. It completely takes over. The "choice" of whether to participate or not is virtually removed. Imagine this... what level of discipline would you need to tell yourself to stop breathing? Its possible in principle but impossible in practice. You'd always gasp for air at the last second... This is what real addiction is like for a lot of people. For a lot of people... drugs are their air.
I 100% agree especially stimulates people who don’t have self control stay up for days and induces them into pychosis shit reeks havoc on your body when abused for a long time but in moderation you’ll be fine

As Dr Gabor Mate, an addiction and trauma specialist says, it's not the drug in itself that's addictive, it's the trauma inside, the emotions you are trying to bury. Anything can be addictive. Exercise, food, working too much, collecting things, spending money. Anything to put you outside yourself and bury emotions. Many people eat everyday and don't get addicted. Many people exercise and don't get addicted to it, just like many people smoke cannabis and do not get addicted, etc

Being a recovering addict of 12 years myself i can tell you that there are many people who lose control as soon as this drug inters there system, this is why NA programs and many doctors call addiction a disease. I do agree that we should be able to put anything we want in our bodies and better support systems instead of locking them up.
Drug addiction being a "disease" as in something you have no control over is nonsense propaganda made up by AA and NA to make people religious. I'm an ex-addict and i was shocked by the garbage they spout in NA and AA, basically telling people they're weak and powerless victims of an uncontrollable disease that is out to get them at any moment and that the only way they can recover is to accept a "higher power". It was incredibly sad seeing people who had been sober for decades and they still went to NA every single day, probably because they've been convinced that they're weak and they're going to immediately fail and relapse if they stop going. And i'm not surprised if they really feel like hopeless addicts if they spend every day talking about how hopelessly addicted they are and how every day is a struggle, even after being sober for years. They're never going to recover and get over it if they wallow in it every single day instead of finding something else to think about. Many addicts have experienced so much shit and struggle that they're probably stronger people mentally than the average person, so they should be taught that they're not powerless, and that they are in control and they're the only ones who can change their lives for the better, not some mystical higher power or some borderline cult organization like NA.
Your anecdote means nothing. This man is a neuropharmacologist who administers the purest form of this drug to thousands of people and studies the results under controlled circumstances.

@ProfX the point I’m making is that the Carl Hart is a doctor who administers drugs under controlled settings and understands the effects that it has on the brain. Under controlled settings you are able to control the variables. The person who wrote the comment isn’t qualified to speak on it. He’s merely giving an anecdote. What he was taking was not under controlled settings, he has no idea what adulterants where in his supply and he has no idea what the variables were which led to his 12 year addiction. That’s the main difference.
NA is a fuckin joke. With their goddamn woo woo religious bullshit, tryna convince you that you’re to weak to overcome this “disease” it’s sickening. Not even to mention.. This is an important message. You can take anything to obscurity: sugar, fats, nicotine, adrenaline, alcohol. My experience, in the vicinity of my own friends, is that alcohol makes people act a lot more devious than say cannabis or cocaine - yet alcohol is legal and cannabis and cocaine is not (in most contries). We need to break away from letting the state tell us what, when and how to put things in our bodies. If people can handle it, without getting into trouble, or putting others in danger, let people decide for themselves and have some fun. We are here for a good time, not a long time. People of older generations, such as my mother, father and parents of friends, have no idea what cocaine and cannabis actually does to you. They're completely oblivious to it. They've grown up without understanding it because it was harder to come by than it is now and had a lot more stigma in their social circles. I had a conversation with my own parents about this, for the first time, not too long ago. And they were so ignorant as to what it actually does with you. After I explained it in an open-minded way, they had smiles on their faces when I told them it's not that bad at all. If you use moderation and try to be a little responsible about it, it is no more weird than drinking alcohol. Just like when you're opening a bottle of wine or having a couple of beers - be responsible about it and use common sense. If you commit crimes while drinking a beer - you should be held responsible. Just like if you commit crimes after smoking weed - you should be held responsible for that crime. Not for smoking weed but for commiting an actual crime. It's logic in it's purest form, applicable on any substance intake. Use your intelligence and everything will be fine. Legalize usage of substances people actually use - and less people will die from overdoses and commit a lot less crimes while under the influence. A lot less.
The problem is it's hard to explain it to people that are narrow minded and will interrupt the moment you say it plus the stigma in their social circle at their time

