To me Katatonia has always been about the emotional resonance. I can't really take most of the whiny depressed emo/post/alt type bands seriously, to the point where I found songs to be ruined by lyrics alone, even when I tried to ignore them. So when I happened upon Katatonia it was quite something because they somehow just pulled it off and it really worked for me, not exactly sure why.
Perhaps it's the focus on atmosphere, the restraint and willingness to really let you stew in the feelings of dissatisfaction? Idk.
They way they pad out this kind of basic song really conveys the theme of lacking purpose and meaning.
I think there is a lot of music that depends on specific emotional resonance to be enjoyable, and what makes it good is when they're able to put you in that required mood in the first place. One of the most basic and effective methods is to simply take more time and cover more distance between wherever you were right before you started listening and where it's trying to take you emotionally.
Long, extended moments, just vast temporal space in general or musical patterns that seem to go on and on and on are going to be kind of a theme for doom week, I think ^^

The surprised double take on your face when the band kicked in at the beginning was priceless. XD
I really like the texture the background violin added: the surface of it was sadness, but underneath that there was an uncannily eerie quality to it. I agree with you that the track doesn’t stand out as a masterpiece, but I think Katatonia as a whole captures depressing atmosphere really well.

This is one of my favorite Katatonia songs! But not very fitting for doom week as others have said. Haha
Their first couple of albums were very heavily influenced by Paradise Lost, a gothic/death-doom band from England. If you want, you could check out "Your Hand In Mine" from their 1992 album Shades of God or the title track from 1991's Gothic. Much doomier!

  • @jonathanhenderson9422
    @jonathanhenderson9422 Před 3 lety +4

For some background/context, Katatonia were only ever really doom on their first two albums, and some would argue their second album was far more melodeath than doom. By their third album (Discouraged Ones) they'd mostly ditched doom for alternative rock, which is why you're hearing "radio rock." This was from their fourth album, Last Fair Deal Gone Down, where they first started combining that dark alternative rock sound with a more layered, atmospheric approach. As they continued to evolve they got even more into layering/atmosphere/tone and dialing back the straight-forward alternative rock style. My personal favorites from them are this album and their next, Viva Emptiness, but many people prefer their later stuff, which I actually love as well and is probably more complex and better for close analysis. I also think this was a strange pick, even from this album--I basically consider it filler. From this album I would've gone with Dispossession, Chrome, or Teargas. I Transpire is probably as close as that album comes to doom. They're not necessarily more complex, but all are more memorable.
What Cyberdrace says about Katatonia being an emotional thing is very true. They're one of those bands I love almost solely for the atmosphere/tone they create. They're not a band I'd reach for if I just wanted to hear a song, but if I want to wrap up in a dark, moody, depressed tone they're nearly unequaled in the last ~25 years of rock/metal.

The cult masters of doom metal or stoner doom metal (I guess it's still under doom metal label) - Electric Wizard. You won't get doomier band then these mofos, maybe except for Black Sabbath. Return Trip or Dopethrone I would go for. Return Trip being one of the heaviest song ever produced on the planet, while Dopethrone is the biggest stoner doom anthem out there.
Another band, quite contemporary but still veeery trad doom is gonna be Pallbearer. Their debut is brilliant and I'd suggest Devoid of Redemption as one of my favourite tracks ever! Just pay attention to lyrics and corresponding change in instrumentals = brilliance! On their Heartless record they go more prog rock, keeping their doom back bone, great compositions out there.
    other picks being:
Pentagram - Sign of the Wolf
    St. Vitus - Patra
    Sleep - Dragonaut
    ^for more classic picks
    Warning - Bridges
    Ufomammut - Stigma
    Monolord - Empress Rising
Thou - At the Foot of Mt. Diskrill
    Hooded Menace - Crumbling Insanity
Yob - Beauty in Falling Leaves
^for really good doom representatives sometimes mixed with other influences/genere
    BONUS TRACK:
Emma Ruth Rundle & Thou - The Valley
as it's my favourite in the genere for 2020
hmu if you'd want to know more about genere, I think I could guide you well

Being my first time with Katatonia, this song sounded a lot like a Gothic-tingled take into the Post-Metalish side of Deftones. So yeah, I get the early 2000 vibes, even if not so much Grunge. I liked it, but will have to listen more definitely. I get a slight Doom influence on the softer sections, especially on the psychedelic end of Doom (early Black Sabbath or some of the more jammy stoner/sludge doom-influenced bands) but it is very little for me. Great insight as always, Bryan!

From the "not actually doom but close" I would recommend an "experimental doom metal" band called Öxxö Xööx, and I would suggest the song "LMDLM" mostly because I remember this one the best from them. They also have this slow melodic-ish feeling, but the vocal isn't just melancholic, it's shifted even more into despair. You could actually hear their vocalist in some of Igorrr's songs, they often work together. They sing in their own language which works perfectly for creating this exact sense of despair.

