Just installed one on a school buss, man that was a different animal, the school decided to sell it without the old ecm, or the bolts or spacers, or grommets, so pretty much manufacturing all the components to mount it. You have just enough room to get one arm in the compartment underneath the bus. My hats off to the people who work on them.

I purchased a caterpillar 525B that took a lot of damage and is being scrapped. Although it’s a lost cause…Most of the electronics are still intact and undamaged. I have a bit of experience with dealing with ECM‘s, I’ve repaired dozens of car and truck ECM’s at the component level… However I’ve never dealt with anything from an huge industrial motor. I buy and repair pallet loads of industrial equipment… mostly as a hobby and supplemental income. But usually stuff like CNC machines, servo drives, motor controls, stuff like that. Never dealt with these massive engines and all of their electronics goodies.
I have a humble troubleshooting lab, and will check everything to the best of my ability. And then pass it on to someone who needs it. Maybe I’ll be able to trade it for something interesting… Who knows.
The machine I Purchased is going to be scrapped this week or next… it was in like new condition with low hours on it when it took a tumble off of a large embankment and did more damage than it was worth repairing. It belonged to a large construction company and I bought it directly from the owner after his insurance was settled.
all of the electronics and wiring were completely undamaged in the fall. Some of the electronics had been disconnected and a few potential buyers had poked around loosening some connections and possibly removed a few sensors or modules. I’m not sure how much is missing, but the main ECM is still there. So I would assume they would’ve taken that if they were going to take anything.
My ecm isnt on the side of the engine like shown in your video. It’s directly under the driver seat fastened to the bottom of the cab on the outside. I was curious if it’s common for them to have different locations like this? And how the heck to find all of the other hidden electronics, modules, or sensors. I want to remove anything useful or valuable before it is scrapped.
Some of the stuff is really hidden deep and hard to find. I’ll fallow the path of the wires I can see, but I’m worried some have possibly been removed… or I’ll miss some valuable module or parts. Considering a few potential buyers loosened some of the connections and possibly moved or removed things… I just want to make sure I find everything.
I Tried to find a schematic or diagram online showing the location of all the modules and sensors that I’ll be removing but no luck so far. The model number of mine is 172-9389-01

Appreciate your videos. I am a Ex CAT/Cummins mechanic retired from a pete dealer. The strangest ecm failure I encounterd was a 550 Acert in a 379 pete. brand new off the piggy back tk.This engine sounded like it had a High lift gasser cam in it was hilarious belching smoke and loping like mad.. ! .Had et plugged into it and it was throwing every code you could think of from cam/crank timing codes to inj pulse width.basically freaking out.Tapped on the ECM case with a rubber mallet ran perfect.flashed new ecm all is well.Did download on bad one for warranty. Cat called service manager week later.Turned out to be a bad solder joint on the hard board. Was a MXS motor and they had over 50 of them that got out into production giving everyone fits on diagnostic side

I think a mobile service truck is a pretty lucrative way to make money, if you can specialize even better. RVs for instance are always breaking down and word of mouth spreads quickly. Could make some good money doing that.
Also fixing old Mercedes Benz with over 100,000 miles is also a ludicrous way to make money, if you can specialize in low end communities and slums you can make a killing fixing high mileage Benz, Bmw, Cadillac Escalades.

Hey - thanks for all the time you take to posts the videos - they are very helpful. I have a question.... I have a 3126 from a 99 Kenworth that has all 6 injector codes... 1-11, 2-11 etc... It looks like the ECM is bad. My question is - do I need to look for something in the injectors or the injector harness before I plug a new computer into this thing? Like a ground fault to power or something like that? I dont want to smoke a new ECM if I have a harness or injector issue. Do they just fail or is there an underlying cause? Thanks in advance.