This Dr. Is whack AF. Any cocaine, even the purest shit is cut with other adulterants and besides that, if you have any experience with it, leads to nothing but misery.
I think its beyond stupid to think otherwise. We know that most people who use drugs are responsible members of society, and 80-90% of people who used drugs are not addicted. My friends and I all used drugs in the past and 99% of us were never addicted and we are all functional members of society. Even addicted people can be fully functional if we give them legal product and dont criminally charge them and stigmatize them. The reason drugs make people fked up is mostly bcs of stupid laws and criminal cycle people get themself into after being criminally persecuted.
@James Prime yeah, i mean, the only reason why it might seem that you can not do drugs and be responsible member of society, is bcs of drug criminalization and social pressure drug users experience... So if you are heroin or cocaine user, or heroin, cocaine addict, of course you will have hard time functioning in society where people and law put pressure onto you and criminalize and stigmatize you. Especially in america... In Switzarland heroin addicts are functional, have jobs and good connections to families, and are responsible... Why? Bcs society accepts them, and do not discard them for their drug use. In america, heroin users are rejected by society, left alone, criminalized... So of course they have hard time functioning, and they need to do bad stuff to support their drug habbit.... So drug war and social unacceptence enhances addiction, and gets people sucked into never ending miserable cycle..
I gotta say...I'm a single mom and my daughter has a lifelong disability. Keeps me from becoming a drunk mess...I don't do it anymore because I don't want to accidentally take fenny but shit...a little good quality upper really went a long way to make me more productive and overall happier and more capable 🤷 oh well
All's it takes is one speedbump in your life, like a family tragedy, work issues etc to make someone go from a recreational user to achieve a high to someone who uses to achieve a state of normality... As human beings, we don't like feeling down, we like a state of balance... The drug itself isn't the addictive thing, it's merely the vessel that helps people achieve escape from reality... In a society that is perpetuated by negatives by overwhelming media influences and mental adversities... I don't believe that narcotics or drugs of any kind are beneficial on an ongoing basis... Each to their own, but I can definitely say that I believe the majority of people who try drugs are not in a place in life where they can enjoy them without being exposed to or mitigating their detriments...
So I just watched the whole podcast on Spotify, I agree with many of this guys ideas including legalisation, testing, harm reduction but he just doesn’t want to go there when it comes to drugs causing addiction or damage, his side step regarding what Jordan Peterson went through says it all, in response to the question what do you think about the horrible experience Peterson had coming off benzos his reply was “ why did he stop” erm cause he fucking wanted to dude!!! He never once mentioned the neurological aspect to cocaine or heroin addiction and just blamed it all on people’s stuff, I’ve tried both and the first thing that goes through your mind is “more” your brain wants more and yeah if you have shit going on then you probably are more likely to do more but some of these drugs are physically addictive and it seems he has a real blind spot there
My thoughts exactly, he’s either never felt withdrawal like most people have, or he’s just for some reason able to tolerate it or is just super disciplined and always does the right thing and keeps it in moderation. Very fascinating podcast I loved it.

My experience doing cocaine, has been that I am far more interested in talking with people, getting to know them better, and enjoying myself. Alcohol, I can tend to go towards being more angry, resentful, and violent. Cocaine the complete opposite.
This guy seems to really focus a lot on the good, and none of the bad. It's one thing to understand the biochemistry, neuoropsychology and so forth in terms of why drugs make people feel good temporarily when people are using. The problem is the long term effects on the users body (cardiac, liver, dental, nerve damage, etc.) which are extremely costly and time consuming to manage and they will never be "normal" again. There is also the mental and social destruction to not only the user, but those around them. You're essentially releasing "fake" happiness into you body, at completely unrealistic levels ("high"). You think you're having the time of your life, even if you're doing nothing satisfactory or useful (other than the drug itself), while your family sits at home wondering where you are. When the high goes away, you're left feeling empty- you're body is depleted and resistant to the neurotransmitters that made you feel this way (all ARTIFICIALLY released by the drug- it's fake). Regular things that would make you happy no longer do. You're left chasing that high- and overtime you'll even become resistant to the drug itself. After this goes on for a period of time, you get to go back to an empty home or a family that no longer wants you around because you've left them twisting in the wind. You're no longer trustworthy- you've told endless lies by now. You are unable to feel happiness like you did before. You don't even know who you are anymore. Many of your "old" friends don't even know who you are anymore. You have plenty of "new" friends- all fighting the same battle you know find yourself in. Everyday one of them has a major crisis on their hands (perceived or real)- and their crisis are the "glue" that seems to hold you all together, the feeling of companionship and understanding through the chaos that surrounds you all. You're lucky to still have a career- if you even have that anymore or ever did to begin with. You've made a lot of bad decisions while riding the high that has left you with physical or emotional damage (relationships, injuries, health concerns, etc.) You are probably in financial ruin as well, unless you are extremely wealthy. It's not all unicorns and rainbows. This doesn't happen to every user, but enough of them that it's at least worth mentioning. If I told you there was a 10% chance you'd end up like this, would you think twice about taking the drugs to begin with? This guy seems to be oblivious to that.
there's not a lot of bad for most hard drugs. I know many high functioning rich meth addicts on wall street and silicon valley. Even a dentist with the most perfect teeth I've seen