Katatonia really was arguably only ever any sort of doom on their first four albums, maybe even only their first two.
I'd say for a death/doom song chose "Brave" from their second album "Brave Murder Day", which I'd prefer
Similarly doomy would be "Without God" from their first album "Dance of December Souls" , I just don't like it that much
For doomier gothrock (or something like that) choose "I Am Nothing" from their fourth album, where I feel you can see the shift to this style already.

I think a lot of the confusion with whether or not Katatonia is doom metal comes from them starting out as a doom band. They evolved their sound over time, became more alt rock and radio friendly (which I actually like about them, they're pros when it comes to pulling off catchy verse/chorus/verse songs) but their first two albums sound completely different from the rest. For some reason music streaming sites still keep them in the doom category and because of that some people will think their newer stuff is what doom sounds like... but the track that you're doing tomorrow is 100% doom. Very traditional, influenced by 70's and 80's doom metal bands but with a modern touch.

Please do a reaction to Can Bardd - Between Hope and Reality. Amazing AMAZING Swiss atmospheric folk/black metal band!
So, I wanted to update my comment because I thought about it and realized that more is deserved than just a "Do this one plis!".
First, I really appreciate the amount of effort you put into not just reacting to the music but giving your critique throughout the song. A lot of the reaction channels
I've come across will simply react to the meaning of the song but not to the actual musical styles/mechanics within and how they relate to the meaning of the song.
This is a breath of fresh air from someone who obviously has listened to and created a susbtantial amount of music in their lifetime. Also, the ability to see someone react
to music that you are passionate about for the first time is such a pleasing experience as, in a way, you are able to relive that moment through them.
Second, the reason for my request. Can Bardd is a band that I have been following for some time based on their debut album, "Nature Stays Silent". Though muddled in production value,
I was instantly impressed by the musicianship displayed by the creator of the band, Malo Civelli, in the composition and lyrical themes within. Their sophomore effort, titled "The Last Rain", completely improves on every aspect displayed in the first album. The production quality is spot-on and the songwriting is masterfully done with very few down moments where you feel like you are just listening to get to the next segment. I find that I can appreciate a bands music more if I can make a more personal connection with its members, which in this instance was accomplished when I came across a drum playthrough of the song by the bands actual drummer. In watching the video (which I will link below), I was able to see just how much emotion and energy had gone into the creation of this music which is especially apparent in the reaction of the drummer to the music at various points of the song. This cemented my deep apprecation of this band and the music they are able to create and I can say that even if you don't do a reaction video for this song, you owe it to yourself (and this goes for anyone else that happens to read this) to give this album a listen. All of the tracks are of the same quality, composition and emotiveness as "Between Hope and Reality". The lyrics are also very well written and should be read while listening to the music to get the full emotional impact of the songs.
Sorry for such a long winded comment and thank you for such great content!

I would LOVE to hear Bryan's criticisms of the guitarist's side-project Diabolical Masquerade. The only problem is that their greatest work, Death's Design, is structured in a such a unique way that only listening to one "movement" wouldn't give you a good impression of what listening to the album is like (It's technically a one song album). That being said, it'd be better than nothing. Here's a playlist of the album broken up into movements, but it's all low-quality audio. The 4th movement (which I linked) is great: czcams.com/video/2q2T2xDWY3k/video.html

Yeah, agreed, not really very doomy. But having followed this band since the early 2000's, it's a bit difficult to hear them for what they are and strip away all the memories I have. First concert with them was like 20 years ago in Stockholm and then I saw them again at House of Blues when I lived in California. And again just a few years ago in Stockholn, and they've developed quite a bit over the years.
Strangely enough, one of their strongest assets have always been the singer, Jonas Renske, but maybe not in this song. I dunno.

Katatatonia has been around for a long time and they have been creating fantastic melodies time and time again, no wonder no two of their followers would agree on 'the' song to go with. These guys have a very different background as well, with harsher vocals and hasher riffs. This shift is by the way not a great surprise for Swedish metal bands. Apart from your expert technical approach, however, and this only an opinion, Katatonia works more as a bleak emotional soundtrack to life, for those whose mind is for better of for worse, wired introvertedly. Be that as it may, they are wonderful artists, evidently seen if one checks their live sessions, easily found here in CZcams.
Having said all this, I'd like to suggest once again to finding time for some Be'Lakor one of these years...

Disappointed in the voters for this one. I'm actually surprised it got so many votes because there were so many comments on the Patreon saying it's not Doom so they weren't going to vote for it, even from the people that love the band. I'm not personally familiar with Doom but I checked out all the songs up for vote and this did not seem to have what I discovered to be that Doom sound that the others had. I'll admit I'm biased as I thought this was like bottom 3 worst songs on the list too (way too plain and boring in my subjective view) but I still think it's not Doom regardless.