Hi Adeot Ape, I'm having some trouble with a C9 generator. It has a number of strange intermittant faults, the first being it wouldn't take full load. I've tried running the cylinder cutout test in ET multiple times (amongst other tests}, it passed once but stops the test consistantly while testing unit #3 (the one time it passed, all injectors were "questionable"). The reason ET gives is "a change in engine load or speed, which is not allowed". This is not actually happening as each time I tested it the generator was not connected to any load whatsoever. The ECM also frequently throws an intermittant "Inlet air heater relay current high" code as well. Have you seen anything like this before, and do you suspect this may be the ECM on its way out? I've also had it lose connection to ET randomly a couple of times, with no bumps or change of any kind to the wiring/adapter leading up to the ECM.
As a side note I disconnected one speed sensor at a time to check them before starting it back up (it ran fine with no difference to the tests), but to my surprise the ECM didn't seem to care at all that it was missing a speed sensor, let alone throw a code or any sort of warning.

love your videos anything i can learn is great, i have a c 12 and its cutting out here and there first on a pull then even at an idle, its like the power cuts to the ecm or something , but the guages dont move and thers never a check engine light, checked all wires and found no bad spots or fub throughs, did find one rub through at the plug going in the the rocker for the injecters , but could"t get it to cut out to se if it was the cure , guess will find out with work monday, iseems to be when engine is over normal op temp

Why don't they have an outer iron plate with a jacket bolted down on top of the ECM? You tube in chilled anti-freeze from the center of the plate into the jacket, and cycle out the heated anti-freeze from the edges. What would be wrong with a mini-radiator system bolted down and around the ECM?

I have a cat 6NZ and recently job I have done was manifold and the guy did a lot of welding trying to pull out broken studs and since that day I have faulty sensors and replaced it but still showing up and truck shut down while driving or idle no matter what circumstance do you think this is a ECM problem? Im facing a big issue of trouble shooting a c32 cat generator.
It is deluting diesel in engine oil. With in 1 to 2hrs while loaded it mix 10 to15 liters of diesel in oil sump. Checked fuel trans pump for leak trace nothing after replacing all injector O-rings but still facing the same issues. Exhaust manifold glowing red in the part of cylinder five and six while at fullload.
Have a 98 GMC topkick 3126.
Runs fine but once it warms up while driving it stahls shutters and shakes has no power can only do 40mph. Or it will just cut off and die out. Its getting plenty of clean fuel. Don't have a scanner, tried that check engine flashing light trick saw from jcook007fix channel. And got 72 , 73, 74,. Could this possibly be the ECM?

greetings from Venezuela, exactly that happens to a 325d excavator, initially it starts at high rpm lasts about a minute on and starts throwing all the injectors as a fault code and does not turn on anymore, the case was that we looked for another ECM and just connected it All the injectors are already out and it does not make the injector recognition sound. My question is, could it be that a used computer also has to be programmed? We don't know what to do anymore.

Having issues with the ECM in a CAT XQ60. Had the generator running, then I shut it down to top off the fuel. When trying to start up again the motor try’s to turn over then it throws a ECM code.
This is one of the worse jobs on ANY vehicle : Troubleshooting ECM, harness and connectors...and most of the times the problems are intermittent and hard to reproduce when u want it to.
I had an ECM die on me once at 140k on a crappy 1996 Eclipse. Darn thing made of kinds of noise and clicking sounds...good thing it did, it just made the whole ordeal a whole lot easier for me. Do HD trucks come with a bunch of body modules(smaller ecm's) like new cars too ? Keep the videos coming...i don't work on HD trucks but i like them a lot. 👍
Forgot to add: Yup, heat KILLS A LOT of electric/electronic. components...the Eclipse ECU gets pretty hot and it gets no air flow(confined to a TIGHT space next to the radiator and getting cozy with the battery, acid bath and fumes, anyone ?lol).
The newer the truck the more modules it has. The engine has one as well as the ABS, sometimes a dash or cab module, body control, and transmission of it has an automatic, are the more common truck ones.

Hello Guy, I have been troubling shooting 3512B cat engine, cylinder 5 and 8 is not firing have even interchanged injector, check valve, pressurized cylinder, I decided to check cylinder input since the ECM communicate with solenoid in pwm , I have on nos 5&8 is... 1.340hz while the least on firing cylinders are 98.5hz and highest is 245.4hz while engine running at 600rpm idle
Josh... I have had you help me before. I have a c7 and it randomly dies. It is in a school bus. I have sent it to Holt cat in Dallas. They couldn't get it to repeat the problem 😑 . I Then decided to drive it around for several hours and nothing happened . Drove it back to the day care. 2 day later it was doing the same thing. Even with the driver in the seat going down the road it would die and she could restart it rolling down the road. Then maybe do it again or maybe not for 3 days. Checked wiring/ battery connections haven't checked ECM or related conditions . The engine is in a Freightliner school bus. Your thoughts ?