I agree. Coke or MDMA are great in moderation.. nothing like having a great night planned with some mates and ripping into a bag. But you've got to have your head scewed on about it, can be a real slippery slope.
This is very *close* to being correct. It was Angelo Mariani who fortified wine with coca EXTRACT, which means all the vitamins and other positive nutrients the plant has to offer were still in the drink - a HUGE distinction from cocaine-hydrochloride which is merely the active molecule! The same can be said for Coca-Cola which was never "spiked" with cocaine. Yes, we are never exposed or told about the positive side of the drug which was used for countless centuries by the people of South America to prevent altitude sickness and work for days or even weeks without other sustenance! The problem(s) began when our government banned the drug in "any and all forms," because then it was only available in the molecular form which is highly concentrated for the purpose of smuggling. An inconvenient truth for U.S. policy is that coca, in its natural state, is no more harmful than coffee or tea! Caffeine and cocaine are both stimulants for the central nervous system, but one is administered through the stomach, the other through the mucus membrane, or inhalation when smoked. If caffeine were made illegal, and it nearly was, it too would also be a highly addictive 'street drug' which causes psychoses for the users. Another consideration - the U.S. "war on drugs" policy has utterly destroyed South American culture to the point where people are fleeing their home-lands for the n (perceived) relative safety of the U.S. I believe that if coca had never been outlawed, we wouldn't have the problems with boarder policies we face today because people would be content in the relative safety of the lands they were born in. (BTW, coca was also being successfully used as a means to quit using nicotine and/or alcohol, which then becomes market protection for those drugs which also have ZERO medicinal value, but people are 'free' to consume at-will without fear of imprisonment!)
The worst thing is when someone finds something that makes them feel better then anything else in the world and there life revolves around it. I think the point that this guy is wanting to get across is that when this does happen to people we need to be able to give them something that isn’t killing them and the drugs itself is not what kills.
Take him some where out of town set up a padded cell get your family involved and have a toilet water source and a space in the door for food etc he will go through total hell on earth but he will NOT die after a few days it will get way better I did that with my sister here in Australia they will plead beg promise and say anything to get out and get the drug but as hard as it is pay no attention to it.

Drug War should end, legallize everything, tax it, enforce safety and property laws ......
there needs to be an overhaul on drug laws. All the ones in the books are made by people who have no experience with it outside of the negative. The drug war raging shows an obvious demand for products that have been labeled illegal. If this problem is just empowering cartels, then regulation should be the goal, not imprisonment and demonization of all mind altering substances. Look at alcohol and prohibition to see how this sort of thing always goes.
2.8 million people die from health problems related to obesity every year and about 0.5 million died from drug overdose so are you going to boycott fast food restaurants? I think not. People are going to eat fast food regardless the same way people are going to use drugs regardless buts it’s best if people do both as safely as possible and are educated to the max about what they are putting into their body.

I agree with u

When joe talks about going thru rough trips, but coming out better on the end is literally my life story. I love this video from the core of my being
When Joe said the paranoia scared him I feel that. Reason I stopped smoking. I truly believe it helps a lot of folks but for me it all of the sudden turned into a 2nd voice in my head ( no not literally ) but my own self showing me a list of things I’ve done wrong. Heart beating fast, anxiety, feeling like a pos, having a sense of doom. But maybe that’s the key. Maybe if I slowly adjust the things I feel are broken and use it to help, it is almost a look from the outside in

This is very different from the "don't do drugs" lectures I grew up with 🤔
For me it was "say no to drugs"
Growing up in the 00's. For us it was: "drugs are very bad"; cut to: showing a picture of a crooked crack-head without teeth and underwear; cut to: their age and rapsheet. Job done. We tried cannabis five years later either ways, which a lot of teens do. We didn't love it. And now, if we use it, we use it in moderation. Still have all our teeth and underwear on.
Buddy don’t listen to rumours, go experience it and decide yourself
Don't do drugs if you can't afford to use drugs often.. good rule of thumb.. poor drug users destroyed the drug trade for everyone.. but they already have tiny drones that deliver drugs to usa.. and there is no way that can change.. a bug net to Mars won't stop the new technology to get away with selling drugs..

