SO well said! I agree with you 100% about Nikon (and other camera makers) forcing people to buy expensive mirrorless cameras that are new and have more megapixels, but sometimes come with lower capabilities than the "old" DSLRs like the D500. I had though that there was no better choice that to buy a still-expensive Z6ii which has poor autofocus, but now I am encouraged to look more at the D500 - used and old, but not necessarily worse.

They've done a great disservice to students and others who just want to explore some basic photography by discontinuing entry-level DSLR cameras.
I know many people who have put away their photography endeavours because cameras cost too much.

I was planning to go for D500. My only concern was it has only 20.9 MP. After seeing this video and listening to your words I will definitely buy D500. I always love your videos. It will have in depth info. Even a beginner can become pro photographer. Thanks a lot for this video!!!😍

Thanks for watching my video and leaving a comment, I appreciate it 😊 20.9 MP is pretty good. More is always better though, as long as it doesn't slow down the number of RAW frames that you can click per second. More megapixels means larger file sizes, which will result in the need for more storage media, and faster computers to process the files.

I have a D500. It’s still an amazing camera. I use it to shoot everything from Landscape and Auroras, to birds & moose, to sports & portraits. I recommend it highly.

Great video and impressive work that went into it. Month ago I bought a D500 and just plain love the camera. Tried it with many lenses including 70-210 f4-5.6 as well as 70-300 VR. Impressive pictures with all of them and very usable even at high ISO settings. Ken Wheeler was very complimentary about this model and I can see why. The focusing performance in dark conditions is similar to D7100 which I also own. Both cameras will cease focusing at a same certain low light level. The D500 has greater ISO range so if it can focus it will deliver better pictures. As far as fast focusing this camera is a joy to use, it is like an extension of your eye.

Yes, spot on, the autofocusing speed and accuracy of the the D500 is better than any entry-level and intermediate Nikon mirrorless camera - and those don't come cheap! That's why this camera is still relevant, it's a shame that they have discontinued this, and I feel sorry for all those who invest in those below-par mirrorless cameras only to find out that they're not good enough for wildlife photography.

Yes you are absolutely correct but if budget is not a constraint one should go for Sony A9iiii. In my opinion this one is the best for wildlife photography. It shots 120 times a second.

The camera is so good that I purchased a brand new one as a backup. The best autofocus system ever built by Nikon. BIF? there's nothing better out there. I do have the Z9 and the Z800 PF. The D500 locks into autofocus in a snap of a second and does not let go for the rest of the tracking, even when you have a busy background behind the BIF. The Z9 is not as good and still lacks behind the D500 on that matter. I wish Nikon launches the D7 with autofocus sensors spread all over the viewfinder. theMulti-CAM 20K 153-point AF system fits the width of the D500 frame. That is the difference to the D5 (has the same autofocus module in it) which I purchased brand new and sent back. You have to put your BIF on the center all the time and when you try to recompose like I do on the D500 the D5 loses focus. There's not enough sensors spread to do that. I have heard that the Multi-CAM 37K autofocus system on the D6 it's even better. However, Nikon insists on having the sensors in the center of the frame. No, it did not spread 1.6X to the side like they say. Tell me about "funny" marketing from Nikon... Remember when they have made a big splash about the Z6 and the Z7. LOL what a failure at the time! The sensor distribution on the D6 has the same "scale" compared to the D5. It's not enough. Had they spread more sensors into the frame like the D500. I would've moved to the D6 in a heartbeat. Hopefully they will realize that the Multi-CAM autofocus system is superior to reading pixels on a mirrorless sensor and will not kill the DSLR pro line. They have registered the "Names" D7, D8 and D9 when they launched the D6. Let's see what happens. Meanwhile, let's have fun!

Correct. But Nikon and others don't want to pursue their line of DSLR cameras, which is a shame, especially since mirrorless cameras aren't worth the money.

I've been shooting the D500 since it came out and would like to HIGHLY recommend an overlooked lens. The Nikkor 28-300mm f5.6 focuses to 1.5 feet. On a D500 that's 450mm at a foot and a half ! The lens is tack sharp - bees, butterflies, and flowers take on more importance with it. Toss the big Nikon lens hood and get a smaller screw in hood and you never have to remove it, which really improves the ease of handling (the dx format doesn't use the full lens diameter so vignetting doesn't happen).
Love love love this lens !
Btw, I just purchased the 500mm PF for my D500 and they fell in love. Another terrific hand holdable lens from Nikon. I bought it for raptors, but it also produces stunning close ups (with some cropping). It's kinda replacing the 200-500 for me, a great lens, but long and heavy. The 500 PF is small enough to hand hold with the 1.4 TC, but good luck trying to stay on your subject at 1050mm . . .

  • @forsterstewartphotography2950

With film as your capture medium.
The lens you choose is the single most important tools a photographer uses. They form the images and the camera merely is a box to capture that image.
But today with digital sensors improving on a quarterly basis if you're starting out fresh, buy the best current body from your preferred manufacturer you can afford. But realize the lens you choose should still be your number one concern.

Матрица в D7500 аналогична D500. Но система фокусировки аналогична D7200. Если не покупать D500, то лучше купить D7200 - у него лучшая по динамическому диапазону и 24Мр матрица, чем даже у D500 и без АА фильтра.

Refreshing to see someone review the gear in the real world, not based off a spec sheet. A lot has been said about this camera, actually overhyping it. I'm not saying it's not good. I'm just saying it's overhyped.

Force feeding us Mirrorless cameras? No one is forced to buy anything they don't want to so unsure how Nikon can be blamed for following the market and producing what people want to buy. Just for the record a good DSLR will still take good pictures today, the same as it did yesterday and will be able to do tomorrow, cameras and lenses don't become obsolete just because something new arrives in the shops.

    • @TheOpenImage
      @TheOpenImage  Před rokem +2

Hey Martin, thanks for your comment. Yes, it's the same across brands. The problem is that they are discontinuing their entire range of affordable cameras. So if a beginner wants to learn photography, they're left with no affordable options. Had they kept their line of DSLR cameras going, there wouldn't have been a problem.

@@TheOpenImage Ever heard of second hand? There are fantastic bargains to be had in the s/h market, no one who wants to get into photography needs to spend a fortune to buy a DSLR camera or lens. In fact early Mirrorless kit is a very cost effective way into photography. You just need to open your eyes and look around and see what is available, cameras from yesterday still take great pictures today and will continue to do so tomorrow.

Yes, force feeding. If you can't get a brand new lens for your DSLR, you're forced. If you can't get a new DSLR, you're forced. If you can't get your DSLR gear fixed when it breaks, then yes, forced. Forced by an industry that has chosen to change to fill pockets, because they know you're going to have to go mirrorless when they stop support for DSLR gear.