Hello! I was wondering if you could help me locate where my VIM is located on a 2001 Freightliner fl70 4door sport chassis. I have been scowering the Internet and called a couple places but no one can seem to tell me where it is and I cannot find anything on it. My Allison switch pad is not lightning up and truck will not start. I've gone through all the normal stuff to check but am being told this VIM has fuses in it that could have went bad but cannot check them if I can't find the box. Hey there, hoping maybe you could help me out. Ive replaced all my injectors with reman units on my nxs acert. Trying to install the trim files, files go in fine but as soon as key is turned off the trim files go back to old files. Have 12v on 70 with key on, and 12 volts constant on 2 other pins (according to diagram). Have you ever heard of this?
+Big Bore Well that is a new one on me. I've seen ECMs lose trim files and, but usually they go to unprogrammed. Do you notice a difference in the engine running with them incorrectly programmed? If not I wouldn't worry about it. I wouldn't think a battery problem would cause it though, as some trucks have battery disconnect switches and that doesn't seem to affect them.
I had some wiring issues due to those zip ties on the ecm connector. Some would be so tight that wires shorted together or the plastic would cut the wires. Ive also replaced several ecms on the c15s. All were the same fault. The sensor wire for the intake actuator sensor (jake brake pressure?) was battery voltage instead of 5v sense. Wiring was fine. Replaced ecms and sensor and were good to go. But had one come back with same fault 3 years later. What gives? Same fault trouble shoot and ecm is outputing battery instead of 5v sense wire.
+Alex Alanis The IVA oil pressure sensor, the one on the valve cover base by the turbo does go out all the time on ACERT engines, but I've never seen it read battery voltage. Sounds like you have some gremlins on that truck.

Question there's any way to reset or erase the old code that it's on the ECM? After putting the ET to trouble shoot the miss according to the mechanic cylinder #3 was bad I replace it my self thanks to one of your video by the way I have a Cat 3126, well 3weeks after its star miss again this time I retrieved the code just like you said on the video with the cruise control and it give me the same code again 73, what should I do now?
Sorry I missed this comment, somehow it didn't get sent to my account for notification. Well if you are having the same code for the same cylinder you most likely have a problem with the wiring or the electrical connector going to the injector itself. I hope you got it fixed by now.

Hey I was wondering how I would be able to run a 2001 cat 3126 on an engine stand.. how would I go about powering up the ecm to get the engine running? I have a 70 pin connector with wires attached but they are all cut since it was pulled out of a truck
+crimson22s You would just need a wiring diagram. Then just run the powers and grounds to the P1 connector. You'll also need to wire in a throttle pedal for rpm control. Should be all you need.
Just got done replacing two ECMs on 2 different trucks both trucks are 2004 KW T800 with C15 acert BXS one truck having 13826 hrs the other truck having 13914 hrs with in 2 weeks. Trucks just 1 S/N apart. Same code all injectors current high plus a couple of AIV. Thought it was strange

Hmmmmm, it's a hard field to start when your older. I'm not super old but if I was changing careers and was middle aged I would probably look into something that would be slightly less physical. What did you do as a GC? I guess it depends on how old you are? I've thought about in another life I might have been in HVAC or maybe Alternative Energy. They seem like interesting subjects to get into, but I'm doing well where I'm at. With your GC background, have you thought about being a handyman working for a property owner or something, my neighbor does that, he is in his 70's and makes good money doing it.
Sir problem starting Caterpillar 320
Hi all. i have a Cat C4.4 Diesel engine on a wood chipper, The unit has an LCD display. It runs ok for about 20 minutes then suddenly the LCD display goes blank and the engine looses power completely, it shakes while powering down. After that i can press reset on the Control panel near the LCD, the LCD comes back on as normal and i can start the engine normally. It does the same thing after approx. 20 minutes. Any suggestions? Possibly ECM heating up? Bad relay? Ive checked all the wiring harnesses. We did have a problem with the Ignition cylinder harness, but that was fixed. Please Help!!!!
Make sure you have decent Earth from block chassis and possibly start back to the battery

No check e. And no certain rpm but mostly from about 5% to 75% throttle. The filters are staying full but it does act like it's getting air but it comes and goes and doesn't die. Psi?