The drugs.

I think the problem with substances of any type is people's lack of self control.
@@daddymcawesome363 Go do a moderate amount of cocaine or heroin everyday for 6 months then tell me if you still think its a discipline or self control problem....

@@paleemperor5379 wow, that hit close to home, i was never addicted but i used, but i can relate to the idea that people that have been through a lot are actually stronger than people that never had to test their will power, some losses teach you more than always winning ever could, i made changes to my life and now i am healthier than before i dabbled in drugs and alcohol
Very small percentage of people who actually do drugs end up a statistic.. so many people you would never imagine be OTS all day every day. Some people are motivated and respectable others are POS.. with or without drugs

A lot less.
Bro wrote a whole novel in the comments section 😴

Saying that most people who use these drugs are responsible people, is beyond the pale. Some people sure, but the majority, not even close.
Most people don’t become addicted and most addicts quit in 4 years.
@@nonyobussiness3440 Oh, just a measly 4 years lost to something only retards would advocate for being "safe."
You’d be surprised at how many regular ppl that do coke.
I work my butt off and work relentlessly to provide everything I possibly can for her including therapies and classes to help her overcome her disability...a little coke goes a long way to keep my extremely depleted body and mind going. Keeps me from becoming a drunk mess...I don't do it anymore because I don't want to accidentally take fenny but shit...a little good quality upper really went a long way to make me more productive and overall happier and more capable 🤷 oh well
Also, when I stopped getting it, it was cold turkey. I slept for like a whole day but otherwise no withdrawals

"Go straight to the source" someone give this guy a crash course on the working conditions of a regular cartel outfit.
No netflix show needed to imagine the horrific conditions the workers of these cocaine farms go through.
It's almost as if this doctor is okay with slave labor as long as he gets his pure coke.

This guy seems to be oblivious to that.
you are 100% correct
there's not a lot of bad for most hard drugs. I know many high functioning rich meth addicts on wall street and silicon valley. Even a dentist with the most perfect teeth I've seen
@@ah2522 you sound exactly like one of my good friends did about a year ago. Unfortunately he committed suicide last May. I also had the joy of growing up in a poor neighborhood and around family members, loaded with drugs as well as all kinds of social and economic issues (usually exacerbated by the addiction). Most of the people I knew from back then are also dead. The ones that are alive and partook in the drug scene are in terrible health. So sure, maybe you know some rich people that have managed to keep themselves alive and in somewhat decent health (but the truth is, you're not their physician, and you can only tell so much by looking at them). But for those of us that aren't heirs to millions (which is 99% of the population), drug addiction is not pretty. But think of it how you like. That's your choice.

Can't really get into a habit of using Spotify, still haven't listened to a single full episode since they switched.
It definitely helped cure my addiction to JRE that I had for 8 years lol, I don't know if that's a good thing though I do miss it, but oh well.
Go back and rewatch this video but replace every word "cocaine" with "Spotify".

I agree. Coke or MDMA are great in moderation.. nothing like having a great night planned with some mates and ripping into a bag. But you've got to have your head scewed on about it, can be a real slippery slope.

@@Tomas1999Benfica Yep thats the punishment for taking it.. For me coke not too bad but mdma is horrible the next day.
This dude looks like the uncle at family reunions that "knows a guy" who can get anything you want.
I’ve got a nephew hooked on heroin ,.. I cry my eyes out al least a couple times a week
😢 Prayers/hopes for your nephew to beat his addiction. This interview is wild and it’s not the good kinda wild.
The worst thing is when someone finds something that makes them feel better then anything else in the world and there life revolves around it. I think the point that this guy is wanting to get across is that when this does happen to people we need to be able to give them something that isn’t killing them and the drugs itself is not what kills.
I have uncle hooked on alcohol 🍸....any difference??? One the govt tells u is ok - ones not !!! Its bs

Gotta say the biggest point i got out of this is "humans dont completely lose their proclivity for reason and responsibility through substances, most people just avoid blame and place it on their chosen substances"
The test dr.hart was referring to where addicts can test a small amount, they have that at the opioid centers here in British Columbia.

there needs to be an overhaul on drug laws.