Hi Guy .Ive a 2002 3126 .When my ecm went it acted just like it was a fuel problem for the first day then it began to run rough,then it ran but really really rough.I have 2 of the same year 3126s so i took the other ecm off and put it on and it runs fine.Think i just lucked out.Wonder if other cat motors being same year ect could swap ecm.
A lot of failures is the injector driver fails causing a misfire. Most of which all six can fail and you will have a no start.
A ECM is blank (correct part number required) and first you flash it to the software. Once flashed you can put it in test mode (70 pin ECM's) and for 24 hours the ECM can be changed. After 24 hours of key on time the ECM locks in. Or you can bypass the test mode and program engine serial number directly in. Some engines require injector trim file (ACERT) or four digit code. Your engine may or may not have this. Then you have the FTS/FLS for each engine. That is how much fuel is putting on the piston. So with a used ECM you don't know what HP you have unless you hook up to ET. Then the fuel numbers and the injector codes could be off some. After all of that you have the programming of the truck, PPM for the speedo, any PTO functions if used, automatic or manual trans., engine fan and the list goes on. I always tell people get a jump drive and get a ECM replacement file out of your ECM before it fails and you have a copy of the programming. If you go to Cat they will be charged a used ECM replacement fee from the factory, plus any other labor.
If you do go and have work done on the engine for example and it has the wrong serial number of the engine in it. You could be asking for trouble, as wrong parts could be installed.
Hi, 7 years later .... got a question .. i have a cat 149-6990-10 ecm.. the person gave it to me look at because he wired the main voltage backwards or something like that and fried a Diode in the ecm. However I have no clue what the diode is because its blown... i believe its board number is d4 beside cap c258 on the edge of the right side middle.. I do have a picture. Because i have no clue i replaced it with a t4 diode just to see if the unit would power up.. However I would rather not test out that theory as you might know the diode number.... Well if you see this great if not I get it.. 7 years later...
Suppose in a fleet where the trucks have sequential S/N's and one truck's ECM is possibly bad and no CAT ET in sight - for troubleshooting, it should be OK to remove a known good ECM from one of the properly functioning trucks, install it in place of the bad one, and test - right? Even with different injector trim codes, the truck with the bad ECM would now operate satisfactorily with the known good ECM - right?

I would like to do the cylinders cut to check the injectors... I dont have the check engine light and did the code test with the cruse control method which gave me the 5 5 code.... engine lacks power ...is a 2WS rated at 475 HP... I am subscribed already.. ;)
+HENRY VILLATE Well unfortunately I don't know of a cheap way to do a cylinder cutout test. If you are really dedicated you could make a toggle switch setup running to injector harness and switch them off, but I think it would be cheaper to just have a Dealer do a cutout test for you.
when i pulled the plug at the rocker for the injector harness it had oil in it, i thought this was weird, no leaks the far up the engine, it had oil at the computer side also , but there was a leak causing oil on that side of the engine , at that level, is this a problem, i would think so. any comments would be great.
Oil leaking out the EUI harness is a common problem on Cat engines. Have seen a ECM fail as so much oil was running down harness. What I do and Josh hates this product. On the inside harness you have a section of wires to the connector with no sheathing. I take silicone and cover it up and for force glue between wires right at the connector. I try and block oil from entering around the wires. Let it dry over night. If engine is already assembled you have to get the harness out. So you might as well order a new harness as old one one may break, etc. Or on a new harness you can pull the plug off and try heat shrink. You would need different sizes as the plug end would be large down to the wire size. I never tried this, glue is fast and cheap.
I have a 04 century with a C15 my truck cut off in the middle of the road was working fine then all of the sudden my speedometer, rpm, oil and temp went out the truck was still on for a couple of seconds but with no response. I check the ign fuse it’s good then check pin 70, 53 and 52 they have power with 12volts while the truck if off. Pin 65 and 67 have 5 volts. I have no codes that I can pull off. When I turn the key on the gages kick in but then they die. Then all of the sudden my temp gage come on and it cranks and everything goes back to normal but then I drive 5 miles and it does it all over again. Do you think that’s a sign for a bad ECM.
I would install a bypass of power and grounds to the J1 connector. If problem goes away it's in the truck side. If problem remains, in the Cat side.

Usually it will throw a controller code or whatever for ALL injectors. If its a wiring issue it'll it'll only 2 sets of injector codes. Sometimes it'll be interminet and then eventually all together the driver will go out. VERY common on a rv and buss due to poor air flow management
